Elma Thornton

ALLENDALE — Mrs. Elma F. Thornton died Sunday morning after a brief illness. She was 86.

Mrs. Thornton was born March 17, 1919, the daughter of the late William and Lucille Lancaster. She was a member of the Allendale First Baptist Church and an active member of the community.

Surviving are 2 daughters, Dowlene Cope of Allendale and Sheryll Rogers of Irmo. There are 6 grandchildren: Blan Cope, Rhonda Martin, Patrick Cope, Kim Traywick, Melissa Spitzer and Brian Morris. There are 9 great-grandchildren and 1 nephew: Ricky Lancaster of Barnwell.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the Allendale First Baptist Church with burial following in Bamberg Memory Gardens. Visitation will be held Tuesday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Smith-Rhoden Funeral Home. Smith-Rhoden Funeral Home of Allendale is in charge of arrangements.

Douglas Jefferson Sr.

COLUMBIA — Service for Douglas Edward Jefferson, Sr., 55, will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Cancer Care Fund at Lexington Medical Center, c/o Ellen C. Foundation, 2720 Sunset Blvd., West Columbia, SC 29169. Visitation will be Wednesday 6-9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. Jefferson died Saturday, April 16, 2005. Born in Middleboro, Mass., he was a son of Arleen Corayer Jefferson Greenwood and the late Russell E. Jefferson. He was employed as a security guard.

Surviving are sons, Douglas Jefferson, Jr. of Columbia, Michael Jefferson of West Columbia and John Jefferson of Hopkins; daughter, Angela Ballance of Hopkins; his mother of Allentown, Pa.; sister, Kathy Stacey of Columbia; brother, Dennis Jefferson of Lexington; grandchildren, Devin Jefferson, Shyann Jefferson and Liberty Jefferson and partner, Rose Wise of Pelion.

Rebecca Sims Richardson

COLUMBIA — Services for Mrs. Rebecca Sims Richardson will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday (viewing at 1 p.m.) at St. Mark Baptist Church, Gadsden with burial in the church cemetery. Leevy’s Funeral Home, Taylor Street Chapel, is in charge. Surviving are her nephews, Benjamin (Sylvia) Scott; great-nieces, Lashandrah D. Scott, Trina R. Young, and Franchesta Scott.

Willie Clinton Moore Jr.

COLUMBIA — Services for Mr. Willie Clinton Moore Jr., will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday at Leevy’s Funeral Home, Taylor Street Chapel, with burial in Lincoln Cemetery. Leevy’s Funeral Home, Taylor Street Chapel, is in charge. Surviving are his wife, Eloise Goodwin.

Patricia Kephart

CHAPIN — Memorial service for Patricia Ann Hutto “Patty” Kephart, 56, will be held at a later date. Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel, Irmo, is assisting the family.

Mrs. Kephart died Sunday, April 17, 2005. Born in Columbia, she was a daughter of Frances Derrick Hutto Hammond and the late Maclaren Jewel Hutto. She was a graduate of Dentsville High School and the USC School of Nursing.

Surviving are her husband, Terry Kephart; son and daughter-in-law, Charles Eugene Elias, Jr. and Ann Marie Elias of Holly Hill, Fla.; daughter, Wendy Michelle Elias of Ft. Worth, Tex.; her mother and step-father, Riley G. Hammond of Lexington; sisters, Paula Elliott of Charleston, Pam Sosler of Perry, Ohio and Leisa Flashnick of Columbia; and grandchildren, Autumn Rose Elias and Peren Jade Elias-Lopez.

Margie Patterson

SUMTER — Margie Rice Patterson, 83, wife of 65 years to L. C. “Pat” Patterson, died Sunday, April 17, 2005, at a local nursing center.

Reared in Bennettsville, she was a daughter of the late Daniel Webster Rice and the late Anna Belle Carson Rice.

Mrs. Patterson attended high school in Bennettsville and was a member of Northside Memorial Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband of Sumter; a daughter, Gail P. Hunter and husband Richard of Roswell, Ga.; a son, Douglas Patterson of Sumter; a brother, Douglas Rice of Jefferson, Ga.; 3 grandchildren, Mike Hunter and wife Dawn of Atlanta, Ga., Jon Hunter and wife Nicole of Charlotte, N.C., and Rich Hunter and his fiancee, Lauren Colletti of Houston, Texas ; 3 great-grandchildren, Jack Hunter, Patterson Hunter and Jane Hunter.

Funeral services will be held at 2 P.M. Wednesday at Northside Memorial Baptist Church with Rev. Jimmy Holley officiating.

Burial will be in the Sumter Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 P.M. Tuesday at the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the residence at Morningside of Sumter, 2500 Lin-Do Court.

Memorials may be made to Northside Memorial Baptist Church, 1004 N. Main Street, Sumter, S. C. 29153.

Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory, 221 Broad Street, Sumter, is in charge of the arrangements.

Ann Melnik Bracaglia

COLUMBIA - Memorial services for Ann Melnik Bracaglia, 78, will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 21, 2005, at Our Lady of the Hills Catholic Church.

Mrs. Bracaglia died Sunday, April 17, 2005. She was born in Campbell, Ohio, the daughter of the late Theodore and Lillie Josult Melnik.

Mrs. Bracaglia is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Janice and Larry Guster of Columbia, son, John Bracaglia of Campbell, OH, three grandchildren, Lawrence, Brad and Daniel Guster.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Stanley, Pete and Faye Melnik and sisters, Nellie Melnik, Stephana Polya and Jenny Bozicovic.

Violet Koger

WALTERBORO — Mrs. Violet Lee Smith Koger, 80, of 1326 Sidneys Road, Walterboro, died Sunday evening, April 17, 2005, in Roper Hospital in Charleston.

Funeral services will be held 2 o’clock Wednesday afternoon, April 20, 2005, at The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Home Chapel, Walterboro. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Walterboro.

Mrs. Koger was born September 4, 1924, in Jasper County and was a daughter of the late Nealie and Eva Snipes Smith. She was a member of Bedon Baptist Church, where she was active in the Friendship Sunday School class.

Surviving are her husband of thirty-eight years, Mr. Archibald C. “A.C.” Koger; two sons, Jerome Wilson and his wife Sheron of Grays, and Robert Michael Wilson, Sr. and his wife Cheryl of Walterboro; three brothers, Samuel Smith of Four Oaks, North Carolina, Marion Smith of Hampton and Donald Smith of Grays; and three sisters, Elise Crouse and Evelyn Moody both of Varnville, and Joyce Smith of Grays. There are four grandchildren, Dewaine Wilson, Lynn Wilson, Stephanie Wilson, and Robert M. Wilson, Jr., and five great grandchildren, Trevor, Scott, Zachary, Colin, and Kayleigh Wilson, that also survive. She was predeceased by two sisters, Ethelyn Peeples, and Virginia Lamb.

Flowers will be accepted or the family has suggested that memorial contributions be directed in her memory to: Bedon Baptist Church, 2410 Cottageville Highway, Walterboro, South Carolina 29488.

Family and friends are invited to call from 6:00 until 8:00 this Tuesday evening at The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Homes, Walterboro Chapel, 1193 Bells Highway, Walterboro, 843.538.5408.

Ethel Jones

COLUMBIA — Service for Ethel Mae M. Richardson Jones, 3 p.m. Wednesday: First Nazareth Baptist Church. Burial: Red Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. Bostick-Tompkins F.H. is in charge. Born in Eastover to John and Fannie M. Gunter Mender, she died April 17, 2005. Surviving: children, Jesse Richardson, Carolyn Jones; grandson, Tim Bush; brother, William Mender; niece, Emma Walker.

Deborah T. Carature

CHAPIN — Graveside services for Deborah Toler Carature, 50, of 116 Fairway Ridge Dr., Chapin will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, April 20, 2005, in Bush River Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday, April 19, 2005, at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Irmo/St. Andrews Chapel.

Mrs. Carature died Saturday, April 16, 2005, in Lexington Medical Center, after a brief illness. Born November 23, 1954, in Derby, CT, she was the daughter of the late Rubin Toler and Margaret Igrace Shay. She graduated from Manchester Community College, Manchester, CT with a degree in Occupational Therapy. She worked in various hospitals in Connecticut and was a volunteer for the Special Olympics in Connecticut and South Carolina.

She leaves to cherish her memory, her husband of twenty-eight years, Frank Carature; children, Kristi Lyn and Ryan F. Carature; sister, Linda Pasnault; brother, Kenneth Toler, both of CT; and many nieces, nephews and loving friends.

Mary Hunter

HARTSVILLE — Funeral services for Mary McKiever Hunter, 88, will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 20, 2005, at First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Dr. Jeri Parris Perkins will officiate with burial in Magnolia Cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Tuesday, April 19, 2005, from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church building Fund, 213 W. Home Ave., Hartsville, SC 29550.

Mrs. Hunter, widow of Macon G. Hunter, died Sunday, April 17, 2005. Born in Sumter, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Daniel and Lucile Baker McKiever. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church. She was employed with the Hartsville Chamber of Commerce, Coker College as an assistant librarian, and West Hartsville Elementary School. She was a member of the Thursday Study Club.

Surviving are her sons and daughters-in-law, Macon and Ann Marie Hunter of Hartsville, S.C., McKiever and Ethel Hunter of Boone, N.C.; sister, Virginia M. McLaurin of Florence, S.C.; brother, Daniel Joseph McKiever of Birmingham, AL; grandchildren, Duncan M. Hunter, Daniel Hunter, Maggie Hunter, Kiever Hunter. She was preceded in death by her sister, Lucile McKiever.

Sam Glenn

GASTON — Services for Thomas “Sam” Colie Glenn, 69, will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 20, 2005, at South Lexington Baptist Church with interment to follow in Southland Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 19, 2005, at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel. Memorials may be made to South Lexington Baptist Church, 116 Brevard Pkwy., Lexington, SC 29073.

Mr. Glenn died Monday, April 18, 2005. Born on April 21, 1935, in Gaston, S.C., he was the son of Colie Blease and Laura Busbee Glenn. He was a member of South Lexington Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Nevelyn “Sissy” Glenn of Gaston; son, Artie Glenn of Gaston: son and daughter-in-law, Tony and Yvette Glenn of Lexington; brother, Charles D. Glenn of Gaston; grandchildren, Madyson and Thomas Glenn.
