Lillian Nicholson

SALUDA — Mary Lillian Padgett Nicholson, 91, of 489 Hunters Lane, died Tuesday, April 19, 2005, at Saluda Nursing Center.

Born in Newberry County, a daughter of the late Wade and Nettie Vines Padgett, she was the wife of the late Ben Coleman Nicholson. Mrs. Nicholson was a homemaker and a member of Salem Baptist Church, where she served as the church pianist for forty years and was a member of the W.M.U. She was a devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother.

Surviving are a son and daughter in-law, Ben Carroll and Linder Nicholson, Sr. of Saluda, three daughters and sons in-law, Norma N. and Richard Long of Newberry, Dixie N. and Joseph Havird of Saluda and Susan N. and Roger Kirkland of Batesburg, fifteen grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

A son, Donald Coleman Nicholson, and a grandson, Buford Long, preceded Mrs. Nicholson in death.

The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 P.M. Wednesday evening at Ramey Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be 3 P.M. Thursday, April 21, 2005, at Salem Baptist Church with the Rev. Rod Elliot officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Salem Baptist Church, 2226 Denny Highway, Saluda, SC 29138.

John H. Nobles

SWANSEA — Services for John Howard Nobles, 53, will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 21, 2005, at Westside Holiness Church with interment to follow in Riverside Cemetery in North, S.C. Visitation will be held from 6-9 p.m. on Wednesday, April 20, 2005, at Westside Holiness Church. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210.

Mr. Nobles died Monday, April 18, 2005. He was the son of Lena Mae Fendley Nobles of Cayce and the late Barney J. Nobles. He was a member of Westside Holiness Church.

He is survived by his wife, Bonnie Hutto Nobles of Swansea; daughter, Salena Nobles Kitchens of Swansea; sister, Shirley Parker of Gaston; brothers, Joe Nobles of Cayce, Robbie Nobles of West Columbia; grandchildren, Julia and Waylon Kitchens.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Elaine Dooley.

James Allen Dantzler

ORANGEBURG — James A. “Jimmy” Dantzler, 81, of 474 Pike Blvd., died Monday, April 18, 2005, in The Regional Medical Center. Service is 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 20th, at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church with Rev. Julian Ford officiating. Dukes-Harley Funeral Home is in charge. Mr. Dantzler was born in Orangeburg County, a son of the late Ben Tillman and Pearl Connor Dantzler. He was a retired farmer and retired owner of the Elloree Cotton Gin. He was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church. Mr. Dantzler was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in WWII. Survivors: wife, Lazelle S. Dantzler of the home; a number of nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 356 Amelia St., Orangeburg, SC 29115 or Elloree Museum, P.O. Box 54, Elloree, SC 29047.

Friends may call at the residence.

Walter Medlin

ELGIN — Funeral service for Mr. Walter “Buddy” Eugene Medlin, 84, of Elgin, will be held 11 o’clock Thursday morning, April 21, 2005, at Shives Funeral Home, Colonial Chapel, with The Reverend Otis Lee and The Reverend Nancy Brazell officiating. Interment will follow in Spears Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 o’clock Wednesday evening at the funeral home.

Mr. Medlin died Tuesday, April 19, 2005. Born in Pontiac, S.C., he was a son of the late Thurman Eugene and Laura Coleman Medlin. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII and had retired from MB Khan. Mr. Medlin was a former member of Spears Creek Baptist Church and a life-long farmer.

Survivors include his sons, Thurman Medlin and wife, Carlene, Charlie Medlin and Larry Medlin and wife, Lynne, all of Elgin; daughters, Laura Sue Ford and husband, Larry, of Elgin and Terri Riker and husband, Craig, of Dunedin, FL; grandchildren, Karen, Thurman Jr., Tonya, Shane, and Larry Medlin Jr, Missy Lee, Katie Thompson, Tony Ford and Tonda Owens; great-grandchildren, Brandon, Mitchell, Marcie and Dylon Medlin, Michael Bateman, Brook and Brian Snider, Mattie Britt, Kailia and Jesika Ford, Shelby Owens; siblings, Ezell “Boots” Medlin, Myrtis Brown, Estelle Walker and Naomi Martin. Mr. Medlin was formerly married to Gladys Neese. In addition to his parents, Mr. Medlin was preceded in death by great-granddaughter, Toni Ford, and seven brothers and sisters.

Ernest Hughes

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. — Ernest Hughes died Tuesday morning at the age of 96. Ernest’s daughter, Sandy Hughes Pryor, lives here in Columbia with her husband, Robert. Ernest will be missed by his loving family of ten children, 23 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren. Services for Ernest will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 20, 2005, at Morris-Baker Funeral Home in Johnson City.

Mary A. Milam

LAURENS — Mary Abell Milam, 84, of 1 Martha Franks Drive, widow of James Eugene “Jimmy” Milam, died Monday, April 18, 2005, at Martha Franks Baptist Retirement Center.

Born in Lowrys, she was a daughter of the late Stuart Starr and Winnie Crawford Abell. During World War II she was an air traffic controller in Washington , D.C.

She was a graduate of Converse College and a former School Teacher at Ford School. Mrs. Milam was a member of Laurens First Presbyterian Church, President of Women of the Church, active in Presbytery Women of the Church and an Elder.

She was the last surviving member of her family.

Graveside services will be 2 P.M. Wednesday, April 20, 2005, in Laurens City Cemetery conducted by Rev. Marc Coker.

The family will be at the home of Mike Milam, 208 Owings Street, and will receive friends at the cemetery following the service.

Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 400 W. Main Street, Laurens, SC 29360, or to a charity of one’s choice.

Bertha Thomas Kennerly

COLUMBIA — Services for Mrs. Bertha Thomas Kennerly, 88, will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at Bushy Pond Baptist Church, Norway, S.C., with burial in the church cemetery. Wake services will be held 7 p.m. this evening at Leevy’s Funeral Home, Taylor Street Chapel. Surviving are her daughters, Evelyn Davis and Janet Seals; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild.

Mabel B. Eargle

LEESVILLE — Services for Mabel Bouknight Eargle, 81, will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Cedar Grove Lutheran Church with the Rev. Gary Brandenburg and Rev. Kathleen Panning officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will follow in the Miles T. Cullum Education Building. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Saluda Nursing Center, P.O. Box 398, Saluda, SC 29138, The Circle Volunteer Department, 3321 Columbia Hwy., Leesville, SC 29070 or Cedar Grove Lutheran Church, 1220 Cedar Grove Road, Leesville, 29070. Barr-Price Funeral Home, Historic B-L Chapel, is assisting the family.

Mrs. Eargle died Monday, April 18, 2005. Born in Lexington County, a daughter of the late Ray and Lola Roof Bouknight, she was a member of Cedar Grove Lutheran Church and a housewife.

Surviving are her husband, Vivian J.E. Eargle; son and daughter-in-law, Ervin and Dotty Eargle of Leesville; daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Darden Sharp of Casper, CA, Faye and David Risinger of Leesville; brothers, Raymond, Karl, Jimmy, Tommy, Jack Bouknight of West Columbia; sisters, Rosalie Eargle of Leesville, Violet Bouknight of West Columbia; grandchildren, Laura Sharp and Scott Klein of Union City, CA, Jeffrey Risinger of Ft. Worth, TX. She was predeceased by a brother, Harold Bouknight.

She was a true and loving Christian wife, mother, confidant and friend, a lady we all admired and respected who kept our family together. We will miss her dearly but know she is in a wonderful place.

Modell Anderson

NEESES — Services with burial for Modell R. Anderson, 94, widow of Wil Anderson, are 1 p.m. Friday (noon viewing) at Bushy Pond Baptist Church, Norway. Visitation is 4-7 tonight: Fulmer’s Funeral Home, Springfield. Born in Orangeburg Co. to Isiah and Mattie Reed, she died April 18, 2005, in Orangeburg Nursing Home. Surviving: stepdaughter, Inez Williams; niece and nephew, Marilyn and William Scott.

John White

NEWBERRY — Services with burial for John Albert White, 82, 3 p.m. today: Brown Chapel Baptist Church, Jenkinsville. Wilson Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Fairfield Co. to Rev. Lee and Agnes White, he died April 17, 2005. Surviving: wife, Lovely; children, Victoria, Benjamin, Ida White, Serphine Willingham, Johnnie Mae Baxter; siblings, Roosevelt, Moses White, Lizzie Pearson, Agnes Nelson, Mamie Robinson.

James Belton

COLUMBIA — Homegoing Service for will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Bostick-Tompkins Funeral Home with burial to follow in Memorial Gardens of Columbia. Born in Blythewood to Mitt and Alice Belton, he died April 18, 2005. Surviving are his children, Michael Belton, Sean Johnson and Tammie Quaye; siblings, Clara Daniels, Mary Abel, Estell and Harvey Belton; two grandchildren.

Lonnie Way

WEST COLUMBIA — Funeral services for Lonnie Lee Way, 59, will be held Friday, April 22, 2005, at 11 a.m. at Rockton Baptist Church, Winnsboro, conducted by the Rev. Howard Dickson and the Rev. Jim Newman. Burial will be at 3 p.m. in Crestlawn Memorial Gardens in Orangeburg, S.C., with military honors. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Pope Funeral Home.

Mr. Way, son of the late Lonnie Way and the late Ruby Padgett Way Carson, was born March 27, 1946, in Orangeburg, S.C. Mr. Way died Monday, April 18, 2005. He served in Vietnam with the United States Marines and was discharged May 28, 1968, with the rank of Sgt. He was of the Baptist faith, an avid golfer, a member of the Fairfield Country Club and had received associate degrees from Columbia Business College. He was a retired accountant with the S.C. Highway Department.

Mr. Way is survived by a son, Lonnie Forest Bambas of Alabama and a sister, Barbara W. Williams of Orangeburg, three special nieces and a loving friend and companion, Patricia LeGrand.

Pope Funeral Home of Winnsboro is assisting the Way family.

Harold Bragg

GASTON — Harold Daniel Bragg, 63, died Wednesday, April 20, 2005, in Columbia, S.C.

Born in Hiltonia, GA, he was the son of the late Roy T. and Eunice Williams Bragg. He was an Army Vietnam veteran and a retired construction worker with K.B. Homes.

Funeral services will be held Friday, April 22, 2005, at 2 p.m. at Mole Funeral Home Chapel in Barnwell, S.C., with Rev. Brett Gardner officiating. Burial with military rites will be held in Woodridge Memorial Park in Lexington, S.C. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Thursday evening at Mole Funeral Home.

Survivors include: wife, Margaret Kennedy Bragg of Gaston, SC; sons, Harold Daniel (Danny) Bragg II of West Columbia and Collin Mitchell Bragg of Gaston, SC; daughters, Lisa Ayer Mundy of Williston and Sheila Ayer Mathis of West Columbia; sister, Peggy B. Meeks of Waynesboro, GA; 5 grandchildren; special friends, Jim and Robert Cook of Beaufort, SC. He was predeceased by a brothers, Jerry Bragg.
