Rosa Taft White

COLUMBIA — Rosa Taft White, 60, died Tuesday, April 19th, at Midlands Center in Columbia, where she was a long-time resident. She was born in Greenville, S.C., the daughter of the late Rosa Thomas White and James Benjamin White of Winnsboro. She was preceded in death by her brother, Bennie.

The family would like to thank the staff at Midlands Center for their years of loving care. Rosa had multiple disabilities and they enabled her to live a life of grace and dignity, and be a valued member of the Midlands community.

A graveside service will be held on Sunday, May 1st, at noon at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Ridgeway.

Memorials may be made to the Family Council at Midlands Center, 8301 Farrow Road, Columbia SC 29203.

Martha Connelly Austin

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Entered into rest on Tuesday, April 19, 2005, at the residence after suffering from lupus for many years, Mrs. Martha Connelly Austin, 61, educator, beloved wife of Stewart E. Austin.

Mrs. Austin was a native of Richmond, VA, raised in Moultrie, GA and lived in the Augusta area for many years. She began her teaching career in Augusta with the Richmond County Board of Education and also taught in many areas of the Southeast as well as Wildflecken, Germany on an American military base. Later in her career, she taught adults and helped to initiate upgrades in adult learning curriculum that were implemented in other adult programs across the country.

Mrs. Austin is survived by her husband of 40 years, Stewart E. Austin; two daughters, Lauri Ann Hill (son-in-law, Richard Allen Hill) and Heather Connelly Austin and two grandsons, Austin James Lantz and Knox Andrew Hill.

The family will receive friends at the Thomas Poteet and Son Funeral Directors on Friday, April 22, 2005 at 6 p.m. and a memorial service will follow there at the chapel beginning at 7 p.m. Rev. Gerald Varner and Rev. David Robinson will officiate the service.

Jeraldine A. Thomas

FAIRFAX — Mrs. Jeraldine A. Thomas, wife of Lenwood Rizer Thomas Jr., died Tuesday morning. She was 77.

Mrs. Thomas was born Nov. 16, 1927, the daughter of the late Frank Jerry Adams and Lena Loadholt Adams. She was a retired hairdresser and a member of Fairfax First Baptist Church where she was a very active member.

Surviving besides her husband are 2 sons: Lenwood Rizer Thomas III and wife, Jean Ward Thomas of Fairfax and Joseph Michael Thomas and wife, Margaret Miller Thomas of Orangeburg; 1 daughter: Nancy Rentz and husband, David Rentz Sr. of Columbia; 6 grandchildren: Tara Lynn Beach, Lenwood Rizer Thomas IV, Sara Jean Thomas, David Rentz Jr., Crystal Lynn Rentz and Deanna Thomas; 5 great-grandchildren: LeAnna Gunnells, Clint Gunnells, Savannah Thomas, Madison Thomas and Lenwood R. Thomas V; 4 sisters: Lillian Barnes of Wilson, N.C., Ernestien Frier of Columbia, Lois Rivers of Rigland and Sara Cusaac of Virginia Beach, Va.

Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. at Fairfax First Baptist Church with burial following in Fairfax cemetery. Visitation will be held Thursday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Smith-Rhoden Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, American Heart Association, American Cancer Society and Fairfax First Baptist Church.

Leila B. Perry

WINNSBORO — Services for Leila B. Perry, widow of Simon Perry, are 3 p.m. today at Greater Mt. Zion Baptist Church. O.E. Manigault Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Fairfield Co. to John and Bessie Boulware, she is survived by children, Kathaveen, Josephine, Aretha, John, Willie Perry; siblings, Cora Milton, Mamie Brown, Geneva, Arvelia Young, Ezel, Julius Boulware; 9 grandchild, 2 great-grandchildren.

Virginia Scott

WILLISTON — A memorial service for Virginia Blair Nixon Scott will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, April 23, 2005, at Folk Funeral Home Chapel in Williston with burial in Williston Cemetery, with Rev. John Nixon officiating.

Virginia was born August 13, 1916, in Charlotte, N.C., and died February 19, 2005. She was preceded in death by her husband, George, her parents, John and Lucille Nixon, by her brothers, Jack, Bob and Kenneth, and by her beloved grandson, Blair. She is survived by her children: George Scott and wife Pat, Bob Scott and wife Jackie, Judith Cheek and husband Tom, and Melinda Youngblood; and by her grandchildren: Ashley Crane and husband Daniel, Heather Youngblood, David Wolf, Eric, Chris, John and Susan Seamans; and by her special friend, Pat Chesney. Her great-grandchildren, Reilley and Kelley Youngblood, Andrew Williams and Brittani Mayoral were her joy in her last years. She is also survived by many loved family members including sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Virginia loved life, people, books, music and traveling. She had a great sense of humor and lived her life with style and elegance. Her beautiful and vibrant spirit will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Mary Hamilton

CHESTER — Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Cauthen Hamilton, 81, of 128 Sunset Drive, Chester, S.C., widow of David Lee Hamilton, died Tuesday, April 19, 2005, at her residence.

Graveside memorial services will be noon p.m. Friday, April 22, 2005, in Evergreen Cemetery, officiated by Reverend Clay Waldrip.

She was born in Richburg, S.C., on November 15, 1923, to the late Durham Asbury Cauthen and the late Alma Elizabeth McFadden. She was a graduate of Richburg High School, where she excelled in tennis and basketball, and was a homemaker and member of First Baptist Church. She was a member of the Gleaners Sunday School Class. Mrs. Hamilton was also the first woman to pilot an airplane solo in Chester County in 1943. She was active in her church and community.

Surviving are her children, Dee and Maureen Hamilton of Litchfield, S.C., Milton and Peggy Hamilton of Chester, S.C., and Durham and Melissa Hamilton of Woodstock, GA; her grandchildren, Douglas and Jill Josey of Chester, S.C., Marvin Robinson of Chester, S.C., Milton Hamilton, Jr. of Augusta, GA, Raymond Hamilton of The Citadel, Patrick Hamilton of Chester, S.C., David and Lauren Hamilton of Litchfield, S.C., Lesslie Hamilton of Atlanta, GA, Richard Stoney, Jr. of Charleston, S.C., Durham Jr. and Elizabeth Hamilton of Woodstock, GA; her great-grandchildren, Elizabeth and Mary Douglas Josey of Chester, S.C. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Lee Hamilton Robinson.

Sarah Charles Harvey

COLUMBIA — A memorial service for Mrs. Sarah C. Harvey of Columbia will be held at noon Friday, April 22, 2005, in the chapel of Greenlawn Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Palmetto Chapter, P.O. Box 7044, Columbia, SC 29202. As a way to help other people, Mrs. Harvey’s wishes were to donate her human remains to the University of South Carolina School of Medicine for research. The family has entrusted Greenlawn Funeral Home for the arrangements.

Mrs. Harvey passed away Tuesday, April 19, 2005. Born on January 17, 1926, in Saluda, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Charlie Lyman Charles and Elizabeth Milligan Charles. She was a retired federal employee from MEPS at Fort Jackson after 29 years of dedicated service. Mrs. Harvey was also a Rosie the Riveter during WWII, in which she helped build planes in Utah.

Surviving are her children, Kenneth Harvey of Columbia, Linda Collins and her husband Steve of West Columbia, and Vicki Merritt and her husband Philip of North, S.C.; grandchildren, Ronald Collins, Pamela Collins and Amy Everette and her husband James; great-grandchild, Elizabeth Everette; and sister, Betty Charles of Greenville, S.C.

Mrs. Harvey was predeceased by four brothers, Carmen White, George Allen Charles, David Polk Charles, and Charlie Louis Charles, and one sister, Ida Mae Rothell.

Marling Judson Elliott

COLUMBIA — Service for Marling Judson Elliott, 87, of White Rock, will be held Friday in Shady Grove Wesleyan Church, Colfax, N.C. Hayworth, Miller, Cain Funeral Home, Kernersville, N.C., is in charge. Dunbar Funeral Home is in charge locally. Memorials may be made to Southern Wesleyan University, P.O. Box 1020, Central, S.C. 29630.

Dr. Elliott died Tuesday, April 19, 2005. He was the son of the late James William and Lura Miner Elliott. He was a retired professor of religion at Central Wesleyan College, Central, S.C.

Surviving are his wife, Francene Cude Elliott of White Rock; and daughter and son-in-law, Rosalie and Jim Browning of Columbia.

Johnny Earl Shelley

NICHOLS — Johnny Earl Shelley, age 91, died Tuesday, April 19, 2005, in Conway Nursing Center. Born in Horry County, he was the son of the late Bert and Letha Collins Shelley. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille Blanton Shelley and a daughter, Iris Snell. Mr. Shelley is survived by one daughter, Elaine Whitener of North Myrtle Beach. Two grandchildren, David Snell of Columbia and Susan S. Busbee of Charlotte, N.C. Also, four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 21, at Mt. Olive Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Blanton Family Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Blanton Family Cemetery, 15936 Hwy. 19, Nichols, SC 29581. Meares Funeral Home of Mullins is honored to serve the family of Mr. Shelley.

Hubert Hughes

NEWBERRY - Hubert Hughes, 105, widower of Elma Christine Schoen Hughes, died April 19, 2005. Born in Port Maddog, Wales, Great Britain, he was a son of the late Arthur Frederick and Mary Ellen Edkin Hughes. He was a retired Bar Harbor Pilot and Rigger and was also a 32nd degree Mason.

Surviving are his daughter, Ellen Mary Maddalena of Newberry, a son, Hugh Arthur Hughes of Duluth, GA, six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren. No services will be held.

McSwain-Evans Funeral Home is in charge.

Bettye Jean Fuller Buckner

VERO BEACH, Fla. — Services for Bettye Jean Fuller Buckner, 58, 2 p.m. today (visitation 12:30-1:30 p.m.) at New Testament Faith Ministries Church, burial in Gifford Cemetery, Gifford. Stone Brothers Funeral Home, Gifford, is in charge. Born in Ailey, Ga., she died April 16, 2005. She received her formal education in Columbia, S.C. Surviving: children, Ellis Jr., Elliot, El’Lise Buckner; sister, Maxine Cunningham.

Ralph “Red” Jefferson

NORTH — Ralph “Red” Jefferson, 62, of North, died Tuesday, April 19, 2005.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, April 22, 2005, at Culler-McAlhany Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Joseph Williams and Rev. David Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Sharon Crossroads United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Jefferson was born in Lexington County, a son of the late Tim and Linnie Busby Jefferson. He had retired from SCDOT. He was predeceased by a daughter, Janet Hall, and a brother, Guy R. Jefferson.

Survivors include his wife, Jacqueline Oakes Jefferson, of the home; a daughter, Linda Loadholt, of Orangeburg; two sons: Allen Oakes, of Orangeburg; and Charles Oakes, of Pelion; a sister: Jalina McBride, of Sandy Run; two brothers and sisters-in-law: Lawrence and Frances Jefferson, of Cayce: and Timmy “Boo” and Rita Jefferson, of Woodford; 7 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; and 5 nephews

The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Culler-McAlhany Funeral Home and other times at the home of Timmy Jefferson, 2134 Woodford Road, Woodford.
