Myrtle Rush

CAMDEN — Funeral services for Myrtle Jean Rush, 64, of Camden, will be held Monday, November 8, 2004 at 4 p.m. at Mt. Olivet Baptist Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Rev. Steve Lee, Rev. Mark Jones and Rev. Buster Morris. The family will receive friends Sunday, November 7, 2004 from 7-8 p.m. at Kornegay Funeral Home, Camden Chapel. Memorials may be made to Mt. Olivet Baptist Church Building Fund, 608 Black River Road, Camden, SC 29020.

Ms. Rush died Friday, November 5, 2004. Born in Camden, she was the daughter of the late Lloyd Black Rush Sr. She was a member and longtime secretary of Mt. Olivet Baptist Church and the Sunshine Club. Ms. Rush had retired from Allen’s Shoe Store as manager.

Surviving are her mother, Lois Dixon Rush; 2 brothers, Buster Rush and his wife, Jean, and Earl Rush, all of Camden; brother-in-law, Donald Capell and his wife, Margaret Ann of Lugoff; nieces and nephews; great-nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Gwen Rush Capell.

Walter Shockley

ATLANTA — Services for Walter Ray Shockley, 80, 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Apalachee UMC; burial: Oconee Hill, Athens; visitation 5-7 tonight at H.M. Patterson & Son. He died Nov. 3, 2004. Surviving: wife, Virginia Davis Shockley; children, Lisa Moery, David, Jenifer Shockley; grands, Sophia, Phillipa Moery; siblings, Annette Riden, Martha Kemp, Hugh Sr., Leonard, John, Peter, Joseph Shockley, Barbara Smith.

Christine Sligh

NEWBERRY — Services for Christine Sligh will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Bethlehem Baptist Church, where she was a member, with burial in Werts Cemetery. F.B. Pratt & Son Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Greenville to Odell Satterwhite and Leona Sligh, she died Nov. 3, 2004. Surviving: companion David Lindsay; daughter, Barbara Ford; grandson; nieces, Lesa, Katie Lindsay, Daisy Lindler; nephews; cousins.

Richard Sligh

NORTH CHARLESTON — Entered into eternal rest the afternoon of November 2, 2004, Richard Milton Sligh, 85, husband of Frances Bunch Sligh. Residence, North Charleston, South Carolina. The relatives and friends of Mr. And Mrs. Richard M. Sligh are invited to attend the Memorial Service of the former in J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., North Area Chapel this Saturday afternoon, November 6, 2004 at two o’clock. Committal Service will be private. The family will receive friends at Stuhr’s North Area Chapel, 2119 Dorchester Road, N. Charleston, from one o’clock until the time of the service.

Born May 10, 1919 in Columbia, SC, Mr. Sligh was the son of the late Ira M. Sligh and Monnier Hathcock Sligh. He was a graduate of Lexington High School and attended the Citadel. Mr. Sligh was a charter member and a deacon at Cooper River Baptist Church. He was a United States Navy veteran serving during World War II and a retired Group Superintendent Structural with the Charleston Naval Shipyard, where he worked for 42 years. He was a Mason, a member of the Civil Air Patrol, a licensed private pilot, coached Dixie Youth Baseball and was a recipient of the Civilian Meritorious Service Award.

Surviving Mr. Sligh are his wife of 52 years, Franches B. Sligh of N. Charleston; two sons, Richard M. Sligh, Jr. of North Augusta, SC and James Ira Sligh of N. Charleston; a daughter, Peggy Sligh of Raleigh, NC and a sister, Isabel S. Harter of Augusta, GA. Mr. Sligh is also survived by two grandchildren, David Richard Sligh of Columbia, SC and Darby Elizabeth Sligh of North Augusta, SC.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 5900 Core Road, Suite 504, N. Charleston, SC 29406 or to the Alzheimer’s Association, Palmetto Chapter of SC, PO Box 80459, Charleston, SC 29416-0459.

Craig Rollings

SWANSEA — Memorial Services for Thomas Craig Rollings, 68, of Swansea, will be held at 2:00 pm Sunday, November 7, 2004 in Midway Baptist Church, Kershaw, SC. The family will receive friends at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Robert Plyler following the service. Memorials may be made to Southerncare Hospice, 720 Gracern Road, Columbia, SC 29210 or Calhoun County EMS.

Mr. Rollings, died Thursday, November 4, 2004. Born in Jefferson, SC, he was a son of the late Wilbert and Edith P. Rollings. Mr. Rollings was a retired owner/operator of a community grocery store.

Surviving are his wife, Margaret Plyler Rollings, daughter and son-in-law, Pamela and Johnny Broome; son, Thomas C. Rollings, Jr.; sister, Frances Roberts; grandchildren, William, Rhett, Lauren and Shari; aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Mr. Rollings was predeceased by a sister, Sally Davis.

The family would like to give special thanks to the Calhoun County EMS staff for the special care and attention which they provided.

Donnie Taylor

COLUMBIA — Services for Donnie Harrison Taylor, 2 pm today at Central Baptist Church; burial: Serenity Memorial Gardens. He was the son of Fannie H. Taylor and the late Carlton Taylor & Hattie H. Wilson, he died Nov. 3, 2004. Surviving: siblings, Nathaniel, Kenneth, Larry, Andrew, Doyace, Carol, Paula Wilson, Ronnie, Henrietta Taylor, Belinda Edwards, Andrea Johnson, Commie Holmes, Jenny Scott.

John Smith Jr.

ROCK HILL — Services for John Mark Smith Jr., 79, WWII veteran, 2 p.m. Sunday at Greene Funeral Home, Northwest. Born in Greenville to John Sr. and Clara Freeman Smith, he died Nov. 5, 2004. He will be remembered for his sense of humor. Surviving: wife, Ann Ashley Smith; children, John Smith III, Margaret Kalmback; grands, David Robinson, Mason, Mary Smith, Susan Gilfillan; great-grand, Thomas Robinson.

Janet Windham

SCRANTON — Services with burial for Janet Leigh Windham, 55, 4 p.m. Sunday at Friendfield Pentecostal Holiness Church; visitation 7-9 tonight: Layton-Anderson Funeral Home, Florence. Born in Baltimore to Louis and Irene Brandau Deck, she died Nov. 5, 2004. Surviving: spouse, Leroy Jr.; children, Scott Windham, Cindy Boyington; sisters, Margie Fredricks, Deloris Walkoff, Shirley Knarr, Gloria Carroll.

Robert West

CHESTER — Services for Robert Wallace West, 71, owner West Construction Co., 2 p.m. Sunday: First Freewill Baptist Church; burial: Chester Memorial Gardens; visitation 6-7:30 tonight: Barron Funeral Home. Born in Lockhart to Richard and Emma Gibson West, he died Nov. 4, 2004. Surviving: children, Brooke Jessee, Robbie, Sandy, Shari West, Kim Johnson, Nikki Enfinger; niece, Ann Sweatt; grandchildren.

Garry Weeks

CHAPIN — Services for William Garrison “Garry” Weeks, 33, will be held at 2:00 pm on Sunday, November 7, 2004 at Chapin Baptist Church. Honorary pallbearers will be the Chapin Baptist Student Ministry. Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, November 8, 2004 in Northview Cemetery, Dublin, GA. The family will receive friends from 5-8 pm on Saturday, November 6, 2004 at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Chapin Chapel. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Chapin Baptist Church Student Ministry.

Mr. Weeks died Tuesday, November 2, 2004. Born in Dublin, GA, he was the son of Carol Garrison Weeks and the late Rev. Bill Weeks. He was a member of Chapin Baptist Church where he served for seven years as Youth Pastor. Through his ministry at Chapin Baptist Church Garry impacted the lives of thousands of students at church and in the Chapin community. Garry was a loving husband, son, and brother.

He is survived by his wife, Angel Snipes Weeks of Chapin; sister and brother-in-law, Sandy and Keith Key of Atlanta, GA, his mother, Carol Weeks of Dublin, GA; uncle, Andy & aunt, Lanetta Weeks of Houston Texas ; nieces and nephew, Jordan, Carmen and Candler Key.

Alice Thames

MANNING — Services for Alice Marie Ragin Thames, 91, retired nurse’s aide, widow of Rufus Thames Sr., are 2 p.m. Sunday at Manning First Baptist Church with burial in Manning Cemetery. Visitation is 6-8 tonight at Stephens Funeral Home. Born in Kingstree to William and Fanny Bradham Ragin, she died Nov. 4, 2004. Surviving: sons, R. Boyd Jr., Charles Sr. Rhames; sister, Edna Ward; grandchildren.

Freddie Taylor Jr.

COLUMBIA — Services for Freddie “Luke” Taylor Jr., 3 p.m. Sunday: Palmer Memorial Chapel; burial: Palmetto Cemetery. Born in Columbia to Freddie Sr. and Kathleen Singleton Taylor, he died Nov. 3, 2004. Surviving: former wife, Julia A. Taylor; daughters, Andrea Robinson-Neal, Tonya Taylor; siblings, James, Benjamin, Jacob, Esau, Stephaney, Andrew Taylor, Vernell Williams, Ruth Smith; grandchildren.

Jessie Lewis

MULLINS — Mrs. Jessie Derrick Lewis, 90, died Thursday, November 4, 2004 at her residence in Mullins.

Mrs. Lewis, school and social worker, was born in Johnston, Edgefield County, South Carolina on November 13, 1913, the daughter of Jesse Lee and Belle Carson Derrick. She graduated from Johnston High School in 1931 and received her A.B. Degree from Winthrop College in 1935. She married John Derham Lewis on July 27, 1940 and from this union had two children: John Pickens Derham Lewis and Linda Derrick Lewis.

Mrs. Lewis was a teacher and guidance counselor for 24 years in the Mullins Elementary School. She was a member of the Mullins Welfare Board from 1940 to 1950. She was a member of the South Carolina State Board of Social Services from 1952 to 1975. She was the drive chairman of the Marion County Unit of the American Cancer Society from 1952 to 1954. She was a Trustee of the Mullins Public Schools from 1947 to 1957, serving as Chairman from 1952 to 1957. She was a Trustee of the South Carolina Baptist Summer Camp from 1956 to 1960. She was a recipient of the Citizen of the Year Award from the Lions Club in 1949. She was a member of the Mullins First Baptist Church where she was President of the Women’s Missionary Union from 1942 to 1950, and was also Adult Bible Sunday School Teacher from 1940 to 1980 and a member of the church Building Committee in 1960.

Mrs. Lewis was elected to the Mullins City Council in 1974 and served on the council until 1986. She was a Mayor Pro Tem during her term from 1984 to 1986. She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Educational Society. She retired from the Public School System in 1979. She was a member of the Marion County Historical Society and a member of the Marion County Museum.

Surviving Mrs. Lewis are one son: John Pickens Derham Lewis of Mullins and one daughter: Linda Derrick Lewis (Starling Speed) Ray of Greenwood, SC. Four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Graveside services will be held on Saturday, November 6, 2004 at Cedardale Cemetery in Mullins at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to the Mullins First Baptist Church Building Fund.

Blanche Wyatt

YORK — Services for Blanche Wallace Wyatt, 93, widow of Elvester Wyatt, 2 p.m. Sunday at Zion UMC; burial: Canaan UMC Cemetery, Smyrna; visitation 6-8 tonight at Bratton Funeral Home. Born in S.C. to Walter and Martha Hogue Wallace, she died Nov. 5, 2004. Surviving: children, Bob, Albert, Emmett, Joe, Tom, Bennie Wyatt, Kathleen McDaniel, Helen Neelands, Zell Biddy; grandchildren; great-grandchildren.

Lucille Amick

LITTLE MOUNTAIN — Services for Lucille Shealy Amick will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Sunday at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will follow the service in the church parlor.

Memorials may be made to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, PO Box 196, Little Mountain, SC 29075 or the charity of one’s choice. McSwain-Evans Funeral Home is in charge.

Mrs. Amick, 96, widow of J. Otto Amick, died November 5, 2004. Born in Little Mountain, she was a daughter of the late Ernest C. and Nina Epting Shealy. She was a graduate of Newberry College and did further studies at the University of S.C. She retired after 42 years as a school teacher and principal from the Lexington County Schools having worked for the Brookland-Cayce System. She was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church of Little Mountain and a former member of Faith Lutheran Church of West Columbia.

Surviving are a sister, Ernestine Caldwell of Little Mountain.
