Blanche Blue Fair

LAURINBURG, N.C. — Mrs. Blanche Blue Fair, 89, of 12460 Purcell Drive, died Tuesday, April 19, 2005, at her residence.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Friday in the Blue Family Cemetery, officiated by the Rev. Dr. Tom Dendy.

She is survived by a nephew, John Dorsey of Laurinburg and a niece, Barbara Cluck of Laurinburg.

Born December 1, 1915, in Scotland County, she was a daughter of the late Angus and Mary Coble Blue. Until the 1960s, she operated the family farming business. She, along with her late husband, was active in the realty business in Cherry Grove Beach, S.C., and also developed Lake Wood Hills in Laurinburg.

Memorials may be made to the Scotland County Humane Society, 1401 West Blvd., Laurinburg, NC 28325.

Visitation will be from 6-7:30 p.m. Thursday at the McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium.

Margaret Jones

HARTSVILLE — Funeral services for Margaret Pitts Jones, 75, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 23, 2005, at Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Tim Cole, Hazel Mixon, J.L. Dutton, Marvin Honeycut and Randy Lambert will officiate with burial in Harris Creek Cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Friday, April 22, 2005, from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mrs. Jones, widow of John Wesley “Dub” Jones, died Thursday, April 21, 2005. Born in Piedmont, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Robert E. and Cora Harris Pitts.

She was educated in the Anderson County school system and attended Hartsville Church of God, where she taught Sunday School over the years from the beginner class to the adult class. She loved to sing gospel music. She sang in several churches.

She was a mother to all who knew her: to many young children through the years, some relatives, and homeless strangers who needed the love of God and a guiding hand. She helped them all.

Surviving are her sons and daughters-in-law, Bobby “B.J.” Jones of Hartsville, S.C., Wayne and Dawn Jones of Florence, S.C., Jonathan and Mary Jones of Memphis, TN; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; 2 nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother, J. E. Pitts, and her great-granddaughter, Brittney Smythe.

Katharine Wade

AMERICUS, Ga. — Services for Katharine Graham Wade, 86, are 2 p.m. today at Aveleigh Presbyterian Church, burial in Rosemont Cemetery, both in Newberry, S.C. Hancock Funeral Home and Whitaker Funeral Home, Newberry, are in charge. Born in Clinton, S.C., to Bothwell and Katharine Graham, she died April 18, 2005. Surviving: children, Frances, Richard Crozier, Rev. William Jr., Theodosia Wade.

Thomas Grier Weston

COLUMBIA — Memorial service for Mr. Thomas Grier Weston, 60, of Columbia, will be held 3 o’clock Friday afternoon, April 22, 2005, at Park Street Baptist Church with The Reverend Dr. Samuel G. Catoe officiating. A reception will follow the service in the church fellowship hall. The family will receive friends from five-thirty until seven o’clock this (Thursday) evening at Shives Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Park Street Baptist Church, 2204 Park Street, Columbia, SC 29201.

Mr. Weston died Wednesday, April 20, 2005. Born in Charleston, S.C., he was a son of the late Vernon Wylie and Mary Wilbur Weston. He was an active member at Park Street Baptist Church where he sang in the church choir. Mr. Weston volunteered at the VA Hospital and various libraries during school and while living in Charleston. Thomas was a devoted husband to his late wife Barbara, graciously caring for her during her illnesses.

Survivors include his brothers and sisters-in-law, Charles W. and Ellen Moore Weston of Columbia, and Robert V. and Joy Weston of Pacific Grove, CA; an uncle, William C. Wilbur of St. Petersburg, FL; also several cousins, nieces, and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Weston was preceded in death by his wife in 2004, Barbara Sturge Weston.

James Mark Tatham

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Mr. James Mark Tatham, son of Doris Tatham and the late James Tatham, died Sunday, April 17, 2005. Leevy’s Funeral Home, Taylor Street Chapel, Columbia, is in charge. Surviving are his daughter, Iris Tatham; son, Robert Reid; mother, Doris Tatham; brothers, Jimmy and Kenny Tatham; sisters, Yvonne Peak, Marsha Williams (twin sister), Sonja Bryan, and Melissa Tatham.

Sybil E. Swenson

LAKE CITY — Mrs. Sybil Epps Swenson, 83, died Wednesday, April 20, 2005, in a Florence hospital after a short illness.

Mrs. Swenson was born in Florence, S.C., a daughter of the late William Daniel and Ethel Fitch Epps of Cades, SC. She was a graduate of Coker College and retired from the Florence County Schools as a teacher. She was married to Clayton E. Swenson who predeceased her in 1991. Sybil was a long-time member of the Lake City Junior Sorosis Club and enjoyed the wonderful relationship with this loving group. She was also a loyal member of Lake City United Methodist Church where she was a member of Circle #3 of the United Methodist Women. In the past, Sybil served in various leadership positions including President of the United Methodist Women.

Survivors include: Sybil was a loving mother to Clayton E. (Kay) Swenson, Jr., of Durham, NC and Deborah S. McCartha of Columbia. She was a proud grandmother to three grandchildren: Daniel Epps (Christine) Swenson, Kathryn McCartha-Powers (Law) and Amanda Kay Swenson, and one great-grandson, Lawton Powers. She is also survived by a sister, Dena E. Hucks of Hartsville. She was predeceased by a sister, Kathryn Epps Gause.

Funeral service will be at 11 A.M. Friday, April 22, 2005, at the Lake City United Methodist Church with burial in the Lake City Memorial Park.

Memorials may be made to: Lake City United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 818, Lake City, SC 29560.

The family will have visitation from 6-8 P.M. Thursday evening at the funeral home.

Barbara Tyszelman

FORT MILL — Graveside services for Barbara Morris Tyszelman, 66, daughter of the late Herbert and Ellen Morris, will be held at 11 a.m. today, April 21, 2005, in Greenlawn Cemetery, Dillon, directed by Kannady’s Funeral Home, Dillon. She died April 19, 2005. Surviving are daughter, Sherry (Roger) Holcomb and grandson, Drew Holcomb, all of Fort Mill. She was predeceased by brother, Herbert Morris.

Jane Winburn Clarke

GREENVILLE — Margaret Jane Winburn Clarke, 53, of 1516 Sunridge Cove, Greenville, MS, died Monday, April 18, 2005, in Anderson County, S.C., from injuries received in an automobile accident.

Born in Hartsville, S.C., she was the daughter of late John Dewey and Fannie Howle Winburn.

She received a Masters Degree in Accounting from the University of South Carolina and was a CPA with Tarver-Tarver-Kirby & Jackson in Greenville, MS. Jane served in the Peace Corps and was a former Accounting Professor.

She was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church, Greenville, MS, where her husband, Rev. Robert “Bob” T. Clarke III, serves as Pastor.

Surviving also are two daughters: Brittani Clarke Kistner and her husband, Rob, of Columbia, S.C., and Allyson Jane Clarke of Greenville, S.C.; a sister, Mitsy Winburn Ballentine and her husband, Dennis, of Taylors, S.C.; a brother, John Dewey Winburn, III and his wife, Susan of Greer, S.C.; two grandchildren: Abigail Grace Kistner and Wyatt Clarke Kistner; her stepmother, Veta Winburn, of West Columbia, S.C.; two nieces and five nephews.

A memorial service will be conducted Friday, April 22, 2005, at 10 A.M. at Rose Hill Presbyterian Church, Columbia, S.C., with a visitation from 9 A.M. until the hour of service.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, April 23, 2005, at 11 A.M. at Taylors First Baptist Church Cemetery, Taylors, S.C.

The family is at the home of her sister, Mitsy Ballentine, 1 Hillbrook Road, Taylors, S.C.

Evelyn Turnage

CHERAW — Miss Evelyn Lee Turnage, 76, died Tuesday, April 19, 2005. Funeral is 2 p.m. Thursday, April 21, 2005, at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Ruby Cemetery. Visitation is 1-2 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. Miss Turnage was born in High Point, N.C., a daughter of the late Preston Turnage and Sarah Adams Turnage Butler. Evelyn was also preceded in death by a stepbrother, Franklin Butler, and a stepsister, Vera Butler. Survivors: 3 sisters, Dorothy T. Walker of High Point, N.C., Anita T. Berry and Eunice T. (Bobby Joe) Thurman of Cheraw, S.C.; 3 stepbrothers, Robert Butler of High Point, N.C., James Butler of Oklahoma and Ernest Butler of Welcome, N.C.; 1 stepsister, Mildred Thomas of High Point, N.C.; also a number of nieces and nephews. Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home is serving the Turnage family.

Ruth Brown

COLUMBIA — Services for Mrs. Ruth Farr Brown, of 1630 Columbia College Drive, will be held noon Friday at Peaceful Baptist Church with burial in Lincoln Memorial Cemetery, Spartanburg, S.C. Visitation is 7 p.m. today at Palmer Memorial Chapel.

Mrs. Brown died Sunday, April 17, 2005. Born in Spartanburg County, she was the daughter of the late Oscar W. and Hettie Z. Porter Farr. She was the widow of the late Rev. Rufus A. Brown. She was a former member of Greenview First Baptist Church and later became a member of Peaceful Baptist Church. She was Church Mother and served as Assistant Superintendent of the Sunday school and Senior Musical Choir.

Surviving are a sister, Roberta Farr, brother, Paul E. Farr, and her niece and caregiver, Attorney Joyce Farr Cheeks; and a host of nieces and nephews.

William Neal Jr.

COLUMBIA — A memorial service for Mr. William Edgar Neal Jr., 57, of Columbia, will be held 11 o’clock Saturday morning, April 23, 2005, at Shives Funeral Home, Colonial Chapel, with The Reverend Dr. Samuel G. Catoe officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. Memorials may be made to St. Peters Catholic Church, 1529 Assembly Street, Columbia, SC 29201, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or the Appalachian Trail Conference, P.O. Box 807, Harpers Ferry, WV 25425-0807.

Mr. Neal died Monday, April 11, 2005. Born in Kershaw County, S.C., he was a son of the late William E. and Sarah Stover Neal. Educated in the Kershaw Public School System, he graduated from the University of South Carolina. he was formerly with Springs Industries as well as Wal-Mart in the Lancaster area. At the time of his death, he was an employee of Midlands Technical College. Mr. Neal was a member of St. Peters Catholic Church.

Survivors include his three aunts, Nella Small, Eunice Brewington and Nancy S. Williams as well as numerous cousins; his special friends are Patricia Stein and her husband, Johnny, and their daughter, Amy, of Jefferson, S.C., Wendy Mullin of Columbia and Dr. Sam Catoe and his wife, Joyce, of Columbia.

R.B. Cantrell

WHITE ROCK — On the morning of April 20, 2005, R.B. Cantrell left this life to begin a new one. Born in Weatherford, Texas , on January 29, 1922, Mr. Cantrell grew up in Boles Home, a Christian orphanage located near Greenville, Texas . After graduation he worked for a short time in Fort Worth, Texas , then joined the U.S. Navy in December 1941. Shortly before beginning a tour of duty in the South Pacific, Mr. Cantrell married his life long partner, Vivian Larie Cantrell. After completing his military service, Mr. Cantrell worked as an industrial engineer for munitions and ordinance plants in Greenville, Texas and in Minden and Shreveport, Louisiana. Later he completed a Bachelor’s degree, two Master’s degrees and an Ed.D. at East Texas State University, and served as a family counselor for a number of years in the same orphanage in which he was raised. In 1985 Mr. and Mrs. Cantrell retired to Arizona. A faithful member of the Church of Christ, Mr. Cantrell served as a minister for that church for several years in Klondike, Texas and as an elder in the church in Coolidge, Arizona after his retirement there. In 2002 Mr. and Mrs. Cantrell moved to Columbia, S.C., where he was a member of the Palmetto Church of Christ.

Mr. Cantrell is survived by his wife of 63 years, Larie Cantrell, a daughter, Elaine Lacy and son-in-law, Michael Scardaville of Columbia. He was predeceased by another daughter, Jane Colton. He leaves behind five grandchildren, Laura Lacy Mueller of Portland, Oregon, Trey Lacy of Honolulu, Hawaii, Stacy Smalley of New York City, Chad Smalley of Tempe, Arizona, and Whitney Colton of Tempe Arizona, and two great-granddaughters, Gaby Mueller and Hayley Mueller of Portland, Oregon. Mr. Cantrell’s family would like to thank all those who have so lovingly cared for him during his last years, and request that any donations in his memory go to the National Parkinson Foundation, Attention: Mary Ann Sprinkle, 1501 NW 9 th Ave., Bob Hope Rd., Miami, FL 33136-1494.
