David Lee Winters

HAMPTON — Services for David Lee Winters will be 2 p.m. Saturday in Gooding Cemetery near Hampton, directed by Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home in Hampton. Mr. Winters died February 22, 2005, in Florida after an extended illness. Friends may call at the cemetery at the hour of services.

Charles E. Hall

WEST COLUMBIA — Services for Charles Edward Hall, 77, of West Columbia, will be held at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, April 24, 2005, in the Chapel of Thompson Funeral Home of West Columbia, officiated by the Rev. Dr. Donald West. Burial will follow in Crescent Hill Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association or to the American Heart Association.

Mr. Hall, widower of Eula Ardaina Hall, died Thursday, April 21, 2005. Born in Columbia, he was the son of the late Frank and Ella M. Senn Hall. A lifetime area resident, he was a graduate of Olympia High School and was a veteran of the United States Navy. Mr. Hall was a member of Pipefitters Union Local 227 and VFW.

Surviving are his daughters and son-in-law, Debra and Daniel Christiansen of Pelion, Tamira Senn of West Columbia; son and daughter-in-law, Ronald Charles and Tammy Hall of Lexington; stepson and daughter-in-law, Michael and Jean Lucas of Lexington; sisters, Beulah Snare and Jane Brazell of West Columbia, Carol Jean Jackson of Camden, Mary Maloonado of Columbia; brothers, Pete Hall of Santee, Kenneth Hall of Columbia; grandchildren, Miranda Senn, Tamara Stone, Mary Conner, Ashley Christiansen, Brandi Christiansen; and great-grandchildren, Zachary Russo and Haley Russo.

William Jones

LAURENS — Services for William Downs “Blow” Jones, 58, are 2 p.m. Sunday (viewing 1 p.m.) at New Grove Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery. Goins Funeral Home is in charge. Born to Elizabeth Briggs Jones and Joe Henry, he died April 21, 2005. Surviving are wife, Ruby Thompson Jones; children, William Jr., Anthony Jones, Kim Thompson, Denise Walker, Vickie Gailchirst; 8 sisters; 8 grandchildren.

Lula Dixon

HEATH SPRINGS — Services for Lula Dixon, 91, daughter of James and Ideva Hinson Dixon, 3 p.m. Sunday: Pine Grove Freewill Baptist Church, Kershaw. Burial: Catoe Cemetery, Flat Creek Community. Visitation is until 9 tonight at the residence, 612 N. Main St. Mahaffey F.H., Lancaster, is in charge. She died April 22, 2005. Surviving: children, Joyce McDonald, Jo Ann Vogel, Floyd, Gene Dixon, Sandra Foster; more.

Geraldine Ellis

NEWBERRY — Geraldine Bass Ellis, 67, of 21 Railroad Ave., Newberry, S.C., wife of Carroll H. Ellis, died Thursday, April 21, 2005, at her residence.

Mrs. Ellis was born in Newberry, a daughter of the late Ernest and Frances Davis Bass. She was a homemaker and a member of the Newberry Church of God.

Mrs. Ellis is survived by husband of the home; a daughter, Melodi Fran Ellis of Newberry; a son, Jonathan Paul Branton of Lexington, KY; a brother, Steve Bass of Newberry; and three grandchildren, Chelsea Frances Acs, Eric Branton and Chad Branton.

Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Newberry Church of God by the Rev. Daniel Nash. Interment will be in the Springdale Section of Rosemont Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the Whitaker Funeral Home

Memorials may be made to the Newberry Church of God, 2693 College St., Newberry, SC 29108.

Whitaker Funeral Home, 1704 College St., Newberry, SC, is assisting the family.

Richard Burnell

NEWBERRY - Memorial services for Richard S. Burnell, 86, will be held later at Little River United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the church, PO Box 160, Little River, SC 29566. Mr. Burnell died April 21, 2005. Born in Richmond Hills, N.Y., he was a son of the late Edward A. and Elizabeth Walker Schluter. He was a World War II Army veteran, a millwright, a member of Little River United Methodist Church and a Mason.

McSwain-Evans Funeral Home is in charge.

Surviving are his wife, Alexandra Allison Burnell; sons, Douglas Burnell of Prosperity and Ronald A. Burnell of Islip, N.Y.; daughter, Barbara Coleman of Manteno, IL; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Ray Carlton Eaddy Sr.

KINGSTREE — Ray Carlton Eaddy, 61, died Friday, April 22, 2005, at his residence after an illness.

Mr. Eaddy was born October 25, 1943, in Kingstree, a son of the late Lloyd and Altha Douglas Eaddy. He was a graduate of Indiantown High School and served in the U.S. Army Military Police in Korea. Mr. Eaddy retired after 18 years in law enforcement and was the owner of Ray’s Flag Car Co. He was a member of Bethesda United Methodist Church and the White Oak Hunting Club. Mr. Eaddy was an outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Surviving: his wife, Madge Springs Eaddy; 2 sons, Ray C. Eaddy, Jr. and Rudy Tisdale, II, both of Kingstree; 3 sisters, Mildred Huggins of Hemingway, Lottie Reardon of Kingstree and Wendy Hardy of Salters; 1 brother, Douglas Eaddy of Kingstree; 6 grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at the Williamsburg Funeral Home Chapel, with burial in Kingstree Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Marie Ackerman

WALTERBORO — Marie Elizabeth Spell Ackerman, widow of Stephen W. Ackerman, died on Friday afternoon at the Methodist Oaks in Orangeburg. She was 105 years old, having been born in the Edisto community of Colleton County on March 20, 1900.

Mrs. Ackerman was the first child of Martha Washington Hucks and Paul Eldred Spell. She was educated in the public schools of Cottageville and Branchville and graduated from the old Carlisle School in Bamberg, which was then operated by the United Methodist Church.

She was a teacher and a homemaker, a creative person of many talents. With no musical training she could play the violin, piano and guitar. She was especially interested in arts and crafts, having made several complete nativity scenes which she used in the church and home at Christmas. It was her delight to open her home for parties where she displayed all of her collections and antiques for the enjoyment of her friends and family.

Mrs. Ackerman lived in Summerville, Andrews, and Walterboro, following her husband’s work; in each place she was active in her church, community, garden club, and Eastern Star. She was also a lifelong member of Green Pond United Methodist Church. When she moved to the Methodist Oaks in 1989, she immediately set about learning the names of the other residents and rekindled many friendships from her earlier days.

She is survived by one daughter, Edith Taylor of Columbia; two grandchildren, Martha Taylor Coleman (Joe) of Lenoir, North Carolina, and Stephen Edward Taylor (Brenda) of Lugoff, South Carolina; three great-grandchildren, Kelly Coleman Melton (Rick) and Jody Coleman (Helen), both of Lenoir, and Michelle Gardner (Jason) of Lugoff; and three great-great-grandchildren, Thomas and Elizabeth Melton of Lenoir, and Cameron Gardner of Lugoff. She is also survived by one sister, Annie Martha Hills and one brother, Paul Spell (Elizabeth), both of the Methodist Oaks; and a special cousin, Ruth Steedly, also of the Methodist Oaks; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at the Stringer Chapel, Methodist Oaks, at 2 Sunday, April 24, 2005. Interment will be in the family cemetery near Smoaks. Pallbearers will be nephews, Paul Spell, Jr., Everett Spell, Eldred Spell, Bill Godbold, Greg Wiggins, Danny Inabinet.

Memorials may be made to the Methodist Oaks, P.O. Box 9005, Orangeburg 29116. Parker-Rhoden Funeral Home, 117 Paul Street in Walterboro, is in charge of arrangements.

Pauline Deneal

COLUMBIA — Services for Mother Pauline Deneal, 82, will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Bibleway Church of Atlas Road, with Pastor Darrell Jackson officiating and burial to follow in Crescent Hill Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends this evening at #19 Guernsey Drive. Leevy’s Funeral Home, Taylor Street Chapel, is in charge.

Mother Pauline Deneal was predeceased by her husband, Bishop Donnie C. Deneal and two children, Robert Deneal and Gladys Tillman. Surviving are two daughters, Paulette (Clarence) Smith, Loretta Deneal; five sons, Arthur (Hermine) Deneal, Donnie Deneal, Jr. Paul (Veronica) Deneal, James Deneal and Dwight Deneal; a nephew, Belton Knox.

Sophia S. Lambert

KINGSTREE — Sophia Skvarek Lambert, 62, died Wednesday, April 20, in a Columbia hospital.

Mrs. Lambert was born November 21, 1942, in Greeleyville, SC, a daughter of John and Victoria Ard Skvarek. She received her education in the Greeleyville schools and was a retired bookkeeper. Mrs. Lambert was a member of Sandy Bay Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Survivors: 1 daughter, Felicia Lambert of Columbia, SC; 2 brothers, Joe Skvarek and Albert Skvarek, both of Kingstree.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday at Sandy Bay Pentecostal Holiness Church, with burial to follow in Kingstree Memorial Gardens. The family received visitors from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Friday at Williamsburg Funeral Home.

Arthur Keels

BLYTHEWOOD — Service for Arthur Hall Keels, 77, will be held Sunday at 3 p.m at North Trenholm Baptist Church with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to the church. Visitation will be Saturday 6-8 p.m at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel.

Mr. Keels died Thursday, April 21, 2005. Born in Columbia, he was a son of the late John Daniel Keels, Sr. and Leola Hall Keels. A Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict, he received a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering from the University of South Carolina. He was a registered Civil Engineer and land survey and owner of Keels Engineering.

Mr. Keels was an active member of North Trenholm Baptist Church and served as a deacon. He held tightly to his strong Christian faith, always looking for a way to share his love for our Lord Jesus Christ. He found great strength in reading daily from his favorite Bibles.

Always the optimist, he never met a challenge that was too big to take on. In his free time he enjoyed walking in the woods, admiring God’s creations and feeding all the animals that he cared for. Additionaly, he loved nurturing and growing many plants including orchids, blueberries, grapevines and pecan trees.

Surviving are his wife, Mariel Shanks Keels of Columbia; children, Janie Keels Marsh of Columbia, Frances Keels Ashley of Charlotte, N.C., Patricia Keels Venable of Seattle, Wash. and Rodger Shanks Keels of Columbia; brothers, John D. Keels, Jr. and Stanford J. Keels, both of Columbia; seven grandchildren.

Dale E. Burkett

BATESBURG-LEESVILLE — Services for Dale E. Burkett, 46, will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Sunday from Leesville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dan Bradley officiating. Burial will follow in Ridge Crest Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday at Barr-Price Funeral Home Historic B-L Chapel. Memorials may be made to Leesville United Methodist Church, 510 East Columbia Avenue, B-L, SC 29070.

Mr. Burkett died Thursday, April 21, 2005. Born in Richland County a son of the late Joyce Ann Merritt and Felder Burkett, Jr. He was a member of Leesville UMC where he was organist and Choir Director, assistant Choral Director at B-L High School and was a former Director of the Ridge Choral Society.

Surviving is a brother, Wally Burkett of Batesburg-Leesville.

He was predeceased by a sister, Cindy Burkett.

Keith McKelvey

RIDGEWAY — Funeral services for Keith Allen McKelvey, 49, will be held Saturday, April 23, 2005, at 11 a.m. at Mitchell’s Grove United Methodist Church in High Point, N.C. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Born in Guilford County, N.C., to Charles C. McKelvey and Iris Murr McKelvey, he died April 19, 2005. Survivors include his mother, brothers and sister-in-law, Roger and Julie McKelvey of Columbia, and Randy McKelvey of Greensboro, N.C. Also, several nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to Ridgeway Health & Rehab in Ridgeway, S.C.
