Rosalyn Mitchell

SULLIVAN’S ISLAND — Rosalyn “Rose” Hazlehurst Mitchell, age 60, of Sullivan’s Island, S.C., died Thursday in Columbia, S.C., following an automobile accident. The friends and relatives of Rose Mitchell are invited to attend her funeral service at the Circular Congregational Church, 150 Meeting Street in Charleston, S.C., on Saturday, April 23, 2005, at 4 o’clock. A reception with the family will be held immediately following the service at the church. Interment will be on Sunday, April 24, 2005 at 3:30 p.m. in Shadowlawn Cemetery, 201 Bacon Street, LaGrange, Georgia. The family will be receiving friends at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 207 North Greenwood Street, LaGrange, Georgia. Arrangements By J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Mount Pleasant Chapel.

Ms. Mitchell was born October 6, 1944, the daughter of Marie Hammond Mitchell and the late Dr. John Thornton Mitchell of LaGrange, Georgia. She held a Bachelor of Arts degree from Queen’s College in Charlotte, N.C., a Masters in Social Work from the University of South Carolina, and an M.A.T. in Early Education from the College of Charleston. Her professional career included serving as a 7th grade language arts instructor at the Springfield Elementary School, Springfield, N.C., as medical social worker in the Department of Psychiatry at MUSC, as owner and operator of Carolina Clocks of Sullivan’s Island, a ceramics business, as a social worker at Oak Grove Children’s Home in Charleston, as an art instructor at The Creative Spark Center for the Arts in Mt. Pleasant, as a graduate level instructor of teachers and education administrators at The Citadel, as a ceramics instructor for gifted students in the Charleston County School System, as a first grade teacher, kindergarten teacher, and reading recovery teacher at the Ivenia Brown Elementary School in Green Pond, S.C., and at Ron McNair Elementary School in Charleston, as a reading coach for the Charleston County School System, and, most recently, as a literacy coach at Allendale Elementary School where she provided professional development for implementation of best practices in the teaching of reading to approximately 40 elementary teachers and their administrators from four local elementary schools. She was an artist, writer, bicyclist, carpenter, boat builder, marathon runner, trained storyteller, avid reader, bird watcher, environmentalist, and inveterate writer of letters-to-the-editor regarding education, the environment and politics.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. William Bufkin “Buff” Ross of Charleston, S.C., a grandson, William Davenport “Jack” Ross of Charleston, S.C., her mother, Marie Hammond Mitchell of LaGrange, Georgia, two sisters, Marie Hammond Mitchell of Boulder, Colorado, and Martha Ann Mitchell of Columbia, S.C., by family member, Dr. William A. Ross of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., and by numerous other family members and close friends in South Carolina, around the country and the world. Ms. Mitchell was preceded in death by her brother, John T. Mitchell.

Sue Bullock

SUMTER — Sue Stokley “Kitty Sue” Harvin Bullock, wife of the late John Paul Bullock, passed away Thursday, April 21, 2005, in Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Bullock was born on Thursday, November 10, 1921, in Manning, S.C., the daughter of the late Lucius Herman Harvin and Louisa Katharine Susong Harvin. She was a graduate of Manning High School and a 1942 graduate of Queens College, with a B.A. Degree in History and English. She married the late John Paul Bullock on August 14, 1945. She taught in the public schools of Kershaw, Clarendon and Sumter Counties, and at Wilson Hall School from 1971-1988, where she served as the chair of the History and English Departments. She was a legend among teachers and was loved by generations of students. She was a sustaining member of the Sumter Junior Welfare League, a member of the Sumter Garden Club, Sunset Country Club, Cotillion Club, Sumter Art Association, The Book Club, the Furman University Parents’ Council, and was very instrumental in the founding of Bullock Funeral Home. Mrs. Bullock was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where she served as a Deacon, and was the former moderator of The Presbyterian Women.

Mrs. Bullock is survived by three sons, John Paul Bullock, Jr., M.D. and his wife, Elizabeth “Betsy” Daniel Bullock of Richmond, VA, Lucius Harvin Bullock and his wife, Cynthia Moran Bullock of Sumter, and Alexander McMillan Bullock of Washington , D.C.; one granddaughter, Elizabeth Katharine Bullock of Richmond, VA; and three grandsons, John Paul Bullock, III of Los Angeles, CA, Robert Harris Daniel Bullock of Richmond, VA, and Lucius Harvin Bullock, Jr. of Columbia, S.C.

Special thanks to her loving caretakers and friends, Bertha Kelly, Martha Spann, Shirley Williams, Mae Willis, and to Dr. Phil Brandt and the Staff Members of 5 Medical South at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, George Susong Harvin, Lucius Herman Harvin, Jr., and John Rowland Harvin, M.D.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 25, 2005, at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Michael McGee, Rev. Malcolm Bullock, and Dr. Zane Moore officiating. Entombment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery Mausoleum.

Pallbearers will be Joseph Barnwell Harvin, Lucius Scott Harvin, George M. Harvin, Christopher M. Harvin, Lucian B. McCutchen, and Lucius Herman Harvin IV.

The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Sunday, April 24, 2005, at Bullock Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

Memorials may be made to Wilson Hall School, 2801 Wise Drive, Sumter, SC 29150 or First Presbyterian Church, 9 W. Calhoun St., Sumter, SC 29150.

The family has chosen Bullock Funeral Home for the arrangements.

Valentine Robinson

COLUMBIA — Funeral Services for Valentine Timothy Robinson, Jr., 70, of 541 Romford Road, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 26, 2005 at New Ebenezer Baptist Church, 1236 Gregg St., Columbia, S.C. The body will lie in state at 10:00 a.m. in the church. Visitation with the family will be Monday, April 25, 2005, from 5:00-6:00 p.m. at Robinson & Son Funeral Home, 5212 Farrow Rd. Interment will be in Robinson Memorial Gardens, 555 Farrow Rd., Columbia, S.C.

Mr. Robinson died April 21, 2005. He was the Owner and Manager of Robinson & Son Funeral Home.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Eunice Weathers Robinson; 3 daughters: Ovetta (John) Robinson-Heyward, Regina Robinson-Dunbar, both of Cola., S.C. and Cynthia A. Spigner of Seabrook, MD; 1 son, Jonathan (Pamela) Anderson of Greenbelt, MD; 5 sisters, Louise D. Cotton of Sumter, S.C., Ida D. Wright of Pinewood, S.C., Odessa D. Williams and Inez R. Mobley Dash, both of Trenton, N.J. and Beatrice R. Gillespie of Satellite, Fla.; 2 brothers, Woodrow Drayton of Hopkins, S.C., John (Jean) Drayton of Baltimore, MD. and 1 foster brother, Napoleon (Margaret) McFall of Cola., S.C.; 4 grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

Celeste Anne Berger

COLUMBIA — Memorial Mass for Celeste Anne Berger, 54, will be celebrated Tuesday, April 26, 2005, at 1 p.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Visitation will be Monday 6-8 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel.

Mrs. Berger, wife of the late Bruce Jeffrey Berger, died Saturday, April 23, 2005. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she was the daughter of Anne Theresa Marinacci and the late Francis Leonard Marinacci. She was a graduate of John Adams High School and Catherine Gibbs Secretarial School in New York City, where she worked as an executive secretary at various law firms. Upon her move to Columbia fourteen years ago, she worked for the law firm of Finkel & Altman as a receptionist. For the past six years, she was employed as an administrative assistant in the Imaging Department at South Carolina Oncology Associates aiding patients with cancer.

A loving wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend, she is survived by her son Michael James Berger of Columbia; daughter, Janice A. Berger McPherson and her husband, Matthew, of Columbia; her mother of Queens, N.Y.; brother, James Francis Marinacci, his wife, Maria and his daughter, Jacqueline of Oyster Bay, N.Y.; and sister-in-law, Edna Berger Kornberg and her husband, Stephen, of Irvington, N.Y.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to South Carolina Oncology Associates, P.O. Box 2046, West Columbia, S.C. 29171 or Palmetto Health Hospice Foundation, 1400 Pickens Street, Columbia, S.C. 29201.

The family wishes to thank Mrs. Berger’s co-workers at South Carolina Oncology Associates and her many friends for their love and support during this time.

Kay Frances (Boswell) Best

PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — Kay Frances (Boswell) Best, 68, a retired IBM Manager, died peacefully at Calvert Memorial Hospital in Prince Frederick, MD on April 16th. Ms. Best recently moved to Maryland from Columbia, SC to be with her family. Ms. Best a SC native and longtime resident of Columbia was born on February 6th, 1937. Ms. Best attended grade school at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, and graduated from Ursuline High School, known today as Cardinal-Newman High School, in 1954. Ms. Best moved to New York City to enter a career in modeling, joining the John Robert Powers Modeling Agency, and later appeared on the covers of Teen, Modern and Life Magazines. Ms. Best expanded her aspirations and had appearances on TV in Revlon commercials, Eddie Fisher’s “Coke Time” and The Ray Bolger Show. Ms. Best danced briefly with Radio City Music Hall’s Corps de Ballet, before returning to SC in late 1955 to start a family. Ms. Best owned and operated several dance schools throughout SC until 1964 when she moved to Staatsburg, NY. Ms. Best worked briefly as a telephone operator and was later hired by the IBM Corporation in Poughkeepsie, NY as an assembly line worker in 1969. Ms. Best quickly moved up the ranks and held the positions of Secretarial Pool Manager, Sales Representative for the Office Products Division and retired in 1992 as Manager of Management Development in White Plains, NY. Ms. Best continued working after retirement as a certified instructor, teaching professionals core business skills as part of the Genie Z. Laborde, PH.D., “Influencing with Integrity” business seminars program.

Survivors include two sons, John Thompson of El Cajon, CA and Charles Thompson of Huntingtown, MD; three brothers, Charles Richard Boswell of Columbia, SC, Chris Boswell of Columbia, SC and William (Stan) Boswell of Winter Haven, FL; one sister, Mary John Boswell of Charlotte, NC; six grandchildren and one great grandchild. A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Peter's Catholic Church on Assembly Street in Columbia, SC on May 14th at 1:30 pm with a reception following at Murphy Hall, adjacent to the church.

The family would particularly like to thank Dr. Leland “Joe” McElveen, Kim Dewitt, and all other staff at SC Oncology Associates for their loving care and support. Memorials can be made to the following organization;

Sara Jo Loupo Carmichael

LAKEVIEW — Mrs. Sara Jo L. Carmichael, 78, died Friday, April 22, 2005 in the Loris Community Hospital after an illness.

Funeral services are scheduled for 3:30 PM, Sunday April 24, 2005 at the First Baptist Church of Lake View, burial will follow in the Lake View Perpetual Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home of Mrs. Carmichael’s niece, Kathy Smith at 308 S. Main Street in Lake View from 6-8 PM Saturday April 23, 2005 directed by Cook Funeral Home of Lake View.

Mrs. Carmichael, the wife of A.E. “Gene” Carmichael was born in Hamlet, NC. The daughter of the late Edward Loupo and Naomi Wilson Loupo. Mrs. Carmichael graduated from Lake View High School and Winthrop College. She was a member and a trustee of First Baptist Church of Lake View. Surviving are her husband A.E. “Gene” Carmichael of Lake View, SC and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, J.E. Loupo, Robert E. Loupo and M. Wilson Loupo.

A. Rupert Collins, Jr.

LUMBERTON, N.C. — Services for A. Rupert Collins, Jr., 73, are 3 p.m. today at First Baptist Church; burial in Meadowbrook Cemetery. Floyd Mortuary & Crematory, Lumberton, is in charge. Born in Mullins, S.C. to A. Rupert Sr. and Emily Collins, he died April 22, 2005. He had retired as a principle. Surviving: daughters, Libbey Inabnit, Kerry Floyd, Mary Dean; siblings, John, David, Daniel, Dixie, Alice; 4 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild.

Loreese Kimpson

SWANSEA — The funeral service for Mrs. Loreese G. Kimpson, of 430 Golson Dr., Swansea will be held 2:00 p.m. Monday, April 25, 2005 at Maloney Baptist Church near North with the Rev. Michael Knight officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Kimpson died Thursday, April 21, 2005.

She was a daughter of Mrs. Helen Felder Golson and the late Charles Golson, Sr.

Survivors include her children: Mrs. Gloria K. Jones of Columbia, Ms. Patricia Kimpson of Swansea and Mark (Merril) Kimpson of Brooklyn, NY; her mother of Swansea; two sisters, Mrs. Dorothy (Harold) Shivers and Mrs. Margaret (Eugene) Seawright, both of Swansea; and 10 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

Viewing will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, April 24, at W.B. Crumel Funeral Home of North.

Friends may call at the residence at the funeral home.

Kathryn Childress

COLUMBIA — Kathryn Hinson Childress, formerly of Columbia, South Carolina, and widow of Kenneth C. Childress, died April 23, 2005 in East Cooper Hospital after an extended illness. She was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, on August 25, 1912, daughter of Ulysses Spencer Hinson and Bessie White Hinson. She had one brother, Spencer James Hinson, deceased.

Mrs. Childress was a member of First Baptist Church in Columbia, South Carolina for over sixty years. She and her husband were instrumental in the formation of Garden City Chapel and Retreat, Garden City, South Carolina, where her husband was a permanent trustee before his death. Her Christian modesty and selfless generosity greatly influenced her children, grandchildren, and all who knew her.

Mrs. Childress was a founding member of the Thursday Morning Book Club and the Gardenia Garden Club in Columbia. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, lately of the Rebecca Motte Chapter; The National Society of the Daughters of the American Colonists, 1607 to 1776; The National Society Colonial Dames XVII Century; The United Daughters of the Confederacy. In each club or society she held offices.

Survivors include three daughters: Kathryn Childress Lancaster of Charleston, Celia Childress Rembert of Wadmalaw Island, and Helen Childress Sander of Charleston; their spouses; and eight grandchildren, all of Charleston and Mount Pleasant: Lisa Lancaster Frampton, Julie Lancaster Weinheimer, and Gregory Walter Lancaster; Jonathan Jacob Halford, Blair Kenneth Halford, and Spencer Jaudon Halford; Todd Rutledge Sander and Kathryn Sander Elliott. Mrs. Childress also had eight great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Garden City Chapel and Retreat, 316 North Dogwood Drive, Garden City Beach, South Carolina 29576. Arrangements by Palmetto Cremation Society.

Minnie Cooke Cline

COLUMBIA — Mrs. Minnie Cooke Cline, 85, died Wednesday, April 20, 2005 at Atria Assisted Living in Columbia, SC. Formerly of Glen Alpine, she was the daughter of the late Julius Pinkney Cooke and Sophronia Anna York Cooke.

She was a homemaker and a longtime member of Mount Home Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jink Cline, sisters, Bertie Cooke Kiser, Ruth Cooke Brittain and Ann Rocket; brother Otis Cooke.

She is survived by son, Jeff Cline of Pattaya, Thailand, daughter, Suellen Snyder of Columbia, SC; brother, Todd Cook of Charlotte; sister, Pearl “Cookie” Mundy of Lutz, FL; 4 grandchildren.

The funeral will be 2:00 P.M. Monday, April 25th at Mount Home Baptist Church with Reverends Jerry Gamble and David Orders presiding. Interment will follow the service at Burke Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service.
