Donald Adams
TAYLORS — Donald Daniel Adams, 74, husband of Ann Vargas Adams, of 207 Mountain Crest Drive, Taylors, formerly of Charlotte, N.C., died Sunday, April 24, 2005 at St. Francis Hospital, downtown.
Born in Union, S.C., Mr. Adams was a son of the late Ernest and Ethel Johns Adams. He retired as Division Manager with UPS after 32 years. He volunteered at Allen Bennett Hospital and was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.
Mr. Adams served in the U.S. Army and then the U.S. Navy, where he was a deep-sea diver. He served in the Korean War and World War II.
Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Donna Patterson and Marguerite Quaranto and her husband, Mario; grandchildren, Eran Patterson, Natalie and Angela Quaranto; two sisters, Athlee Lomas and Doris Raines Mitchell; and two brothers, Ernest Adams, Jr. and William Adams.
Mr. Adams was preceded in death by two brothers, Ralph and Roger Adams.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, April 27, 2005, at 3 P.M. at the chapel of Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown. Visitation will be prior to the service from 1:30 P.M. until 2:50 P.M. Burial will follow the service in Woodlawn Memorial Park.
The family is at the residence.
Dorothy Calcutt
SUMTER — Dorothy Allsbrook Calcutt, 90, widow of Hilton Calcutt, died Tuesday, April 26, 2005, in Lexington Medical Center in West Columbia.
Born in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late James Edward Allsbrook and the late Martha Eula Gardner Allsbrook.
Mrs. Calcutt was formerly employed by Charm House.
Surviving are a daughter, Jo Ann Douglas DuBose and husband Oscar of Gilbert; four grandchildren, Lynn DuBose Eaton, Frank DuBose, Alan DuBose, and Michael DuBose; and 6 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with Rev. Tommy Atkinson officiating.
The family will receive friends following the graveside service.

HOLLY HILL — Mrs. Margie Merritt Bilton, 82, of 924 Depot Road, Holly Hill, died Monday, April 25, 2005, in The Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Holly Hill United Methodist Church with Rev. Jerry Phillips officiating. Burial will follow in the Eutawville Cemetery.
The casket will be placed in the church at 10 a.m.
Pallbearers will be Melvin Kemmerlin, Jim Jeffers, Don Bilton, Donnie Boyd, Gene Bilton and Larry Bilton.
Mrs. Bilton was born in Augusta, Ga., a daughter of the late Rev. John B. Merritt and Mamie Beatrice Garner Merritt. She retired as a bookkeeper from Boyd Furniture and was a member of Holly Hill United Methodist Church. She was the widow of J.D. Bilton. She was preceded in death by daughters, Janet B. Metts and Barbara B. Parler and son, John Denver “Bubba” Bilton.
Surviving are daughters, Billie B. Boyd and Cynthia Cox, both of Holly Hill; son-in-law, Gene Boyd of Holly Hill; sister, Edna Sikes of Augusta; grandchildren, Sonny and Kelly Metts, DeDe and Pedie Bolt, Sandy and Randy Brown, Laura and Stan Vause, Aprile and Michael Chapman, Russ Boyd, Jeni Barbero and Candace Baker; 12 great-grandchildren.

HARTSTVILLE — Funeral services for Charlotte Ilene Walters, 58, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 28, 2005, at Eastside Holiness Church. The Revs. Hazel Mixon, Gary Edenfield and Steve Winburn will officiate with burial in Magnolia Cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Rev. Walters died Monday, April 25, 2005. Born in Hartsville, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Heustess and Bernice Morgan Walters. She was a member of Eastside Holiness Church where she served as pastor for 39 years. She was the founder and administrator of Eastside Christian Academy and was a volunteer chaplain at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center. Many words could be spoken of our loved one, but her life exemplified her greatest love; serving God. She was one that reached out to all mankind to lend a helping hand. She was a shepherd after God’s own heart. Her childlike spirit was demonstrated to all the children at the school. She will be greatly missed by all.
Surviving are her sisters and brother-in-law, Cora Lee and Jimmy Dial, Elaine Futrell, Marlene McDonald, Dot Leviner, all of Hartsville, S.C.; nephews and nieces, Frankie Futrell, Lee Futrell, Crystal Dial-Wilson, Kelly Jenkins, Michael O’Neal, Dawn Arrants; faithful friends; Rev. Asa Griffin
ABBEVILLE — Asa Reginald Griffin, Sr., 84, resident of 149 Hwy. 72 East, widower of Erline Grant Griffin, died quietly Monday April 25, 2005, in Abbeville Nursing Home.
Born Nov. 5, 1920, in Newberry, S.C., he was a son of the late Asa Benjamin and Lucille Dickert Griffin.
Mr. Griffin was a World War II Army veteran. After his completion of service, he became employed with Abbeville Mills from which he retired in 1986 with over 40 years of service. Upon retirement he worked for a number of years in the used car business. He was a very active member of Grace United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Harry Powell Men’s Sunday School Class and was the superintendent of Sunday Schools for many years.
Mr. Griffin also enjoyed a sporting career in baseball as he was a sucessful player in the Old Greenwood Textile League. Upon conclusion of his playing days, he took the the one thing he loved most - coaching. He was a charter member of the Abbeville Youth Athletics Association. He coached Abbeville Youth Baseball Teams for 43 years and his first team, the Cubs, won the league championship 13 out of 16 years. He also coached many Allstar teams during his career. He also coached the Abbeville Midgets Football Team to a State Championship in the 1980s.
He was referred to affectionately as “Coach” by many of his former players, some of whom went on to sucessful careers in college baseball.
Coach Griffin was an avid Abbeville High School Football fan. One thing he was most proud of was the fact that, until his recent illness this past football season, he attended every Abbeville High game both at home and away for 57 years and 9 games. In all he did not miss a game for over 600 games. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather to his many grandchildren of whom he was so fond. Coach Griffin will be missed, but God needed a “Coach” and now He has one of the best.
Survivors are: 2 sons, Reggie Griffin and his wife Dot of Abbeville, SC, Mike Griffin and his wife Carlene of Abbeville; 7 grandchildren, Gina Webb, Chris Griffin, Ben Griffin, John Griffin, Missy Purdy, Carrie Brock and Clif Griffin; 12 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, April 28, 2005, at 11 from Grace United Methodist Church with the Rev. Darren Hook officiating. The burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
The body is at The Chandler-Jackson Funeral Home where the family will recieve friends from 6 until 7:30 p.m. Wednesday evening. The family is at the hme of his son Mr. and Mrs. Reggie Griffin, 610 Noble Drive Abbeville, SC.
Active pallbearers will be Scott Webb, Mark Purdy, Ben Griffin, Melvin Brock, Clif Griffin, John Griffin and Chris Griffin.

CHESTER — Services for Lois Ferguson Helms, 88, retired from Chester County Hospital, widow of Floyd Helms, are 2 p.m. (visitation 1-2 p.m.) today at Barron Funeral Home, burial in Chester Memorial Gardens. Born in Winnsboro to Julius and Eliza Pope Ferguson, she died April 25, 2005. Surviving are her siblings, Frank Ferguson, Lucille Davis; grandson, Terry McWaters; several nieces and nephews.
Moses Montgomery
COLUMBIA — Services for Mr. Moses Montgomery, 50, of 2733 River Drive, will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Brookland Baptist Church, with burial in Palmetto Cemetery. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. today at Palmer Memorial Chapel.
Mr. Montgomery died Thursday, April 21, 2005. Born in Gable, S.C., he was the son of the late Jackson Andrew and Bertha Lee Chestnut Montgmery. He was the first African-American computer science graduate from the University of South Carolina. He went on to become a computer systems analyst for several major corporations and the U.S. Department of Defense.
Surviving are his wife, Reverend Dr. Mary Myers-Montgomery; brothers, Daniel, Raymond, Roman and Milton Montgomery; sisters, Mary M. Washington , Catherine Cogar, Corinthian Jane Montgomery, Ethel Lee Montgomery and Patricia Montgomery.
Fred Wells Jr.
SUMTER — Fredrick “Fred” E. Wells, Jr., 86, husband of Evelyn A. Wells, died Sunday, April 24, 2005, in Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born in Coronaco, South Carolina, he was a son of the late Fredrick E. Wells, Sr. and the late Clara Pinson Wells.
Mr. Wells was twice married, first to the late Mary Rayle Wells and later to Evelyn Avin Wells.
Mr. Wells was a charter member of Alice Drive Baptist Church and later rejoined First Baptist Church. He graduated from Clemson University in 1940 and received a Master’s degree from the University of South Carolina in 1952. He was a Lt. Colonel in the U.S. Army and served in World War II and retired from the United States Army Reserves after 20 years of service. He was the Business Manager and Deputy Superintendent of Sumter School District #17 having retired in 1978. He was a member of the Road’s End Club, past President and former member of the Sumter Rotary Club, charter member of the Cooper River Fishing Club, member of the Millwood Club, member of the American Legion Post #15, former President of the S.C. Airstream Association and was active in many civic organizations.
Surviving are his wife of Sumter; three daughters, Patricia W. Lassiter and husband William of Newport News, Va., Rosemary W. Drakeford and husband Meredith (Drak) of Sumter, and Rebecca W. Faile of Darlington; two sisters, Roberta W. Timmerman of Estero, Fla. and Annie Lee W. Daniels of Greenwood; stepchildren, Norma L. Davis and husband William of Greenville, Rhea L. Rowe and husband George of Townville, S.C., Charlie R. Compton and wife Angie of North Augusta, S.C., J. W. Lloyd, Jr. and wife Casey of Moreno Valley, California; grandchildren, Fredrick Scott Lassiter, Suzanne L. Culotta, Clyatt D. Brady, Morgan E. Drakeford, Robert E. Faile, Mitchell Faile and Paul Faile;, stepgrandchildren, Melissa A. Halyckyj, Julie A. Wells, Will Davis, Lisa D. O’Bradovich, Stephanie Davis, Sandy B.
