Opal Morrell

HARTSVILLE — Graveside services for Opal Lee Carroll Morrell, 81, will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 27, 2005, in Magnolia Cemetery. The Rev. Dr. Richard Bailey will officiate and Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is in charge. The family will receive friends Tuesday, April 26, 2005 from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mrs. Morrell, widow of W. C. Morrell, died Monday, April 25, 2005. Born in Darlington County, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Lawson and Nita Truett Carroll. She was a member of the First Church of God Reformation and had retired from Mar-Mac Mfg. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother and devoted Christian.

Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Warren and Jeanette Morrell of Hartsville, S.C.; daughters and sons-in-law, Diane and John Fedorchuk, Sonja and Royace Moody of Hartsville, S.C.; grandchildren, Chris Moody, Timmy Moody, Sandy Moody, Johnny Fedorchuk, Dangie Fedorchuk, Susie Sportiello, Kendra Braddock, Karen Atkinson, Rachel Parks, Rebecca Davis; 18 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Norenia Dixon and Mary Speight; brother, John Carroll; grandchild, Warren Clifton Morrell, II.

Elsie Strauss Stone

COLUMBIA — Service for Elsie Strauss Stone, 76, will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Trenholm Road United Methodist Church with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Serving as active pallbearers will be Perry Crosthwaite, Bill Allen, Dr. Christopher L. Andrews, Rusty Goudelock, Cason Cook and Ray Derrick. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Thomas C. Hoffman and Dennis L. Dabney, CPA. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Trenholm Road United Methodist Church. Visitation will be Tuesday 6-8 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel.

Mrs. Stone died Sunday, April 24, 2005. Born in Newberry, she was a daughter of the late Joseph Lee Boozer, Sr. and Rhoda Ruff Boozer. A graduate of Newberry College, she loved gardening, cooking and shopping. A sports enthusiast, she was an avid Gamecock fan and followed youth baseball for over forty years.

Mrs. Stone was a member of Trenholm Road United Methodist Church.

Surviving are her husband, Sam O. Stone; sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Charles W. and LeeAnne Strauss of Columbia, Richard A. and Terri Strauss of Columbia and Robert D. and Cheryl Strauss of Wilmington, Del.; sister, Frances Stutts of Columbia; sister-in-law, Jackie Mayer and her husband, Fred, of San Rafael, Calif.; and grandchildren, Andrew, Jonathan, Justin, William, Olivia, Emily and Lena. She was predeceased by her first husband, Werner Strauss.

Loreen Powell

COLUMBIA — Loreen Perry Powell, 101, passed away Monday, April 25, 2005, in Sunset Beach, N.C. She was the widow of the late Larnie Henry Powell of Columbia. Born in Mossydale Community in Fairfield County, she was a daughter of the late George Robertson Perry and Maggie Bell Sherrill Perry. She was a charter member of St. John United Methodist Church, Columbia, S.C. and an active member of the United Methodist Women. She was a former employee of Belk of Columbia.

Mrs. Powell is survivied by children, Perry R. Powell of Chapin, S.C. and Jacquelyn P. Scheffler of Sunset Beach; sister, Marjorie P. Lewis of Winnsboro, S.C.; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Wednesday 1:30-2:30 p.m. prior to the funeral service at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, at 2:30 p.m. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park

Memorials may be made to St. John United Methodist Church, 1700 Houston St., Columbia, S.C. 29203.

Lt. Col. Henry Cronic

CLINTON — Lt. Col. Henry Cronic (Ret.), 82, of 500 Cedar St., died Monday, April 25, 2005, in Anderson Area Medical Center after complications from pneumonia. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. tonight at Gray Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Good Shepard Clinic, 245 Human Services Road, Clinton, SC 29325, Piedmont Technical College, P.O. Box 1467, Greenwood, SC 29648, Clinton Animal Hospital, 404 Willard Road, Clinton, SC 29325 or Presbyterian College Faculty Development, 503 S. Broad St., Clinton, SC 29325.

Ernest Lee

COLUMBIA — Mr. Ernest “Carl” Presley Lee, Jr., 63 of Columbia, died Sunday, April 24, 2005. Mr. Lee was born in Columbia, S.C., to the late Ernest Pressley and Mildred Dinkins Lee.

Survivors include his brothers, Robert Lee, Steve Lee Sr., and Donnie Lee; his sisters, Shirley Hobby and Debra Burton all of Columbia. Mr. Lee was preceded in death by his sister, Betty Lee. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

The funeral service for Mr. Lee will be held 4 o’clock Wednesday, April 27, 2005, at Spring Valley Pentecostal Church with The Reverend Steve Lewis officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Mike Lee, Michael Craig Lee, Charles Lee, Timothy Lee, Scott Desfocher, and Travis Lucas. Honorary pallbearers will be Danny Gunter, Willie Long and J.L. Lee. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 o’clock this (Tuesday) evening at Shives Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Spring Valley Pentecostal Church, 107 Rosebury Lane, Columbia, SC 29223.

BLACKVILLE — Services for Benjamin “Ben” Reed, 88, son of Joseph and Lucille Reed 3 p.m. today at Macedonia Baptist Church. Burial: Hope Memorial Park, Barnwell. Washington ’s Funeral Home, Hampton, is in charge. Surviving: wife, Johnell; children, Joe Reed, Jenell Jenkins; grandchildren, Omaris Hendrix (reared in the home), Curtis, Donavan, Kelvin, Christopher, Regina Reed, Nicole Jenkins; sister, Rosa White; more.

Lois Helms

CHESTER — Services for Lois Ferguson Helms, 88, retired from Chester County Hospital, widow of Floyd Helms, 2 p.m. Wednesday (visitation 6-8 tonight) at Barron Funeral Home. Burial: Chester Memorial Gardens. Born in Winnsboro to Julius and Eliza Pope Ferguson, she died April 25, 2005. Surviving: siblings, Frank Ferguson, Lucille Davis; grandson, Terry McWaters; nieces and nephews.

Samuel Johnson

COLUMBIA — Services for Samuel Jerome Johnson, of 1503 Caroline Road, will be held Thursday, April 28, 2005, at 2 p.m. at St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church with burial in Palmetto Cemetery.

Samuel Jerome Johnson, affectionately known as “Sunny Boy,” was born on February 11, 1936, to the late Francis James and Matilda Dorothy Johnson in Columbia, S.C. He departed this earthly life and entered into the arms of Jesus on Saturday, April 23, 2005, at his home.

He was preceded in death by his wife, the late Mary Elaine Johnson, one sister, Dorothy Elizabeth Johnson, and one brother-in-law, Thomas C. Harrison Sr.

Sunny achieved his education at Blessed Martin de Porres, which is now St. Martin de Porres, Elementary School, Immaculate Conception (I.C.S.) High School in Charleston, S.C., and Booker T. Washington High School in Columbia, S.C. (B.T.W. Class of 54).

Sunny was a member of the Washington ian Editorial Staff, where he served a Assistant Editor. He was a member of the Booker T. Washington High School Senior Honor Society Celia Dial Saxon Chapter, where he also served as treasurer.

Sunny attended Xavier University of Louisiana in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Sunny served in the United States Navy on the aircraft carrier USS Princeton out of San Diego, California. He retired from the United States Navy in 1956.

His military awards include the National Defense Service Medal and the China Service Medal, which he earned during the Formosa Crisis.

Sunny joined the St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church in the 5th grade in 1946, where he served until his health failed him.

Sunny leaves to cherish his memories one sister, Mary Frances Harrison of Columbia, S.C.; one brother, Odell Leroy Johnson of Frederick, MD; one sister-in-law, Annabelle Johnson of Frederick, MD; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and many caring friends, all of whom miss him.

Margaret Lathrop

NEWBERRY — Services for Margaret Crumpton Lathrop will be at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, April 27, 2005, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Pomaria. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday, April 26 from 7 - 8:30 p.m. at McSwain Evans Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church Building Fund, 2496 S.C. Hwy 773, Pomaria, SC 29126.

Mrs. Lathrop, 86, widow of Jack Lathrop, died April 25, 2005. Born in Newberry County, she was a daughter of the late Haskell Crumpton and Jesse Singley Crumpton. Mrs. Lathrop had retired from Newberry Mills and Anderson’s Shoe Store. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Pomaria, where she was a member of the Ladies Bible Class and the WELCA.

Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Jackie and Ricky Peny of Newberry; a sister, Mary A. Rinehart; two grandchildren, Drew Perry and wife Katie, and Nikki Perry, all of Newberry. She was predeceased by a sister, Louise Crumpton and a brother, John H. Crumpton.

Gene W. Bradham

MANNING — Services for Eugene W. “Gene” Bradham, 84, Greeleyville H.S. graduate, WWII veteran, 2 p.m. today (1 p.m. visitation): Stephens F.H. Burial: Pine Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. Born in Williamsburg Co. to James and Mary Tillman Bradham, he died April 23, 2005. He worked for the Kingstree and Manning Fire Departments, volunteering after his retirement. Surviving: nieces and nephews.

C.E. “Ed” Lawrence

CENTRAL — Mr. C.E. “Ed” Lawrence, 90, of 309 Gassaway Street, Central, S.C., died Monday, April 25, 2005. He was born in Calhoun, S.C., the son of the late Charles Rhodes and Leila Jane Lawrence.

He served as a S.C. Highway Patrolman and in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He retired from E.I. Dupont after 25 years of uninterrupted service. Mr. Lawrence was a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his loving wife, Iris; son, Cecil of Central; daughter, Marlene of Norris; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. in Mt. Zion Cemetery in Central. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, PO Box 186, Central, SC 29630.

Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home, Central-Clemson Commons, is assisting the family with arrangements.

James B. Cook

COLUMBIA — James B. Cook, 82, of Columbia, S.C., died on Tuesday, April 26, 2005. Mr. Cook was born April 27, 1922, in Charleston, W.Va.; he was the son of the late John Edward and Olive Gertrude Cook.

He is survived by his son, Jon Cook of Columbia; daughter, Jeri Raikos of Springfield, MO; grandson, James Cook of Columbia; granddaughters, Kim Harbison, Kayce Clampitt, both of Columbia, Sara Cook of Reno, NV; and four great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Y. Cook; brothers, Oris and John; sisters, Lorena, Louise and Georganna; sons, James and Jae; and daughter, Janet.

The family would like to thank the staff of Lexington Medical Center Extended Care for their kindness and care shown to Mr. Cook. In honor of Mr. Cook’s wishes, funeral services will be private with burial in Laurens, S.C.

Ricardo Lee

COLUMBIA — Services for Mr. Ricardo Rickey Lee, 50, of Columbia, will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at Palmer Memorial Chapel with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Palmer Memorial Chapel is in charge.

Mr. Lee died Sunday, April 24, 2005. Born in Washington , D.C., he was the son of Frank and Wilhelmenia Grant Lee. He was a graduate of Eastern High School and attended the District of Columbia University in Washington , D.C. He served his country honorably in the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of Abundant Life Outreach Ministries in West Columbia. He found his passion and his true calling in service to others as a 911 emergency dispatcher. He worked diligently with his co-workers, fire fighters, police officers, deputies and others at Columbia Central where he was known affectionately as “Lee.” Rickey was a very giving and loving person who opened his heart and home by literally providing shelter to many people in need.

Surviving are his son, Ricardo Antoine Lee, Washington , D.C.; his parents of Columbia; sister, Ernestine Lee Middleton, Blythewood, S.C.; brother, Derella A. (Donna) Lee, Washington , D.C.; aunts, Beatrice Bartley, Evelena Parker, Asalee Gray all of Md., Bertha Alston, Laura Grant of Sumter, S.C., and Ruby Deschamp, N.J.; a very special spiritual daughter, Cry Leggett and her sons of Columbia; nieces; nephews; cousins; and a host of other relatives; friends and the many recipients of his service to the community.
