Janie Smith

HARTSVILLE — Funeral services for Janie Mae Smith, age 90, widow of J.A. Smith, who died April 26, will be held Friday at 2 from the Kelleytown Baptist Church. Rev. Gary Anderson and Rev. Lin Kirkman will officiate. Burial will be in the Westview Memorial Cemetery directed by Norton Funeral Home. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at Kelleytown Baptist Church. Mrs. Smith was born in Lee County, a daughter of the late Harvey and Ella Dennis Barfield. She was a member of Kelleytown Baptist Church, retired from Sonoco Products Co. after 40 years of service, and was a member of the Old Timers Club. Surviving are brother: Woodrow Barfield, Fort Mill. She was preceded in death by sisters: Sadie Hill and Rochester Blakey; Brothers: Fred, Garley, Charles, Sam, Leo, Wesley and Harold Barfield. A special thanks to her caregiver and niece Mary Williams. Memorials may be made to the Kelleytown Baptist Church, 2609 Kelleytown Road, Hartsville, SC 29550, or Carolinas Hospice, 121 East Cedar Street, Florence, SC 29501.

Al Lybrand

COLUMBIA — Funeral service of Mr. Al Desse Lybrand, 75, of Columbia, will be held 2 o’clock Thursday afternoon, April 28, 2005, at Ebenezer Lutheran Church with Pastor Frank Honeycutt and Pastor Paul Pingel officiating. Interment will be at 5 o’clock in Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Johnston, S.C. The family will receive friends from 5:30 until 7:30 this (Wednesday) evening in the Parlor of Ebenezer Lutheran Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Ebenezer Lutheran Church Organ Fund, 1301 Richland Street, Columbia, SC 29201. Shives Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Lybrand died Monday, April 25, 2005. Born in Talatha (Aiken County), S.C., he was a son of the late Allen Bowman and Cora Toole Lybrand. He was a graduate of Wagener High School and enlisted in the U.S. Army, 82nd Airborne, and served during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Lybrand worked in Automotive, Industrial, & Marine Sales. Mr. Lybrand was a member of Ebenezer Lutheran Church, and after serving multiple terms on the church council, was made an honorary life member of the council. He also served on various committees and shared his woodworking skills by making many gifts to the church. He was a member of the Ebenezer and Columbia Bach Choirs where he was a baritone soloist. He was a member of St. Andrews Ruritan Club, a long time Meals on Wheels volunteer and ELC Member Care Outreach.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Joyce Hair Lybrand of Columbia; sons and daughters-in-law, Brent B. and Judy Lybrand of Spartanburg, S.C., and Mark W. and Betsy Lybrand of Columbia; grandchildren, David and Kevin Lybrand of Spartanburg and Nick, Lindsay, and Blythe Lybrand of Columbia; sister, Nita L. Stoudemire of Columbia and brother, James E. Lybrand of Leesville, S.C. Mr. Lybrand was preceded in death by sisters, Vickie Lybrand and Gussie L. Cook.

Virginia Matthews

SALUDA — Virginia Forrest Rodgers Matthews, 82, of 743 Ridge Spring Hwy., died Tuesday, April 26, 2005, at her home. Born in Saluda County on July 14, 1923, daughter of Mr. Gregg Forrest and Mrs. Lula Shealy Forrest, she was the wife of the late James Ralph Matthews and was a member of St. Williams Catholic Church.

Surviving are her children, Patrick L. Rodgers of Saluda and Lewie Rodgers of Hodges, three sisters, Mrs. Mary Hallman of Ward, Mrs. Eleanor Hare of Monetta and Mrs. Delight Matthews Rodgers of Saluda, four grandchildren, Michael Rodgers, Lisa Rodgers, Anna Rodgers and Kim Huckaby, four great-grandchildren, Ward and Patrick Burrus, Chase and Cade Rodgers.

Mrs. Matthews was predeceased by her first husband, Mike Rodgers, her brother, J.W. Forrest and granddaughters, Melissa Rodgers Burrus and Leigh Ann Rodgers.

The Family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Wednesday evening at Ramey Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, April 28, 2005, at St. William’s Catholic Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to St. William’s Catholic Church Cemetery Fund, 1199 Ridge Spring Highway, Ward, SC 29166.

Linda Funchess

SUMTER — Services for Linda Ann Weston Funchess, 53, 3 p.m. Thursday (viewing 2 p.m.) at Mt. Pisgah AME Church. Burial: Hillside Memorial Park. Wake is 7-7:30 tonight at Job’s Mortuary. Born in Sumter to Thomas and Annie Weston, she died April 24, 2005. Surviving: children, Tiffany Dantzler, Samantha Funchess; siblings, David, Loraine Weston; grandchildren, Clinetta, DaQuan, DeAndre, Darius, Shakyla; others.

Robert Carpenter Sr.

SUMTER — A memorial service for Robert Carpenter Sr., 79, WWII Navy veteran, is 11 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Missionary Church, where he was a member, with burial in National Cemetery, Florence. Job’s Mortuary is in charge. Born in Lexington, Ky., to Robert Carpenter and Alice Dunn, he died April 22, 2005. Surviving: wife, Paralee Wilder Carpenter; daughter, Joan Mickey; 4 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren.

Debbie R. Funderburke

MARTINEZ, Ga. — Debbie Roberson Funderburke, 53, of Martinez, GA, entered into rest on Sunday, April 24, 2005, at the residence of her sister. A native of Manning, SC, she had resided in Martinez for the past 18 months, during which time she had attended the First Baptist Church of Augusta.

She is survived by her daughter, Jessica Montez Funderburke of Mt. Pleasant, SC; her parents, Montez C. Rowland of Irmo, SC, and C. Ercell Roberson and his wife, Kathleen, of Moncks Corner; her sisters, Marilyn Barrack of Irmo and Pam Thomas and her husband, Allan, of Martinez, GA; nephews, Adam Barrack of Irmo, Callan E. Thomas of Martinez, GA; a niece, Laurel K. Thomas of Martinez, GA; aunts, Belva C. Munn of Charleston, Leola C. Ridgeway of St. Matthews, Alma C. Bramlett of Scranton, and Juanita R. Hardy of Turbeville.

A memorial service will be held 7 p.m. Thursday evening, April 28, 2005, at the Chapel of Dial-Murray Funeral Home, Moncks Corner, with her sister, the Reverend Pam Thomas, officiating.

The family will receive friends from 5:30 p.m. until the hour of service on Thursday at the funeral home.

George Campbell Jr.

COLUMBIA — Services for George Campbell Jr. are 4 p.m. Thursday at Friendship Baptist Church, House St., and 2 p.m. Friday at Oak Grove AMC Zion Church with burial in Riverside Community Cemetery, both in Erwin, N.C. A.A. Dicks Funeral Home, Sullivan Chapel, is in charge. He died April 23, 2005. Surviving: children, James, Christopher, Dinah, Tawana Campbell, Altha Brockman; special friend, Louise Adams; siblings, James, Lonnie, Ernest, Charles, Ora, Bessie, Margaret.

Marrien Walker

ALTA-MONTE SPRINGS, Fla. — Services for Marrien Walker, 56, are 1 p.m. Thursday at Mt. Sinai Baptist Church with burial in Frampton Cemetery, both in Varnville, S.C. Visitation is 6-8 tonight at Riley’s Funeral Home, Hampton, S.C. She died April 21, 2005. Surviving are sons, Jamie Walker, Jacob Marion Jr.; father, Isiah Cohen; siblings, Tommy, Quillie, Carl, Gerral, Harry, Barry, Frances, Margarlett, Dether.

Martha Kay Miles

ELGIN — A memorial service for Martha Kay Miles, 48, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Abundant Life Church, Florence, with visitation to follow. Brockington Funeral Home, Lake City, is in charge. Born in Florence to Rev. Cleo and Dorothy Evans Miles, she died April 25, 2005. Surviving are daughters, Renata Powlas, Audrey Cashwell; brothers, Elwin, Danny, Ricky Miles; grandson, Matthew Powlas.

Sandra Jane Baxla

COLUMBIA — Funeral Services for Mrs. Sandra Jane Baxla, 66, of Columbia, will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, April 28, 2005, at Greenlawn Funeral Home Chapel with her granddaughter, Jayme Wilson Stoeckl, giving the eulogy. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home. The family has entrusted Greenlawn Funeral Home for the arrangements.

Mrs. Baxla died Sunday, April 24, 2005. Born in Providence, Kentucky, she was the daughter of the late Cecil Green and Elsie Bruce.

Surviving are her loving and devoted husband of 42 years, Robert A. Baxla; daughters, Beverly Wilson and her husband Chuck of Plano, Texas , Patricia Ann Young of Columbia, SC, and Robyn Lynn Hammons and her husband Jasen of Lexington, SC; her beloved sister, Mary Elizabeth Armstrong of Richfield, North Carolina; brothers, Cecil Green, Jr. of Florida and Johnnie Green of Providence, Kentucky; four grandchildren, Jayme Stoeckl, Justin Wilson, Jonathan Hammons and Joshua Hammons; and one great-grandchild, Andrew Stoeckl.

Staci Harmon

PROSPERITY — Services for Staci Wise Harmon are 3 p.m. Thursday at Mt. Moriah AME Church. Burial: St. Matthew AME Churchyard. F.B. Pratt & Son Funeral Home, Newberry, is in charge. Born in Prosperity to George Sr. and Willie Mae Wise, she died April 23, 2005. Surviving: mother; husband, Andre’ children, Katrasha, China, Sarah, Giorgio Harmon, Zackinyon, Andre’ Wise; siblings; grandchildren.

Mack Gibson

LUMBERTON, N.C. — Services for Mack Gibson, 72, died April 24, 2005, are 2 p.m. Thursday (visitation 7-9 tonight): Floyd Mortuary & Crematory. Burial: Floyd Memory Gardens. Surviving: wife, Janice; children, Dewey Gibson, Fort Mill, S.C., Rhonda Taylor, Columbia, S.C., Cynthia Gibson, California, Jhonda (Homer) Richardson, Columbia, S.C., Bonnie (James) Britt, Lumberton; grandchildren; great-grandchildren.

Maxine C. Errington

COLUMBIA — Memorial services for Maxine C. Errington, 86, formerly of Leesburg, FL, will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 28, 2005, at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel with visitation immediately following the service.

Mrs. Errington widow of Stanley Errington, died Monday, April 25, 2005. Born on March 10, 1919, in Baltimore, MD, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Mary Cramblitt Childs.

She is survived by her daughter, Audrey Volonis of Columbia; sons, Douglas C. Errington and D. David Errington both of Florida; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Harry Childs; and sister Audrey Waters.

Lillie Mae Broach Benton

FLORENCE — Lillie Mae Broach Benton, age 90, died on Monday, April 25, 2005, at her home in the Evergreen Community of Florence County. Born in Mars Bluff, she was the daughter of the late Hosea Wilson and Addie Cox Broach. She was preceded in death by brothers Carl, Wilson, Leonard and Chalmers; sisters, Ethel, Thelma, Annie Lee, Allie Byrd; and grandsons, Ray Wade and Lee Benton.

Mrs. Benton was married to the late Troulden Lee Benton for 43 years and was blessed with four children: daughter, Harriett Benton McElveen and her husband Ray of Saluda; sons, Gilbert Benton and his wife Nancy, Vernon Benton and his wife Lois, and T.L. Benton, Jr., all of Florence. She was a loving Christian wife, mother, and proud “Grandma” to 12 grandchildren; 2 stepgrandchildren, 32 great and stepgreat-grandchildren, and many loving nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Benton had been a member of Evergreen Baptist Church for 59 years, was presently a member of the Lillian Gunter Fellowship Sunday School Class and was the oldest member of the congregation. She became a Christian as a young woman and was baptized in Lyches River on a beautiful Sunday afternoon.

She was an avid gardener with special love for roses, amaryllis and peonies. She shared floral arrangements from her yard, along with her famous pound cakes with the sick, her family and friends. None of us will ever forget the cards sent on birthdays, anniversaries and to those who were sick. She will be missed by family, neighbors, friends and all who knew her and loved her smiling face and sweet spirit.

Funeral Services will be held at Evergreen Baptist Church on Thursday, April 28, 2005, at 2:00 p.m., officiated by Rev. Quinn Hooks, Rev. Norman McKee and Rev. Joe Reed. Burial will follow in The Garden of Memories on Pamplico Hwy. (#51), directed by Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home of Florence.

The family will receive friends at Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home, South Irby Street on Wednesday, April 27, 2005, from 6:00-8:00 p.m.

Memorials may be made to Evergreen Baptist Church, 6315 Pamplico Hwy., Effingham, SC 29541 or to the McLeod Hospice, 555 E. Cheves St., Florence, SC 29501. The Family expresses deep appreciation to the dedicated staff of McLeod Hospice who so lovingly cared for “Grandma” during her illness.

Olive Faust Dickinson

BARNWELL — Olive Faust Dickinson, 89, widow of Howard G. Dickinson Sr., died Tuesday, April 26, 2005, in Barnwell, SC.

Born in Allendale County, SC, she was the daughter of the late Lawrence S. and Johnnie Mears Faust. She was a member of the Barnwell United Methodist Church and Chat “N” Chew. She was a Charter member of Iris Garden Club. She was the Past Worthy Matron of Harmony Hope Chapter Order of the Eastern Star.

Graveside Service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 28, 2005, in Barnwell County Memorial Cemetery with the Rev. Joey McDonald officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:30-2:30 p.m. Thursday at Mole Funeral Home.

Survivors include: son, Howard G. (Medoweise) Dickinson Jr. of Barnwell; adopted son, Arthur Youmans of Hampton, SC; daughters, Betty (Nolan) Eubanks of Barnwell, Billie D. Dobbs of Blackville; 4 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by four sisters.
