William Hill

COLUMBIA — Services for Mr. William Thomas Hill, “Dap,” will be held 2 p.m. Thursday (viewing at 1 p.m.) at Rehoboth Baptist Church with burial on Friday in Florence National Cemetery, Florence, S.C. Leevy’s Funeral Home, Taylor Street Chapel, is in charge.

Surviving are his wife, Carolyn Hill, daughter, Ashley Hill; brothers, Robert, Walter, Vaughan, James, John Gregory and Anthony Hill.

T. Ted Hudson

CAMDEN — Funeral services for Thomas Ted Hudson, 74, will be held on Thursday, April 28, 2005, at 11:00 a.m. at Lyttleton Street United Methodist Church with burial to follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Rev. T. Lee Bryant and Rev. Thomas Smith will officiate. The family will receive friends Wednesday, April 27, 2005, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Kornegay Funeral Home Camden Chapel and at other times at the home. Memorials may be made to George Mason Scholarship Fund, Lyttleton Street United Methodist Church, 1206 Lyttleton Street, Camden, SC 29020 or to the Kershaw County Medical Center Hospital Foundation, P.O. Box 7003, Camden, SC 29020.

Mr. Hudson died Monday, April 25, 2005. Born in Fairfield County, he was the son of the late Joe and Blanche Greene Hudson. Mr. Hudson retired from the DuPont Company and was a member of Lyttleton Street United Methodist Church. He was also a former member of the Camden Jaycees and the Sertoma Club.

Surviving are his wife, Dorene Hartsell Hudson; children, Debra and Ray Hudgins of Atlanta, Colonel Wayne and Donna Hudson of Virginia, Tim and Kim Hudson of Camden, Murton J. and Ashley Hudson of Summerville; sister, Mr. and Mrs. W.R. Ogburn (Dorothy), Mr. and Mrs. John Cole (Peggy); sister-in-law, Mary Hudson; grandchildren, Jeffrey, Ryan and Randy Hudgins, Sean and Megan Hudson, Creighten and Madison Hudson, Courtney and Cameron Hudson. He was predeceased by brothers, Joe and Bob Hudson.

Doug Purcell

KINGSTREE — Douglas Lee “Doug” Purcell, Sr., 68, died Tuesday, April 26, at his residence after an illness. Mr. Purcell as born May 6, 1936, in Coney, GA, a son of the late William Douglas and Olivia Gignilliat Purcell. He was a graduate of Hemingway High School and attended Newberry College. He served in the U.S. Army 3rd Infantry Division in Europe and had retired from Firestone Building Products. Mr. Purcell was a member of Kingstree United Methodist Church, a past President of the Omar Jokers unit, Past President of the Kingstree Rotary Club, past Governor of the Kingstree Moose Lodge, a past President of the Kingstree Jaycees, where he was awarded a lifetime membership as a JCI Senator, a member of the Omar Shrine Temple and a Commissioner on Pee Dee Tourism.

Surviving: his wife, Judy Huggins Purcell of Kingstree; son, Douglas Lee Purcell, Jr. of Kingstree; daughter, Dane P. (Al) Langmo of Kingstree; granddaughter, Ashley Elizabeth Langmo and a sister, Doris (Andy) Curry of Hemingway.

Graveside funeral services will be 3 p.m. Thursday in Old Johnsonville United Methodist Church Cemetery, with Rev. Laurie McAlpine and Rev. Mickey Bell officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Williamsburg Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Tidelands Hospice, Georgetown, or Kingstree United Methodist Church.

Louthan Charles Housand

LONGS — Mr. Louthan Charles Housand, age 80, of the Buck Creek community, died Monday, April 25, 2005, at his home following an illness. Born April 28, 1924, in Longs, SC, Mr. Housand was the son of the late Charles Coval Housand and the late Daisy Lucille Cox Housand. Mr. Housand was a member of Buck Creek Baptist Church for over 65 years.

Mr. Housand enlisted in the United States Navy on May 6, 1941. He served aboard ships in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans during World War II. Following Naval duty, Mr. Housand served in the United States Army and attained the rank of Sergeant First Class. Mr. Housand later served in the United States Air Force as a Security Officer on nuclear-loaded B-52s until he retired from the military in 1965. Mr. Housand served in the Conway Police Department from 1967 until 1979.

Survivors include his wife, Sylvia G. Housand of Longs, SC; three daughters, Tammy Housand Lilly and husband, Mark K., of Longs, SC, Dawn Housand Mehalic and husband, Darian G., of Whiteville, NC, and Gail Housand Suggs, and husband, Gary, of Chadbourn, NC; two sisters, Kathryn Housand Hyman of Longs, SC, and Foy H. Floyd and husband, Willie, of Casey, SC; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Mr. Housand was predeceased by one son, Dwight “Pete” Housand.

Funeral services with full military honors will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday (4/27/05) at Hardwick Memorial Chapel with burial following in Buck Creek Cemetery. Officiated by Reverend Larry Allen. Visitatin will be held one hour prior to services at Hardwick Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Buck Creek Baptist Church Building Fund, 11843 Hwy. 905 North, Longs, SC 29568. Directed by Hardwick Funeral Home of Loris, SC.

Allen Jones Jr.

CHARLESTON — Mr. Allen Jones, Jr., 88, formerly of Columbia, SC, died peacefully on April 23, 2005, in Edenbrook in Charleston, SC.

Friends and relatives are invited to attend a memorial service on April 29, 2005, at 2:00 p.m. at the Summerall Chapel, The Citadel, Charleston, SC, the Rev. Dr. George Johnson Tompkins, III officiating. Interment will follow on Saturday, April 30, 2005, at 2:00 p.m. in Elmwood Cemetery in Columbia, SC. Friends and relatives are invited to the home of Lisa and John Gantt, 98 Murray Blvd, Charleston, SC, on Thursday, April 28, from 6 until 8:00 p.m.

Allen Jones was born Nov. 8, 1916 in Columbia, SC, son of the late Helen Iredell Williams, an artist born in Wilmington, NC, and Allen Jones, textile engineer and genealogist, originally from Columbia, SC. Mr. Jones received his undergraduate degree from The Citadel, Class of ’38, and Master’s in Engineering from the University of Tennessee in 1939.

He served his country bravely and honorably in the United States Army, 2nd Division, in the European theatre from North Africa to Italy, Sicily, England, France and Germany, and was awarded the Bronze Star. After honorable discharge as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1945, he spent his career in Knoxville, TN, and Columbia, SC, as a consulting structural engineer. He was especially proud of the design work he did on buildings throughout the South, including the College of Nursing, Clemson University; the Carolina Coliseum, Columbia, SC; St. Joseph’s Hospital, Asheville, NC. He also consulted for structures in Connecticut, Texas , and California, and the subway system in Singapore. In his retirement he worked briefly as a substitute teacher in Richland County School District No. 1.

Mr. Jones was an avid athlete who ran track and played football in high school and for The Citadel. He maintained his interest in running and was a fixture in many races across South Carolina during the 1970s, 80s and 90s, including the Cooper River Bridge Run and the Governor’s Cup. In his later years he was often the oldest competitor and was an inspiration to many with his determined attitude and good humor. An award-winning writer, he was also dedicated to reading, memorizing, and reciting poetry. Assuming the task of unofficial family archivist like his father, Mr. Jones was devoted to family and friends, remembered by many for his letters and visits.

Surviving are his brother, Cadwallader Jones of Charleston, SC; sons, Allen Jones IV of Leesburg, SC and Philip Iredell Jones of Irmo, SC; daughters, Edith Margaret Jones Bikle of Honoka’a, Hawaii; Elizabeth Porcher Jones of Charleston, SC; Penelope Whedbee Jones Carroll of Wilmington, NC; Marion DuBose Jones Hopkins of Atlanta, GA; six grandchildren: Pendleton Tompkins, Porcher Tompkins, Alison Hopkins, Sarah Hopkins, Abigail Carroll and Eleanor Carroll. His sister, Jane Iredell Jones Clarke, formerly of Charleston and Asheville, NC, preceded him in death.

The family requests that memorials be made to The Citadel Brigadier Foundation, 171 Moultrie Street, Charleston, SC 29409, or to a charity of one’s choice.

Edith Starkes

COLUMBIA — Services for Mrs. Edith Mitchell Starkes will be held noon Thursday (viewing at 11 a.m.) at Brookland Baptist Church, with burial in Celestial Memorial Gardens. Leevy’s Funeral Home, Taylor Street Chapel, is in charge.

Surviving are her husband, James Starkes; son, Tony Felder; sister, Fanny Fox; brother, Herbert L. Bracey; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

James R. Sumter

HOPKINS — Funeral service for James R. Sumter, of 157 Mt. View Road, will be held 3 p.m. Thursday, April 28, 2005, at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church with the Reverend Blakely N. Scott officiating. Interment will follow in Zion Benevolent Baptist Church Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church one hour prior to service. Visitation will be held Wednesday, April 26, 2005, 4-9 p.m. at the funeral home.

J.P. Holley Funeral Home, Garners Ferry Road Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Sumter died Monday, April 25, 2005. Born in Hopkins, he was the son of the late Gladys R. Lovelace and the adopted son of the late Elkannah and Mary Sumter. He was a member of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, where he served as a trustee. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Navy.

He is survived by his wife, Julia A. Sumter; sons, Samuel E. (Penelope) Sumter, Marvin (Janice) Sumter, Willie J. (Elizabeth) Sumter, Ira (Dianna) Sumter; daughter, Angela D. Lawrence, Karen (Ivory) Hemphill; sisters, Jacqueline (Willie) Nowell, Rebecca (William) Weston; twelve grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, loving relatives and friends.

Mary Alexander Crittenden

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Mary Alexander Crittenden died Thursday, April 28, 2005, after a brief illness. She was a resident at the Well Spring Retirement Community in Greensboro, North Carolina.

A graveside service will be held at a later date in the churchyard of Trinity Cathedral in Columbia, South Carolina.

Born Mary Danto Bedell in 1914 in Jacksonville, Florida, Mrs. Crittenden was the daughter of George and Louisa Bedell of Jacksonville. Mr. Bedell was a senior partner in what is now the law firm of Bedell, Dittmar, DeVault Pillans and Coxe. Miss Bedell attended Andrew Jackson High School there, and Florida State University in Tallahassee. In the Thirties, she married George Moyer Alexander of Jacksonville. Mr. Alexander was then studying for the Episcopal priesthood.

Mr. and Mrs. Alexander served Florida parishes in Green Cove Springs and Orange Park, Palatka and Gainesville. In the Forties, the Alexanders moved to Columbia, South Carolina, when he was elected Rector of Trinity Church, the largest Episcopal congregation in the country. When he was elected Dean of the School of Theology at the University of the South, the Alexanders moved to Sewanee, Tennessee. They served there with distinction for many years. Mrs. Alexander was a frequent volunteer and hostess, and she taught in a school for disabled children.

When Mr. Alexander was elected Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Upper South Carolina in the Seventies, the Alexanders moved back to Columbia. After her husband’s death in 1983, Mrs. Alexander moved to Greensboro to be near her youngest son and his family. She subsequently married William Crittenden, the retired Episcopal Bishop of Erie (Northwest Pennsylvania ). Mrs. Crittenden is believed to have been the only woman ever to have been married to two Episcopal bishops. Bishop Crittenden died in 2003.

She is survived by two sons, the Reverend Stephen Alexander of Cincinnati, and John Alexander of Greensboro; and four grandchildren, George Alexander and Starratt Alexander of Cincinnati, Chris Alexander of Denver, and Louisa Alexander of Philadelphia.

Hanes-Lineberry, North Elm Street Chapel, is assisting the Crittenden family.

Miriam Clark

WEST COLUMBIA — Services for Miriam Truesdale Clark, 77, of West Columbia, will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 1, 2005, in the Chapel of Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington, conducted by Rev. John Rogers and Rev. M.D. Connor. With burial to follow at Celestial Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to Edwards Memorial Presbyterian Church.

The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. prior to the service.

Mrs. Clark died Friday, April 29, 2005, born in Kershaw County, she was a daughter of the late Ernest B. and Juanita Gregory Truesdale. Formerly of Kershaw, she had been a local resident here for 57 years and was a member of Edwards Memorial Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are her husband, John Duncan Clark of West Columbia; daughters and sons-in-law, Carolyn and Jim Doty of West Columbia, Sharon and Efrain Santana of Kernersville, NC, Janice and Gary Buice of Greenville, and Patricia Branham of Lexington; sister, Joline Brown of West Columbia; eight grandchildren, Brandon Dillard, Lindsay Dillard, Austin Buice, Steven Doty, Christina Doty, Hope Branham, Paige Branham, and Dalton Branham.

Louise Hartley Yelton Bailes

WEST COLUMBIA — Services for Louise Hartley Yelton Bailes, 95, of West Columbia, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 1, 2005, in the Chapel of Thompson Funeral Home of West Columbia, officiated by Rev. Dr. Lonnie H. Shull. Burial will follow at Woodridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of West Columbia, For Such A Time As This.

Mrs. Bailes, widow of Vernie Elijah Yelton, died Wednesday, April 27, 2005. Born in Batesburg, she was the daughter of the late Milton Roston and Bessie Stone Hartley. Mrs. Bailes was the oldest member of First Baptist Church of West Columbia and a member of Woodmen of the World. She had retired as a seamstress.

Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Harold and Annie Ruth Yelton of Simpsonville; grandchildren, David LaMarr Yelton (Kathy) of Ft. Worth, TX, Dr. John Richard Yelton (Adina) of Greer, Elizabeth Anne Yelton of San Francisco, CA; six great-grandchildren, Caleb, Luke, Lidia, Kevin, Laurel, and Connor.

Mrs. Bailes was predeceased by a daughter, Joan Vivian Yelton.

Elizabeth Fogle

COLUMBIA — Services for Mrs. Carrie Elizabeth “Sugar” Outen Fogle will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church, Killian, with burial in the church cemetery. Leevy’s Funeral Home, Taylor Street Chapel is in charge. Surviving are her husband, Roosevelt Fogle; daughter, Annette Fogle; son, Eric Fogle; adopted son, Charley Moseley; 7 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren.

Anita Holliday

ANDERSON — Mrs. Anita Gable Holliday, age 76, wife of Ed Holliday of 520 Visage Drive, Anderson, SC, died Thursday, April 28, 2005, at her residence.

Born in Iva, S.C., on March 13, 1929, she was a daughter of the late Furman Keith Gable and Juanita Sutherland Gable. She was a member of The Order of the Eastern Star and Landmark Freewill Baptist Church. She was also a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Ed Holliday of the home; son, Louie Clarence Dean and his wife, Elaine Rainey Dean of Wilberton, OK; daughter, Eva Dyanne Dean Collins and her husband, Buddy J. Collins of Smyrna, GA; twin sister, Juanita Madden and her husband, Doug Madden of Hartwell, GA; half-brother, Thomas Neil Gable of Belton, SC; half-sister, Brenda G. Morgan of Iva, SC; a grandson, Adam Clarence Dean of Tulsa, OK, and a great-granddaughter, Lilee Janai Dean of Wilberton, OK.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three half-brothers, Garnett Floyd Gable, Furman Keith Gable and Gerald Clark Gable.

Funeral service will be held on Sunday, May 1, 2005, at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home officiated by the Reverends Danny Keen and James Coley. Entombment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum in Anderson, SC.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday, April 30, 2005, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The family will be at the residence.

Flowers are optional. Memorials may be made to Landmark Freewill Baptist Church, 128 Camellia Drive, Anderson, SC 29625 or to the National Kidney Foundation, P.O. Box 212634, Columbia, SC 29221-2634.
