Mabel Fincher

WEST COLUMBIA — Graveside services for Mabel Hendren Fincher, 87, of West Columbia, will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 1, 2005, in Celestial Memorial Gardens, conducted by Pastor Rick Lamp. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society. The family will receive friends from 2-3 p.m. prior to the service at Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington.

Mrs. Fincher, widow of Sam W. Fincher, died Thursday, April 28, 2005. Born September 10, 1917, in Laurinburg, N.C., she was a daughter of the late John B. and Elizabeth Ward Hendren. Mrs. Fincher had been a local resident in West Columbia since 1955.

Surviving are her daughter, Linda Hendrix of Goose Creek; grandson, Adam Runey of Orange County, CA.; sister, Mrs. Dorothy H. Poe of Mt. Gilead, NC; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Phyllis A. Hamilton

GILBERT — Memorial services for Phyllis Ann Hamilton, 66, will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 1, 2005, at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel, with visitation immediately following the service. Memorials may be made to American Heart Association, 4217 Park Place Ct., Glenn Allen, VA 23060.

Mrs. Hamilton died Sunday, April 24, 2005. Born on January 26, 1939, in Olney, OK, she was the daughter of the late Ervin and Sudie Taylor Collins.

She is survived by her husband, David Hamilton of Gilbert; children, Michael David Hamilton of Prince George, VA, Mark Windsor Hamilton of East Bend, N.C., James Robert Hamilton of Sanford, N.C.; sister, Edwina Ritterager of Atascadero, CA; and five grandchildren.

Annis Wingard

WEST COLUMBIA — Services for Annis Price Wingard, 73, of West Columbia, will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 30, 2005, at Northside Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. Dr. Steve Cloud, Rev. Joe Reed and Rev. Steve Allen. With burial to follow in Woodridge Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or Northside Baptist Church General Fund. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 3 p.m. prior to the service in the parlor at the church.

Mrs. Wingard, widow of Sam Wingard, died Monday, April 25, 2005. Born in Gilbert, SC, she was a daughter of the late Charlie Wilbur and Rilzie Marie Taylor Price. Mrs. Wingard was a lifetime area resident and a member of Northside Baptist Church.

Srviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Jan and Phillip Anderson of West Columbia; son, Teddy Wingard of West Columbia; daughter-in-law, Patty Wingard of West Columbia; sisters, Judy Brannon of Alabama, Yvonne Wingard, and Jeanette Porth, both of Lexington; brothers, C.W. Price of Lexington and Alastare Price of Cayce; grandchildren, Jason Wingard of West Columbia, Landy Wingard of Greenville, Greg Wingard of West Columbia, Chris Northcutt of Lexington, Jared Anderson and Kenedi Anderson, both of West Columbia; one great-grandson, Sam Wingard of Greenville; and Zeke Wingard.

Mrs. Wingard was predeceased by her son, Dean Wingard, two sisters, Lessie Mae Price Taylor and Catherine Taylor.

Mrs.Wingard was very dedicated to her family, friends, and those in need, and she will be greatly missed by everyone.

Deanna Jowers

JEFFERSON — Services for Deanna O. Jowers, 42, 2 p.m. Sunday (visitation 6-8 tonight) at Jefferson 1st Baptist Church, burial: Angelus Methodist Churchyard. Sutton Funeral Home, Pageland, is in charge. Born in Mooresville, N.C., to Bud Overcash and Helen Rollins, she died April 29, 2005. Surviving: husband, Kenny; father; sons, Calin, Cash Jowers; brothers, Dave, Dean, Doug, Darrell, Ricky, Phil; sister, Lisa Eakes.

Michael Truesdale Sr.

WINNSBORO — Funeral services for Michael Eric Truesdale, Sr., 47, will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 1, 2005, at Rockton Baptist Church in Winnsboro, conducted by The Reverend Tom Schoonmaker and The Reverend William Porter. Burial will follow in Fairfield Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Saturday, April 30, at Pope Funeral Home.

Born December 25, 1957, Mr. Truesdale was the son of Andrew (Roy) and Peggy Adams Truesdale. Mr. Truesdale died Wednesday, April 27, 2005. He was a pipefitter in the nuclear energy industry and a member of Rockton Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Truesdale is survived by his wife, Cathy Rogers Truesdale of the home; a son, Michael E. Truesdale, Jr. of Winnsboro; three daughters, Christina D. Truesdale, Erica L. Truesdale, and Tosha M. Sims, all of Winnsboro; a brother, Andy Truesdale; and a sister, Pam Branham, also of Winnsboro; and 8 grandchildren.

Pope Funeral home is assisting the Truesdale family.

Frances Smith

MYRTLE BEACH — Frances “Frankie” Marian Johnson Smith, 79, died Friday morning at her home surrounded by her family following an illness.

She was born February 9, 1926, in Conway, S.C., a daughter of the late Franklin Gurley and Maude Olivia Hendrick Johnson. Her brothers, Aubrey Lee Johnson and Jesse Willard “Jack” Johnson both predeceased her.

Mrs. Smith was a graduate of Conway High School and attended Coker College. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Myrtle Beach, Wesley Fellowship Sunday School Class and the Louise Springs Circle. Frankie was a huge baseball fan and loved watching the game, and she was also a Cub Scout Den Mother. She was a loving wife, mother, sister and grandmother and was affectionately known as “Ging-Ging” by her grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband of 54 years, Dr. J. Marcus Smith; three sons; J. Marcus Smith, Jr. and his wife Sherry, Dr. Franklin N. Smith and his wife Maria and David R. Smith and his wife Michelle who provided their mother’s care for over two years; a sister, Mary Elizabeth Bowie and her husband Charlie, all of Myrtle Beach; and six grandchildren, Marcus, Will, Anna, Luisa, Andrew and Hilton Smith, all of Myrtle Beach, SC.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, May 1, 2005, at First United Methodist Church of Myrtle Beach with Rev. Kenneth B. Timmerman, Rev. Thomas Brittain and Rev. Scarlett Tanner-Hester officiating. Burial will follow the service in Lakeside Cemetery in Conway, SC.

The family will receive friends at McMillan-Small Funeral Home in Myrtle Beach on Saturday, April 30, 2005, from 5-7 p.m.

Memorials may be made in Frankie’s honor to First United Methodist Church, PO Box 1384, Myrtle Beach, SC 29578.

Mizlee Gibson

HARTSVILLE — Services for Mizlee D. Gibson, 83, widow of William Gibson, 3 p.m. Sunday: Praise Temple. Burial: Middendorf Church of God Cemetery. Visitation 6-8 tonight: Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Born in Chesterfield to Walter and Katherine B. Dixon, she died April 29, 2005. Surviving: children, Travis Hancock, Jeannette Mims, Linda Shaw; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild.

Willie Joe Smith

HAMPTON — A graveside service for Willie Joe Smith, 50, 2 p.m. today in New Hope Cemetery, Varnville. Riley’s Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Hampton Co. to Fred and Pearl Smith, he died April 27, 2005. Surviving: mother; siblings, Jennie, Gwendolyn, Deloris, Vanessa, Eloise, Juanita, Clarence, Jimmie, Lee, Bobby, Arthur, Carnell, Micheal, Scottie, Hector; 2 stepsisters; stepmothers, Emma, Carrie.

Nevada Canales

BENNETTSVILLE — Services for Nevada Adams Canales, 58, are 3 p.m. Sunday (visitation 7-9 tonight) at Kiser Funeral Home, Cheraw. A private committal service will be at a later date. Born in Bennettsville to Junious and Ruby Canada Adams, she died April 28, 2005. She was a member of Salem Baptist Church. Surviving: son, Shane Canales; siblings, Ray, Joe Adams, Valli Owens; lifelong friend, Carolyn Winslow.

Ruth Burgee Geibel Britton

COLUMBIA — Ruth Elisabeth Burgee (Geibel) Britton, age 89, of Columbia, SC, died April 26, 2005, of congestive heart failure after a short illness in Providence Hospital, Columbia, SC. She was the wife of the late Dr. Frank B.C. Geibel of Columbia, SC, who died in 1957, and the late Robert W. Britton of Columbia, SC, who died in 1989.

Born January 12, 1916, in Ijamsville, MD, she was the daughter of the late Eli McSherry and Nettie Jane (Day) Burgee of Ijamsville, MD. She graduated from Frederick High School in Frederick, MD. She was a registered nurse and graduate of Garfield Memorial Hospital for Nurses in Washington , DC. She did post-graduate work at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York City. She served as a nurse at Garfield Memorial Hospital and at Sloan Hospital in New York City. She later gained her certification to practice Real Estate through the University of South Carolina.

Surviving are her son, Capt. Bruce Burgee Geibel, USN, Retired, of Big Canoe, GA, and daughter, Brenda Geibel Newman of Marietta, GA; two grandchildren, Eric F. Geibel of Morgan City, LA, and Lisa M. Geibel of Roswell, GA; a stepson, Thomas R. Britton of Myrtle Beach, SC; two stepgrandchildren, Mrs. Trina Britton Henry of Charleston, SC, and Mrs. Tracy Britton McMillan of Elgin, SC; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Ralph M., Meil D., and William G. Burgee, all of Maryland, and three sisters, Madge Meininger and Maude Schultz of Maryland, and Nell O’Neill of Michigan and Oregon.

She had attended Pleasant Grove Methodist Church in Ijamsville, MD, and St. John’s Episcopal Church in Columbia, SC.

Funeral service to be private. Mrs. Britton’s body was donated to the University of South Carolina Medical School under the Uniform Anatomical Gift Act.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

Dexter Smith

CHESTER — Services for Dexter Eugene Smith, 58, 1965 Chester H.S. graduate, retired chemical operator for Omnova Solutions, Inc., 4 p.m. Sunday: Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation 6-8 tonight: Barron Funeral Home. Born in Chester to Charles and Lillian Starnes Smith, he died April 28, 2005. Surviving: children, Zachary (Kay), Summer; grandchildren, Trenton, Payton, Brock; sister, Teresa Huggins.

Harry Zeigler Sr.

COLUMBIA — Service for Harry Lee Zeigler, Sr., 82, will be held Sunday at 3 p.m at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society. Visitation will be Sunday 1-3 p.m. at the funeral home prior to the service.

Mr. Zeigler died Thursday, April 28, 2005. Born in St. Matthews, he was a son of the late James Lee and Blanche Crider Zeigler. An Army veteran of WW II, he retired after thirty-three years with the VA Hospital.

Surviving are his wife, Irene Davis Zeigler; daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Wayne Newman of West Columbia; son and daughter-in-law, Harry, Jr. and Marilyn Zeigler of Charleston; grandchildren, Michael Hawkins, Chris Hawkins and Ty Zeigler; great-great-grandchildren, Jacob Hawkins and Austin Hawkins; and brother, Clayton Zeigler of Bamberg. He was predeceased by brothers, Edward Zeigler, A.B. Zeigler and Linwood Zeigler.

Hubert S. Roberts

BLUE ASH, N.C. — Roberts, Hubert S. “Hu,” beloved husband of Nita C. Roberts, devoted father of Donna (Jim) Roberts and Kathy (Trent) Goetz, dear grandfather of Jessica Roberts and Wyatt Goetz, brother of Cynthia (Fred) Douglas, Wednesday, April 27, 2005. Friends may call from 4-6 p.m. Sunday at Strawser Funeral Home, 9503 Kenwood Road, Blue Ash. Funeral service is noon Monday at the funeral home. Visitation is 7-8 tonight: Bostick-Tompkins Funeral Home. Born in Columbia to Junney and Adaline H. Johnson, he died April 27, 2005. Surviving: wife, Mary G. Johnson; daughters, Mary Green, Tonya, Malinda Johnson; brother, David; grandchildren.
