Mary Sheppard

BEAUFORT — Mary Francis Bardin Bernstel Sheppard “Tannie,” 81, widow of John “Jack” Sheppard, died Thursday, April 28, 2005, in Beaufort Memorial Hospital.

Memorial services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 30, 2005, at First Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. Sheppard was born September 15, 1923, in Charleston, South Carolina, a daughter of Mary Katherine Walker Bardin and Thomas Joseph Bardin.

Mrs. Sheppard attended Lander College. In 1942, she was employed at U.S. Marine Corps in Parris Island, then the U.S. Naval Air Station (now MCAS) in Beaufort, S.C. In the early 1950s, Mrs. Sheppard was the first woman to be appointed City Clerk and Treasurer for the City of Beaufort.

Relocating with her husband to Cleveland, Texas , she was employed as a secretary/bookkeeper with the Tarkington Independent School District in Tarkington Prairie, Texas .

She returned to Beaufort in 1980, where she lived a full life enjoying her love of the ocean at Hunting Island and watching her family grow around her. Her gentle, loving spirit and strong sense of determination filtered through all the people she touched. She will be missed by us all!

She was preceded in death by her sisters, Mrs. Katherine B. “Tinkie” Morehead of Cocoa Beach, Florida and Mrs. Pauline B. “Polly” Evans of Rocky Mount, N.C.

She is survived by Carol S. Paxton of Cleveland Texas , Mary S. Murphy of Mt. Airy, Georgia, and John B. Sheppard of Beaufort, SC; 8 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

Copeland Funeral Home is in charge.

Ruth McCalvin

WINNSBORO — Services for Ruth McCalvin will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Progressive Church of Our Lord & Savior Jesus Christ. Viewing is 1-9 tonight at Glover’s Memorial Chapel. Born in Fairfield County, she died April 27, 2005. Surviving: daughters, Laura Miller, Kathleen Yarborough, Dorothy Perry; son, James Young; brothers, William, Wesley and Thomas Young; other relatives and friends.

Martha A. Rose

SWANSEA — Mrs. Martha A. Rose, age 79, of 1662 Daniel Sharpe Road, died Thursday, April 28, 2005.

Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 1, 2005, at King Grove Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Steve Kittrell, Rev. Harlan Alban and Rev. Cook Addy officiating.

Pallbearers will be grandsons.

Mrs. Rose was born in Columbia, a daughter of the late Lawrence Sanders and Azlee Watts Hornsby. She formerly worked for Etheridge Electric and was a member of King Grove Baptist Church and the Eastern Star. Mrs. Rose was married to the late Fred G. Rose.

Survivors include daughters: Gloria (David) Threatt of Swansea, Barbara (Tommy) Hyatt of Gaston, Helen (C.G.) Williamson of Pelion, Donna (John) Branstetter of Lexington; sister, Clara Senn of Irmo; brother, Steve Hornsby of Columbia; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

The family is at the home and will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Saturday at Culler-McAlhany Funeral Home in North.

Walter Charles Goodwin

WEST COLUMBIA — Memorial services for Walter Charles Goodwin, 68, of West Columbia, will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday, April 30, 2005, in the Chapel of Thompson Funeral Home of West Columbia, officiated by Rev. Steven Little. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Gaston, 121 Oakley Springs Dr., Gaston, SC 29053.

Mr. Goodwin died Wednesday, April 27, 2005. Born in Columbia, he was a son of the late Castella Snell and Naomi Pound Goodwin. Mr. Goodwin was a veteran of the Marines during the Korean Conflict.

Surviving are his children, Amanda Dawkins, Yvonne Carraway, Bruce Goodwin, Alex Martindale, Anthony Martindale, Dusty McCombs; sisters, Louise G. Taylor, Catherine Evans; brothers, Gilbert Goodwin, Richard Goodwin, Harvey Goodwin, Dibble Goodwin; and numerous grandchildren.

Virgnia Langley

ANDREWS — Virginia Richbourg Langley, 86, died Thursday, April 28, 2005, in NHC Healthcare of Sumter.

Mrs. Langley was born on June 27, 1918, a daughter of the late George Richbourg and Catherine Alsbrooks Richbourg. She grew up in Clarendon County and graduated from high school there. Mrs. Langley lived in Andrews most of her life and was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Daisy Watson Church School Class and the Esther-Elizabeth Circle of the United Methodist Women. Mrs. Langley was the widow of Luther Van Langley, Jr.

Surviving are a son, Luther Langley and his wife, Brenda of Columbia; a brother, G.O. Richbourg of Sumter; two sisters, Doris Shelly of Leesburg, Fla., and Helen Lea of Manning; three grandchildren, Tracy Blakeley of Andrews, Tanya Perrow and Tara Knowlin, both of Georgetown; and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be three o’clock Sunday afternoon, May 1, 2005, at Trinity United Methodist Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Dr. Steven M. Todd. Burial will follow in Andrews Memorial Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Saturday, April 30, 2005, from six until eight o’clock at the Andrews Chapel of Mayer Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to: Building Fund, Trinity United Methodist Church, 205 S. Rosemary Ave., Andrews, S.C. 29510.

Archie Raffinie

IRMO — Service for Archie Lee Raffinie, 59, will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel, with burial in Crescent Hill Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association. Visitation will be Saturday 6-8 p.m at the funeral home.

Mr. Raffinie died Thursday, April 28, 2005. Born in Charleston, he was the son of William Raffinie and the late Martha Smoak Raffinie, who awaits him with her arms wide open. A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, he was employed with SCE&G.

Surviving are his wife, Joyce Northcutt Raffinie; sons, Billy Raffinie of Charleston and Chip Raffinie of Irmo; daughter, Candace Raffinie of Charleston; and his father of Columbia.

Robert Wayne “Trey” Whitton III

COLUMBIA — Mr. Robert Wayne “Trey” Whitton III, 37, of Columbia, S.C., died Friday, April 29, 2005, in Palmetto Regional Hospital in Columbia, S.C. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, May 2, 2005, at Bass-Cauthen Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Mark Verdery officiating. Burial will be 4 p.m. Monday in Sharon ARP Church Cemetery in Sharon, S.C.

Born in Rock Hill, S.C., Mr. Whitton was of the Presbyterian faith and is survived by his father, Robert “Bob” Wayne Whitton Jr. of High Point, N.C.; mother, Fran B. Cottingham of Lake Wateree, S.C.; 3 sisters, Tammy Fagan of Rock Hill, Chelsea and Lyndsay Whitton of High Point, N.C.; grandmother, Louise Burgess of Camden, S.C.

The family will receive friends from noon-2 p.m. Monday, May 2, 2005, at Bass-Cauthen Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Sharon ARP Memorial Association, 3915 York St., Sharon, SC 29742.

John Moylan

WALTERBORO — John Carroll (Jack) Moylan Jr., a man of strong will and generous spirit, began life’s greatest journey on April 29, 2005 at age 78. Jack was born May 25, 1926 in Wilmington, NC to John and Geneva Mathews Moylan and moved to Walterboro as a student in the 8th grade.

Jack served as a “pile it” in the U.S. Navy during WWII. After the war, Jack returned to Presbyterian College where he made many life long friends. Jack graduated from P.C. in 1949 and later served in its Board of Visitors. He also served as an elder of Bethel Presbyterian Church.

Upon graduation from P.C., Jack returned to Walterboro where he married Bettyline Pope. Jack entered business with his father and continued as a merchant in Walterboro for most of his life.

After retiring from business, Jack taught for a short time in the public schools of Colleton County where he had previously served as president of the PTA and helped to establish the country’s Head Start Program.

Jack will be missed by his wife of 58 years, Bettyline Pope Moylan, his sisters, Jean Taylor of Roanoke, VA and Sara Schack of Charleston, his children, Betty Llew Sanders and husband, Steve, Ann Maylan and husband, Brian Donnelly, of Davis, CA, John Moylan III and wife, Jill, of Columbia, SC; grandchildren, Caroline Hooker and husband, Matt, Ellyn Sanders, Kathryn and Mathew Donnelly, John and Eva Moylan; great grandchildren, Stephanie and Matthew Hooker. He was preceded in death by his brother, David H. Moylan of Atlanta, GA.

A memorial service will be held Sunday afternoon at 3:00 in Bethel Presbyterian Church in Walterboro. Parker-Rhoden Funeral Home of Walterboro is handling arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to the John C. Moylan Scholarship Fund at Presbyterian College or to Bethel Presbyterian Church, 403 Church Street, Walterboro, SC 29488.

The family expresses appreciation for the love and support of its friends. With a wonderful sense of Humor, and original even in death, Jack will be lovingly remembered by those who knew him best as a big fish in a small pond.

Ruth Wike Miller

COLUMBIA — Services for Ruth Wike Miller, 76, of Columbia, will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, May 2, 2005 in the Chapel of Thompson Funeral Home of West Columbia, officiated by Rev. Dr. Donald F. West. Burial will follow at Southland Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Epworth Children’s Home, 2900 Millwood Avenue, Columbia, SC 29205.

Mrs. Miller, widow of Homer Kenneth Miller, died Tuesday, April 26, 2005. Born in Shelton, SC, she was a daughter of the late Gleason D. and Jessie “Sweet” Dickerson Wike. Mrs. Miller was a member of Broadacres Baptist Church and graduated in 1946 from Brookland Cayce High School.

Surviving are her two sisters, Ann Crout and Iris Williamson, both of West Columbia; five nieces; three great-nieces; three great-nephews; and loving aunt, Mollie Dickerson.

Robert Russell Hurst Sr.

BAMBERG — Robert Russell Hurst, Sr., 89, of 56 Phoenix Court Bamberg, SC 29003, widower of Lorell L. Hurst, died April 29, 2005 in Bamberg County Hospital. He was born August 28, 1915 to the late David Hurst and Elizabeth Bauer Hurst. He was a member of Episcopal Christ Church in Denmark.

He served in World War II as a Naval Officer aboard the USS Savannah and the USS Ticonderoga in actions in the Mediterranean and Pacific Theatres. During this service he became close friends with Frank “Ziggy” Hartzog, of Bamberg. After the War, he completed his Law Degree from Harvard and established a Private Law Firm on Long Island, New York. He later added the management of a Family Business, Pheonix Specialty MFG. Co., to his duties. In 1966, because of his friendship in and love of Bamberg, He established Phoenix Southern Washer & Gasket in Bamberg. In 1976, he consolidated the two companies and moved the entire operation to Bamberg. He served as Chairman of the Board until 2002.

His personal activities were golf and fishing.

Memorial Service will be 11:00 A.M. 05-02-05 Monday at Episcopal Christ Church in Denmark, SC. Rev,. Byron Tyndall officiating.

Survivors: 2 Daughters; Lorelle H. & Harry Wise & Pamela H. & Ray Squires of Bamberg, SC; 1 Son, Robert R. & Cindy Hurst Jr. of Denmark, SC; Granddaughters: Meredith Tuck, Rebecca Squires, Lorelle Baddley, & Caroline Stanley; Grandsons: R. Russell Hurst III, Michael Hurst, & Daniel Hurst; Great-Granddaughters: Eleanor & Julia Baddley, & Eliza Stanley; Great-Grandsons: Wyatt Stanley, & Clayton Braddley, and his life time pet Ashley.

Visitation will be May 1, 2005 Sunday at the home of Robert Hurst Sr. from 6-8pm.
