John Adair Purcell

HILTON HEAD ISLAND — John Adair Purcell, 71, of Hilton Head Island, died Thursday, April 28, 2005 at the Fraser Health Center.

He was born February 14, 1934 in Washington , D.C., son of John Adair and Rebecca Trapnell Purcell.

Mr. Purcell graduated from West Virginia University with a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration. He retired from Westinghouse in Columbia, South Carolina and moved to Hilton Head Island.

He is survived by his wife, Jean of Hilton Head Island; a son, Michael Purcell of Columbia, SC and daughter, Suzanne Dempsey of North Carolina; his step children, Judith McFall of Mooresville, NC and Henry McFall of Greenville, SC and 4 grandchildren.

Services will be held at Zion Episcopal Church in Charles Town, West Virginia at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Care of the Lowercountry, 20 Palmetto Parkway, Suite 104, Hilton Head Island, SC 29926.

The Island Funeral Home and Cremation is in charge of arrangements.

Olin Morris

NEWBERRY — Olin Robert Morris, 70, of 1926 Benedict St., Newberry, SC, died Friday, April 29, 2005 at the Newberry County Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Morris was born on January 11, 1935 in Newberry, the son of the late Olin Simpson and Dollie Turner Morris. He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War and he was a retired employee of the Independent Life Insurance Co. and of Cornwell Tools, Inc. He was a member of Summer Memorial Lutheran Church, the Newberry Moose Lodge #2211, and the Columbus, Indiana Knights of Pythias.

Mr. Morris is survived by his wife, Helen Dominick Morris of the home; four daughters and sons-in-law, Ethel and Bill Stillabower of Columbus, IN, Julie and Robert Pell of Columbia, and Joni and Darrell Smith and Denise and Steve Pittman all of Lexington; two sisters, Sarah Powell of Newberry and Barbara McAbee of Greenville; and six grandchildren, Amanda Smith, Staci Smith, Kayla Pittman and Morgan Pittman all of Lexington and Kaitlin Pell and Austin Pell both of Columbia.

Funeral services will be conducted at 4:00 P.M. Monday at the Whitaker Funeral Home by the Rev. Mark Bredholt and the Rev. John Weaver. Interment will be in Newberry Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will from 3:00 to 4:30 P.M. Sunday at the Whitaker Funeral Home and the family will be at the residence 1926 Benedict St.

Memorials may be sent to Summer Memorial Lutheran Church, PO Box 131, Newberry SC 29108 or to the American Lung Association, 1817 Gadsden St., Columbia SC 29201.

Whitaker Funeral Home, 1704 College Street, Newberry, is assisting the family.

Norma Holley Strohminger

SURFSIDE BEACH — Funeral services for Norma C. Holley Strohminger, 70, of Surfside Beach, S.C. and formerly of Kershaw, S.C. will be held at 2:00 pm Wednesday, May 4, 2005 from Kershaw Second Baptist Church, Kershaw, S.C. Entombment will follow in the Kershaw City Cemetery. The Revs. Dr. Eugene Rollins and Keith Hinson will officiate.

Mrs. Strohminger died Friday, April 29, 2005. Born in Kershaw, S.C., she was the daughter of Sarah Elizabeth (Tina) Holley and the late Clyde G. Holley. She was a member of Liberty Hill Presbyterian Church, where she served in many capacities. She was a cosmetologist, a loving wife and mother.

Surviving are her mother of Kershaw; her husband, Henry Strohminger, of Surfside Beach, S.C.; her children, Randy Young, of Kershaw, S.C., Patti Smith, and her husband Paul, of Kershaw, S.C., Rusty Hayes, and his wife, Cheryl, of Kershaw, S.C., Tina Hayes Catoe, and her husband Bill, of Camden, S.C., Kelley Truesdale, of Kershaw, S.C., Michael Hayes, of Kershaw, S.C., Henry Strohminger, III, of Towson, Maryland, and Karl T. Strohminger, and his wife Rosemary, of Charlotte, N.C.; 20 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; her sisters, Joanne Neal, and her husband Charles, of Lancaster, S.C., Betty Sue Sowell, and her husband, Wendell, of Kershaw, and Sheila H. Hinson, of Kershaw, S.C. She was predeceased by a granddaughter, Holley Elizabeth Smith.

Memorials in her memory may be made to the Liberty Hill Presbyterian Church, Post Office Box 170 Liberty Hill, South Carolina 29074.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, May 3, 2005 from 6 to 8 pm at Baker Funeral Home, 210 E. Hilton Street, Kershaw, S.C. 29067 (803) 475 3771 and other times at the home of her daughter, 212 East Church Street, Kershaw, S.C.

Baker Funeral Home is caring for the Stohminger family.

Vida Collins Dantzler

BOWMAN — Mrs. Vida Collins Dantzler, 78 of 7110 Vance Road, Bowman, died Saturday April 30, 2005 in The Methodist Oaks, Orangeburg. Funeral Services will be held 2 p.m. Monday at the Wightman United Methodist Church with Rev. Larry Watson officiating, burial will follow in the Bowman Memorial Cemetery. Pallbearers will be William (Skee) Dantzler II, Jerry Looper II, Robert Sikes, Scott Sikes, PFC Travis Price USMC, Frankie Peagler, and Tripp Looper. Casket will be placed in Church at 1 p.m.

Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday evening at Bryant Funeral Home, 607 North Parler Avenue, St. George, SC and other times at her home.

Mrs. Dantzler was born in Dorange Community near Branchville on July 27, 1926 a daughter of the late Claffy Wesley and Julia Wimberly Collins and step-mother, Marie Wimberly Collins. She was the widow of William Dupree Dantzler. A former seamstress at Bo-Car and Branchville Shirt Factory she and her husband were owners of Dantzler’s Exxon Service Station. A graduate of Branchville High School, she attended Orangeburg Hospital School of Nursing and was a member of Wightman United Methodist Church.

Surviving are her son and his wife, William Douglas and Brenda Dantzler, Branchville, daughters and their husbands, Donna and Jerry Looper, Bowman, Dale and Orin Price, Gilbert, Faye and Buddy Sikes, St. Matthews, Kaye and David Peagler, Bowman, Brothers; L.C. Collins, of Reevesville; Wallace Collins and Harry Collins, of Branchville; David Collins, Hanahan; Phil Collins, Aiken; sisters, Dolly C. Metts, Branchville and Vianna C. Snelgrove, Rowesville; sisters in law, Frances Gates, and Helen Smith, of Bowman; Eleven Grandchildren, William (Skee) Dantzler II, Simmie Dantzler, Jerry Looper II, Kristen Wimberly, Wendy Corley, Tanya Quattlebaum, Travis Price, Robert Sikes, Scott Sikes, Tara Lawrimore, and Frankie Peagler; Ten great-grandchildren; Tripp Looper, Jarrett Looper, Jonathan Looper, Callie Stokes, Hunter Wimberly, Katie Wimberly, Laiken Corley, Dustin Corley, Zackery Oswald and Elijah Quattlebaum.

Memorials may be made to Wightman United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 187, Bowman, SC 29018 or Hospice of TRMC, 1324 Hutto Street, Orangeburg, SC 29118 or to a charity of one’s choice.

Dora Fay Kline

COLUMBIA — Graveside service for Dora Fay C. “Tillie” Kline, 90, will be held Monday at 12 o’clock noon in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Chaplain Donna C. Peele will officiate. The family will be at the residence. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.

Mrs. Kline died Saturday, April 30, 2005, at her home after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Born in Savannah, Ga. on February 16, 1915, she was the daughter of the late George C. and Una W. Colbert. She was first married to the late Kenneth Lee Wilson and then for forty-two years to the late Norman M. Kline.

Mrs. Kline was a lifelong advocate for all of God’s creatures, loved her yard and gardening until her illness rendered her unable to tend to her flowers. She was thrilled to sing a hymn to anyone who would listen. Prior to her illness, she was also an avid Gamecock and Atlanta Braves baseball fan.

Mrs. Kline is survived by her only child, Becky Wilson, and her fiance, Richard W. Hasty of Columbia; nephews, Linwood C. Hicks of West Columbia, Paul W. Hicks of Lexington, Bobby Kline of Ladson and Harry Kline of Camden; nieces, Harriett Wilson and Fagia Schmitt, both of Charlotte, N.C.; and her little dog, Bambi.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Palmetto Chapter, P.O. Box 7044, Columbia, S.C. 29202; Senior Resources, Inc. Senior Companion Program, 2817 Millwood Avenue, Columbia, S.C. 29205; Lutheran Hospice of the Midlands, 1505 Blanding Street, Columbia, S.C. 29201; or a charity of one’s choice.

Mrs. Kline’s daughter would like to express heartfelt gratitude to Dr. William Robinson and his staff for their compassionate care for many years; Latisha Jamison, special caregiver whose care of Dora was a labor of love; Lutheran Hospice, especially Karen Irving and Catrina Palmer, who were so giving of their time and their hearts; and special friends whose kindnesses and compassion has no equal.

Bea R. Strickland

SMITHFIELD N.C. — Mrs. Bea Ray Strickland, 96, of 902 Berkshire Road, died Friday, April 29, 2005, in Smithfield Manor.

Mrs. Strickland was born in Linden, Oct. 19, 1908, to the late William Edward and Mary Eliza Adams Honeycutt. She was a longtime member of Edgerton Memorial United Methodist Church in Selma. She was a former member of the Willing Workers Sunday school class, the Selma Woman’s Club and the Selma Garden Club.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in Edgerton Memorial United Methodist Church in Selma with the Revs. Butch Huffman and Megan Matthews officiating. A private burial will be held at a later date.

The family will receive friends Monday after the memorial service at the church in the fellowship hall. Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home of Fayetteville.

Mrs. Strickland was preceded in death by her loving husbands, Robert Lee Ray and Clarence Edward Strickland. She is survived by daughter, Bobbie Ray Herring of Smithfield and was preceded in death by daughter, the late Mary Bea Ray Trogdon of Columbia, S.C.; a brother, Charlie B. Honeycutt of Fayetteville; three sisters, Lyncie H. Munns of Raleigh, Penny H. Nichols of Columbus, Ohio and Ruby H. Pearsall of Fayetteville; five grandchildren, Charisse H. Martin of Bainbrdige, Ga., Beth H. Chadwick of Wilmington, Ken Herring Jr. of Fayetteville, Ken Trogdon and Amy T. Andrews, both of Blythewood, S.C.; 11 great-grandchildren, Lauren Powell, Amy Powell, Lauren Chadwick, George Chadwick, Trey Herring, Caroline Herring, Laykin Fowler, McKenna Trogdon, Ashlan Andrews, Meghan Andrews and Madison Andrews. A great-grandson, Preston Andrews, of Blythewood preceded her in death.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Bea Ray Strickland Memorial Fund, c/0 Edgerton Memorial United Methodist Church, 401 W. Anderson St., Selma, NC 27576; or Centenary United Methodist Chruch, 140 E. Market St., Smithfield, NC 27577.

Arrangements are being handled by Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home of Fayetteville.

Ruby Avant

GEORGETOWN — Mae Randall Avant, 77, died Friday, April 29, 2005, at Georgetown Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Avant was born in Chester on January 15, 1928, a daughter of the late Vernon Randall and Gertie Bruce Randall. She moved to Georgetown in 1945. Mrs. Avant retired from Oneita Industries and was a former employee of Georgetown Dress Plant. She was an active member of First Assembly of God, Women Ministries, and the Open Bible Class. She was the widow of Wilson B. Avant.

Surviving are: a son, Larry B. Avant of Georgetown; a daughter, Brenda A. Foxworth of Georgetown; a sister, Shirley Morrison of Clover; a brother, Frank Reynolds of Rock Hill; four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Monday morning, May 2, 2005, at eleven o’clock in First Assembly of God. Officiating will be the Rev. Dr. Dr. C. Bradley Morris. Burial will follow in Pennyroyal Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends at First Assembly of God Sunday evening, May 1, 2005, from six until eight o’clock.

The family suggests memorials to First Assembly of God, P. O. Box 1627, Georgetown, S. C. 29442.

John Busby

LENA — Services for John Holman Busby are 2 p.m. at St. James Apostolic Faith Holiness Church, Estill, with burial in Cypress Creek Cemetery, Pineland. Garvin and Garvin Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Hampton Co. to John Busby and Irene Foster, he died April 26, 2005. Surviving are wife, Louretta Busby; children, Sharon Lewis, Sylvester, Robert, Pamela Busby, Johnnie Ingram; three siblings; others.

Ruth Bowers

NEWBERRY — Services for Ruth Carolyn Bowers are 3 p.m. Tuesday at Providence AME Church with burial in Stonewall Holiness Church Cemetery. F.B. Pratt & Son Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Lexington Co. to Emory and Luvenia Mayers Bowers, she died April 27, 2005. Surviving are husband, Oscar Bowers; children, Rudolph Sr., Randolph, Salisa Bowers, Sophia Clark; 10 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild; 1 brother.

Evelyn J. Schmidt

SANDY RUN — A memorial service for Evelyn J. Schmidt, 54, will be 5 p.m. June 4, 2005, at Souls Harbor Church, West Columbia. Born in Annapolis, Md., to Nelson and Betty Johns, she died April 23, 2005. Surviving: her mother; husband, Wilbur “Bill” Schmidt; sister, Linda Rivenbark; son, Donald Greenway Jr.; grandson, Brad Baughman. Memorials to: Tri-County Hospice. “She is now at peace with her Lord.”
