Carrie Strong

COLUMBIA — Services for Carrie Hayes Strong will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday in the Bethlehem Baptist Church, 1028 Eastman Street, Columbia with burial in the church’s cemetery. Visitation will be held this evening beginning at 7:00 p.m. Leevy’s Funeral Home, Taylor Street Chapel is in charge. Surviving are her niece, Charlene Gordon; nephew, Nathaniel Hayes; stepdaughter, Bertha Strong; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Elizabeth Huey

BENNETTSVILLE — Services for Elizabeth Howell Huey, 79, are 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church, where she was a member. Visitation is at 1009 Wells St. Whitner-Evans Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Marlboro Co. to John and Elizabeth Tartt Howell, she died April 30, 2005. Surviving: husband, Chalmers Huey Sr.; children, Chammie Huey, Susie Anderson, Donna Moore; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

Betty Jo E. Griffis

EDGEFIELD — Mrs. Betty Jo Eubanks Griffis, 64, of Youngblood Rd. died Saturday 4-30-05 at University Hospital.

Graveside Services will be held Monday 5-2-2005 at 11 A.M. Eastview Cemetery in Edgefield.

Mrs. Griffis was of the Baptist Faith and was a Homemaker.

Survivors include her husband Hubey Griffis, Jr., 1 Daughter-Kathy G. Carroll, Greenwood, S.C., 1 Son-Hugh W. Griffis, Corpus Christi, Tex., 1 Sister-Pam E. Murrell, Edgefield. 1 Grandson William Carroll.

The family is at the home and will receive friends Sunday from 5 to 7 P.M. at Edgefield Mercantile Funeral Home.

Mamie Segars Curry

HARTSVILLE — Funeral services for Mamie Segars Curry, 56, will be held at 3:00 p.m. Monday, May 2, 2005 at Kelleytown Baptist Church. The Revs. Gary Anderson and Judson Segars will officiate with burial in the church cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Monday following the service in the Family Life Center. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia SC 29210.

Mrs. Curry died Thursday, April 28, 2005. Born in Hartsville, SC, she was a daughter of Mamie Lawton Segars and the late Gosnold Graham Segars. She was a graduate of Anderson Junior College and Massey Institute of Design in Atlanta, GA, and spent 35 years in the interior design business. She was a member of Vail Bible Church.

Surviving are her husband, James Curry of Edwards, CO; son, Jay Curry of Eagle-Vail, CO; daughter and son-in-law, Kellie and John Ricca of Eagle-Vail, CO; mother of Hartsville, SC; brothers and sisters-in-law, Goz and Pat Segars, Bill and Debbie Segars, all of Hartsville, SC; grandchildren, Cordry Ricca, Claire Ricca, Marilyn Ricca. She was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Madeline Ricca.

William Sachs

COLUMBIA — William Ferguson Sachs, 76, husband of Lillian Lindsay Sachs died Saturday April 30, 2005 at Palmetto Baptist Medical Center in Columbia after a long illness.

Born October 6, 1928 in Bethlehem, PA. he was a son of the late Evelyn Gracely Sachs and Edward Julius Sachs.

Mr. Sachs attended Valley Forge Military Academy in Wayne, PA. where he later served as Chairman of the Board of Visitors. He graduated from the Citadel in 1951 where he was a very active alumnus, having served as President of the Association of Citadel Men and The Citadel Brigadier Foundation.

He served in the Korean War in the Twenty-Fifth Infantry Division, 14th Regiment, and was awarded the Combat Infantry Man’s Badge and the Bronze Star.

He went to work for Home Finance Company in Charlotte N.C. in 1954 moved to Columbia in 1963. In 1973 he founded First Financial Corporation, where he was Chairman and President until recently.

Mr. Sachs was the past President and Director of the South Carolina Financial Services Association. He was a past Director and staff member of the University of Colorado National Installment Banking School. He was a member of the committee of several men who first brought Young Life to Columbia.

Mr. Sachs was currently serving on the South Carolina State Board of Financial Institutions, having been appointed by three Governors.

He was a summer resident of Blowing Rock N.C. for many years. He was a member of the Palmetto Club, Capital City Club, Blowing Rock Country Club and St. John’s Episcopal Church.

Bill Sachs was a man of great energy and enthusiasm and it showed in every aspect of his life. He flew his own plane up until this recent illness.

Surviving are his wife of 51 years of Columbia; one daughter Lindsay Sachs Long and husband Ernest B. Long of Charleston; one son Richard E. Sachs of Columbia; four grandchildren, William F. Sachs III of Columbia, Lilly Sachs of Blowing Rock N.C., Elizabeth Long and Bethea Long of Charleston and a step-granddaughter Caroline Long Parnell.

He was preceded in death by a son William F. (Billy) Sachs Jr. and a brother Edward Sachs Jr.

Funeral Services will be held at 12:00 Noon Monday at St. John’s Episcopal Church on Wheat St. in Columbia with the Reverend Fletcher Montgomery officiating.

Burial will follow in the Elmwood Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will be Charles McCreight, Everett Gasque, Barnes Boyle Jr., Dr. James Weston, C. Edward Williams, Frank Wooten, Gen. D.E. Rosenblum, Charles Fonville, Harold Shokes, Hampton Walker.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 P.M. Sunday at the home, 1412 Kathwod Dr.

Memorials may be made to the William F. Sachs Memorial Fund, Brigadier Foundation, The Citadel 171 Moultrie St. Charleston 29409 or to St. John’s Episcopal Church, 2827 Wheat St. Columbia 29205 or to New Directions International Ministries, P.O. Box 2347 Burlington N.C. 27216.

Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory, 221 Broad St., Sumter, S.C. (803) 775-9386 is in charge of the arrangements.

Dick Thompson

FLORENCE — Richard L. Thompson, Jr. died Saturday April 30, 2005, in McLeod Hospital after a short illness.

Funeral services will be Monday, May 2, 2005, at 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Layton-Anderson Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Florence Memorial Gardens.

Born in Saluda, North Carolina he was the son of the late Richard Luther and Atlas Johnson Thompson. He was married to the late Doris Ashley Thompson for 52 years. Mr. Thompson was employed with Southeastern Freight Lines as a Regional Manager until his retirement in 1996. He was a member of Westminister Presbyterian Church where he served in various capacities including Sunday School Superintendent, Deacon and Elder.

Surviving are a son: Steve Thompson (Lindy), Florence; a daughter, Penny Benkeser (Fiance Danny Cox) Charlotte, NC; a sister, Betty Anna Thompson Brown (Joe) Saluda, NC and two grandchildren, Justin Thompson and Hannah Benkeser.

The family will receive family and friends prior to the funeral service from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Layton-Anderson Funeral Home, 4210 Palmetto Street, Florence is assisting the family with arrangements.

Nell Blackwell

ABBEVILLE — Services for Ophelia “Nell” Carroll Blackwell, 74, are 2 p.m. Wednesday (visitation 6-8 p.m. Tuesday) at Chandler-Jackson Funeral Home; burial in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens. Born in Clover to Amos and Minnie Carroll, she died April 30, 2005. Surviving: husband, Rev. James Blackwell; sons, Rev. James, Phillip, Kenneth Blackwell; siblings, Sybil, Evelyn, Doris, Mozelle, Carroll; 5 grandchildren.

Carole Hunter

HARTSVILLE — Funeral services for Carole Jan Hunter, age 62, who died April 30, will be held Tuesday at 2:00 pm from the Chapel Norton Funeral Home. Dr. Bob Cline & Dr. Richard Bailey and Rev. Allen Hunter Sr. will officiate. Visitation will be Monday 6-8 pm at the Funeral Home.

Mrs. Hunter was born in Columbus, Ga. on Dec. 31, 1942, a daughter of the late Blanche Jackson & Margaret Savage Thames. She retired from Sonoco Products Co. in April 1991, was a member of the Women Of The Moose in Hartsville, and a member of the First Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband: Allen M. Hunter, Sr., Hartsville; Son & daughter in law: Allen & Laurie Hunter, Jr., Florence, S.C.; daughter: Debra Jan Munn, Hartsville; 2 granddaughters: Courtney Lynn James, Hartsville; Katie Ann Hunter, Florence; Sister: Sandy L. Thames, Memphis, Tenn., Sister in law: Sandra Thames and her daughter: Alexis, Hewlett, N.Y. and 4 brothers in law: Paul, Gene, Rhen & George Hunter, Jr., Hartsville. She was preceded in death by a brother Danny Thames.

Memorials may be made to the American Diabetic Association or American Heart Association.

Hubert S. Roberts

CINCINNATI, OHIO — Roberts, Hubert S. “Hu,” beloved husband of Nita C. Roberts, devoted father of Donna (Jim) Roberts and Kathy (Trent) Goetz, dear grandfather of Jessica Roberts and Wyatt Goetz, brother of Cynthia (Fred) Douglas, Wednesday, April 27, 2005. Friends may call from 4-6 p.m. Sunday at Strawser Funeral Home, 9503 Kenwood Road, Blue Ash. Funeral service is noon Monday at the funeral home. Ellen Louise Merecka

LEXINGTON — Services for Ellen Louise Merecka, 30, will be held Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. at Celestial Memorial Gardens Chapel with the Rev. Bill Howard officiating. Burial will follow in Celestial Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Barr-Price Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel.

Ms. Merecka died Saturday, April 30, 2005. Born in Wheeling, West Virginia on November 7, 1974 a daughter of Franklin D. Merecka and the late Dessie Kathern Merecka.

Surviving are her father, Franklin D. Merecka; sisters, Erica B. Merecka of Lexington, Erin R. Frazier of Monetta, and grandparents, Trellis and Peggy Player of Lexington.

Ronnie O’Neal Smith

WEST COLUMBIA — Mr. Ronnie O’Neal Smith, age 51, of 180 Glenn Road died Sunday, May 1, 2005.

Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 3, 2005 at Ebenezer United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Smith was born in Pelion a son of Lorene Smith Hayden and the late Carlton P. Hayden. He was a retired carpenter.

Survivors include his wife: Charlotte Rimmer Smith of W. Columbia; daughters: Dianne L. Smith and Sheila Northcutt, both of Pelion; son: Bobby Campbell of Pelion; his mother of West Columbia; sisters: Marlene Spradley and Patty Keeler, both of Lexington, Marilyn Hayden and Debbie Hayden, both West Columbia and Carolyn McElveen of Gaston; 3 grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

The family is at the home and will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday, May 2, 2005 at Culler-McAlhany Funeral Home in North.

Elsie Mae Carpenter

WEST COLUMBIA — Elsie Mae Collison Carpenter, 97, died Saturday. Barr-Price Funeral Home Lexington Chapel is assisting the family.

Born in Jamaica, NY a daughter of the late Ellsworth and Prisella Mills Collison, a retired secretary and was married to the late Edward A. Carpenter.

Surviving are daughters, Mae Mocase of Lexington; Della Feldeisen of Brant Lake, NY; 6 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
