Bernice Powell

COLUMBIA — Graveside service for Lucy Bernice Powell, 81, will be held Monday at 2 p.m. in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Augusta, Ga. Visitation will be Sunday 4-6 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Gervais Street Chapel. Hatcher, Chance & Hydrick Funeral Home, Augusta, is in charge in Augusta.

Miss Powell died Saturday, November 06, 2004. Born in Augusta, Ga., she was a daughter of the late Grover Cleve Powell and Emmie Mary Sullivan Powell. She was first employed with Calwell’s Cafeteria and later became a co-owner of the Friendly Cafeteria on Main Street. Retired from the Baptist Hospital, she was also a private duty caregiver. For eleven years prior to her death, she worked in the reception area of Richland Fashion Mall.

Mrs. Powell was an active member of Park Street Baptist Church. She enjoyed baking, needlepoint and crocheting. A loving caregiver to family and friends, she was loved by many.

Surviving are sisters: Ola P. Banks of Augusta, Ga. and Margie P. Sexton and her husband, Clyde, of Tampa, Fla.; brother and sister-in-law, Ralph C. and Mary C. Powell of Augusta, Ga.; caregiver and niece, Kathy Timms of Winnsboro; nieces and nephews; dear friend, Barbara Brown; and loving pet dachsund, “Lil Doc”. She was predeceased by sisters, Ellen P. Moore and Mary P. Hayes and brothers, Allen Powell and Edward “Ed” Powell.

Rebecca Roberts

ORANGEBURG — Rebecca “Becky” Lasley Roberts, 45, died at her residence.

Graveside services will be 1:00 P.M. Monday with the Rev. Dr. Terry Poole officiating. Burial will be in Crestlawn Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be 3:00-5:00 P.M. Sunday at Thompson Funeral Home in Orangeburg. Memorials to Hospice of The Regional Medical Center, 1324 Hutto Street, Orangeburg, S.C. 29118.

Cole Sawyer

COLUMBIA — Service for Robert Cole Sawyer, 11, will be held Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Northeast Presbyterian Church with burial in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Northeast Presbyterian Church, 601 Polo Road, Columbia, S.C. 29223 or to Camp Kemo, 7 Richland Medical Park, Suite 203, Columbia, S.C. 29203. Visitation will be Monday 5-7 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel.

Cole died Saturday, November 6, 2004. Born in Durham, N.C., he was the son of Scott Clifford and Stacy Ramsey Sawyer. He attended Windsor Elementary School and enjoyed soccer, swimming, skateboarding and surfing. He was an avid Gamecock fan.

Cole was recognized for his courage in his battle with cancer by numerous organizations. He was a member of Northeast Presbyterian Church where he was active in Promiseland Sunday School Class.

Surviving are his parents of Columbia; sisters, Kelsey Gail Sawyer and Laurel Ann Sawyer, of the home; maternal grandparents, Bob and Toni Ramsey of Greenville; paternal grandparents, Roy and Ann Sawyer of Columbia; aunts and uncles, John and Stephanie Stephenson, Val and Betsy Sawyer, Paul and Phyllis Trippe and Mike and Sharon Sawyer; and numerous cousins.

Nakayla Smith

YORK — A graveside service for Nakayla Chantrice Smith, 6 days old, will be held at 3 p.m. today in White Hill AMEZ Church Cemetery. Wright Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Charlotte, N.C., to Kimberly L. Smith, she died Nov. 5, 2004. Surviving are mother; grandparents, Ernest and Gaylon Cherry.

Covie Suits

GREENWOOD — Services for Walter Covie Suits, 76, 2 p.m. Monday (viewing 1 p.m.) at Durst Ave. Church of God; burial with military rites in Greenwood Memorial Gardens; visitation 7-9 tonight at Blyth Funeral Home. Born in Newberry Co. to William and R’lecce Suits, he died Nov. 5, 2004. Surviving: wife, Helen Suits; children, Danny, Diane, Dana Suits, Denise Able, Debbie Lee; brother, Bobby; 9 grandchildren.

Connie Tankersley

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. — Connie Tankersley age 87 of Lawrenceville, formerly of Cayce, SC, died Saturday November 6, 2004. A celebration of life service for Connie Tankersley will be held 1 PM Monday November 8, 2004 at Cayce United Methodist Church, Cayce, SC. Rev. Michael Henderson & Rev. Megan Stone will officiate. Burial & Eastern Star Rites at Southland Memorial Gardens. Greeting & Visitation of Family & Friends will be held in the fellowship hall from 11:30AM-1PM. Ms. Tankersley, widow of the late Lewis C. Tankersley, Sr. was born in Oconee, GA and was the daughter of the late Henry R. & Rose L. Tompkins. She retired from General Electric and was an active member of Edenwood Garden Club, W. Columbia/Cayce Women’s Club, Eastern Star & Allie Neams Circle. Surviving are her Son & Daughter-in-law: Lewis & Barbara Tankersley; 2 Granddaughters: Erin K. Tankersley & Lauren E. Tankersley, all of Lawrenceville, GA. Tim Stewart Funeral Home, Lawrenceville, GA. 770-926-3100.

Merwyn Woodbrey

COLUMBIA — Graveside service with military honors for Merwyn Francis Woodbrey, 83, will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in Florence National Cemetery, Florence. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is in charge.

Mr. Woodbrey died Wednesday, November 3, 2004. Born in Buxton, Maine, he was a son of the late Amos and Essie White Woodbrey. An Army veteran of WW II, he was a retired firefighter with the City of Columbia.

Surviving are daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Jesse Rabon of Columbia; son, Gary Woodbrey of Cedar Creek; step-daughter, Shirley Braxton of West Columbia; grandchildren: Mark Wilson and his wife, Linda; Malachi Wilson; Junior Wilson; Sharon Cason and her companion, David Parrish; Heather Woodbrey; and Charity Woodbrey; and fourteen great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a number of brothers and sisters.

YORK — Services for William “Billy” Forrest Martin Sr., 67, are 2 p.m. Monday at Smyrna Baptist Church, Smyrna; burial in Lakeview Memory Gardens; visitation 4-6 p.m. today at Bratton Funeral Home. Born in York Co. to William and Louise Martin, he died Nov. 4, 2004. Surviving: ex-wife, Shirley Carroll; mother; children, Donavan, Whitney, Eddie, William Jr. Martin, Sherry Childers, Lisa Bostic; 7 siblings; 13 grandchildren.

Mary Riggins

KINGSTREE — Services for Mary Lee Cokley Riggins, 68, widow of Isaac Riggins, were Saturday at Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church; burial in Rockyford Cemetery, Salters. Redmond-Richardson Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Salters to Herbert and Agnes Brown Cokley, she died Nov. 3, 2004. Surviving are children, Jimmy, Willie Riggins, Verdell Cain, Janie Montgomery; five siblings; 14 grands; others.

Willie Ruth Washington

ALLENDALE — Services for Willie Ruth Dopson Washington , 59, will be held at 3 p.m. today at Magdalene Christian Church with burial in St. Paul Church Cemetery. Cave Funeral Service is in charge. Born to Ellie and Irene Chess Dopson, she died Nov. 2, 2004. Surviving are daughters, Mildred Crespy, Angela McIntosh; son, Tyrone Washington ; sister, Dorothy Waldin; brother, Ellie Dopson Jr.; four grandchildren.

Born to Charlie and Ruby Couch, he died Nov. 5, 2004. Born to the Rev. Walter and Carrie Crawford, she died November 4, 2004. Surviving are brother, U.F. Crawford; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews.

Born in Williamsburg Co. to Emmanuel and Mary Montgomery, he died Nov. 2, 2004. Surviving are mother; siblings, Levern, Jennifer Fulton, Emmanuel Montgomery, Hazel Gadson; two stepbrothers; one stepsister; others.

Sampson Diggs

SUMTER — Services and burial for Sampson “Peter” Diggs, 55, are 2 p.m. (viewing 1 p.m.) Monday at Rafting Creek Baptist Church, Rembert. Williams Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Sumter Co. to June and Mary Moody, he died Oct. 31, 2004. Surviving: devoted friend, Rosa Green; children, Peter, Sampson, Doug, Amos, Monet Green, Melvenia, Tamika Diggs, Linda Wade; seven siblings; 11 grandchildren.

Irene Berry

St. GEORGE — Irene Judy Berry, 95, of 9182 Charleston Hwy. died Friday evening at her residence.

Funeral services will be held 2 P.M. Monday at Reevesville Baptist Church with Rev. Joey Branch, Rev. Delbert Thigpin and Rev. Bob Lee officiating, the burial follow at the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 P.M. Sunday at Bryant Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be: David Berry, Johnathon Jackson, Ricky Judy, Bert Judy, Bobby Joe Chinners, Ted Strickland, Maxwell Bair and Kenneth Jackson. She was predeceased by 2 Sons, John Allen Berry and Oscar L. Berry, Jr.: by a grandchild Samuel Huff and by a great grand Samatha Infinger.

Irene J. Berry was born July 9, 1909 in Reevesville, SC a daughter of the late Perry B. Judy and Maude Bruce Judy. She was a member of Reevesville Baptist Church, the Ruth Sunday School Class, XYZ Senior Club and was a member of the WMU Missionary.

Surviving are: a Son: Bennnet (Jean) Berry and a daughter Martha B. (Buddy) Huff both of St. George a daughter in law, Myrtle Jean Berry of West Columbia; 7 Grandchildren: Johnell (Kenneth) Jackson, William and Russell Huff, Sarah (Vernon) Sease, David Allen (Sherry) Berry, Maude Waggoner and Phyllis (Allen) Shuler. 11 Great Grandchildren: Renee, Johnathon, Candice, Kristi, Santana, Amber, Beth, Chris, Allen, Nicole, Nicholas and 1 Great Great Grandchild, Kyle.

Memorials are suggested to Hospice of TRMC, 1324 Hutto St., Orangeburg, SC 29116 and or Reevesville Baptist Church, 400 Rigby St, Reevesville, SC 29471.
