Job’s Mortuary is in charge. Born in Sumter to Sam and Rebecca McCray, he died May 3, 2005. Surviving: children, Rosa Anthony, James McFadden; 20 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; 21 great-great-grandchildren.

Elizabeth Priester Brown

ALLENDALE — Services for Elizabeth Priester Brown, 90, widow of Richard Brown Sr., 2 p.m. today at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, burial in Hoover Cemetery, Cave Funeral Service in charge. Born to Clarence Sr. and Lucy Priester, she died April 29, 2005. Surviving: children, Helen Green, Bernice Dorch, Eva Jolly, Margaret Riley, Jeannette, Richard Jr., Willie, Jerry Brown; 2 siblings; grandchild, great, great-great-grandchildren.

LYNCHBURG — Services for Jerome Epps, 59, widower of Jessie Lee Epps, are 11 a.m. Saturday (viewing 10 a.m.) at Asbury United Methodist Church, burial in Goodman Cemetery. Job’s Mortuary, Sumter, is in charge. Born in Sumter to John and Elease Ludd Epps, he died May 2, 2005. Surviving: sons, Patrick and Rodney Epps; six sisters; four brothers; 11 grandchildren; great-grandchild; aunt; nieces, nephews.

Eugene Way

WEST COLUMBIA — Services with burial for Eugene “Little Boy” Way, 60, will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Platt Springs Baptist Church, visitation 2-8 p.m. today (wake 7-8 p.m.) at Pearson’s Funeral Home, Columbia. Born in Lexington Co. to Alberta Coleman and Joshua Way, he died May 3, 2005. Surviving: wife, Ganell Way; daughters, Cindy Curry, Karen Berry, 1st Lt. Carey Way; 6 sisters 3 brothers; 9 grandchildren.

Mary Carter

NEWBERRY — Mary Ellen McLaurin Carter, 88, of 655 Mendenhall Road, Newberry, died Friday, May 6, 2005, in Newberry County Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Carter was born April 25, 1917, in Bethune, SC, a daughter of the late A.B. and Daisy McDonald McLaurin. She was a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church. She graduated from Flora McDonald College and was a teacher for the United States military in Japan, Germany and Panama. She also taught in public schools in California, Connecticut and South Carolina.

In 1959 she married the late W.C. “Billy” Carter of Newberry. Since then she and her husband were the principals of Carter and Holmes Orchids along with Owen and Raye Holmes. They were both very active in supporting education and the arts in Newberry.

Mrs. Carter is survived by one brother and his wife, John D. and Dot McLaurin of Bethune and four nieces, Louise McLaurin-Hahn, Marjorie Cason, Ellen Smith and Mary Anne McLaurin Norwood. She is also survived by her husband’s cousins, Joe Summer of Charlotte, NC, who was raised in the Carter home and Owen Holmes and his wife Raye Holmes and their son, Mac Holmes, all of Newberry. Besides her husband and parents, she was predeceased by her brother, Alexander B. McLaurin, Jr. and her sister, Lorena Troeger.

Funeral services for Mary Ellen McLaurin Carter will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 8 at Ebenezer United Methodist Church. Interment will in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 7 at Whitaker Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Ebenezer United Methodist Church, c/o Joy Bouknight, 1911 Buzhardt St., Newberry, SC 29108, Newberry College, 2100 College St., Newberry SC 29108, or the Newberry Opera House, PO Box 357, Newberry SC 29108.

Whitaker Funeral Home, 1704 College Street, Newberry, is assisting the family.

John Brabham

SYCAMORE — Mr. John T. Brabham, husband of Ella Maude Brabham, died Thursday after an extended illness. He was 84.

Mr. Brabham was born Feb. 2, 1921, the son of the late Ben T. and Ula Lee Brabham. He retired from the Naval Weapon Station in Goose Creek and retired as a farmer. He was a member of the Sycamore Baptist Church where he was a deacon and a WWII veteran.

Surviving besides his wife are 2 sons, Dennis and David Brabham both of Sycamore; 1 daughter, Peggy Johnson of Sycamore; 1 brother, Melvin Brabham of Sycamore; 4 sisters, Elise Allen, Eloise Crim and Doris Harter, all of Sycamore and Mary Yokley of Hampton. There are 7 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by 1 son and 1 daughter.

Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 a.m. at the Sycamore Baptist Church with burial following in the Great Salkehatchie Cemetery. Visitation will be held Friday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Smith-Rhoden Funeral Home. Smith-Rhoden Funeral Home of Allendale is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Sycamore Baptist Church.

Archie Foster

SUMTER — A graveside service for Archie Ray Foster, 55, will be 1 p.m. Monday in Florence National Cemetery with military honors. Visitation is 4-6 p.m. Sunday at Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home. Born in Hickory Knob, Ky., to Reese and Mildred Shoopman Foster, he died May 5, 2005. Surviving: wife, Linda Richards Foster; children, Rickey, William Foster, Teresa Goodwin, Frances Robinson; 9 grandchildren.

Carl Johnson

ABBEVILLE — Carl Johnson, 90, widower of Blanche Sleator Johnson, died May 5, 2005. Services will be held in New York at a later date. Chandler-Jackson Funeral Home is in charge. He was born in Ossining, N.Y., to Carl Martin and Anna Bengtsson Johnson and was a retired prison administrator. Surviving: daughters, Barbara Consorte, Judy Kinnamon; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

Charles Houseal

POMARIA — Services for Charles Edward Houseal, 49, will be 4 p.m. Monday at Saint Paul AME Church, burial: Werts Cemetery, Newberry. Wilson Funeral Home, Newberry, is in charge. Born in Newberry Co. to Shirley Mae Houseal Hicks, he died May 2, 2005. Surviving: children, Charles Watson, Theresa Williams; siblings, Frank Jr., Linda Hicks, Diann Young; 2 grandchildren; uncle, 2 aunts; nieces, nephews, cousins.

Catherine Blakeney

KERSHAW — Funeral services for Catherine Cook Blakeney, 96, widow of Carvel Reid Blakeney, Sr., will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, May 9, 2005, from Kershaw First Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the Kershaw City Cemetery. Rev. Bryant D. Fersner will officiate.

Mrs. Blakeney, born in Lancaster, S.C., died Thursday, May 5, 2005. She was the daughter of the late John Amos and Miranda Catherine Hilton Cook. She attended schools in Lancaster and continued her education, graduating from Coker College with a B.S. degree in 1932. She furthered her education by doing graduate work at Clemson College and Columbia College. Mrs. Blakeney taught math and the sciences at Kershaw High School for 29 years. She was a member of Kershaw First Baptist Church, where she was a member of the “Young at Heart Group.” She was a former member of South Carolina Academy of Science and Kershaw Garden Club. Mrs. Blakeney touched many lives of the children she taught at Kershaw High School.

Surviving are her children, Mrs. D.R. (Virginia) Case of Burlington, N.J., C.R. (Reid) Blakeney Jr. of Lugoff, SC, Kenneth Cook Blakeney of Phoenix, AZ, and Edward Blakeney of Kershaw, SC; 10 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Kershaw First Baptist Church Building Fund, Post Office Box 67, Kershaw, SC 29067.

Active pallbearers will be grandsons and Dr. Kenneth Carson.

The Blakeney Family will receive friends Sunday, May 8, 2005, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Baker Funeral Home.

Baker Funeral Home is serving the Blakeney family.

Lillie Mae Williams

COLUMBIA — Services for Mrs. Lillie Mae Williams will be held 2 p.m. Sunday in the Leevy’s Funeral Home, Taylor Street Chapel, with burial in Lincoln Cemetery. Wake services will be held 6 p.m. this evening in the Leevy’s Funeral Home, Taylor Street Chapel. Surviving are her daughters, Lucy Grooms Alston, Ruth Grooms, Margret Glenn, Annie Lee Boatwright, Trevis Trivonne Grooms, and Lisa L. Grooms; sons, Egbert L. Grooms, Fred Grooms, and Stanley Keith Grooms; sister, Lottie Mae Woods; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Jack Guinn

CAMDEN — Funeral services for J.D. “Jack” Guinn, Jr., 79, of Camden, will be held Sunday, May 8, 2005, at 2:00 p.m. at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints with burial to follow in Wateree Baptist Church Cemetery. Bishop Wayne Joyner will officiate. The family will receive friends Saturday, May 7, 2005, from 6:00-7:30 p.m. at Kornegay Funeral Home, Camden Chapel. Memorials may be made to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints - Camden Ward, 34 Chestnut Street, Camden, SC 29020. Kornegay Funeral Home, Camden Chapel, is in charge.

Mr. Guinn died Friday, May 6, 2005. Born in Darlington SC, he was the son of the late Jeter David Guinn, Sr. and Bessie Crolley Guinn. He had retired from Speaks Oil Company. He was a Merchant Marine World War II veteran. He received the following awards and decorations: Reserve Component Achievement Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with 20-year Device; Atlantic War Zone Medal, Pacific War Zone Medal, World War II Victory Medal, South Carolina State Service Medal with 25-year Device, Governor’s Unit Citation and S.C. Guardsman Retirement Medal. Chief Warrant Office Four J.D. Guinn, Jr. served the State of South Carolina and the United States for more than 30 years with Honor and Distinction. Mr. Guinn attended USC, Newberry College and was a graduate of Limestone College. Mr. Guinn was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints - Camden Ward.

Surviving are his wife, Macie Lane Guinn; son, Kent Crolley Guinn of Camden; daughter, Roni L. Keretses of Columbia; grandchildren, Tabitha Marie Lynch, Phillip Joseph Guinn, Ashley Lane Guinn, James Constantine Keretses, William Spero Keretses, Mary Catherine Keretses; brothers, Gene C. “Chick” Guinn of Camden, Gilbert S. Guinn of Greenwood, Gail Guinn of FL, William D. Guinn of Myrtle Beach; sister, Doris Caulder of Camden. He was predeceased by a brother, Ivan F. Guinn.

Julius A. Hammond

SUMMERVILLE — Services for Julius Anderson Hammond, 71, of Summerville, will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 9, at Dial-Murray Funeral Home in Moncks Corner. Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 until 8 p.m. this Saturday evening. Surviving are his wife, Grace, five children, 13 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Charles King

WEST COLUMBIA — Services for Charles Roy King, 58, of West Columbia, will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 8, 2005, in the Chapel of Thompson Funeral Home of West Columbia, officiated by Pastor Lavaughn Keisler. Burial will follow at Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church. Pallbearers will be James Addison, Jim Carero, Charles Lee, Chris Lavenia, John Hodge and Tom Shirley. Honorary pallbearer will be David Harper. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church.

Mr. King died Friday, May 6, 2005. Born in Barberton, Ohio, he was a son of the late Charles Edward King and Betty Velka. Mr. King was currently employed with the U.S. Postal Service and was on its bowling league, of which he was secretary.

Surviving are his wife, Bonnie King of West Columbia; son, Charles Eddie King of West Columbia; sister, Carla Kirsh and brother, Paul Velka, both of Ohio.

Mr. King was predeceased by a sister, Vicki Velka and a son, Kevin David King.

Matthew Williams

BLACKVILLE — Matthew Paul Williams, 22, of 1608 Sunshine Road, Blackville, died Wednesday, May 4, 2005.

Funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday, May 8, 2005, at Blackville Hilda High School Auditorium in Blackville. Burial will follow in Bushy Pond Baptist Church Cemetery in Norway, SC. The casket will be placed in the Auditorium at 12:00 noon.

Mr. Williams was a son of Mr. Clemon Williams, Jr. and Mrs. Bobbie Jenkins Williams.

Survivors include his parents; a son, Jakori Mason Williams; three sisters, Ms. Chandra Williams and Ma. Abigail Williams, both of Blackville, and Ms. Danielle Williams of Denmark; two brothers, Clemon Ashley Williams of Blackville and Cleveland Jones of Atlanta, GA; his maternal grandparents, Mr. Daniel Jenkins and Mrs. Mamie Trowell Jenkins of Norway; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.

Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Saturday, May 7, at W.B. Crumel Funeral Home in North.

Friends may call at the residence and at the funeral home.

Robert S. Clarke Jr.

COLUMBIA — Funeral service for Robert Sellers Clarke, Jr., 58, will be held Sunday at 4 p.m. at Shandon United Methodist Church with entombment in Greenlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum. The family will receive friends Saturday 5-7 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. Memorials may be made to Shandon United Methodist Church, 3407 Devine Street, Columbia, SC 29205 or Hospice Care of Tri County, 166 Stoneridge Drive, Suite 100, Columbia, SC 29210.

Mr. Clarke died Friday, May 6, 2005. Born in Columbia, he was a son of Katherine Elizabeth McCollum Clarke and the late Robert Sellers Clarke, Sr. He attended Midlands Technical College and received his B.A. Degree from Columbia Commercial College. He served in the Army National Guard from 1968-1974, was a computer analyst with SCE&G and was a member of Shandon United Methodist Church where he was a member of the George Huggins Sunday School Class and sang with the Shandon Singers.

Surviving are his wife of twenty-five years, Brenda Helms Clarke; mother of Columbia; sons, Robert S. Clarke, III of Charleston and Lee McCollum Clarke of Columbia; brother and sister-in-law, William Arnold and Judith Rhoad Clarke of Lexington; mother-in-law, Rue Helms of Surfside Beach; sisters-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. James D. Horton of Blythewood and Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Zeoli of Galivants Ferry, S.C.; and nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
