Roberta E. Platts

FAIRFAX — Roberta E. Platts, 94, died May 6, 2005, at the Lexington Medical Center.

She was the daughter of Robert Edwin and Pearle Platts.

Surviving are her sisters, Dorothy Cone and Elanor Crews; brother, Edwin Platts and wife, Doris; nieces and nephews; great and great-great-nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held in the Chapel of Smith-Rhoden Funeral Home, Sunday, May 8, 2005, at 4 p.m. with burial following in St. Nicholas Lutheran Church Cemetery in Fairfax. Visitation will be at 3 p.m. prior to the service.

She lived in Charleston for 71 years and retired from Commissioners of Public Works of the City of Charleston after 41 years service.

Citidel Square Baptist Church was her heart and soul where she took an active part including teaching Sunday School for a number of years.

Smith-Rhoden Funeral Home of Allendale is in charge of arrangements.

Pallbearers will be her nephews.

Memorials may be made to Citidel Square Baptist Church or charity of one’s choice.

Karen Miller

IRMO — Memorial service for Karen Dunne Miller, 41, will be held Monday, May 9, at 2:15 p.m. at Union United Methodist Church. A memorial service will be also be held Saturday, June 4, 2005, at Ascension Episcopal Church, Orlando, Fla. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Brain Tumor Association, 2720 River Road, Des Plaines, Illinois 60018 or to Union United Methodist, 7583 Woodrow St., Irmo, SC 29063. Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel, is assisting the family.

Mrs. Miller died Wednesday, May 4, 2005. Born in Forest Park, Ill., she was a daughter of Philip George Dunne and Helen Mae Engelbrecht. A graduate of Vanderbilt University, she received an MBA from Duke University.

Mrs. Miller was a member of Ascension Episcopal Church in Orlando and attended Union United Methodist Church in Irmo. She was active with “Communities in Schools.”

Surviving are her husband, Mark Alexander Miller; son, Jackson Miller and daughters, Meghann Miller and Emma Miller, all of the home; sister, Diane Dunne of Orlando, Fla.; her father of Lakeland, Fla.; and her mother of Lakeland, Fla.

Wilmont Berry

HARTSVILLE — Funeral services for Wilmont Berry, age 76, who died May 5, will be held Monday at 2:00 p.m. from the West Hartsville Baptist Church. Rev. Tony Hemphill, Rev. Mark Bowers and Kris Berry will officiate. Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home. Visitation will be Sunday 5-7 at the Funeral Home. Mr. Berry was born in Saluda Co. a son of the late Curtis and Vara Whittle Berry. He was a member of West Hartsville Baptist Church, retired from the City of Hartsville as Director of Public Works, and was retired owner of the Hartsville Woodworks. Mr. Berry wrote several books, his latest being the “Scraps of History of Hartsville.” Surviving are his wife: Marion Rhodes Berry, Hartsville; Daughter: Judith Hunter, Indian Trail, N.C.; Son: Marvin Berry, Hartsville; Brothers: Lamar Berry, Saluda, Earl Berry, Batesburg, Sister: Mary Black, Greenwood, 7 Grandchildren, 15 Great Grandchildren, He was preceded in death by a daughter: Virginia Berry Catoe. Memorials may be made to the West Hartsville Baptist Church, General Fund, 1003 West Carolina Ave. Hartsville, SC 29550.

Bertha Hockett

COLUMBIA — Service for Bertha Rowlett Hockett, 87, formerly of Bristol, Tenn., will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at Grace United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Richmond, Va. Memorials may be made to Grace United Methodist Church Building Fund. Visitation will be Saturday 6-8 p.m at Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel, Irmo.

Mrs. Hockett died Friday, May 6, 2005. Born in Richmond, Va., she was the daughter of the late Ernest and Florence Mitchell Rowlett. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church.

Surviving are son and daughter-in-law, Coleman M. Hockett, Jr., and Sandy Patrick of Newland, N.C.; daughters and sons-in-law, Betty J. and Ray Huffman of Rocky Mount, Va., Joyce M. and Gene Brooks of Hickory, N.C. and Flossie and Dan Drociuck of Columbia; and grandchildren, Carmen R. Monts and her husband, Clay, and Alex Rose.

Wister S. Tanner

HEMINGWAY — Wister S. Tanner, 98, of Center Cross Roads, died Friday May 6, 2005, in his home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born April 17, 1907, in Williamsburg County, SC a son of the late Robert and Mattie Eaddy Tanner. His wife of seventy plus years, Rhodie C. Tanner and eight brothers and one sister and a granddaughter all predeceased him.

Mr. Tanner was a charter member of Center Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and taught Sunday school. He had retired from International Paper Company and was a farmer. Mr. Tanner loved to fish and to watch the Atlanta Braves. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather and brother, and his family was his greatest legacy.

Survivors include his children, Wilma Foxworth of Center, SC, Sam Tanner and his wife, Millie of Georgetown, SC, Tom Tanner and his wife Norma, Charles Tanner and his wife, Donnell, all of Center, SC, Gene Tanner and his wife Mary of Conway, SC, and Cinda Woodberry and her husband Albert of Center, SC, fifteen grandchildren, thirty-two great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 3:00 p.m. Sunday May 8, 2005, at Center Baptist Church in Hemingway, SC, with burial to follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Center Baptist Church on Saturday May 7, 2005, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Memorials may be made in Mr. Tanner’s honor to Center Baptist Church, 2602 Schoolhouse Drive, Hemingway, SC 29554 or to Mercy Hospice, PO Box 50640, Myrtle Beach, SC 29578.

Arrangements are entrusted to McMillan-Small Funeral Home of Myrtle Beach, SC.

Elaine Altman Richardson

BRITTONS NECK — Elaine Altman Richardson, 62, wife of Paul M. Richardson, Jr. of Brittons Neck, died Saturday, May 14, 2005 at Marion County Medical Center after courageously fighting cancer.

Mrs. Richardson is remembered as a loving wife, mother and “GranE”. In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, Charles T. Richardson and his wife, Alicia, of Brittons Neck; a daughter, Paula Richardson of Brittons Neck; four grandchildren: Hunter, Ragan, Walt and Grace; two brothers: Thomas J. Altman, Jr. of Brittons Neck and Sam Altman and his wife, Diane, of New Bern, N.C.; and two sisters: Judy Douglas and her husband, Billy, of Tabor City, N.C. and Aneta Daniels of Conway. She was the daughter of the late T.J. and Earline Altman of Brittons Neck.

Mrs. Richardson was a graduate of Winthrop College and received her Masters Degree from The University of South Carolina. She retired from teaching after serving schools in Marion and Florence Counties for 30 years. She was a member of SCEA and NEA and maintained annual reunions with her “Wintrop Buddies” group.

She was a member of Nebo Baptist Church, where she served as church pianist for 50 yeas. She served as teacher of the Harry Baker Sunday School Class for many years and until her recent illness. She was a member of the W.M.U., where she served on many communities and held numerous offices.

Her civic activities include being a former member of the Brittons Neck Grange No. 629. She assumed an active roll in the recent election of Sheriff Mark Richardson, her nephew.

The family will receive friends at Nebo Baptist Church Fellowship Hall from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. on Sunday, May 15, 2005.

Funeral services will be held at Nebo Baptist Church in Brittons Neck on Monday, May 16, 2005, at 5:00 P.M.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Nebo Baptist Church Landscape Fund or Choir, 6411 Hwy. 908, Brittons Neck, S.C. 29546.

Smith-Collins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Lula Belle Brickle

ST. GEORGE — Mrs. Lula Belle Brickle, 80 of St. George passed away Sunday, May 22, 2005, in St. George Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 25, at Bryant Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Charles Readling and Rev. Tim Futrell officiating. Burial will follow in Murray Cemetery, Grover. A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. at Bryant Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Thomas Infinger, Charlie Brickle, George Brickle, James W. Brickle, Mark Risher and Johnny Hadden.

Mrs. Brickle was born February 14, 1925, in Sumter, SC, a daughter of the late Robert B. Amerson and Hattie Mosier Amerson. She was the widow of Jesse W. Brickle and a member of Walterboro Church of God and she was a seamstress for the Branchville Shirt Factory.

Surviving are a daughter, Sheila (Jerry) H. Risher of Harleyville; a brother, William T. Amerson of Clinton, NC; three sisters, Katie Brickle and Ruby (Johnny) Hadden, both of St. George, and Blanche (Parnell) Dubois of Simpsonville, SC.

Two grandchildren, Ranae (Michael) Smoak of Holly Hill and Mark (Dana) Risher of Surfside Beach and seven great-grandchildren.

Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society, 1599 Clifton NE, Atlanta, GA 30329 and/or Murray Cemetery, in care of Millie Murray, 3028 Wire Rd. St. George, SC 29477.

James Dozier

CHARLESTON — James Carlisle Dozier, age 89, husband of the late Miriam Smith Dozier, died Saturday, May 21, 2005, in Heartland Nursing Center in Charleston following an illness.

Mr. Dozier was born in Marion, SC, a son of the late Whiteford and Flossie Coleman Dozier. He attended Clemson University and was a U.S. Air Force veteran. Mr. Dozier was former manager of Conway Truck and Tractor. He was pre-deceased by a sister: Elizabeth Shelley and a brother: Wyburn Dozier.

Surviving are two sons: Jim Dozier of Spring Hills, Kansas, and Keith Dozier and wife Vikki of Frederickburg, VA; one daughter: Denise Tutas and husband Greg of Edisto Island, SC; 7 grandchildren and 1 great-grandson; three brothers: William Dozier of Marion, SC, Robert Dozier of Asheboro, NC, and Edgar Dozier of Mullins, SC; two sisters: Dorothy McIntyre and Patricia “Shan” Ann, both of Marion, SC.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at Hillcrest Cemetery. Directed by Goldfinch Funeral Home, Conway Chapel.

Maybelle Thomas Frye

BAMBERG — Maybelle Thomas Frye, 89, of 62 Sanders St., Bamberg, widow of the late Roy Lee Frye, died May 23, 2005, in The Regional Medical Center. Born Nov. 11, 1915, to the late Tom and Leal Price Thomas, she was a member of Main St. Methodist Church. She enjoyed sewing, walking, cooking and sports, and was a homemaker.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, May 25, 2005, at 3:00 p.m. at Cooner Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Herbert Thomas and Rev. Blaire Hudson officiating. Burial to follow in South End Cemetery.

Survivors: 3 sons, Franklin and Ella Frye of Bamberg, SC, Leroy and Lisa Frye of Leesville, SC, Jerry and Johnnie Marie Frye of Irmo, SC; 1 daughter, Gail Russell of Summerville, SC; 1 brother, J.V. Thomas of Orangeburg, SC; 8 grandchildren; 12 grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Roy Lee Frye.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, May 24, 2005, from 6-8 p.m. at Cooner Funeral Home. Memorials can be made to Main St. Methodist Church, P.O. Box 944, Bamberg, SC 29003, or to Bamberg County Office on Aging, P.O. Box 6, Bamberg, SC 29003.

Harry Odom Bryan

SPARTANBURG — Harry Odom Bryan, 85, of 204 Hillbrook Drive, died Sunday, May 22, 2005, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after a brief illness. Born February 18, 1920, in Edgefield, SC, he was the son of the late Preston B. and Velma Odom Bryan and the husband of the late Margaret Anderson Bryan. A 1949 graduate of Wofford College and a 1959 graduate of Clemson College, he was a retired civil engineer and was Vice-President of Maguire/Harwood Beebe Consulting Engineers after 40 years of service. He was a member of Fernwood Baptist Church, the Spartanburg Country Club, and a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific Theatre.

Survivors include a son, Andy Bryan, a grandson, Drew Bryan, and a granddaughter, Katie Bryan, all of Lake Bowen; and five sisters, Mary Hobbs of Timmonsville, Elizabeth Bryan of Columbia, Martha Bryan of Darlington, Lena Brown of Depew, NY, and Nell Kelley of Martinez, GA. He was predeceased by three brothers, P.B. Bryan, Ellis Bryan, and Glenwood Bryan; and a sister, Louise Bartley.

Visitation will be 1:30-2:45 p.m. Tuesday, May 24, 2005, at Floyd’s Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral services will follow at 3:00 p.m. at the Chapel conducted by the Rev. Dr. P. Randall Wright. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Fernwood Baptist Church, 200 Fernwood Drive, Spartanburg, SC 29307.

The family is at the home, 204 Hillbrook Drive, Spartanburg.
