Della N. Jones

LEXINGTON — Della N. Jones, widow of Harold L. Jones, died Tuesday, May 24, 2005. Born in Adams, MA, she was a daughter of the late Andrew J. and Anna Haueisen Newlands. Formerly of Dunnellon, FL, she had been an area resident since February 2005. Mrs. Jones was a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Adams, MA. Additionally, she was a member of the Ladies Shriners of America, Neighborhood Watch, and she enjoyed numerous crafts.

Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Russell Fitzgerald of Lexington, SC; grandchildren, Michael Fitzgerald and Daniel Fitzgerald; nephew, Glenn Newlands, his wife, Laurie, and their children, Cory Carpenter and Raymond Carpenter.

A private family memorial service will be held. Entombment will take place at a later date in Veterans’ Cemetery, Tampa, FL. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington is handling arrangements.

Elaine Gantt

COLUMBIA — Funeral service for Elaine Williamson Gantt, 90, will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with interment to follow in Crescent Hill Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Shriners’ Hospital for Children, c/o Jamil Temple, 206 Jamil Road, Columbia, SC 29210.

Mrs. Gantt, wife of the late Clifton Wilson Gantt, Sr., died Tuesday, May 24, 2005, in Lexington Medical Center after a sudden illness. Born July 9, 1914, in Columbia, she was the youngest of four children of the late Robert Dexter and Mamie Onley Williamson. Mrs. Gantt was a graduate of Columbia High School.

Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Clifton Wilson Gantt, Jr. and Dorothy M. Gantt; and numerous nieces and nephews.

James Johnson Jr.

GASTON — Services for Staff Sgt. James “Anthony” Johnson Jr. are noon Friday at Brookland Baptist Church with burial in Celestial Memorial Gardens. Visitation is 2-8 p.m., with wake from 6:30-8 p.m., today at Pearson’s Funeral Home, Columbia. Born to James Sr. and Alberta Johnson, he is survived by wife, Teresa Daniels; sons, Anthony III, O’Brian Johnson; siblings, Trene, Janet, Winnifred, Henry, Larry.

Ethel Greene

COLUMBIA — Services for Ethel Greene, 97, will be 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 28, 2005, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Englewood, N.J. She was born in Columbia, daughter of the late Nettie S. Epps, and William Reed Wilson, and died on May 21, 2005, in Englewood, N.J. She was the stepdaughter of the late K.C. Epps, and sister of the late Nettie “Tots” Chappelle and Juetta Simpson of Columbia, and widow of John Greene of Hartford, CT.

Manigault-Hurley Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.

Survivors are: a daughter, LaVerne Prager, of Washington , CT; grandchildren, Debra Prager, Cambridge, MA, Kevin Prager, of Belgium, Karsten, and Nicole Prager, of San Francisco, CA.

A graduate of South Carolina State College (University), she retired from the New York Public Library in 1977. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 113 Engle Street, Englewood, N.J. 07631.

Cora Horton Reese

BETHUNE — Services with burial for Cora Horton Reese, 95, widow of Edwin Reese, are 2 p.m. Friday at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church. Visitation is 6-8 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home, Kershaw. Born in Jefferson to Earley and Ida West Horton, she died May 24, 2005. Surviving: children, Carroll, Len, W. Gerald, R. Eddie Reese, Margie Jackson, Myrtis McCants; sister, Edna Broadway; grandchild, great-grandchildren.

Tommie Joye

FLORENCE — Tommie Joye, 82, of 2706 Barkley Avenue, Florence, S.C., died Tuesday, May 24, 2005, in a Florence hospital after an illness.

Mr. Joye was born in Johnsonville, S.C., a son of the late George B. and Eppie Hughes Joye. He was a member of the Truth Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church where he served on the church board. He was a member of the church choir and was President of the Loyalty Sunday School Class. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving with the Seabees in the South Pacific. He was employed by International Paper Co. for 5 years. He attended the Florence County Schools and received his managers training in the retail food business in Orangeburg, S.C., retiring in 1985 after 32 years of service.

He was preceded in death by 2 infant children, three brothers and one sister.

Surviving are his wife, Margaret McDaniel Joye of Florence; 1 son, Howard Anthony (Beverly) Joye of Columbia, S.C.; 1 grandson, William Wade (Ferris) Joye of Columbia, S.C.; 3 sisters, Murriel Feagin of Bonneau, S.C., Pearline Driggers of Rockingham, N.C., and Bertha Calliham of Clinton, S.C.

Memorials may be made to the “Organ Fund,” c/o the Crusaders Sunday School Class, Truth Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church, P.O. Box 5011, Florence, SC 29502-5011.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Truth Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church. Burial will follow in the Old Johnsonville Cemetery in Johnsonville, S.C., directed by Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home of Florence.

Charles L. Matthews Jr.

CAYCE — Mr. Charles L. Matthews, Jr., aged 83, died Tuesday afternoon, May 24, 2005. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday at Transfiguration Lutheran Church, with burial in Woodridge Cemetery in Lexington immediately after the church service. Visitation will be held Thursday, May 26, 2005, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Thompson Funeral Home in West Columbia, SC.

Mr. Matthews was born in Saluda, SC, a son of the late Charles Lambert and Leona Padgett Matthews. He was a retired Casualty Claims Manager with T.M. Mayfield and Company. Among his many honors in the adjusting area was Claims Manager of the Year. He graduated from Hollywood High School, attended Clemson University, and served in the U.S. Navy. He was an active member of Transfiguration Lutheran Church, having served the church in many roles such as Sunday School teacher, Council Member and Chair of Council.

Survivors include his wife, Doris B. Matthews; son and daughter-in-law, Charles Ray and Cameron Matthews of Charlotte, NC; daughter and son-in-law, Shirley Ruth and Aaron Shirey of Lexington, SC; daughter, Sylvia Ann Egner of Houston, TX; three grandchildren, Ryan and Hunter Matthews of Charlotte, NC, Katherine Egner of Houston, TX; and sister, Emily McCarty of Batesburg, SC. Two sisters, Helen Love and Maybelle Lambries, preceded him in death.

Pallbearers will be Mike McCarty, Birt McCarty, Dennis Lambries, Brandon Ashley, Ryan Matthews and Hunter Matthews. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Men of the Church Organization, and Leisure Time Group of Transfiguration Lutheran Church.

Memorials may be made to Transfiguration Lutheran Church at 1301 Twelfth Street, P.O. Box 2461, Cayce-West Columbia, SC 29171.

The family will be at 2405 Owl Circle, West Columbia, SC, to receive friends.

Robert E. Wilkes Sr.

ST. MATTHEWS — Robert Edwin Wilkes, Sr., 79, of 241 Murph Mill Road, died Tuesday evening, May 24, 2005, in The Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg. Service will be 11 a.m. Friday, May 27, at St. Paul United Methodist Church with Rev. James McGee officiating. Burial will be in West End Cemetery. Dukes-Harley Funeral Home is in charge.

Mr. Wilkes was born in Alcolu, a son of the late Clyde A. and Pearl Victoria Wilkes. He was a graduate of the Medical University of South Carolina in Pharmacy. Mr. Wilkes founded and operated Calhoun Pharmacy for 47 years until his retirement in 1996. Mr. Wilkes was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church and was a former member of the Calhoun Development Board and of the Rotary Club of St. Matthews and was honored in 1995 as “Rotary Man of the Year.” He was predeceased by 2 brothers, Claude Warren Wilkes and James Lawrence Wilkes and a sister, Grace Louise Baker.

Survivors: wife, Mrs. Barbara Lewis Wilkes of the home; son and daughter-in-law, Robert Edwin Wilkes, Jr. (Regina), Trubull, CT; daughter, Sherelyn Dale Wilkes, Bangor, Maine; stepdaughter, Mrs. Michael (Anne Lewis) Shealy, St. Matthews; stepson, Malcolm David Lewis, St. Matthews; sister, Mrs. Annie Elizabeth “Lib” W. Taylor, Manning; 2 brothers, Clyde A. Wilkes, Jr., Manning, William H. Wilkes, Swansea; a number of nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Dukes-Harley Funeral Home. At other times friends may call at the residence and the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to St. Paul United Methodist Church, 1808 Bridge St. East., St. Matthews, SC 29135.

Delilah Sullivan

JEFFERSON — A graveside service for Delilah Boulware Sullivan, 88, widow of Bruce Sullivan, is 4 p.m. Friday in Jefferson Cemetery. Visitation will follow at Jefferson Community Center. Sutton Funeral Home, Pageland, is in charge. Born in Fairfield Co. to Will and Marion Boulware, she died May 24, 2005. Surviving: daughter, Wanda Price; grandchildren, Jason, Dusty, Dylan, Liza, Lacy; brother, Frank Boulware.

Rounette Chewning

MANNING — Services for Rounette Virginia Chewning, 91, widow of Reginald Chewning, are 3 p.m. Friday (visitation 6-8 tonight) at Stephens Funeral Home, burial in Jordan UM Church Cemetery. Born in Alcolu to Edward and Annie McCabe, she died May 25, 2005. Surviving: daughter, Jarma Hewitt; two grandsons; sisters, Edna Lowder, Erma Prescott, Merceline Richburg, Deraldine Cooper, Betty Roof.

Peggy Bennett

LANCASTER — Mrs. Peggy G. Blackmon Bennett, age 90, died May 25, 2005.

Mrs. Bennett is survived by her children, Mary Ellen Hendrix and her husband Danny, Judy B. Robinson and Doug Blackmon of Lancaster, Carlene McCall of Seneca, granddaughters, Cayce H. Rawls and Sandra H. Long of Columbia.

The services will be at Hartley Funeral Home Chapel at 11:00 am Saturday morning, May 28, 2005.

Thomas Lawrence

COLUMBIA — Thomas Carl “Tommy” Lawrence, 83, died Tuesday, May 24, 2005, in National Health Care (NHC) in Columbia.

Mr. Lawrence was born in Hamlet, N.C., March 20, 1922, a son of the late Thomas C. Lawrence and Myrtle Yarborough Lawrence. He graduated from Hamlet High School in 1940 and was employed by the CSX Railroad for 42 years. He attended Purdue University and Anacosta University while serving in the Navy in World War II. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Andrews for the past 53 years.

Surviving are: his widow, Lou Eva Watson Lawrence of Columbia; two daughters, Lou Ellen Watson and her husband, Ed, and Elizabeth “Beth” Brabham and her husband, Lamar, all of Columbia; and three grandchildren, Mary Beth Watson, Ellen Riley Watson and Scott Manning Brabham.

Funeral services will be at the graveside in Andrews Memorial Cemetery in Andrews at 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 27, 2005. Officiating will be Rev. Luther H. Rickenbaker, III.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service at Trinity United Methodist Church Family Life Center.

Marian Wheelhouse

COLUMBIA — Memorial services for Marian Gertrude Wheelhouse, 91, widow of Donald Wheelhouse, are 5 p.m. Friday at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness, Blythewood Congregation. Mrs. Wheelhouse passed away May 22, 2005. Surviving are her daughters, Janice Parks, Glen Burie, Md., Gail Leitzsey, Columbia; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchild; predeceased by grandchild, Wendy Parks.

Lynwood Bates Jr.

NEESES — Lynwood R. Bates Jr., 59, of 537 Rutland Road, Neeses, died Wednesday morning, May 25, 2005, in The Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg.

A memorial service will be held 4:00 p.m. Saturday, May 28, 2005, at Bethany Baptist Church in the Bolentown Community, Orangeburg, with Rev. Steve Scott and Rev. Henry Cooper officiating. Thompson Funeral Home, Inc. in Orangeburg is in charge.

He was the son of Margaret Sanford Moore and the late Lynwood R. Bates, Sr. He was born October 24, 1945, in Orangeburg County. He was a graduate of Norway High School. He was retired from the S.C. State Government as an inspector. He served in the National Guard and was a member of the Norway Masonic Lodge and a member of Bethany Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Janet C. Bates of the Bolentown Community; 2 sons and daughters-in-law, M. Jason and Tina Bates, Gary B. and Susan Bates, all of the Bolentown Community; his mother, Margaret Moore of the Bolentown Community; 4 grandchildren, Justin Bates, Taylor Bates, Ashton Bates and Julia Etheridge, all of the Bolentown Community; 1 brother and sister-in-law, Larry and Wanda Bates of the Bolentown Community.

Friends may call at the residence, 537 Rutland Road, Neeses, and at Thompson Funeral Home, Inc. in Orangeburg. Visitation will be held 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Bethany Baptist Church Fellowship Hall in Bolentown Community, Orangeburg.

Memorials may be made to the Duke University Medical Center/Brain Tumor Center, Durham, NC 27710.
