Davey Morton

COLUMBIA — Graveside service for Mr. Davey Lee Morton, 73, of Columbia, will be held at three o’clock Friday afternoon May 27, 2005, in Greenlawn Memorial Park with his son-in-law, The Reverend Joseph Holland officiating. The family will receive friends at their home. Shives Funeral Home is in charge.

Mr. Morton died Tuesday, May 24, 2005. Born in Columbia, S.C., he was a son of the late Lee Edward and Inez Robbins Morton. He retired as a civil service employee at Ft. Jackson after 30 years of service and 10 years at USC.

Survivors include his wife, Haven Lavelle Morton of Columbia; sons, John E. Morton and his wife Sandra of Elmire, N.Y., and Andrew Gary Morton of Columbia; daughters, Lavelle Hollard and husband Joseph of Birmingham, AL and Gwendolyn A. Martin of Columbia.

Triniti Ross

COLUMBIA — Graveside service for Baby Triniti Ross will be held 2 p.m. Friday in the Babyland Section of Lincoln Cemetery. Viewing will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday in the Leevy’s Funeral Home, Taylor Street Chapel, is in charge. Surviving are her parents, Sean and Kisa Ross; sisters, Eboni and Essence Ross; brother, Terrell Ross; grandparents, Pervis Isaac, Joyce McCloud, Jackie Ross and Rosalyn Ross; great-grandmothers, Jannie Ross, Mary McCloud, Carrie Gallman and Mary Isaac.

Elbert Howard Sanford Sr.

COPE — Elbert Howard Sanford, Sr., 87, died Wednesday.

Funeral--3:00 p.m. Friday, May 27, 2005, at Two Mile Swamp Baptist Church in Cope with burial in the church cemetery.

Visitation--6:00-8:00 p.m. Thursday at Thompson Funeral Home, Inc. in Orangeburg.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Two Mile Swamp Baptist Church Recreation Fund, 1066 Bonnette Road, Cope, SC 29038.

Jeffrey Scott Arpan

COLUMBIA — Jeffrey Scott Arpan, Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Business Administration, University of South Carolina, Moore School of Business, died Saturday, May 28, 2005, after a brief illness. Professor Arpan held the James F. Kane Professorship in International Business and served as Chairman of the International Business Department from 1985-2003. He was the Director of the Master in International Business Studies (MIBS) program for many years and under his leadership the program was ranked number 1 by U.S. News and World Report. He was instrumental in developing a strong working relationship between the Moore School of Business and major corporations throughout the U.S. an was active in executive development programs for companies such as IBM, Verizon, Westinghouse, Eastman Chemical, Sonoco, and Xerox. In 1999, Professor Arpan received the Outstanding Teacher Award for Executive Education and the Alfred G. Smith Teaching Award. He was also a Fellow and previous President of the Academy of International Business, the major professional association of international business professors. Together with his wife, Luz Rodriguez Arpan, he founded Hispanic Connections, a small business that provides a variety of services to connect and integrate Hispanic and other business communities.

At age 24, Professor Arpan was the youngest person to receive a doctoral degree in international business from Indiana University. His dissertation was selected by the Academy of International Business as the best international business dissertation completed in 1971. In 1976, he was selected as one of the “Outstanding Young Men in America;” in 2001 was named one of the “Ten Southerners to Watch in Globalization” by the Southern Growth Policies Board; and in 2002, was selected as the Community Ambassador for the Year by the Board of Directors of International Friendship Ministries.

For more than a quarter of a century, Professor Arpan researched and presented international business topics in over fifty countries on five continents. His primary research interests were the global competitiveness of industries, the impact of culture on business practices, the relationship between international business and the ecological environment, and international business education. He authored more than a half dozen books and fifty articles on these and other areas of international business.

In 2001, Professor Arpan was diagnosed with Semantic Dementia, a progressive and debilitating disease affecting speech and the ability to communicate. By 2003, the progress of the disease required him to retire. He devoted much of his time in retirement to education of others about the disease and to research being conducted on the illness, including participation in a long-term study being conducted by the Memory and Aging Center for the University of California at San Francisco.

Professor Arpan was the middle child born to parents Eleanor Ruth (Holly) Arpan and Floyd Gorden Arpan. Professor Arpan is survived by his wife, Luz Rodriguez Arpan (or as he called her, “la Luz de me vida”), his stepson, Alejandro Penaranda Arpan, his three daughters, Laura Arpan, Amy Arpan, and Piper Arpan, his granddaughter, Reed Ralstin, his sister, Cheryl Sorokin, his brother, Randy Arpan, and his nephews, Nathan Arpan, Justin Arpan, Jordan Arpan and David Knowles.

A Jeffrey S. Arpan Fellowship has been established. The purpose of the fellowship is to provide support for graduate students in international business. Moore School of Business will provide matching funds for donations. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that those wishing to honor Jeff’s memory do so with a contribution to this fellowship. A memorial service is being planned Saturday, June 4, at 11 a.m. at the Rutledge Chapel, University of South Carolina’s Horseshoe.

Sharon Johnson

CHARLOTTE — Funeral service for Ms. Sharon Elaine Johnson, 29, formerly of Blackville, S.C., will be held Saturday, June 4, 1:00 p.m. at Macedonia Baptist Church, Blackville, S.C., with burial in Hope Memorial Park, Barnwell, S.C.

The remains will be placed at Macedonia Baptist Church, Blackville, S.C., Saturday from noon until the hour of service. There will be no viewing of remains.

Ms. Sharon Elaine Johnson died Wednesday, June 1, 2005, in Charlotte, N.C. Born in San Diego, Calif., she was the daughter of proud parents: Mr. Robert and Mrs. Shirley Woods-Johnson. At an early age, the family relocated to Camp Lejune, N.C. Ms. Sharon Elaine Johnson was educated by the public schools of Blackville, S.C., a graduate of the Class of 1993. She received post secondary education from The Citadel, Charleston, S.C., and was a 1998 graduate of the College of Charleston, Charleston, S.C., with a degree in Physics. She was a member of Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church, Blackville, S.C.

She was employed by Meineke of North Carolina. Ms. Sharon Elaine Johnson possessed a gentle demeanor; her Christian disposition and genuine love for her family and friends will continue to live in the hearts and minds of all who knew her.

Preceding her in death were her grandparents: the late Mr. Sammie Woods, Sr., the late Mrs. Ismell Johnson and the late Mr. John Johnson, Sr.

Survivors include: Her devoted parents, Mr. Robert and Mrs. Shirley Woods-Johnson; (2) dedicated brothers, Mr. Corey Maurice Johnson, Blackville, S.C., and Mr. Timothy Robert Johnson, Columbia, S.C.; (2) godsisters, Ms. Ebony Armstrong, Blackville, S.C., and Ms. Kelsey Whaley, Washington , D.C.; her grandparent, Ms. Ruth G. Woods, Blackville, S.C.; aunts, Ms. Catherine McCreary, Blackville, SC., Mrs. Dora Ashley (Mr. Thomas), Williston, S.C., Mrs. Mary W. Felder (Mr. Freddie), North Augusta, S.C., Ms. Carrie Woods and Ms. Darlene Woods, both of Blackville, S.C., Ms. Marshell Johnson, Washington , D.C., Ms. Irene Ross (Mr. Fred), Jacksonville, Fla., Mrs. Ruth Sales (Mr. Felton), Philadelphia, Pa., Mrs. Willie Dell Montgomery (Mr. Tom), Philadelphia, Pa.; (6) uncles, Mr. Sammie Woods, Jr. (Mrs. Eartha), Denmark, S.C., Mr. Arthur Woods, Atlanta, Ga., Mr. James Woods and Mr. Ronnie Woods, both of Blackville, S.C., Mr. Charles Johnson (Mrs. Bertha), Blackville, S.C., Mr. John Johnson, Jr. (Mrs. Brenda), Wagener, S.C.; other relatives and caring friends.

Mary Margaret McColl Crespo

ASHEVILLE, N.C. Mary Margaret McColl Crespo, died July 26, 2005, after a long illness.

Daughter of Carolyn Walker McColl and David Kenneth McColl, she was born in Columbia, SC.

She graduated from Christ Church Episcopal School and was a Magna Cum

Laude graduate from Williams College in Williamstown, MA. After graduation,

she spent three years working in Seattle, WA for Volunteers in Service to

America. She was a member of Christ Church Episcopal.

She is survived by her parents; her daughter, Savannah Rose Crespo; two

sisters, Elizabeth McColl of Charlotte, NC, and Lynn Kozikowski and her

husband, David of Albuquerque, NM; a grandmother, Elizabeth King Walker of Columbia, SC; two uncles, Hugh Leon McColl and his wife, Jane, of Charlotte, NC., and James Carroll McColl and wife, Betsy, of Columbia, SC; an aunt, Nina Walker Conway and her husband, Ned, of Richmond, Virginia; and two nephews and three nieces.

A memorial service will be conducted Monday, August 1, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. at Christ Church, Episcopal with interment in Christ Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends in McKissick Refectory following the service.

Memorials may be sent to Christ Church, 10 N. Church Street, Greenville, SC 29601 and designate for either Haiti missions or the Sterling Hope Center.

Norman Hallman

LEESVILLE Norman M. Hallman, 76, died Saturday, July 30, 2005. A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. Monday, August 1, 2005, at Milton Shealy Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. J. Hilton Roof officiating.

Mr. Hallman was born in Leesville, S.C., to the late James Rufus and Goldie Gage Clark Hallman. He was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church. He loved wood working, farming and deer hunting. He was a machinist with B&S Machine Works in Aiken.

Surviving are his sister, Ailsa Vermelle Hallman of Leesville.

Family will receive friends at the home of his sister in Leesville. Memorials may be made to Bethlehem Lutheran Church, c/o Building Fund, 210 Bethlehem Circle, Leesville, SC 29070. Milton Shealy Funeral Home, 803.532.6100, is in charge of all arrangements.

Ruth Hiott

WALTERBORO Mrs. Naomi Ruth Varn Hiott, 104, of Bells Highway, Walterboro, died Thursday afternoon, July 28, 2005, at the Oakwood Health Care Center in Walterboro.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday morning, August 1, 2005, at The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Home Chapel, Walterboro. Interment will follow in Evergreen Christian Church Cemetery, Walterboro Mrs. Hiott was born May 17, 1901 in Colleton County and was a daughter of the late John David Varn and the late Ursula Ulmer Varn. She was the oldest member of Evergreen Christian Church, where she was a member of the Christian Women's Fellowship, was a former Sunday School teacher and, until her health began to fail, was active in all church affairs. She was the widow of Mr. Ben Hiott, and a seamstress in her home for many years.

Surviving her are several nieces and nephews.

Family and friends called Sunday afternoon at The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Homes, Walterboro Chapel, 1193 Bells Highway, Walterboro, 843.538.5408.

Ligon Hutto

NEESES Ligon "Ed" Hutto, 87, of Neeses, died Friday, July 29, 2005.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, August 1, 2005, at Mt. Beulah Pentecostal Holiness Church with Rev. Henry Chavis and Rev. Roger Tripp officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The casket will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Pallbearers will be grandsons and great-grandsons.

Mr. Hutto was born in Orangeburg County, a son of the late Alfred "Solie" and Beulah Ashe Hutto. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was retired from Savannah River Site (i.e., Dupont). He was also a farmer and gardener, and was known for his famous tomatoes.

Survivors include his wife, Lizzie Williams Hutto of the home; three daughters, Patsy and her husband, Albert Jeffcoat, Joyce Williams, all of Orangeburg, and Anna and her husband, Dickie Warren of West Columbia; one son, Eddie A. Hutto of Neeses; a number of half-brothers and half-sisters; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

The family received friends Sunday at Culler-McAlhany Funeral Home in North, and other times at the home, 100 Second Street, Neeses.

Memorials may be made to Mt. Beulah Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Elsie Jefferson CAYCE Services for Mrs. Elsie B. Jefferson, 11 a.m. today: Watkins, Garrettand Woods Mortuary, burial: Greenville Memorial Gardens, both in Greenville. Born in New York, NY to Arthur Drysdale and Loretta Panton Thompson, she died July 27, 2005. Survivors: children, Barbara Dumas, Darlene Norman, James Jefferson; stepfather, William Thompson; grandchild, great-grandchildren.

William Louis "Bill" Mellichamp Jr.

CHARLOTTE Bill, 85, died suddenly on July 28, 2005. He was born August 31, 1920, in Greenwood County, South Carolina, the son of the late William Louis Mellichamp, Sr. and Hattie Strom Mellichamp. He grew up on a farm in Callison Community, SC near Edgefield and Ninety Six.

He is survived by one son, Larry Mellichamp and his wife, Audrey; two daughters, Judy Mellichamp Lewis and her husband, Jerry, and Joanne Mellichamp; five grandchildren, Suzanne Lyne Mellichamp, Jason Patrick Lewis, Jenna Kristina Lewis, April Rose MacGeorge and Sarah May Hunt; and a special friend, Edith Spitzer, all of Charlotte; and sister, Harriet Ellis and her husband, Pete of Kingstree, SC. His wife of some 50 years, Martha Thomas Mellichamp, passed away in January of 2001.

After graduating from Greenwood High School, Bill moved to Lamar, SC to live with his Uncle Luther and Aunt Annie Mae Fields on a tobacco farm. He worked for a few years at Sonoco Products Co. in Hartsville, SC until after Pearl Harbor. He was inducted into Army Air Corps Aviation Cadet training on December 2, 1943, and was honorably discharged November 9, 1945.

He attended the University of South Carolina at Columbia as a 2-year special student in art and English literature and moved to Charlotte in 1946. He attended the Carnegie Mellon Art School in Pittsburgh in 1948. In 1951, he started Champé Advertising Production Company in Charlotte, which specialized in silk-screen printing, and became very successful due to his untiring efforts to maintain high quality and personal service. He gave a great deal to his church and community through that company. Champé Graphics & Production, Inc. is now owned and operated by Judy and Jerry Lewis and Joanne Mellichamp.

He was a loving husband and father. He liked to travel, and kept in touch by visiting family members throughout South Carolina and Georgia. He always had a fine garden and shared the produce, especially tomatoes. He enjoyed being helpful to his family and friends. His honest and non-judgmental attitude, calm nature, and practical knowledge have helped his family in their lives as well.

He was a member of Hickory Grove United Methodist Church for over 40 years, where he was a member of the Epworth Class and Methodist Men, and was a member of the American Legion Post 400, of Hickory Grove Community in Charlotte.

His life will be honored with a memorial service 7:00 p.m. Monday, August 1 at Hickory Grove United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Arnie Corriher officiating. A reception will follow.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the UNC Charlotte Botanical Gardens, c/o Larry Mellichamp, McMillan Greenhouse, UNC Charlotte, Charlotte, NC 28223.

Arrangements are by the Wilson Chapel of Hankins & Whittington Funeral Service, 5301 Albemarle Road.
