Laura Monts

WEST COLUMBIA Funeral services for Mrs. Frances Laura Monts, 87, of West Columbia, will be held 2 p.m. Monday, August 1, 2005, at Thompson Funeral Home of West Columbia, officiated by The Reverend Bill Cloer and Pastor Charlie Stroud. Interment will follow in Southland Memorial Gardens. The family received friends Sunday evening at Thompson Funeral Home of West Columbia, and, at other times, welcomes friends to visit at 1434 Hollyberry Lane, West Columbia.

Mrs. Monts died Thursday, July 28, 2005. Born in Newberry, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Ebb and Carrie Gruber Long. She had retired from Allied Chemical and was a member of the Golden Years Senior Citizens Group.

Survivors are her daughter and son-in-law, Connie and Hans Doberass of West Columbia; sons and daughter-in-law, John and Anita Monts of Gaston, S.C, and Donald Monts of West Columbia; sister, Mattie Mae Wicker of Prosperity; ten grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Mrs. Monts was preceded in death by her husband, George C. Monts, and a son, George M. Monts. The family would like to express their appreciation to the nursing staff of Southern Care Hospice.

Daniel O'Rourke

BLYTHEWOOD A funeral mass for Daniel James O'Rourke, 19, the son of Jim and Debbie O'Rourke, will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, August 1, 2005, at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 721 Polo Road, Northeast Columbia, S.C. The family will visit with friends thirty minutes prior to the service at the church, casual attire is suggested. Caughman-Harman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Daniel is survived by his mother and father of Blythewood; brothers, Jim O'Rourke of Chapel Hill, NC, and Nick O'Rourke of Blythewood; grandparents, Jim and Marion O'Rourke of Brookfield, WI and William and Diane Edmonds of Summerfield, FL; god-parents, Mike and Mary O'Rourke of Franklin, TN, and a number of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

James Roof

BATESBURG Services for James Edward Roof, 66, 3 p.m. today at St. James CME with burial in St. James Cemetery, officiated by Rev. Richard Wilson. Amos & Sons Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Batesburg to Inez Roof, he died July 27, 2005. Surviving are his mother, Inez Roof, and aunt, Mattie Roof.

John I. Royster GEORGETOWN Services for John I. Royster, 89, will be held Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, Columbia, with Reverend Bob Barrows of Pawleys Island Community Church officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Columbia. Memorials may be made to Pawleys Island Community Church - Romania Mission, PO Box 777, Pawleys Island SC 29585. Visitation will be Tuesday 1:30-2:30 p.m. at the funeral home prior to the service.

Mr. Royster died Thursday, July 28, 2005, in Atlanta, Ga. Born in Columbia, he was a son of the late J.T. and Mae Mullikin Royster. He attended U.S.C., owned a restaurant and retired after forty-three years as a senior engineer with Southern Railroad. He enjoyed travel, fishing, carpentry, photography, computers and spending time with his family. He was a member of Pawleys Island Community Church, a Master Mason of Acadia Lodge 94, and an active member of Pawleys Island Civic Association.

Surviving are daughter, Mary Royster Chandler of Columbia; granddaughter, Angela Marie Cook of Atlanta, Ga; step-daughter, Dawn Morton of Monroe, N.C.; twin brother, William T. Royster of Mooresville, N.C.; and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his first wife of 54 years, Elizabeth Perry Royster; his second wife, Allison Cobb Royster; and a brother, T. J. "Boots" Royster, Jr.

Julian B. Salley Jr.

AIKEN Julian B. Salley, Jr., prominent Aiken attorney and civic leader, died on Friday, July 29, 2005, at his residence. He was 92.

Born in Aiken County, the son of Julian B. Salley and Eulalie Chafee Salley, he was a graduate of the former Aiken Institute, a 1933 graduate of The Citadel, and a 1936 graduate of the University of South Carolina School of Law, where he was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega social fraternity and elected to membership in Phi Beta Kappa. He returned to Aiken in 1936 and joined his father, P.F. Henderson, and Elmore S. Henderson in the law firm of Henderson & Salley, where he remained for his entire career except for his military service. He served as an Aiken County attorney from 1951 to 1973. When the Henderson & Salley firm merged with the Hull Towill firm in Augusta to become Hull Towill Norman Barrett & Salley in 1999, Mr. Salley became of counsel to the firm. He was admitted to state and federal courts in South Carolina and the United States Supreme Court. He is has been listed in The Best Lawyers in America.

Mr. Salley was a proud veteran of World War II where he served in the U.S. Army as a tank commander in the European theater. He retired from the Army Reserves with the rank of Lt. Colonel.

Mr. Salley was a lifelong member of the St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church. At the time of his death, he was a Life Trustee of the Hitchcock Foundation, a trustee of the Whitney Trust, and a Governor Emeritus of the Green Boundary Club. He was a former member and Past President of the Rotary Club of Aiken, a former member of the Aiken Businessmen's Club, a former trustee of the Phelps Foundation, and honorary trustee of the Friends of Hopelands and Rye Patch, and a fifth year volunteer and former board member of the American Red Cross. He participated in and supported many other civic and charitable organizations throughout his life.

Mr. Salley is survived by his daughter, Sara Salley Wood, and her husband, Michael B. Wood, of Aiken; a niece, Salley R. Carr, of Frogmore, SC; and a great-nephew, Thomas Carr, of Frogmore. He as predeceased by his parents, his two wives, Helen Hoblit Salley, who died in 1989, and Jonatha Todd Salley, who died in 1999; a step-daughter, Julie Marshall Simons; and his sister, Eulalie S. Rutledge.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 2, 2005, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church in Aiken with The Reverend Leon Mozeliak, The Reverend Jerry Dubose, and The Reverend Marty Conner officiating. Interment will follow in Bethany Cemetery. Active casket bearers will be Dr. Harry E. Shealy, Jr., Michael K. Farmer, William H. Tucker, James M. Holly, R. E. Hanna, III, and Michael K. Hatch. Honorary casket bearers will be members of the law firm of Hull Towill Norman Barrett & Salley, members of the Rotary Club of Aiken, and members of the Aiken Businessmen's Club.

Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. on Monday, August 1, 2005, at George Funeral Homes Historic Downtown Chapel, 211 Park Avenue, SW, Aiken. Memorials may be made to the Aiken Chapter of the American Red Cross, Post Office Box 384, Aiken, SC 29802, the Hitchcock Foundation, Post Office Box 1702, Aiken, SC, 29802, or the University of South Carolina Educational Foundation (-) Aiken Partnership for inclusion in the Julian B. Salley, Jr. Endowment Fund for the maintenance of the Pickens-Salley house on the Aiken campus.

Teddy Lowell Sansbury

LITTLE RIVER Following a courageous struggle, Teddy Lowell Sansbury, age 78, of Little River, passed away peacefully Saturday, July 29, 2005, with his loving family by his side.

A son of the late Cecil and Floy Sansbury of Darlington County, SC, he was predeceased by four brothers and two sisters.

Ted is survived by his wife, Katherine; a son, Donald Sansbury of Albany, GA; three daughters, Edie Sansbury-White and her husband, Randy, of Pawley's Island, SC, Carolyn Negilski of Colorado Springs, CO, and Hope Sansbury of Wilmington, NC; his grandchildren, Katie, Travis, Kristen and Erin; great-grandchildren, Kevin and Jacob; a brother, Allen Sansbury; and his sisters, Jean Elvington, Bernice Fiss and Myrtle Windham.

A celebration of Ted's life will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 2, 2005, at the Wampee Baptist Church, 9530 Hwy. 90, Longs, SC, with Pastor Michael Vipperman officiating. Fellowship with his family will follow the celebration. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Ted's name may be made to Tidelands Hospice, 2591 N. Fraser St., Georgetown, SC 29442 or the Wampee Baptist Church. Grand Strand Funeral Home and Crematory of Myrtle Beach is serving the family.

Robert L. Shuford

HONOLULU, Hawaii A memorial service for MSG Robert L. Shuford, U.S. Army Reserve, 45, formerly of Columbia, S.C., will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Kilbourne Park Baptist Church, 4205 Kilbourne Road, Columbia, S.C. 29206. Memorials may be made to Kilbourne Park Baptist Church or to Carolina Children's Home, 3201 Trenholm Road, Columbia, S.C. 29204.

Mr. Shuford died Monday, July 25, 2005. Born in Columbia, he was a son of Edward K. and Miriam Shuford. A graduate of Hammond Academy in Columbia, he served six years in the U.S. Marine Corps and later in the Army Reserve. At the time of his death, he was director of homeland security for the Army Reserve in Hawaii.

Mr. Shuford was a member of Kilbourne Park Baptist Church.

Surviving are his parents of Columbia; brother and sister-in-law, Ronald and Cindy Shuford of West Columbia; and nephew, Aaron Shuford and niece, Angela Shuford.

Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, Columbia, is assisting the family.

Dr. Joel Townsend

RICHMOND, Va. Dr. Joel Ives Townsend, 84, died July 29, 2005, at Imperial Manor in Richmond.

Born August 20, 1920, in Greenwood, S.C., he was a son of the late Joel Ives Sr. and Emma Cothran Townsend. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of South Carolina in 1941. There after he taught school before entering the U.S. Navy in 1942. He served as a Lt. on the USS Ingersol in the Pacific where he was in combat at several battles including Okanawa. After WW II he studied genetics at the University of California, Berkley, CA, before obtaining his doctorate from Columbia University in 1950.

Dr. Townsend taught Human Genetics at the University of Tennessee before relocating at the Medical College of Virginia (now Virginia Commonwealth University) in 1960, where he taught a significant portion of the human genetics curriculum to almost every medical and dental student for over three decades. He formed many strong personal relationships with his students.

Dr. Townsend was a forceful and articulate advocate of shared university governance and academic freedom for universities in general and for the Virginia Commonwealth, in particular. He participated in the founding Virginia Commonwealth University's Faculty Senate and served as its president. He was a driving force behind the VCU's Chapter of the American Association of University Professors.

He was active in the State AAUP Conference and the formation of the Faculty Senate of Virginia. For 15 years he administered the awarding of AAUP's Conference's Jackson-Davis Award for service to higher education.

Dr. Townsend was an active member of the Sons of the Confederacy, S.C. Historical Society, The Hugenot Society of S.C., the Richmond Civil War Roundtable, the Richmond Coin Club and the Jamestown Society. He traveled widely and was an avid and knowledgeable collector of a wide range of early American artifacts and prints. He established the Semi-Annual Townsend Lecture Series at the University of South Carolina, honoring his parents, featuring Biological Sciences on Humanities and Southern Heritage and Culture. In addition, Dr. Townsend established several scholarships at the University of South Carolina.

He is survived by a niece, Anne Breazeale Hadden and husband, Morris Hadden of Kingsport, TN; a brother-in-law, Thomas Clarence Breazeale of Clemson; a great-nephew, Robert Morris Hadden and wife, Shelley Hassell Hadden, of Charleston and their children, Emma Elizabeth, Evelyn Anne and Thomas Grant Hadden.

He was predeceased by a sister, Anne Townsend Breazeale of Knoxville, TN.

Funeral services were held in Magnolia Cemetery, Greenwood, S.C. on Sunday, July 31, at 2 p.m. Following the service, there was a reception at the home of Jack and Lydia Wofford, 312 Grace Street, Greenwood, S.C. Also, a memorial service will be held in Richmond, Va., on August 20th at 11 a.m. at Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Avenue, followed by a reception at the Jefferson Hotel.

The body is at Blyth Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the University of South Carolina McKissick Museum, 816 Bull Street, Columbia, SC 29208.

Thomas Weed

WINNSBORO Funeral services for Thomas Edward Weed, age 48, were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, July 31, 2005, at Winnsboro First Pentecostal Holiness Church, conducted by Rev. Walter Rutland and Rev. Bobby Blackman. Visitation was held Saturday night at Pope Funeral Home. The family is at the home in Great Falls on 36 Canal St.

Born April 8, 1957, in Fairfield County, Mr. Weed was the son of Peggy S. Weed and the late Bobby Lee Weed. Mr. Weed died Thursday, July 28, 2005, in Chester Regional Medical Center. Mr. Weed had worked in the produce department with the Bi-Lo food stores and had preached at several churches.

In addition to his mother, Mr. Weed is survived by brothers, Michael A. Weed of West Columbia, Donnie L. Weed of Cheraw; a sister, Melissa Weed of Great Falls and several nieces and nephews.

Pope Funeral Home of Winnsboro is serving the Weed family.

MONDAY DEATHS (August 1)

Ira Duke Avinger

VANCE Mr. Ira Duke Avinger, 85, of 446 Avinger Drive, Vance, died Sunday, July 31, 2005 at The Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg.

The funeral will be 11 o'clock Wednesday at the Providence United Methodist Church with Rev. Karen Starr and Rev. Kenneth Newton officiating. Burial will follow in the Avinger Cemetery near Santee. The casket will be placed in the church at 10 o'clock.

Pallbearers will be Dean Mullinax, Brian Mullinax, Matthew Avinger, Vince Seadale, Carlton Fraylick, and Chuck Avinger.

Mr. Avinger was bona in Vance, a son of the late William Augustus Avinger and Blanche Dukes Avinger. He was a member of Providence United Methodist Church, retired fanner, state constable, and honorary game warden. Mr. Avinger donated the land for Hebron Grace Home and also donated some for Heritage Trail Property. He also enjoyed his pilot's license, hunting and fishing. Mr. Avinger was known for his knowledge for raising rescued wildlife including deer, alligators, and reptiles.

Mr. Avinger was preceded in death by brothers, George E., Laurie W. arid I. Ned Avinger, and also a grandson, John Bates, Jr.

Surviving are his wife, Mona Newton Avinger of the home; daughters, Irene A. (Vince) Seadale of Elloree, Linda M. (Ron) West of Ontario, Canada; a son, Ira D. (Betty) Avinger, Jr. of Summerville; grandchildren, Dean and Brian Mullinax, Traci McIntire, Katie and Matthew Avinger; arid four greatgrandchildren.

Friends may call at Avinger Funeral Home in Holly Hill from 6 to 8 PM Tuesday, and other times at the home.

Joan Loretta Beard

COLUMBIA A graveside service for Joan Loretta Beard, 72, will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Greenlawn Memorial Park with Rev. Eric Sloan officiating. Greenlawn Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Jackson Heights, N.Y., to John and Gladys McAdams Finn, she died July 27, 2005. Surviving are her loving husband of 49 years, Julian Beard; daughters, Stacey Beard and Rhonda Fonder; one grandchild.

Brutus Parven Blakeney PAGELAND Mr. Blakeney died Saturday, July 30, 2005, at Autumn Care Nursing Center in Marshville, N.C.

Born January 15, 1912, he was the son of the late Lewis Alexander and Arena Allen Blakeney and widower of Eula Mae Whitaker Blakeney. A veteran of WWII, he served in North Africa, Sicily and Italy. He was a retired printer, having worked with the Lancaster News. Mr. Blakeney was a member of First Baptist Church for 79 years, the last charter member of the Millon Tucker Sunday Sunday School Class, the American Legion Post 92 and the Mt. Moriah Lodge #58. Members of his Sunday School class will be honorary pallbearers in his funeral.

He is survived by a number of nieces and nephews. A service of remembrance will be Monday, August 1, 2005, at First Baptist Church of Pageland at 2 p.m. The family will receive friends Sunday from 6-7 p.m. at Sutton Funeral Home in Pageland.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 126, Pageland, SC 29728.
