Dorothy Ellis

FLORENCE Dorothy Stroud Grimsley Ellis died Saturday, July 30, 2005, in a local hospital after an extended illness.

Funeral services will be 4 p.m. Monday, August 1, 205, at Calvary Baptist Church, directed by Waters-Powell Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home of Susan Cantey, 503 S. Cashua Drive, Florence.

Mrs. Ellis was born November 16, 1916, in Pensacola, Florida, the daughter of Paul and Virgie Henson Stroud. She moved to Chester, S.C., at an early age. Mrs. Ellis graduated as Valedictorian from Chester High School. She attended Coker College for two years and graduated from Winthrop College cum laude with a BS in Music. Mrs. Ellis was Supervisor of Public School Music in Florence for two years before she married Charles Kenneth Grimsley, Judge of Probate and Family Court, on October 6, 1939 (her mother and father's 30th wedding anniversary). After the death of Judge Grimsley in 1969, she married Charles Meyer Ellis Sr. in 1974.

Mrs. Ellis was a charter member of Calvary Baptist Church, a charter member of the Terpsichorean Dance Club, past member of the Florence Country Club, current member of the Country Club of South Carolina, past president of the Musical Arts Club, past president of Aurora Literary Club, past president of Wildwood Garden Club, past president of Florence Judges' Club and past president of the National Accredited Master Judge of Flower Shows. Mrs. Ellis directed the junior choirs at Immanuel Baptist Church and directed the junior and senior choirs at Calvary Baptist Church. She played the organ and piano for many services.

Mrs. Ellis is survived by her children, C. Kenneth (Dayle) Grimsley Jr., Paul Stroud Grimsley, and Susan Grimsley (Harry) Cantey; grandchildren, Ginnie Williamson, George Williamson, Stroud Grimsley and Will Grimsley; stepdaughter, Peggy Ellis (Bill) Clary; stepson, Charles M. (Jan) Ellis Jr.; stepgrandchildren, Matt (Nette) Clary and Debbie (Brian) Taylor; three stepgreat-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, 915 Cherokee Road, Florence, SC 29501; St. John's Episcopal Church, 252 S. Dargan St., Florence, SC 29501 or McLeod Hospice, 555 E. Cheves St., Florence, SC 29506.

Annette L. Fitts

COLUMBIA Services for Annette Lee Fitts, 46, will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, August 2, 2005, in Harmony Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. Gary Farmer, with burial to follow at the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to Harmony Baptist Church, 1959 Woodtrail Rd., Gaston, SC 29053. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8pm Monday at Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington.

Mrs. Fitts died Friday, July 29, 2005. Born in Charleston, she was a daughter of Edith Cattles Lee and the late Rushton L. Lee. She was a member of Harmony Baptist Church.

Surviving are her mother of Charleston; husband, George Herbert Fitts of Lexington; grandmother, Alma Cattles of N. Charleston; brothers, James Lee of Hanahan, Carl Lee and Mark Lee, both of N. Charleston, and Jerry Lee of Gastonia, N.C. She was predeceased by brothers, Randy Lee and Milton Lee; sister, Frances Gean; and twin sister, Jeanette Lee.

Donnie Gainey

HARTSVILLEA graveside service for Donnie Gene Gainey, 50, will be held at 11 a.m. in Damascus Cemetery. Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Darlington Co. to John and EttaRee Freeman Gainey, he died July 29, 2005. Surviving are wife, Lynn Kelly Gainey; children, Gene Kelly, Ronnie, Archie Watford, Danelle Gainey Gilbert, Candace Cook; siblings, Gloria Brunson, Sandra Kelly, Wanda, Jimmy, Larry Gainey; grandchildren, Kayleigh Gilbert and Kelsey Watford.

Martha Gladden

GREAT FALLS Martha Varnadore Gladden, 80, of 16202 State Highway 200, Great Falls, widow of Mr. Silas L. Gladden, died Saturday, July 30, 2005, at Life Care Center in Columbia, S.C. Services are 11 a.m. Monday ,August 1, 2005, at Dantzler-Baker Funeral Home with interment in Greenlawn Cemetery, Great Falls, S.C. Rev. Greg Batchelor will officiate.

Born January 4, 1925, in Chester County, she was a daughter of George Reid Varnadore (deceased) and Edna Castles Varnadore. She attended schools of Great Falls, had retired from J.P. Stevens Co. and was a member of First Baptist Church of Great Falls.

Survivors: two daughters, Maxcine Ellis of Lugoff, S.C. and Linda York of Lugoff, S.C.; four grandchildren, Brian Ellis of Denver, CO, Jaman Ellis of Lugoff, SC, Billy Campbell of Elgin, SC and Tracey Campbell of Columbia; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Ralph C. "Buddy" Varnadore Sr. of Great Falls, SC; one sister, Sarah V. Franklin of Great Falls, SC.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Care of Tri-County, 111 Executive Pointe Blvd., Columbia, SC 29210.

The family received friends Sunday at Dantzler-Baker Funeral Home, 26 Underwood Ave., Great Falls.

A. W. Hallman

LEESVILLE Services for US Navy Ret. MCPO Arthur Wesley Hallman, 80, will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday from Oak Grove Baptist Church, Aiken County, with the Rev. Kenneth Weathers and Rev. Garth Hill officiating. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Ridge Crest Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to Oak Grove Baptist Church, 1721 Old 96 Indian Trail Batesburg SC 29006.

Visitation will be Monday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Barr-Price Funeral Home Historic BL Chapel.

MCPO Hallman was born in Fredonia (Lexington County) a son of the late Arthur H. and BeulahMaeBedenbaugh Hallman. He was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church Aiken County, was a US Navy Retired Master Chief Petty Officer with 26 years of service andwas retired from atesburg Water Works with 26 years of service. He was a member ofFRA, Non Commissioned OfficersAssoc., American Military Society, American Legion Post # 61, DAV Chapter # 51, National Rifle Assoc., Sons of Confederate Veterans General Paul Quattlebaum Camp, and Water and Pollution Control Assoc. of SC.

Surviving are his wife, Jessie Ruth McGee Hallman; sons, Keith C. Hallman of Batesburg; Vernon W., Jan T. and Gene A. Hallman of Leesville; a daughter, Ann M. Givens of Lexington; a brother, M. C. Hallman of Monetta; sisters, Cathryn Jaroe of Sumter, Rena Shealy of Leesville, Frances Shealy of Irmo; 6 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.

He was predeceased by sisters, Eloise Stone, Faye Burgess, Dorothy Evans.

Dorothy Holt

SUMTER Dorothy Jane Kennedy Holt, 78, wife of Russell Meredith Holt Jr., died Friday, July 29, 2005, in Tuomey Health Care Systems.

She was the daughter of the late James Oscar Kennedy and the late Edna Friar Kenney. Mrs. Holt was twice married, first to the late Charles Phifer and then to Mr. Russell M. Holt Jr.

Mrs. Holt was educated at the University of South Carolina and was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, where she serve on the administrative board, was a Sunday School teacher and Circle leader. Mrs. Holt was a member of the Sumter Art Association, Trian Club, Sumter Garden Club and a sustaining member of the Junior Welfare League.

Surviving are her husband, a daughter, Melanie Holt Brannon and her husband, Barney, of Charlotte, N.C.; a son, Russell Kennedy Holt and his wife, Nancy, of Columbia; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A daughter, Diane Holt Warren, preceded her in death.

Memorial service will be held 4 p.m. Monday, August 1, 2005, at Trinity United Methodist Church with the Rev. Stephen Taylor officiating.

The family will receive friends in the parlor of the church following the service.

Victoria Kerr

SPARTANBURG Victoria Howie Kerr, 102, formerly of 74 Woodburn Rd. Spartanburg, SC, resident of Abbeville Nursing Home and widow of J. Davis (son) Kerr died Sunday July 31, 2005 at the nursing home. She was born in Chester, SC June 8, 1903, and was a daughter of the late Torrance Victor and Cora Dry Howie. Victoria Howie was raised in Abbeville, SC. She was a 1919 graduate of Abbeville High School and 1923 Agnes Scott College. She was an educator in South Carolina public schools for over 40 years, spending most of those years at Spartanburg High School. She was married to the late John Davis (son) Kerr, a noted Spartanburg attorney. She was a member of First Presbyterain Church of Spartanburg. She was also active in many civic and social organizations including: Daughters of the American Revolution, the Spartanburg Book Club, the Assembly of Spartanburg, Beaux Arts of Spartanburg, The Study Club, and the Spartanburg Ballet Guild. She and her husband were charter members of the Piedmont Club as well as members of the Spartanburg Country Club. She was a generous contributor to many churches as well as colleges, charities and organizations. She was preceded in death by sisters Elizabeth Howie and Ruth Howie Plaster, brothers Thomas Dry Howie, Sanford Howie, Ralph (Buster) Howie and Franklin (Tige) Howie. She was the last member of her immediate family. She is survive by neices Sally Howie McDevitt, Vicki Plaster Whitelock, Wonda Howie Evans, Gene Howie Butler, Ruth Howie Bacon, and Hannah Howie Dias, nephews Sanford Howie, Ted Howie, and Tom Howie. She is also survived by her loving sister-in-law Eugenia Howie Milford and numerous grand and great neices and nephews. The body is at The Chandler-Jackson Funeral Home. Graveside services will be conducted Tuesday Aug. 2, 2005 at 3:00 p.m. from Long Cane Cemetery with Dr. Michael Bush officiating. The family is at the home of Mrs. Eugenia Milford 502 Chestnut St. Abbeville, SC. Memorials may be made to Abbeville Presbyterain Church 301 N. Main St. Abbeville, SC 29620 or to a charity of one's choice. The Chandler-Jackson Funeral Home, Abbeville, SC is in charge of arrangements.

Annie Hobbs McCloud

COLUMBIAA homegoing service for Annie Hobbs McCloud will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Church of God, College Drive, with burial to follow in Serenity Memorial Gardens. Bostick-Tompkins Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Estill to Ed and Lottie Washington Hobbs, she died July 26, 2005. Surviving are children, James, Franklin, Alinzo McCloud, Mary Thomas, Patricia Boykin, Doris Snipes, Laverne Rogers; sister, Genieve Harris; a host of grandchildren.

Mills Cleveland "Clevie" Parker

NEW ZION Mr. Mills Cleveland "Clevie" Parker, 54, husband of Shirley Floyd Parker, died Friday, July 29, 2005.

Mr. Parker was born in Williamsburg County, a son of the late O'Neal and Norma Mae Harrington Parker. He was a farmer and owner-operator of Workman's Grocery.

Survivors include: his wife, Shirley Floyd Parker of New Zion; two daughters, Hillary Parker and Melissa Parker, both of New Zion; one son, Rodney Parker of New Zion; one brother, Eddie (Marilyn) Parker of Orangeburg; two sisters, Mickie (J.W.) Evans of Bluffton and Patsy (Barry) Shuler of Sumter; a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 1, 2005, at Midway Presbyterian Church with burial in the church cemetery.

The family will have visitation from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Brockington Funeral Home, Lake City, is in charge.

Mr. Raymond Randolph, Jr.

COLUMBIA Funeral Services for Mr. Raymond Randolph, Jr., 35, of K-9 Allen Benedict Ct. will be held Tuesday, August 2, 2005, at 3:00 p.m. at Friendship Baptist Church House St. with interment in the Palmetto Cemetery. A. A. Dicks Funeral Home, Sullivan Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Randolph was a son of Mary Finch and Raymond Randolph.

Survivors include his wife, April Sims Randolph, his parents, Mary Finch and Raymond Raudolph; stepmother, Linda Randolph, ; one son, James Sims; two brothers, Demetrius and Taravol Stafford; two sisters, Sharon Randolph and Estille Smith; paternal grandmother, Mamie Randolph and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Julius Smith Jr.

HOPKINS Funeral services for Julius Smith, Jr., 86 of 5840 Highbee Rd, will be held 3 p.m. Tuesday, August 2, 2005 at New Light Beulah Baptist Church with Reverend Gregory Cunningham, officiating. Interment will follow in Church Cemetery. Visitation will be held this evening from 3-9 p.m. J.P.Holley Funeral Home, Garners Ferry Rd. Chapel is in charge.

Mr. Smith was the son of the late Julius, Sr. and Josephine Anderson Smith. He was a member of New Light Beulah Baptist Church, where he attended faithfully until his health declined.

He is survived by a son, Thomas (Mary; Tillman, sisters, Alberta S. (Nehemiah) Johnson, and Julia M. Addison, brother, Henry J. (Dorothy) Smith. 11 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

Wendell "Archie" Richardson Sr.

WEST COLUMBIA Services for Wendell "Archie" Richardson Sr. will be noon Tuesday at Brookland Baptist Church with burial in Gibson Cemetery. Visitation is 6-7 tonight at Jones Metropolitan Funeral Home. Born in Lexington Co. to Archie and Essie Mae Richardson, he died July 29, 2005. Surviving are wife, Betty Richardson; children, Joanne Bradley, Gloria Fontinez, Wendell Jr., James Edward, Willie Richardson; siblings, Gwendolyn Dervin, Patricia Tucker, Lonnie Richardson; 9 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild.

Ralph Voreis Jr.

ORANGEBURG Ralph Chester Voreis Jr. died Saturday in Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg, July 30, 2005.

Graveside services are 11 a.m. Monday, August 1, 2005, in Crestlawn Memorial Gardens.

Survivors: wife, Mrs. Joyce B. Voreis of Orangeburg; son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Suzanne Voreis of Taylors; two daughters, Mrs. Charles (Peggy) McMurray of Lexington and Mrs. Richard E. (Linda) Parker of Irmo; three grandchildren, Chad McMurray of Florence, Carrie McMurray of Lexington and Amanda Parker of Irmo.

Memorials may be made to the Shriners Children's Hospital, 950 West Faris Road, Greenville, SC 296054277.

Visitation was Sunday at Thompson Funeral Home of Orangeburg.
