WEST COLUMBIA — Services for James Frank Backman, 78, of West Columbia, SC, will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 10, 2006, at First Church of the Nazarene of West Columbia, officiated by Rev. Bill Harmon. Burial will follow in Woodridge Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday at Thompson Funeral Home of West Columbia. Memorials may be made to First Church of the Nazarene of West Columbia Building Fund or to the American Cancer Society.

Mr. Backman died Wednesday, June 7, 2006. Born in Cayce, SC, he was the son of the late Clifton L. Backman, Sr. and Betty Farrell Backman. He attended First Church of the Nazarene of West Columbia and had retired from Aker Motor Lines.

Surviving are his wife, Sarah Snelgrove Backman of West Columbia; daughters, Barbara Ballard of Lexington, Leverne Pound of West Columbia; son, Billy Backman of Columbia; sisters, Nioma Blacock and Erlene Deese, and brothers, C.L. Backman, Jr. and Pete Backman, all of Cayce; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Mr. Backman was preceded in death by a son, Frankie Backman and a grandson, Terry Backman.

Alonzo Ashford
WINNSBORO — Services for Mr. Alonzo Ashford Sr. will be held at 3 p.m. June 10, 2006, at St. Matthews Baptist Church #1. Mr. Ashford is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mrs. Marian Ashford; one daughter, Veronica Ashford; and five sons, Alonzo Jr., Eddie, Kenneth, Vernon and Ricky Ashford. Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 9, 2006, at Glover’s Memorial Chapel.

Dr. William Waymer
ORANGEBURG — Dr. William “Baby Boy” Waymer of Orangeburg died Tuesday, June 6, 2006, at his residence. Dr. Waymer was born August 28, 1939, in Orangeburg, South Carolina, to the Rev. Wade Waymer and Evan Brandyburg Waymer. He was a graduate of Christ the King Elementary School, Wilkinson High School and Claflin University. He received a Ph.D. in Higher Education from Florida State University. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1959 and was selected as “Soldier of the Month.”

His work experiences included: teacher, J.B. Beck Elementary School, Georgetown, SC; Executive Director, Albany Urban League, Albany, Georgia; teacher, Felton Laboratory School; assistant director, 1890 Research and Extension, Director of Alumni Affairs, Director of Research Rural Development, Youth Director of Student Affairs, SCSU; Director of Development, SCSU. He was a member of the South Carolina Education Association and the National Education Association. His church affiliations were St. Luke Presbyterian Church (USA), where he served as Chairman of the Deacon Board and the Unger Action Enabler of Charleston Atlantic Presbytery. He was an active member of Omega Psi Psi Fraternity, Inc., Phi Delta Kappa and Toastmasters, Inc. Dr. Waymer founded and directed The Orangeburg Area Pageant.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Delores “Mitzi” Waymer Kearse. As a loving husband, father, grandfather and uncle, he was dedicated to God, family and friends and will be deeply missed by those he leaves behind: a loving and devoted wife of 43 years, Roberta Rhue Waymer; daughters, Angela Waymer (Stephen) Peters, Brandy Waymer (Aaron) Davis; son, Wade Anthony (Zelda) Waymer; sister, Gloria Waymer (George) Dean; sister-in-law, Mary (NY) Covington; aunt, Georgia Waymer Swett; six grandchildren, Xavier and Maya Williams, Arrington, Aadan and Eden Davis, and William Drake Waymer; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 10, 2006, at St. Luke Presbyterian Church, 324 Mingo Street. The Reverend Doctor J. Herbert Nelson II of Memphis, Tenn., will be officiating. The wake will be held Friday, June 9, 2006, at the church. Burial will be in Belleville Memorial Gardens. Friends may call at the residence and Bythewood Funeral Home.

Richard Leighton Rael
COPE — Richard Leighton Rael, 17, died Wednesday.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 10, 2006, at St. George Baptist Church at the R.O.C. in Orangeburg with burial in Crestlawn Memorial Gardens in Orangeburg. Visitation will be held 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday at Thompson Funeral Home, Inc. in Orangeburg.

Ricardo Antonio Rickard
COLUMBIA — Services for Ricardo “Carlo” Antonio Rickard, 32, are 11 a.m. Saturday New Laurel St. Baptist Church, entombment in Elmwood Cemetery. Visitation is 2-8 today at Pearson’s F.H. Born in Columbia to Shirley Rickard and Johnny Maxwell, he died June 6, 2006. Surviving: mother; stepfather, Robert Ryans Jr.; father; siblings, Monica Jacobs, Lisa Stewart, Akeem, Rasheed Lewis; others.

Pauline Raymond Mercier
WEST COLUMBIA — Pauline Marie Raymond Mercier, 90, entered into eternal rest, Wednesday, June 7, 2006. Born in Hampton, NH, the daughter of Charles and Annie T Raymond, she married Joseph D. Mercier in 1939. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Columbia, SC.

Surviving are her children, Mary Paula Rich of Cayce, SC, Joseph Richard (Sandy) Mercier, FL; granddaughter, Jacqueline Michelle Lorick; three stepgrandchildren, Amy, Chris and Katie; three great-grandchildren, Jared, Jada and Julie; brother, William (Jeanine) Raymond, FL; two special nieces, Paula Fowler and Nancy Shanklin and other nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be Saturday, June 10, 2006, in Charlotte Memorial Gardens, Punta Gorda, FL, which is in charge. Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, West Columbia is handling local arrangements.

Special gratitude and thanks go to NHC-Lexington, 2993 Sunset Blvd., West Columbia, SC 29169 and Hospice Care of Tri-County, 166 Stoneridge Drive, Columbia, SC 29210, for all the compassionate comfort, care and concern that were extended to Mrs. Mercier. Memorials may be made to these.

Rena Mcgee
GAFFNEY — Verene “Rena” Polk McGee, 70, of 1002 Briarwood Street, went home to be with the Lord Thursday, June 8, 2006, at her residence.

Born in Estill, SC, she was the widow of the late George Edward McGee and daughter of the late Clarence Polk and Rosa Lee Smith Polk. She was a homemaker and a member of New Covenant Church.

Surviving are two sons, Edward Clary McGee and wife, Debra, Don W. McGee; one daughter, Catherine M. Rayfield, all of Gaffney; five grandchildren, Evan C. Rayfield, Afton E. Rayfield, Ethan Travis McGee, Jessica T. McGee and Edward Blake McGee.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Friday, June 9, 2006, at Blakely Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, June 10, 2006, at the Blakely Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Rev. Ken Covington. Interment will follow in Oakland Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Meals on Wheels, P.O. Box 1886, Gaffney, SC 29342 or to Peachtree Ministries, 518 N. Limestone Street, Gaffney, SC 29340.

UNION — Services for Alonzo “Mac” McMorris, 80, WWII veteran, 2 p.m. Sunday at Bethesda Baptist Church, burial and Masonic rites to follow. Gibson & Brown F.H. is in charge. Born to John and Mittie Foster McMorris, he died June 6, 2006. Surviving are wife, Susie McMorris; children, Alonzo, Dorothy McMorris, Bobbie Mullins, Rose Crosby, Drucilla Peake, Bernice Dawkins; brother, Cleophus McMorris.

Donna J. Graham
WEST COLUMBIA — Services for Donna Jean Graham, 53, of West Columbia, SC, will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, June 10, 2006, in the Chapel of Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington, officiated by Rev. Steve Kittrell. Burial will follow in Laurel Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Laurel Baptist Church, 2250 Pine St., West Columbia, SC 29170.

Mrs. Graham died Thursday, June 8, 2006. Born in Columbia, SC, she was a daughter of the late Hillard Robert Williams and Evelyn Inez Axson Williams. Mrs. Graham was a member of Laurel Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband, Charlie Graham of West Columbia; daughter and son-in-law, Delia and Randall Oxner of Gaston; son, Donald James Smith, Jr. of Wilmington, NC; sisters, Doris Fletcher of Pine Ridge, Debra Brown of Pelion; brothers, H.R. Williams and James Henry Williams, both of South Congaree; Donald Williams of Gaston; 12 grandchildren.

Billie Florence Lott
SWANSEA — Memorial services for Mrs. Bille Florence Lott will be held Saturday, June 10, 2006, at 4 p.m. at Sardis Baptist Church, Swansea. South Carolina Cremation & Memorial Society is assisting the family. Memorial contributions may be directed to Sardis Baptist Church, 1601 Saint Matthews Road, Swansea, SC 29160.

Mrs. Lott, 65, of Swansea, died June 8, 2006, at her residence.

Mrs. Lott was born in Savannah, Ga., to the late John Joseph Noguest and Ila Florence Timberlake Bailey. She was a homemaker and a member of Sardis Baptist Church and the Adult III Sunday School Class.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Lott was predeceased by a brother, Joseph Noguest. She is survived by her husband, Donald Lott, Sr.; son, James Evans Lopp; stepsons, Donald Lott, Jr., Shane Lott; stepdaughter, Danielle Webster; brother, John Noguest; grandchildren, Steven Lopp, Ethan Lott, Donald Lott, III, Victoria Lott, Kayla Lott; and nephew, Billy Joe Noguest.

Ralph Davenport
HONEA PATH — Ralph Wade Davenport, 72, of 2024 Hamby Road, husband of Juanita Hamby Davenport, died Wednesday, June 7, 2006.

Born in Cayce, he was the son of the late Irvin R. and Maggie Stockman Davenport. He was a retired truck driver with Mt. Vernon Mills and a member of Friendship Baptist Church.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are two daughters, Christi Powell of Honea Path and Denise Graham of Belton; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; three brothers, Andrew Davenport and Billy Davenport of Cayce and Charles Davenport of Lexington; one sister, Peggy Barker of Boiling Springs.

Services are 11 a.m. Friday at Sullivan-King Mortuary, Northeast Chapel, 3205 N. Hwy. 81. Burial in Garden of Memories at Belton. The family is at the home of Denise Graham, 106 Parkwood Drive, Belton, SC. Memorials may be made to Riverside Living Center, 109 Bentz Road, Piedmont, SC 29673 or Friendship Baptist Church, Friendship Road, Honea Path, SC 29654.

Inez Quillen Thompson
FLORENCE — Funeral services for Mrs. Inez Quillen Thompson will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday, June 9, 2006, at New Ebenezer Baptist Church with interment to follow in Sunset Memory Gardens. She died Monday, June 5, 2006, in Carolinas Transitional Care Unit.

Mrs. Thompson was born in Florence, South Carolina, a daughter of Emanuel and Permella Williamson Quillen. She was educated in the public schools of Florence County and furthered her education at South Carolina State College and Morris College. She taught preschool, first and second grades at Mt. Rona School in the Friendfield Community. She retired as Director of Disability Services of the Pee Dee Community Action Agency Head Start Program.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Fred N. Thompson, and her siblings, Ferdia, Harlie, Leefen, Stephen, Blanch, Roberta, Marco, Frenchie, and Eloise.

Survivors are: her children, Theresa Bernice Davis, Madeline Gertrude Thompson and Howard Davis; a devoted niece, Linda M. Carr; special grandnephews, Darius D. Carr and Eric (Alisha) Carr; special grandniece, Lynnette D. Carr; four special great-grandnephews, Eric, Jr., Sherman, Marco and George; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting memorials be made to the New Ebenezer Baptist Church Senior Missionary Society Mission Project.

Michael Moore
LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. — Michael L. Moore, age 61, of Lawrenceville, Ga., passed away Wednesday, June 7, 2006. He attended The Citadel Military College of South Carolina. He will be deeply missed by his wife of 41 years, Cheryl; his three sons, Mike, Stephen and Cliff; his three grandsons, Michael, Tyler and Jacob. A private service will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations will be accepted at Atlanta Hospice, 1244 Park Vista Drive, Atlanta, GA 30319.

COLUMBIA — Services for Mrs. Eunice Annie Gordon, 85, will be held noon Friday (viewing at 11 a.m.) at Leevy’s Funeral Home, Taylor Street Chapel, with burial in Lincoln Cemetery. Surviving are her daughters, Alice Priutt, Claudette Park, and Janet Brunson, four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium, Sumter, is in charge. Born in Archibald, Pa., to Walter and Alice R. Toczylowski, she died June 5, 2006. Surviving: children, Sidney Geddings III, Sandra Jenkins; grandson; siblings.

Lynwood Canty
SUMTER — Services for Lynwood Canty, 42, 1 p.m. Friday: Canty Memorial COGIC. Entombment: Evergreen Mem. Mausoleum Wake 7-8 tonight: Job’s Mortuary. Born in Tacoma, Wash., to Rev. Eugene & Annie R. Canty, she died June 3, 2006. Surviving: parents; sons, Antwon Canty, Spencer Jackson; siblings, Debra, Earl, Jewell, Walter, Eugene, LeGrand, Keith, Eric, Lula, Phyllis, Delores, Tammy, Princess.

GeDelle Young
GREENWOOD — GeDelle Brabham Young, 92, of Wesley Commons, widow of Martin D. Young, died Tuesday, June 6, 2006, in the Hospice House of Greenwood.

Born October 31, 1913, in Columbia, SC, she was a daughter of the late Vernon and Margaret Cope Brabham. After graduating from Georgia State Woman’s College in Valdosta, GA, Mrs. Young received her master’s degree in Library Science from Emory University. A job as children’s librarian at Richland County Public Library brought her back to Columbia, where she also worked as a librarian at the State Hospital, Columbia High School and University High School. This amazing woman was a humanist, President of the Columbia League of Women Voters, an early civil rights advocate, delegate to two Democratic National Conventions, a master bridge player, avid gardener and world traveler. Mrs. Young had many friends in many places, including Columbia, SC, where she lived for 25 years, Bethesda, MD, The Republic of Panama and Gainesville, FL, where she lived for 27 years. The last five years of her life were spent at Wesley Commons in Greenwood.

Survivors include her son, Martin Young and wife, Lynn, of Houston, TX; daughter, Margaret Y. Anderson and husband, Jim, of Ninety Six: four grandchildren, Elizabeth Young Abell and husband, Matt, of Denver and Houston, Perrin Anderson and wife, Amy, of Ninety Six, Jennings Anderson of Columbia, and Andrew Young of Houston, TX; one great-grandchild, Sophia Anderson of Ninety Six; and brother Vernon Brabham, Jr. of Jasper, GA.

Memorial services will be conducted Saturday at 11 a.m. from the Wesley Commons Library with Reverend Sandra King officiating. Interment will be in Moultrie, GA.

The family is at the home of her daughter, Margaret Anderson, 2020 Ninety Six Highway, Ninety Six, SC.

Those desiring may make memorials to Hospice Care of the Piedmont, 408 West Alexander Ave., Greenwood, SC 29646 in memory of Mrs. Young.

Mary Alyne Gunter
COLUMBIA — Mary Alyne Gunter, a gentle lady, died Tuesday, June 6, 2006, in Columbia.

Mrs. Gunter was born February 8, 1917, in Aiken County, S.C., the daughter of the late Alvie Wilson Booth and Orissa Gunter Booth. She was the widow of Francis Clyde Gunter. She was a graduate of Lander College and a former teacher.

Surviving are her daughters, Ms. Diane Russell of Columbia and Mrs. Rose Anna Soorus of Dorr, Michigan; son-in-law, Armas Soorus; brother, Herman Booth of Columbia; sisters, Mrs. Louise Taylor and Mrs. Betty Clonts, both of Columbia. She was predeceased by a sister, Mrs. Alma Booth Moss.

Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Friday at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. Funeral services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at the funeral home with burial in Evergreen Cemetery, Sumter, S.C. Memorials may be made to Greenlawn Baptist Church, 6612 Garners Ferry Road, Columbia, SC 29209.
