COLUMBIA — Services for Mr. Joseph M. Taylor, of 1304 Hendrix St., will be held 3 p.m. Friday at Palmer Memorial Chapel, with burial in Elizabethtown, Kentucky. Palmer Memorial Chapel is in charge.

Mr. Taylor died Tuesday, June 6, 2006. Born in Elizabethtown, Kentucky, he was the son of the late Joseph E. and Frances Barbour Taylor. He served and retired honorably from the U.S. Air Force.

Surviving are his former wife, Nadine S. Taylor; sons, Aaron G. and Joseph T. (Elizabeth) Taylor; sister, Elizabeth (Edward) Griffin; and two grandchildren.

Beverly Ann Keefer Best
LUGOFF — Beverly Ann Keefer Best, age 76, passed away June 2, 2006, after an extended illness, in Lugoff, SC, where she had resided the past five years. She spent the majority of her life in Canton, OH, where she was born December 15, 1929. She was the daughter of the late George and Martha Keefer, and was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Edward Best; daughter, Martha Halkias; and sister, Betty Worth. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Jeffery and Faye Best of Slidell, LA; son-in-law, John Halkias of Lugoff, SC; grandson, Christopher Best of Slidell, LA; three granddaughters and their spouses, Michelle and Benton Roberts of Slidell, LA, Adrienne and David Harless of Evans, GA, and Amanda and Matt McGuff of Elgin, SC; three great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be Saturday, June 10, 2006, at 1 p.m. at Reed Funeral Home Canton Chapel, 705 Raff Road SW Canton, OH 44710. Burial will be in Fort Laurens Cemetery, in Bolivar, OH. Calling hours will be Friday June 9, 2006, from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Elise F. Ward
LAKE CITY — Mrs. Elise F. Ward, 86, widow of Curtis L. Ward, died Monday, June 5, 2006, in an Aiken hospital.

Mrs. Ward was born in Lake City, a daughter of the late Carl D. and Lillie Thigpen Floyd. She was a graduate of Scranton High School and a loyal member of Lake City United Methodist Church where she was in the Lula Shaw Epps Sunday School Class. Her greatest pleasures in life came from doing things for others, preparing elaborate meals for family and friends, and growing and nurturing flowers that made her yard a showplace of color through the years.

Survivors include one daughter, Sylvia W. Kennerly and husband, Gordon, of Aiken; sons, Ray Ward of Lake City, Ronald Ward and wife, Karen, of Indian Wells, CA, and Daniel Ward of Orlando, FL; grandson, Lewis Kennerly, Jr. and wife, Christy, of Cordova and two great-grandchildren; sisters, Janet Ayers of Darlington and Marjorie Gohlic of Dewey, AZ, Helen Nettles of El Cajon, CA; and a brother, Gerald Floyd of Columbia.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 8, 2006, at Lake City United Methodist Church with burial in Lake City Memorial Park.

Brockington Funeral Home, Lake City, is in charge.

Lewis Simpson
GIFFORD — Services for Lewis Simpson, 42, will be 11 a.m. Friday at Macedonia Baptist Church, burial in Grounder Cemetery, viewing: noon-8 p.m. (wake 7-8 p.m.) today at M.F. Riley’s Funeral Home, Fairfax. Born in Screven Co. Ga., to Walter and Elise Simpson, he died June 3, 2006. Surviving: mother; siblings, James Jr. and Nathaniel Fuller, Ricky and Douglas Wright, Carl and Michael Simpson, Mary Ellen Ruth.

Ben J. McIver
SWANSEA — Ben J. McIver, 77, of Swansea, died Monday, June 5, 2006.

Mr. McIver was born in Lexington County, a son of the late Tull and Mabell Copeland McIver. He was a Navy veteran. He was a retired brickmason. He was a member of the American Legion and Ebenezer United Methodist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Craig McIver of Swansea, and Steve McIver of South Congaree; a brother, Tull McIver of Swansea; a granddaughter, Crystal Rodgers of Lexington; and one great-granddaughter, Brittney Rodgers of Lexington.

The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Thursday at Culler-McAlhany Funeral Home in North, followed by a funeral service at 8 p.m.

Benjamin David Hawkins
NORTH CHARLESTON — Benjamin David Hawkins, 24, of Charleston, SC, beloved son of Laura Wall (formerly Hawkins) died over the Memorial Day weekend. He was born June 23, 1981, in Columbia, SC.

Ben was employed by Alutiiq, and was working in New Orleans to help rebuild the city following the devastation of hurricane Katrina. Prior to his employment with Alutiiq, Ben attended Trident Technical College on a full merit scholarship. While attending Fort Dorchester High School, Ben was awarded the Yale Science & Engineering Association Award from Yale University. As quarterback, he set a school record with a 75 yard TD pass against Berkeley High School. In The Citadel Summer Camp program which he attended for six years, Ben was awarded the Mark Clark Award; Wrestling, Sailing and Jr. Olympic NRA Sharpshooter I Marksmanship awards.

Ben was gifted with intelligence, physical grace and a sweet loving heart. He had many lifelong friends. He will be deeply missed by his mother; grandmother, Doris Fox Wall; loving companion, Emile’ Garcia; aunts, uncles and cousins. He is also survived by his father, Glen David Hawkins, and grandfather, Paul Hawkins, Sr. of Charleston. Ben was preceded in death by his grandfather, Major Troy Daniel Wall and grandmother, Catherine Alexandria “Alice” Hawkins.

Funeral service for Benjamin David Hawkins, 24, will be held 2 p.m. Friday, June 9, 2006, in the Chapel of Thompson Funeral Home of West Columbia, officiated by Rev. Dr. Donald West. Interment will follow in Lybrand Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service, 1 until 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

Nona Gladys Sightler
COLUMBIA — A graveside service for Nona Gladys Sightler, 99, will be held 11 a.m. Friday, June 9, 2006, in Melrose Cemetery, Highway 321, Swansea, SC, officiated by Reverend Eric Sloan. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. tonight (Thursday) at Thompson Funeral Home of West Columbia. Memorials may be made to South Beltline Baptist Church, 1505 South Beltline Blvd., Columbia, SC 29205.

Mrs. Sightler died Tuesday, June 6, 2006. Born in Belsano, PA, she was a daughter of the late Oscar L and Bertha Decker Edwards. She was a member of South Beltline Baptist Church.

Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Catherine S. and Toby Castine of Swansea; daughter-in-law, Alma Sightler; nine grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Sightler was preceded in death by sons and daughter-in-law, Jack L. and Jewell Sightler and Russell V. Sightler; brothers, John L. Edwards, and Vinton Edwards.

Ida K. Jackson
UNION — Services for Ida Belle Keasler Jackson, 86, widow of Alonzo Jackson Sr., 11 a.m. Friday: Union Memorial Gardens. Visitation 7-9 tonight: S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home. She died June 7, 2006. Surviving: children, Brenda Berry, Alonzo Jr., Tommy, Terry, Mike Jackson; siblings, Florence Adams, Kathaleen Mosley, Josephine Smith, Billie Ann Howell, J. Roy, Bobby Keasler; grandchild, great-grandchildren.

Beatrice Corrine Shealy
WEST COLUMBIA — Graveside service for Beatrice Corrine Shealy will be held 4 o’clock Friday, June 9, 2006, in Crescent Hill Memorial Gardens. Mr. Kerry Shealy will be officiating. The family will be receiving friends from 5 until 7 Thursday evening at Shives Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Mid-State South Carolina Chapter, P.O. Box 7044, Columbia, SC 29202.

Born in Neeses, SC, she was the daughter of the late George Davis and Alice Joyner. She was formerly a member of Southside Baptist Church and also Harrison Road Baptist Church. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and friend to all who knew her.

Survivors include a son, Dick Shealy and wife, Dot, of Irmo; grandsons, Ricky Shealy, Jr. and wife, Stacy, of Blythwood and Michael Shealy of Irmo; great-grandsons, Colton Shealy and Blake Hall; brother, Roy “Bo” Davis and wife, Dot, of West Columbia and Farris H. Davis of Lexington. Those who preceded her in death include her husband of 59 years, Grady W. Shealy.

George Williams
COLUMBIA — Homegoing Service for George T. Williams will be held 1 p.m. Friday at Bostick-Tompkins Funeral Home with burial to follow in Serenity Memorial Gardens. Mr. Williams died June 4, 2006. Born in Newberry, he was a son of Horace and Ruth Coleman Williams. Surviving are his siblings, Rose Staten, Shallanah Martae, Linda Holmes, Solomond Nelson, Gene, Horace and Mary Wilson.

Sherry Layne Baker
WEST COLUMBIA — Funeral service for Sherry Layne Baker will be held 2 o’clock Friday, June 9, 2006, at Shives Funeral Home, Colonial Chapel. The family will receive friends from noon until 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Epworth Children’s Home, P.O. Box 50466, Columbia, SC 29250.

Mrs. Baker was born May 19, 1964. She was the daughter of the late Keith George and Helen C. Smith Hendrickson. She was a graduate of Irmo High School class of 1982. Mrs. Baker was formerly employed at the State Highway Dept., Galeana Chrysler and Bob Johnson’s Body Shop. She was a loving mother, wife, sister, and a wonderful friend to all who knew her.

Suvivors include her husband of the home, Tony Baker; daughters, Madison Snelgrove, Teia Layne Snelgrove, Amanda Baker and Ashlee Baker; son, Robert Baker; sister Cyndi Sternenberg and husband, Randy; brother, Jamie Tennant.

Sara M. Petty
WEST COLUMBIA — Sara Macy Petty died Monday, June 5, 2006, at Laurel Crest, where she had lived for 12 years.

Born November 10, 1912, to Charles and Ruth Petty in Randleman, North Carolina, she received her B.A. from Asbury College, Wilmore, Kentucky and completed her M.A. at Columbia Bible College (now Columbia International University), Columbia, South Carolina. Afterwards she was a schoolteacher in Trinity, North Carolina and Ware Shoals, South Carolina. In 1945 Dr. R.C. McQuilkin asked her to establish a Bible teaching department at Columbia Bible College. She became the Dean of Women in 1952 and served as “College Mom” for 21 years. She returned to teaching at CIU until her retirement in 1979. She then lived in California for several years teaching Adventures in the Bible classes, before returning home to Columbia where she helped to establish Marketplace Women-to-Women Bible Studies. In 1992 she was recognized as a Distinguished Alumna of CIU.

She is survived by two sisters-in-law, Virginia K. Petty and Katherine J. Petty; two cousins and 14 nieces and nephews.

Plans for a memorial service will be announced at a later date. Interment will be in the family plot in Springfield Meeting House Cemetery, High Point, N.C., this Saturday at 2 p.m. She will be at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. Memorials may be made to Columbia International University, P.O. Box 3122, Columbia, SC 29230.

Jackie Goodwin Wellons
CONWAY — Rachel Jacqueline “Jackie” Goodwin Wellons, age 77, wife of the late Dr. Robert M. Wellons, D.D.S of the Red Hill section of Horry County, died Tuesday, June 6, 2006, at her residence surrounded by her loving family following a courageous battle with cancer.

Mrs. Wellons was born in Lancaster, SC, a daughter of the late Curtis Ray Goodwin, Sr. and Nannie Ruth Atkins Goodwin. She was a graduate of the South Carolina Baptist Hospital in 1949. Mrs. Wellons was also predeceased by a brother, Curtis Ray Goodwin. She was a member of First Baptist Church where she was a Deacon and was a youth leader. She was also active in the Mission Ministry and was a Sunday School teacher.

Surviving are two sons, Eric Christian Wellons and his wife, “Mickey,” of Aynor and Patrick Joel Wellons and his wife, Sarah, of Savannah, Georgia; one daughter, Penny Wellons Cofer and her husband, James, of Columbia; six grandchildren, Michael Cofer of Columbia, Victoria Wellons, Allison Wellons and Madison Grace Wellons, all of Aynor, Benyamin Wellons and Hannah Wellons of Savannah, Georgia; and one brother, Paul Atkins Goodwin of Columbia, SC.

Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Friday from First Baptist Church of Conway with Rev. J. Anderson Bass officiating.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 until 9 p.m. Thursday.

Memorials may be sent to First Baptist Church, Missions Projects Fund, P.O. Box 419, Conway, SC 29528 or to Mercy Hospice of Horry County, P.O. Box 50640, Myrtle Beach, SC 29579.

Gail Aliene Coppel
WEST COLUMBIA — Gail Aliene Coppel, 56, passed away Tuesday, June 6, 2006.

Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Gail was the daughter of Charles Ellsworth Derr, Sr. and Muriel Aliene Gretsinger Derr. She was a member of The Harvest Church and the National Federation of the Blind of South Carolina. Gail was a loving mother and wife, and was a caring person who took pleasure in helping others.

Gail is survived by her husband, Frank Coppel of West Columbia; daughter, Laura Coppel of Lexington; son, Matthew Coppel of West Columbia; sister and brother-in-law, Laura and Randy Pettit of Apopka, FL; sister, Sherry Ross of Ocean City, MD; brother, Charles Derr, Jr. of Plano, TX; and father-in-law, Harold Coppel of West Columbia.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Saturday, June 10, 2006, at Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington. Services will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, June 11, 2006, in the Chapel of Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington, officiated by Pastor Ken Jumper. Inurnment will follow in Celestial Memorial Gardens.

Mark Pullen VanDeusen
CHAPIN — Mark Pullen VanDeusen, 50, formerly of Chandler, AZ, died Wednesday, May 31, 2006, due to complications of surgery and cancer. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 10, 2006, at Chapin Baptist Church with Rev. Dan Ratchford and Rev. Tim Hanley officiating. Mr. VanDeusen was born July 7, 1955, in Rochester, NY. He was a graduate of Williamson Central High School ’73, Williamson, NY, and the University of Rochester ’77, Rochester, NY. He was a loving husband and father and a faithful servant of his Lord, Jesus Christ.

He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Deobrah Burkeen VanDeusen; children, Kayce VanDeusen of Chandler, AZ, Kourtney VanDeusen of Chapin and Kyle VanDeusen of Chapin; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Peter (Denise) VanDeusen of Miami, FL, Jeffrey (Janice) VanDeusen of Williamson, NY; and one sister, Sarah VanDeusen of Marietta, GA. Memorial donations may be made to LifeChange, Inc., 12631 N. 36th St., Phoenix, AZ 85032 or the Salvation Army.

Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Chapin Chapel, is in charge.
