David Allen Swain
NEW ZION — David Allen Swain, 60, husband of Linda Evans Swain, died Monday, June 5, 2006, at his home in New Zion.

Born September 21, 1945, in Charleston, he was a son of the late Wordis C. Swain, Sr. and the late Sadie Tuten Swain. He graduated with a B.S. degree from the University of South Carolina, was a digital technician for Bell South and a member of Midway Presbyterian Church.

Surviving, besides his wife of New Zion, are two daughters, Celeste McElveen of Cades and Jennifer (Kirk) Smith of Charleston; two brothers, Cedron Swain of Charleston and Reggie Swain of Abbeville; two sisters, Glenda Howell and Sara Livingston of Charleston; four grandchildren, Edward McElveen, Emily McElveen, Kirkland Smith and Ashleigh Smith.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Thursday in Midway Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Rodney A. Foster officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday evening at Stephens Funeral Home in Manning and at other times at the residence, 13012 Black River Road, New Zion.

Memorials may be made to Midway Presbyterian Church, c/o Wendell Robinson, 2029 Greeleyville Hwy., Manning, SC 29102.

Stephens Funeral Home & Crematory of Manning is in charge of arrangements.

Carlos P. McCullough
COLUMBIA — Funeral service for Mr. Carlos P. McCullough of Columbia, S.C., will be held 1:00 p.m. Thursday, June 8, 2006, at Old Mount Zion A.M.E. Zion Church, Kingstree, S.C. Interment will follow in Singletary Cemetery. The family will receive friends 5:00-7:00 p.m. at McClary’s Funeral Home, 4116 North Main Street, Wednesday, June 7, 2006.

Mr. Carlos P. McCullough, the son of the late Mr. Thadius and Mrs. Louisa McCullough, died June 3, 2006. He continued his education at Clemson University and the Community College of Nevada. He was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. and was an active community volunteer.

Surviving are his four sisters, Mrs. Doris Harris, Mrs. Theadoshia Knox, Carolyn McCullough and Sharolyn McCulluogh; six brothers, Mr. Rodney McCullough, Mr. Lynneth McCullough, Mr. Connally McCullough, Mr. Sherman McCullough, Mr. Shaun McCullough and Mr. Thadius McCullough Jr.

McClary’s Funeral Home is in charge.

Melvin Graves Haimes
GEORGETOWN — Melvin Graves Haimes, 90, died Sunday, June 4, 2006, at his residence.

Mr. Haimes was born in Greenville, Miss., June 30, 1915, a son of the late Glemmie Morrison Haimes and Essye Graves Haimes. He grew up in Greenville and graduated from high school there. Mr. Haimes worked with the Works Project Administration for a time and later served in the Army Air Corps during WWII. He was employed by International Paper Co. in Georgetown before and after serving in the military. Mr. Haimes also worked at a paper mill in Savannah, Tenn., and Smurfit-Stone Paper Mill in Florence. After his retirement in 1977, he returned to Georgetown to live. He was an avid fisherman, hunter and outdoorsman. Mr. Haimes was a member of All Saints Church at Pawleys Island and the widower of Luba Lemish Haimes.

Surviving are a son, Glemmie Haimes of Lexington; a daughter, Stephanie Whipper of Opopka, Fla.; and a sister, Evelyn Hortlein of Gulf Shores, Ala.

Memorial services will be eleven o’clock Thursday morning, June 8, 2006, at Old All Saints Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Timothy D. Surratt.

The family suggests memorials to the Scholarship Fund of Water Environmental Association of S.C., 200-C Rich Lex Drive, Lexington, SC 29072.

The Georgetown Chapel of Mayer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Kimberly Kaye Henderson
SWANSEA — Kimberly Kaye Henderson, 30, of Swansea, died Monday, June 5, 2006.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, June 9, 2006, at Swansea First Baptist Church with Rev. Terry Wilder officiating. Burial will be in Southland Memorial Gardens in West Columbia. The casket will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Pallbearers will be Joey Boyer, Neville Henderson, Gary Hobbs, Brian Corbett, Scott Gaines, Jimmy Jeffers and Eldridge Henderson.

Miss Henderson was born in Columbia, a daughter of Neville Pat Henderson and Jackie Champion Henderson. She attended Swansea First Baptist Church. She was a graduate of Swansea High School. She was a 2006 Gold Medalist in cheerleading in the Special Olympics. Kim was very outgoing and loving. She never met a stranger.

Survivors include her father of Swansea; her mother of Swansea; three sisters, Terri Stone of Williston, Jennifer Evans and her husband, Brian, of Lexington, and Maddie Henderson of Swansea; two brothers, Wayne Henderson of Gilbert, and Brandon Henderson of Swansea; paternal grandmother, Belle Henderson of Blythewood; three nephews, Chris Henderson, Cody Henderson and Quaid Stone; a niece, Mariah Stone; and a number of aunts and uncles. The family would like to extend a special thanks to Shannon and Rachel for being her Best Buddies, and to Janet Inabinet for being a special friend.

The family will receive friends from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday at Culler-McAlhany Funeral Home in North and other times at 201 Toole Smith Road, Swansea.

Rufus Ferguson
FAIRFAX — Services with burial for Rufus Eugene Ferguson, 77, 1 p.m. Thursday at Nazarene Missionary Baptist Church, viewing: noon-8 p.m. today (wake services from 6-8 p.m.) at M.F. Riley’s Funeral Home. Born in Allendale Co. to Ephraim and Annie Busby Ferguson, he died June 1, 2006. Surviving: daughters, Patricia Highsmith, Joyce Manuel; 4 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; siblings, Annie Brunson, Ephraim Ferguson.

James E. Graham
WHITMIRE — Graveside service for James E. Graham, 87, widower of Azalee Mull Graham, 2 p.m. Thursday in Union Memorial Gardens, with visitation 12:30-1:30 p.m. prior to service at S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home, Union. Born in Pomaria to Ernest and Eunice Ringer Graham, he died June 6, 2006. Surviving: siblings, Jessie Kitchens, Dorothy Tesieniar, Essie Richardson, Rebecca Parton, Bobby Graham.

Marjorie E. Clay
COLUMBIA — Marjorie E. Clay, 81, died June 6, 2006. She was born December 15, 1924, in Columbia, SC. She was the daughter of the late Ernest James and Henrietta Plumer Clay. She received her nursing degree from Bellevue School of Nursing, New York University. She worked as a registered nurse, retiring as office manager for Columbia Neurological Associates.

Surviving are nephew, Christopher W. Clay and wife, Kaye, of Columbia; niece Kathryn C. Case and husband, Jack, of Mary Esther, Florida; great and great-great-nephews and nieces. She was predeceased by brother, E. James Clay, Jr. and nephew, J. Michael Clay.

Ms. Clay donated her body for research to the USC School of Medicine. A memorial service will be held June 8 at 11:00 a.m. at St Andrews Lutheran Church with visitation following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the USC School of Medicine or to the St Andrews Lutheran Church Organ Fund.

Anita Brooks
GREENWOOD — Anita Brown Brooks, 83, of 526 Grace Street, Greenwood, SC, wife of Carroll H. Brooks died Monday, June 5, 2006, in Self Regional Hospital.

Born in Brooklyn, NY, March 12, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Palmer H. and Katherine Glissman Brown. Mrs. Brooks was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection and St. Ann’s Guild.

She was preceded in death by her brother, James A. Brown and her grandson, Sean Biggart.

Mrs. Brooks is survived by her beloved husband of the home after 61 years of marriage; a son, Barry D. Brooks and wife, Joy, of Emporia, Kansas; a daughter, Karen Biggart Whitfield of Columbia, SC; four grandchildren, Bryan Biggart of Columbia, SC, Cherie (Andres) Acevedo, Megan (Andrew) Flack and George (Jessie) Brooks, all of Kansas; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Dorothy Moore of Liberty, Missouri; and the entire Brooks family of Greenwood, SC.

Services will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday at the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection, with the Reverend Peter Hawes officiating. A private family burial will be held following the service.

Pallbearers will be Gerald Brooks, Mims Mobley III, John Newlon, Michael Whitfield, Steve Fisher and Charles Long.

The family will receive at Harley Funeral Home & Crematory Wednesday from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m.

The family has requested that flowers be omitted and memorials be made to the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection, PO Box 3283, Greenwood, SC 29648 or to a charity of one’s choice.

Harley Funeral Home & Crematory is in charge of arrangements.

Molly Doyle Cantelmo
WHITE ROCK — Funeral Services for Mrs. Molly Doyle Cantelmo, 88, of White Rock, will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, June 8, 2006, in the chapel of Greenlawn Funeral Home with Chaplain Gary Lyerly officiating. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening, May 7, 2006, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home and prior to the service Thursday beginning at 11:00 a.m. Condolences may be sent to www.mem.com.

Molly Doyle Cantelmo, born April 27, 1918, in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, passed away June 5, 2006, in the Lowman Home in White Rock, South Carolina.

Molly graduated from Perth Amboy High School in 1926 and attended Newark Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. It was there that she met her future husband, Albert Carl Cantelmo, whose mother was a patient in the hospital.

Molly and Albert married July 1, 1939, and were married for 55 years. Albert passed away in November 1995. They lived in New Jersey and relocated to South Carolina in 1956 when Albert was transferred to Hampton, SC, with Westinghouse Corporation. They moved to Columbia in 1962.

Molly pleased her family and friends with her wonderful cooking and won many awards with her delicious dessert recipes. Many of her wonderful recipes are featured in local cookbooks.

Molly is survived by four children: Albert Cantelmo (Thelma) of Florence, SC, and Myrtle Beach, SC, Caryl C. Polk (Gerald, deceased) of Hampton, SC, Nancy C. Hendley (Steve) of Simpsonville, SC; and Gary (Dawn) Cantelmo of Kennesaw, GA. There are eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Margaret and Edwina Doyle of Piscataway, NJ. She was predeceased by a brother, William Doyle of Long Island, NY.

Alice JoAnn Beavers
WEST COLUMBIA — Funeral service for Alice JoAnn Beavers, 63, will be held 5 p.m. Thursday, June 8, 2006, at Grace Chapel, officiated by Reverend Steve Fowler. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. this Wednesday evening at Thompson Funeral Home of West Columbia.

Mrs. Beavers, widow of Grady Beavers, died Monday, June 5, 2006. Born in Columbia, SC, she was a daughter of the late Henry W. Areheart, Sr. and Alice Mozelle Spinks Areheart. She was a member of Grace Chapel.

Surviving are her children; Debbie, Alice, Marie, Billy, Ernie, Chuck and Michael Bolen and Robert Strickland; brothers, Gerald Areheart and Henry W. “Billy” Areheart, Jr.; 20 grandchildren and an aunt, Iris Gunter.

Mary Ann Pratt
COLUMBIA — A graveside service for Mary Ann Bowers Pratt, 94, widow of Robert Otis Pratt, will be held 10:30 o’clock Friday, June 9, 2006, in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The Reverends Mary Green Kearse and Greg Dowey will officiate. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 o’clock Thursday evening at Shives Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Shandon United Methodist Church, 3407 Devine St., Columbia, SC 29205 or the American Diabetes Assoc., 2711 Middleburg Drive, Ste. 205, Columbia, SC 29204.

Mrs. Pratt died Monday, June 5, 2006. She was born in Columbia, a daughter of the late William Robert and Corrie Strange Bowers. Mrs. Pratt retired from the University of South Carolina and was a lifetime member of Shandon United Methodist Church and a member of the Wesley Fellowship Sunday School Class.

Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Doug and Sharon Pratt of Columbia and Robert and Liz Pratt of Florence and one grandson, Marcus A. Pratt of Florence.

Ethell Mason Graham
SALUDA — Services for Ethell Mason Graham, 67, will be 4 p.m. Thursday at Penn Creek Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery. Butler and Sons Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Saluda County to Susie Mason, she died June 4, 2006. Surviving are children, Charlie Jr., Richard, Curtis, Kentrall, Albert, Sallie Jean Graham, Barbara Smith; siblings, James Mason, Sarah Etheredge; 15 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren.

Betty Forrest Drafts
JOHNSTON — A memorial service for Mrs. Betty Forrest Drafts, age 70, will be held Thursday, June 8, 2006, at 3 p.m. at Johnston First Baptist Church. The family will receive friends in the church sanctuary at 2 p.m. until the hour of the service. Memorials may be made to Aiken SPCA, 401 Wire Road, Aiken, SC 29801.

Mrs. Drafts, a native of Johnston and widow of Donald M. Drafts, died Monday, June 5, 2006. She was daughter of the late Charlie M. Sr. and Permelia Hudgens Forrest. Mrs. Drafts was a homemaker who over the years nurtured and found homes for untold numbers of stray animals. Mrs. Drafts was a member of Johnston Baptist Church and the Gleaners Sunday School Class.

Survivors include two daughters, Sandra J. Pressley (Sam), and Susan J. Forrest, both of Columbia; a brother, Charlie M. Forrest, Jr. of Anderson; and her beloved pets, Sassy, Anna and Winnie Poo.

John Peter “Pete” Schumpert Sr.
PROSPERITY — John Peter “Pete” Schumpert, Sr., age 86, of 1650 Blacksgate East, died Monday, June 5th in Providence Hospital in Columbia, SC.

He was born in Saluda County and was a son of the late George and Louise Yarborough Schumpert.

Mr. Schumpert had retired from Greenwood Mills Blalock Plant in Joanna and was a member of Hickory Grove Christian Advent Church and later attended First Baptist Church of Joanna. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved to hunt and fish.

He is survived by his wife, Naomi Bledsoe Schumpert of the home; one son, John Pete Schumpert, Jr. and wife, Becky, of Prosperity; three daughters, Carolyn Lindler of Whitmire, Louise Dillard and husband, Bobby, of Whitmire, Judy Ann Moore of Simpsonville; three brothers, William Schumpert and Curtis Schumpert, both of Saluda, Milton Schumpert of Columbia; one sister, Mary Ella Senterfit of Batesburg; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, June 7th at 3:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Joanna. The family will receive friends at Gray Funeral Home in Clinton Tuesday 7:00 - 9:00 pm.
