Helen Miller Leaman Petit
GREENWOOD — Helen Miller Leaman Petit, 78, resident of 104 Highland Drive, wife of Dr. Edward L. Petit, died June 4, 2006, in Self Regional Medical Center after an extended illness.

Born in Greenwood County, she was a daughter of the late Samuel Madden and Helen Griffin Leaman of Cross Hill. She was educated in the public schools in Cross Hill and Clinton and earned a bachelor’s degree in history and education from Winthrop College. She taught elementary school in North Carolina and later was an office manager for her husband’s dental practice in Greenwood.

Mrs. Petit is survived by her husband of the home, and daughters, Karen Petit of Columbia and Kathy Petit of Greenwood; a sister, Josephine Leaman DeBruhl of Lexington; a brother, Samuel M. Leaman Jr. of Greenwood; granddaughters, Leaman Mosby of Myrtle Beach and Caroline Mosby of Greenwood; and the family’s devoted dog, Hoover.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 7, 2006, from the Blyth Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Archie Moore of Greenwood Presbyterian Church officiating.

Burial will be in Liberty Springs Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Cross Hill where members of the Leaman family have worshiped for more than 200 years.

The family is at the home in Idlewood and will receive friends at the funeral home from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Greenwood Presbyterian Church, 1414 Calhoun Road, Greenwood, SC 29649 or to Hospice Care of the Piedmont, 408 West Alexander Avenue, Greenwood, SC 29646.

Robert “Bob” McCauley
DARLINGTON — James Robert “Bob” McCauley, age 92, died Sunday, June 4, 2006, in a local nursing home. A graveside service will be held in Grove Hill Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 7, officiated by Rev. Mickey Bell and directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mr. McCauley was born in Alexandria, VA, son of the late George and Mary Hughes McCauley. He was formerly employed by the Railway Mail Service, an agency of the U.S. Postal Service, for a period of over 35 years, and after retiring in 1970, served 14 years part-time with the Darlington County Library. He was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, Florence Chapter #960.

Mr. McCauley was a longtime member of Darlington Presbyterian Church until becoming a member of Trinity United Methodist Church where he served as a choir member.

Surviving are a daughter, June (James) Ross of Georgetown, two granddaughters, Catherine Stewart of Washington , DC, and Louise Rudisill Furr of Charleston; and a great-grandson, Logan Abel Murray.

Mr. McCauley was preceded in death by his first wife, Louise Spann McCauley and his second wife, Ethel S. Allen McCauley.

Memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Vera Law
FLORENCE — Vera Morgan Law, age 91, wife of the late Charlton E. Law, Jr., died Monday, June 5, 2006, in the Presbyterian Home of South Carolina. A memorial service will be held in the Chapel of the Presbyterian Home in Florence Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. The family will receive friends in the parlor of the Presbyterian Home following the service.

Born in Harnett County, NC, she was a daughter of the late James M. Morgan and Flonnie Gardner Morgan. She was an active Sunday school teacher at Dillon Presbyterian Church for more than 20 years. She was also heavily involved in the Saint Eugene Community Hospital Auxiliary, the Dillon County Cancer Society, the Historical Society, the American Legion Auxiliary and the Dillon Garden Club.

Surviving are two sons and a daughter-in-law, Charlton E. Law, III, and Linda of Columbia, and John A. Law of Darlington; two granddaughters, Margaret L. Weaver and Sarah L. Williams, husbands, Troy and Trevor; and great-grandchildren, Lydia Gardner Weaver, Margaret Ella Weaver, Simmons Madison Weaver, Graham Edward Williams and Jane Lynn Williams.

Memorials may be made to the Presbyterian Home of S.C., or Darlington Presbyterian Church.

John Thomas Hurst
CHESTERFIELD — John Thomas “Jeep” Hurst died Sunday, June 4, 2006, at his home in Chesterfield, SC. He was born to Roy L. and Madge G. Hurst, March 22, 1936. He graduated from Chesterfield High School and attended Wofford College.

In 1955 “Jeep” joined his father in business at the Western Auto in Chesterfield, and in 1971, he became sole owner and operated the business until his retirement in 1999. During his years as a merchant, he was active in the Western Auto Dealers Association. As a member of the Dealers Council, he represented all Western Auto Dealers in the Southeast.

“Jeep” was a leader in his community, and, over the years, he served in many civic groups and organizations. In addition to being one of the first members of the Chesterfield Jaycees, he was later a charter member of the Greater Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce and served a tenure as its president. He served on the Chesterfield “Great Town” Commission and was also a member of the local Carolina Bank Advisory Board, serving a term as its chairman. “Jeep” served in the S.C. National Guard for a number of years, and he was also a Boy Scouts of America Merit Badge Counselor. He was a trustee of the Chesterfield District Board of Education and was chairman of the first Chesterfield Area Advisory Council.

As a lifelong member of St Paul United Methodist Church, he served his church in many capacities over the years. At the time of his illness, he was serving as church treasurer and was a member of the Administrative Council and the Chancel Choir. He had previously served as chairman of the Official Board, chairman of the Board of Trustees, chairman of the Finance Committee and president of the United Methodist Men.

“Jeep” is survived by his wife of 48 years, Donna Davis Hurst; his daughter, Connie Hurst Jeffcoat and her husband, Alan, of Mt. Pleasant, SC; his grandson, Hurst Alan Jeffcoat of Mt. Pleasant, SC; his granddaughter, Caroline Faith Jeffcoat of Mt. Pleasant, SC; and his two sisters, Mary Faith Hurst Watson and her husband, Sam, of Edgefield, SC, and Linda Sue Hurst Williams and her husband, Butch, of Columbia, SC.

A funeral service will be held 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 6, 2006, at St. Paul United Methodist Church with the burial to follow the service in Chesterfield Cemetery.

The family has requested that memorial gifts be designated for the Sanctuary Fund at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 305 West Main Street, Chesterfield, SC 29709 or to a charity of one’s choice.

Armante Devon Humphery
COLUMBIA — Services for Baby Armante Devon Humphery, of 134 Saddlefield Road, will be held Wednesday, June 7, 2006, at 2:00 p.m. at A.A. Dicks Funeral Home-Sullivan Chapel, Columbia. A.A. Dicks Funeral Home-Sullivan Chapel is in charge of these arrangements.

Baby Humphery died Wednesday, May 31, 2006.

He was the son of Josalyn Wilson and Jack Humphery, both of Columbia, SC.

He is survived by his parents; his maternal grandparents, Dea. Steve and Rose Wilson, Sr. of Columbia; his brothers and sisters, Willie Jack Humphery, III, Nadia Aiyanna Humphery, Ashli Mocola-Faye Humphery, Josheria Deanna Wilson, Asante Breanna Wilson, Princess Sa-ria Humphery, Prince Rueben Humphery, Nicholas Ashley and Jafaye Alize Humphery, all of Columbia, SC; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Jack Reaves Hatch
COLUMBIA — Graveside services for Jack Reaves Hatch will be held 4:00 p.m. Wednesday in Riverside Cemetery, directed by Cooper Funeral Home. Visitation will be held following the service.

Mr. Hatch, 84, formerly of Dillon, died Monday, June 5, 2006, in National Health Care in Columbia.

Born in Dillon County, February 4, 1922, he was the son of the late Clyde Gray Hatch and Lula Reaves Hatch. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and was a recipient of the Purple Heart. He had retired from the Dillon County Clerk of Courts Office and was the former Dillon County Auditor.

Survivors include his sister, Lura H. (Carl) Hinnant of Columbia; niece, Lucy Hinnant (Danny) Way of Columbia; nephews, Clyde Gray Hinnant of Columbia, Carl “Randy” (Clara) Hinnant, III of West Columbia, and Ronald Hinnant of Norway, SC; great niece, Amanda Ethridge of Columbia.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Palmetto Chapter, P.O. Box 7044, Columbia, SC 29202-7044, or to the charity of one’s choice.

Hazel Lee Fallaw Glenn
GASTON — Services for Hazel Lee Fallaw Glenn, 84, of Gaston, SC, will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 7, 2006, at Shiloh United Methodist Church, officiated by Rev. Michael L. Smith. Burial will follow in Glenn-Senn Cemetery, Glenn Road, Gaston. Pallbearers will be Milton Glenn, Ashley Glenn, Al Arnette, Mark Geddings, Michael Glenn and Joe Perniciaro. Honorary pallbearers will be Kendt Shull, Kirk Morrow, Jerry Fallaw, Austin Perniciaro, Ronnie Fallaw, Davie Fallaw and Rick Green. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington. Memorials may be made to Shiloh United Methodist Church, 547 Gardner’s Terrace Road, West Columbia, SC 29170.

Mrs. Glenn, widow of Howard Larkin “Peck” Glenn, died Sunday, June 4, 2006. Born in Gaston, SC, she was the daughter of the late Ethel Lawson Fallaw and David Henry Fallaw. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Mrs. Glenn was a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church. She held several church offices at Harmony Baptist Church and was a former Sunday School teacher at Harmony Baptist and Shiloh UMC. Additionally, she worked in the family grocery store and retired from K-Mart.

Surviving are her son, Thomas H. “Tommy” Glenn and wife, Sara D. Glenn, of Gaston; daughter, Linda Glenn Harrison and husband, Jerry Philip Harrison, of Chapin; grandchildren, Tomian G. Geddings and husband, Mark A. Geddings, Philip H. Harrison and wife, Tammy Bickley Harrison, Loretta Glenn Arnette, Stephen Glenn Harrison and wife, Melissa Watts Harrison, Vicki Harrison-Rowe (deceased), Dr. Jennifer Glenn Morrow and husband, Dr. Tommy Kirk Morrow; great-grandchildren, Albert “Al” Glenn Arnette, Caroline Elizabeth Arnette, Spencer Justice Harrison, Chynna Victoria Rowe, Ciara Lee Rowe, Mark Allen Geddings, Jr., Logan Augustus Harrison and Meredith Claire Geddings; sisters, Melba Glenn Jeffcoat and Faye Fallaw Rivers. Mrs. Glenn was preceded in death by sisters, Welbern Fallaw and Geneive Fallaw and brothers, David Howard Fallaw and Billy Byron Fallaw.

Mary P. Swinford Graben
HOPKINS — Funeral services for Mrs. Mary P. Swinford Graben, 82, of Hopkins, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 7, 2006, in the chapel of Greenlawn Funeral Home with Dr. William Johnston and Dr. Harry Phillips officiating. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening, June 6, 2006, at the funeral home from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Condolences may be sent to www.mem.com. Mrs. Graben passed away Sunday, June 4, 2006. Born July 3, 1923, in Lauderdale County, Alabama, she was a daughter of the late Benjamin F. Swinford and Mary Baugh Swinford. Mrs. Graben was a homemaker. She was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church, active in the services, Voices of Experience and the Stephen Ministries in the outreach to help others.

Surviving are her husband of 66 years, Jimmie C. Graben; three daughters, M. Elaine Benson, Judy A. Smith and Susan P. Anderson; eight grandchildren, James B. Benson, John R. Benson, Joseph P. Benson, Jeffrey M. Benson, Gena M. Smith, Jessie L. Smith, Jimmie J. Anderson and Pamela H. Anderson; and one great-grandchild, Serenity L. Anderson.

Edith H. Canfield
COLUMBIA — Funeral Services for Mrs. Edith Hildegarde Canfield, 82, of Columbia, will be held at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 7, 2006, in the chapel of Greenlawn Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Serenity Gardens. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening, May 6, 2006, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Mrs. Canfield passed away Sunday, June 4, 2006. Born May 31, 1924, in Silesia, Prussia, she was the daughter of the late Paul Hermann and Ida Pauline Pichel. Mrs. Canfield retired from Palmetto Health Baptist after 20 years of dedicated service in nursing and was of the Lutheran faith. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend to everyone and will be deeply missed.

Surviving are two daughters, Barbara Canfield Harrell and Eva Kay Canfield, both of Columbia; one son, Eugene “Gene” H. Canfield and his fiancee’, Sharlene Lovett, both of Columbia; one sister, Erna Pichel of Germany; four grandchildren, Jennifer Lynne Tokarev and her husband, Vlad, Robert “Bobby” Michael Canfield and his wife, Lynn, Christopher Joseph Harrell and Caroline Elizabeth Harrell; two great-grandchildren, Cassidy Marie Canfield and Katherine Lynne Tokarev; and her cat, Bonnie.

Mrs. Canfield was predeceased by her husband, Eugene Victor Canfield and two brothers, Helmut Pichel and Heinz Pichel.

Elizabeth K. Cook
LATTA — Mrs. Elizabeth Knight Cook, 86, wife of the late Jesse B. Cook, died Saturday, June 3, 2006, in Sunny Acres Nursing Home. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, June 6, 2006, at Kannaday’s Funeral Home of Latta. Funeral services will be Wednesday, June 7, 2006, at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home, with burial at 4:00 p.m. in Bull Swamp Baptist Church Cemetery in North, SC, directed by Kannaday’s Funeral Home.

Mrs. Cook was born June 22, 1919, in Woodford, SC, a daughter of the late Sam and Ruth Anna Hooker Knight. Her birth mother died when Mrs. Cook was an infant, and her foster mother, Lizzie Knight, reared her. Mrs. Cook was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church in North, SC, and moved to Latta in 1984 and attended Latta Baptist Church and was a member of the Harriett Dew Sunday school class. She had retired as a nursing assistant from Methodist Home in Orangeburg, SC.

Surviving Mrs. Cook are daughters, Carolyn (Raymond) Kannaday of Latta, SC, and Sandra (John) Stafford of Denmark, SC; grandchildren, Kim (Colleen) Kannaday of Frankfort, IL, Michelle (Tony) Kinsey of Bamberg, SC, Mitch Jones of Jacksonville, FL; great-grandchildren, Roman D. Kannaday and Tanner Elizabeth Kannaday of Frankfort, IL, Josh Kinsey and Ashley Kinsey of Bamberg, SC; and sisters, Beatrice Driggers of North, SC, and Margaret Phillips of Orangeburg, SC.

Helen Still Black
BARNWELL — Mrs. Helen Still Black, 84, widow of Harold B. Black, died Sunday, June 4, 2006, in Barnwell Co. Hospital.

Mrs. Black was born in Barnwell County, August 10, 1921. She was the daughter of the late Leroy C. and Ethel Mae Still. She was a member of Reedy Branch Baptist Church and was a former associate teacher at Barnwell High School.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Reedy Branch Baptist Church with the Rev. Harry Warren officiating. Burial will follow in Barnwell County Memory Gardens of Reynolds Road. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday evening at Mole Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Carolina Children’s Home, 3201 Stenholm Road, Columbia, SC 29204.

Survivors include two sons, Phil H. Black (Martha) of Lexington, SC, Roy A. Black (Ana) of Aiken, SC; one daughter, Beth B. McDonald (Buddy) of Barnwell, SC; four sisters, Willie Dell S. Keele and Barbara S. Fakoury of Barnwell, SC, LaTrell S. Toole of New Ellenton, SC, Myrtis S. Jones of Augusta, GA; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Mary Lillian Livingston
NORTH — Mary Lillian Livingston, 78, of North, died Saturday, June 3, 2006.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, June 6, 2006, at Limestone United Methodist Church with Rev. R.T. Bowling officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Rusty Jeffcoat, James Garrick, Ron Tyler, Kevin Fields, Roger Amaker, and Herk Fields. Honorary pallbearers will be the staff of Orangeburg Nursing Home and members of the Garden City Antique Car Club.

Mrs. Livingston was born in Orangeburg County, a daughter of the late Tom and Vivian Stroman Livingston. She was a member of Limestone United Methodist Church. She was married to the late Archie Livingston. She and her husband were members of the Palmetto Model A Club and the Garden City Antique Car Club. She was known as “Granny” by many. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt. She was always smiling and willing to help others.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law: Sherrie and Lewis Culler, of Leesville; a grandson, Michael Travis Jeffcoat, of North; a great-granddaughter, Natalie Marie Jeffcoat; a brother and sister-in-law: C.J. and Annette Inabinet, of Orangeburg; a sister-in-law: Mary Livingston Cook; a special friend, Elma Griffis; a number of nieces and nephews; and her extended family at Orangeburg Nursing Home.

The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Monday at Culler-McAlhany Funeral Home and other times at the home, 2289 AZ Road, North.
