Dorothy Frances Stephens
COLUMBIA — Miss Stephens, 94, of Columbia, SC, formerly of Charlotte, NC, passed away Saturday, June 3, 2006, after a brief illness. She was born August 1, 1911, in Charlotte, NC, and was a lifetime resident. She had recently moved to Columbia, SC, to be near her sister. Miss Stephens was the eldest child of the late Frank Dwight Stephens, Sr. and Mary Clifton Hunter Stephens of Charlotte, NC.

Miss Stephens graduated from Davenport College in Lenoir, NC, with a degree in Piano Performance. She pursued further studies in Organ at Queens College in Charlotte, NC. She was unable to complete her studies due to a serious back injury received when she was thrown from her horse.

Miss Stephens later worked in the office of Charlotte Pipe and Foundry Company, working with her father, until 1962 when her mother died. Shortly thereafter, she retired so that she could spend more time with her father and care for him. They traveled extensively to Europe, Hawaii, and the Caribbean. They often visited their cousin in Kingston, Jamaica while in the Caribbean Islands.

After her father’s death, Miss Stephens continued to live in their home on Sherwood Avenue. She was an active member of Myers Park Baptist Church until her later years. Affectionately known to her family as “Big Dorothy”, she was closely involved with her nieces and nephews and their families as often hosted them in her home.

Miss Stephens was preceded in death by her brothers, Robert C. Stephens and his wife, Onita, Blake Hunter Stephens and his wife, Elizabeth, and F. Dwight Stephens, Jr. She is survived by her sister, Mary S. Rogers of Columbia, SC, and sister-in-law, Clara M. Stephens of Charlotte, NC; nephews, Dwight Stephens, III of Raleigh, NC, Neil Stephens of Fletcher, NC, Blake Stephens and his wife, Linda, of Clover, SC, Bob Stephens and his wife, Claire, of Charlotte, NC, Paul Rogers and his wife Mary, of Columbia, SC, Jeff Rogers and his wife, Kelly, of Columbia, SC, Carl Rogers and his wife, Trisha, of Orange Park, FL, David Rogers and wife, Lynn, of Atlanta, GA; nieces, Nancy Stephens and her husband, Jim Hall, of Almond, NC, Janet Stephens and her husband, Mark Kurdys, of Asheville, NC, Connie Stephens McManus and her husband, Rick, of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, Betty Stephens McIntyre and her husband, Hampton, of Columbus, GA, and Dorothy Rogers Baehr and her husband, Don, of Lakeland, FL. She is also survived by many great and great-great nephews and nieces, all of whom she loved and enjoyed.

Miss Stephens will lie in state on Tuesday, June 6, 2006, from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. at Harry and Bryant Company, 500 Providence Road, Charlotte, NC. A graveside service will be conducted at 12 p.m. in Evergreen Cemetery, 4426 Central Avenue, Charlotte, NC, officiated by her nephew, Paul Rogers, and assisted by her nephews, Carl, David and Jeff Rogers. Special music will be provided by family members.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Palmetto Health Hospice, 1400 Pickens Street, Columbia, SC 29201.

Donna Kay Springs
SUMTER — Ms. Donna Kay Springs, 45, died Friday, June 2, 2006, in Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter after an illness.

Ms. Springs was born in Florence County, a daughter of Alton Legrand Springs and Willie Jean Poole Springs. She was a very devoted Christian and gifted singer. Ms. Springs never met a stranger and was loved by many.

Survivors include her two aunts, Shirley Springs Feagin of Charleston, S.C., Ruby Springs Nichols of Sumter, S.C.; one uncle, Hoyt L. Springs of Lake City, S.C.; many cousins, including Joan Hanna of St. Hellans Island, S.C.; and a special friend and neighbor, Frank Castine of Sumter, S.C.

Funeral service was at 4:00 p.m. Sunday, June 4, 2006, at Brockington Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Bethesda United Methodist Church Cemetery in Cades, S.C.

The family had visitation from 3:00 - 4:00 p.m. Sunday, June 4, 2006, at Brockington Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Association.

Brockington Funeral Home, Lake City, is in charge.

Rebecca Witherspoon
SUMTER — Services for Rebecca “Bertha” Witherspoon, 92, widow of William Witherspoon Sr., 2 p.m. Tuesday at Salem Missionary Baptist Church. Burial: Haynesworth Cemetery, Job’s Mortuary in charge. Born in Lone Star to Willie and Gussie Hattie Houck Holiday, she died June 1, 2006. Survivors: children, Jesse, Henry, Willie Mae, Rebecca Witherspoon, Gussie Charles, Roberta Cooper; more.

Henrietta Taylor Thomas
COLUMBIA — Services for Mrs. Henrietta Taylor Thomas will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday (viewing at 1 p.m.) at the Bethlehem Baptist Church (College Place) with burial in Crescent Hill Memorial Gardens. Wake services will begin at 6 p.m. this evening at Leevy’s Funeral Home, Taylor Street Chapel. Surviving are her mother, Henrietta Taylor; three sisters, Wilhelmeina B. (Alphonso) Adams, Josephine Taylor and Roberta (Harold) Reese; one brother, Willis A. Taylor.

Frances DeShield Hopkins Ridgell
BATESBURG-LEESVILLE — Services for Frances DeShield Hopkins Ridgell will be conducted at First Baptist Church of Batesburg at 3 p.m. Wednesday, June 7, 2006, with Rev. Philip McNeal officiating. Burial will follow in the Batesburg Cemetery. Visitation will be at Barr-Price Funeral Home, Historic B-L Chapel, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 6, 2006.

Mrs. Ridgell was the wife of the late Edgar C. Ridgell, Pharmacist and co-owner of the Ridgell Drug Company in Batesburg and a long time member of the First Baptist Church of Batesburg, where she served in many capacities.

She was born in Florence, South Carolina, and was the daughter of the late Franklin Vincent and Kene Lucille Wilkins Hopkins. She was predeceased by her sister, Eleanor Hopkins Humphrey. Mrs. Ridgell graduated from Furman University with a Bachelor’s and a Master’s Degree and had completed most of her studies for a PhD in Library Science. She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International for Key Women Educators. An avid historian, she was a charter member of the Granby Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution in Lexington, South Carolina, where she served two years as Regent. Mrs. Ridgell was also a member of the South Carolina Colonial Dames and the Clan MacDougal Society. She was an excellent teacher of South Carolina History and retired as a long time director of the Batesburg-Leesville High School library. She was also an original member of the Lexington County Circulating Library where one of her many contributions was to drive the “Book Mobile.”

Surviving family members are Edgar Clement “Tad” Ridgell, Jr. (Priscilla) of West Columbia, Eleanor DeShield Ridgell Tomlinson (Rick) of Florence, Robert Hopkins “Hop” Ridgell (Bridget) of Lexington; grandchildren, U.C. “Chet” Tomlinson III, Frances Dare Ridgell Claire, Kene Tomlinson Holloman, Daniel Christal Ridgell; two great-grandchildren, Tallon and Tanner Holloman.

Active pallbearers will be Haskell Brown, Tom Camp, Charles Kirkland, Brock Nicholson, Dr. Tom Pritchard, Bob Speaks, Terry Taylor and Dr. James D. Whitehead.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Generations of Batesburg, Oaklcaf Village of Lexington, and Lexington Extended Care for their care and comfort in her final time, and would also like to thank Carolyn and William Carson and all of her many other friends for their long time love and friendship.

Memorials may be made to the DAR Granby Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Lexington, South Carolina, or the First Baptist Church of Batesburg, building fund.

Kimora Sanae Isaac
COLUMBIA — Services for Kimora Sanae Isaac, infant daughter of Rodney Isaac and Kim L. Branch, will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Serenity Memorial Gardens. Bostick-Tompkins Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Columbia, she died June 1, 2006. Surviving are her parents; siblings, Rodney, Daetron, Sequavius and Destiny; grandparents, Bertha Isaac, Ada “Penny” Taylor and Ronnie Branch Sr.

Andrew “Granddad” Macon
COLUMBIA — Services for Andrew “Granddad” Macon are 3 p.m. Tuesday at Greater St. Luke Baptist Church with burial in Serenity Memorial Gardens. Visitation is 7-8 tonight at Bostick-Tompkins F.H. Born in Mississippi to Frank and Molly H. Macon, he died May 30, 2006. Survivors: wife, Eva Macon; children, Larry, Jerry, Minnie, Mervin, Paul, Denise, Gertrude, Beverly; two sisters.

Charles W. Compton
LUGOFF — Services for Charles “Charlie” W. Compton, 65, will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Woodridge Funeral Home. A retiree from Structioneers, he died June 3, 2006. Surviving are his loving wife, Linda; daughters, Jeri, Tami, Angela and Denise; sons, Keni and Robi; brother, Tom; 19 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

Ruth Brunson Conoly
BELVEDERE — Services for Ruth Brunson Conoly, 43, are 11 a.m. Wednesday at River of Life Church with cremation following the service. Shellhouse F.H., Aiken, is in charge. Born in Dayton, Ohio, to Joyce Brunson Harbeson and David Brunson Sr., she died June 2, 2006. Surviving are her mother; husband, Frank Conoly; children, Ashley Cohen, Matthew Brunson; brothers, David Jr. and George Brunson Sr.

Roger Lee Brock Jr.
CHERAW — Services for Roger Lee Brock Jr., 36, will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Calvary Baptist Church. Visitation is 6-8 tonight at Kiser Funeral Home. Born in Chesterfield County to Roger Sr. and Joanne Clark Brock, he died June 3, 2006. Mr. Brock was a math educator and taught at Anson Co. Early College. Surviving are his parents; brother, Chris Brock; nephews, Chris, Cole Brock; grandfather, William Garris.

Giuseppe Maoli
COLUMBIA — Funeral Mass of Giuseppe Maoli, 83, will be celebrated Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. john Neumann Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 100 Polo Road, Columbia, S.C. 29223. Visitation will be Monday 6-8 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral home, Devine Street Chapel.

Mr. Maoli died Saturday, June 3, 2006. Born in Cittaducale, Italy, he was the son of the late Ferdinando and Anita Bonafaccia Maoli. A WW II veteran of the Italian Army, he received a PhD in Agricultural Science and retired as a professor from State University La Sapienza in Rome. He was a Knight of Malta and a Knight of the Pontificial Order of Gregorii Magnii PP.

Surviving are his wife, Vittoria Sabatini Maoli; children, Eligio Maoli and his wife, Paola, of Columbia, Anna Alessandrini and her husband, Walter, of Columbia, Rossella Del Favero and her husband, Filippo, of Milan, Italy and Alessandra Pio di Savoia and her husband, Alberto, of Mountain View, Calif.; eleven grandchildren; and sisters, Maria Pappalardo and Sister Luigina Maoli, both of Italy.

Lucy S. Sims
CLINTON — Services for Lucy S. Sims, 76, of 107 Moon Lane, will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Little River Zion Baptist Church, Kinards. Childs Funeral Home is in charge. She died on March 17, 2006. Survivors are: daughter, Brenda Johnson; sons, Calvin Simpson, Willie and Deann Sims, Ronnie and Maggie Sims, Rev. Anthony and Betty Sims; sister, Mrs. Ollie Toland.

Robert A. “Bobby” White
MURRELLS INLET — Robert A. “Bobby” White, 57, husband of Jean F. White, died Friday, March 17, 2006, in Grand Strand Regional Medical Center at Myrtle Beach.

Born in Kershaw County, he was a son of Mary B. White and the late William D. White.

He was a member of St. John United Methodist Church at Springhill and retired from the S.C. Department of Transportation.

Survivors besides his wife of Murrells Inlet and his mother of Sumter include a son, Robbie White and his wife, Sonja, of Myrtle Beach; two grandchildren, Anthony White and Kaitland Jackson; a stepson, Pat Wynn and his wife, Lesley, and their daughter, Hailey, of Atlanta; a brother, Dennis White and his wife, Lena, of Sumter; a sister-in-law, Becky White of Ashwood; four nieces; a nephew; a great-nephew, and his faithful companions, Winnie and Silky.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Doug White.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the St. John United Methodist Church with the Rev. Vince Halter and the Rev. Ed Sanders officiating. Burial will be in the St. John United Methodist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Sunday at Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home and other times at 2985 Red Hill Road.

Memorials may be made to St. John United Methodist Church, 1612 Blackgum Lane, Ridgeway, SC 29130.

Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home of Bishopville is in charge of arrangements.

George Thurm
CAMDEN — George Augustus Thurm, 68, went to be with the Lord on March 17, 2006, after a short battle with cancer. He was born on September 3, 1937, in Washington , D.C. and was the son of the late Julius and Rose Stickell Thurm. He leaves behind his loving wife and best friend of 47 ½ years, Joyce Dixon Thurm.

Besides his wife, he is survived by five children and their spouses, Darlene and Eddie Gardner of Camden, SC, Rhonda and Erik Templar of Camden, SC, Sharon and Jeff Jackson of Jensen Beach, FL, Darrell and Andrea Thurm of Monroe, NC and Matthew and Marianne Thurm of Summerville, SC; twelve grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Adele Kotlarsic of Port Orange, FL and Nancy Thurm of Parkton, MD.

George served in the United States Air Force in Myrtle Beach, SC and Tripoli, North Africa. He was the owner of Palmetto Insulation Company. He was a member of Malvern Hill Baptist Church.

Pallbearers will be Gerald Watts, Garth Horton, Mackey Williams, Carl Danielson, John Squires and James Brogdon.

Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Sunday, March 19, 2006, at Kornegay Funeral Home, Camden Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, March 20, 2006, at Malvern Hill Baptist Church. The service will be conducted by Reverend Greg Allen, Reverend Philip McNeal and Reverend Richard Cameron. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

Jack R. Hubbard Sr.
BARNWELL — Jack R. Hubbard, Sr., 77, died Friday, March 17, 2006, in Barnwell, SC.

Mr. Hubbard was born in Hardeeville, SC, and was the son of the late Grayson Knight Hubbard and the late Pauline Wilson Hubbard Taylor. He was a Seaman Apprentice in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He received the WWII Victory Medal and served aboard the NTC Baimbridge, MD, the USS Hank DD 702 and the USS English DD 696. He retired in 1990 as road maintenance supervisor for Barnwell County and previously worked as dispatcher for the SC Wildlife Dept. for 10 years. He also was a retired row crop and cattle farmer. Mr. Hubbard was a member of the Barnwell United Methodist Church.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 20, 2006, at the Mole Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Stephen Burnette officiating. Burial will follow in the Barnwell United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4-6 p.m. Sunday at Mole Funeral Home.

Survivors include: one son, Jack R. (Rudy) Hubbard Jr. of Barnwell; daughters, Lillian All (Mel) Rosen of Sanford, FL, Jacqueline P. Hubbard of Winter Park, FL, Elizabeth “Beth” H. (Roger) Riley of Barnwell; grandchildren, Michael Sheldon Rosen of Sanford, FL, Corey Leighton Riley of Barnwell, Shelby Elizabeth Riley of Barnwell; special companion, Effie Mae Barker Sanders of Barnwell; sisters, Grace H. (Lavern) Still of Blackville and Betty H. Wall of Atlanta, GA.

He was predeceased by his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. O.W. Wilson and Senator and Mrs. W.R. Hubbard.

Troy Melton Pope
CONWAY — Troy Melton Pope, age 90, of Pope Martin Road in the Toddville community of Horry County died Friday, March 17, 2006, at his residence.

Born October 11, 1915, in Georgetown County he was the son of the late Richard “Son” J. and Annie Mae Carter Pope. Mr. Pope was a retired farmer and had formerly worked for the South Carolina Department of Transportation. He had also owned and operated a shoe repair shop in Conway. Mr. Pope attended Little Lamb Pentecostal Holiness Church and loved fishing and wood working. He was preceded in death by his wife, Claudie Mae Pope in 1998; a son, Paul Leonard Pope; a granddaughter, Robin Victoria Fisk; three brothers, James, Holland, and Fred Pope and a sister, Mae Cameron.

Survivors include six sons, Only Milton Pope and wife Mackie of Argentina, South America, Kenneth Earl Pope and wife Jada of Conway, Joseph Daniel Pope of Conway, David Carlton Pope of Hemingway, Troy Benjamin Pope and wife Deborah of Columbia, Samuel Legrande Pope and wife Teresa of Knoxville, TN; three daughters, Sarah Elizabeth Hursey and husband John of Columbia, Annette Pope Morgan and husband Dean of Scranton, Claudia Victoria Hartshorn and husband Lee of Mesa, AZ; 32 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and a sister-in-law, Mary Jane Pope of Hemingway.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, March 20, 2006, from Little Lamb Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Tereyl Prosser officiating. Burial will follow at State Branch Cemetery directed by Goldfinch Funeral Home, Conway Chapel. The family will receive friends from 7:00- 9:00 p.m. Sunday, March 19, 2006, at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Mercy Hospice of Horry County, P.O. Box 50640, Myrtle Beach, SC 29579.
