Richard Eldon “Dickie” Horton

PELION — Services for Richard Eldon “Dickie” Horton, 60, of Pelion, SC, will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, November 14, 2005, in the Chapel of Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington, officiated by Brother Howie Curtis. Burial and military rites will follow in Oaklawn Cemetery in Pelion.

Pallbearers will be Larry Sullivan, David Blanks, Shannon Whitten, Alvin Carnes, Donnie Northcutt and Ronnie Horton. Honorary pallbearers will be Herbert Horton, Paul Horton, Danny Northcutt, Bryan Northcutt and William Bowman. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Mr. Horton died Saturday, November 12, 2005. Born in Allendale County, SC, he was the son of the late Paul Allen and Mamie Irie Jarrell Horton.

He was a veteran of the United States Air Force. Mr. Horton was a member of Mt. Beulah Baptist Church in Windsor, SC, and had retired from Carolina Eastman, formerly Kodak.

Surviving are his wife, Carol Northcutt Horton of Pelion; daughters and son-in-law, Misty Lee Horton of Pelion, Toni Marie and Donnie Cranfield of New Bern, NC; sister and brother-in-law, Bernice and Vernon Collins of Newport News, VA; brothers and sisters-in-law, Herbert and Nancy Horton, Paul and Grace Horton, Ronnie and Sybil Horton, all of Barnwell; grandchildren, Brandon and Austin Cranfield; godmother, Mary Rogers of Barnwell; and little dog, “Girlie.”

Dr. Ernest Lee Corley Jr.

CLEMSON — Dr. Ernest Lee Corley, Jr. of 150 Downs Boulevard, died Saturday, November 5, 2005.

Born in Saluda County, South Carolina, July 17, 1924, he was the youngest of eight children born to Elvira Jamima Banks Corley and Ernest Lee Corley.

One sister, Emily Corley Holleman of Seneca, and a number of nieces and nephews survive him.

He served his country in Europe during World War II with the 8th Armored and 83rd Infantry Division.

Dr. Corley, a member of the Clemson University Class of 1949, went from a family farm and a one-room schoolhouse in Saluda County to become one of the top officials with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He graduated from Clemson with high honors, with a B.S. in Dairy Science. He was a member of the Alpha Zeta Club (agriculture honor society) and received the Anderson Fellowship. During his years at Clemson he played football three years and baseball two years.

He attended graduate school at the University of Wisconsin where he earned his MS and PhD. After graduation he joined the faculty doing teaching, research and extension.

Dr. Corley was appointed director of Dairy Herd Improvement in the Agricultural Research Service of the USDA at Beltsville, MD. He was appointed Chief of the Dairy Cattle Research Branch and held a number of higher-level positions thereafter. He retired as Director of Agricultural Research in the South Atlantic Area, including Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. As a public servant, he received many honors including the Presidential Management Improvement Award, which was presented by President Jimmy Carter in the White House. His favorite hobby was flying his own private airplane.

Dr. Corley was a member of Ft. Hill Presbyterian Church. The church library bears his name.

At Clemson University he was a member of the Benefactors of 1889, the Benjamin Ryan Tillman Society and the John C. Calhoun Society. He was awarded the Alumni Fellow Award in the College of Agriculture, Forestry and Life Sciences.

Dr. Corley established the Ernest L. Corley, Jr. Trustees Chair in bovine livestock research, the Ernest L. Corley, Jr. Endowed Scholarship for students from Saluda County, the Ernest L. Corley, Jr. Endowed Graduate Assistantship, all in the College of Agriculture, Forestry and Life Sciences.

In lieu of flowers memorial gifts may be made to the Clemson University Foundation for the Ernest L. Corley Endowed Trustees Chair, 110 Daniel Drive, Clemson, SC 29634.

A memorial service will be held at Fort Hill Presbyterian Church in Clemson Wednesday, November 9, at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. James T. Richardson officiating. Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery, on Clemson’s campus.

Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home, Central-Clemson Commons, is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Nettie Dickerson

WEST COLUMBIA — Nettie DuRant Dickerson, age 81, widow of John Edward Dickerson, Sr., died Friday, November 4, 2005, in West Columbia, S.C.

Born in Ridgeland, S.C., on November 29, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Kathleen Elizabeth Nettles DuRant and the late Cecil Lee DuRant.

Mrs. Dickerson lived a full life which included working as a nurse in the Army Nurse Corps on a hospital ship off the coast of Italy during WWII (where she attained the rank of Second Lieutenant), working 22 years as the Nurse Administrator at the South Carolina State Cancer Clinic at Baptist Hospital, and starting a family business, BankAir Airlines and Columbia Aviation. Mrs. Dickerson has been inducted into the South Carolina Aviation Association Aviator Hall of Fame and has served on the advisory board to the Dean of the College of Nursing at SC MUSC College of Nursing. She was a 1944 graduate of the State Hospital School of Nursing and received a BSN from the University of South Carolina College of Nursing in 1964. She also received an Honorary Doctorate Degree from the Medical University of South Carolina in 1999. She was instrumental in the development of the Dickerson Center for Children. Mrs. Dickerson was extremely active at Westside Baptist Church in West Columbia for many years.

Visitation will be held at Thompson’s Funeral Home in Lexington on Sunday, November 6, from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted on Monday, November 7, 2005, at 3:00 p.m. at Transfiguration Lutheran Church in Cayce, South Carolina, by Reverend Alexander H. Twedt.

Nettie Dickerson is survived by her special companion and best friend, Robert A. Brown; her daughter, Jeanne Cook Wigginton and husband David Wigginton; son John Dickerson, Jr. and his wife, Linda; son, Charlie Dickerson and his wife, Barbara; grandchildren Beth Dickerson, Kim Cook Harbison, Kayce Cook Clampitt, Charlie Dickerson, Jr., Alicia Dickerson Branham, John Dickerson, III, Allan Dickerson, and Cynthia Cook Viteri; great-grandchildren, Clark, Brett, Christopher, Lyndsey, Blake, Kayde, Cade, Brady, and Ryan; and sister Marguerite “Honey” DuRant Harris and brother Cecil John DuRant and his wife Lou.

Pallbearers are Linier R. Brown, Dennis V. Stallings, Leonora Smith Stallings, M. Banks Smith, Douglas R. Harris, C. John DuRant, Jr., and Michael L. DuRant.

The family requests all memorials be made to the Dickerson Center for Children.

Cooper Ray Tanner

LEXINGTON — Services for Cooper Ray Tanner, 11, will be held Tuesday, November 8, 2005, at 1:00 p.m. at Pond Branch Methodist Church with interment to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday, November 7, 2005, from 6:00 until 9:00 p.m. at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel. Memorials may be made to Gilbert Dixie Youth Baseball.

Cooper died Saturday, November 5, 2005. Born in Lexington, SC, he was the son of Deb and Michael Tanner. He was a 6th grader at Gilbert Middle School and his most recent accomplishment was Powder Puff Queen. He played baseball, basketball, football and loved swimming, hunting and skateboarding and fishing. He was a friend to many, a teacher to some and loved by all.

Surviving are his mother, Deb Tanner of Lexington; father, Michael Tanner of Gilbert; maternal grandparents, Jimmy and Annie Kyzer of Gilbert; paternal grandparents, Delma and Jackie Tanner of Pelion; aunts and uncles, Danny and Cindy Kyzer, Tim and Wanda Amick and Todd Kyzer, all of Gilbert, Susan and Phil Tindell of Pelion, Gretchen Barrs of Pelion, John and Jennifer Kyzer of Gilbert, Adam “Bubba” and Candi “Sissy” Kyzer, and Mr. John; cousins, Zek, Ben, Sam, Hannah, Kaci, Hunter, Holly, Bridget, Jackie, Joy and Dee.

Patricia P. Terry
BRUNSON — Mrs. Patricia “Patsy” P. Terry, 66, of Brunson died Thursday morning at her residence in Brunson after an extended illness.

Born May 6, 1940, in Sycamore, SC, she was the daughter of the late Farnum Priester and Lorraine Lyons Priester. She was a floral designer with Butler’s Florist in Allendale and a member of the Evergreen Garden Club. She was a member of Brunson Baptist Church where she had served as the church clerk and was a member of the Women’s Missionary Union.

She is survived by her husband, Ulis Nelson Terry of the home; three daughters, Diane Martin and husband, Mike, of Eutawville, Jenny Swofford and husband, Sam, of St. Matthews and Sandy Clifton and husband, Toby, of Matthews, NC; one daughter-in-law, April Terry of Hampton; one brother, Ronnie Priester of Fairfax; one sister, Rosalind Mole of Brunson. There are 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She was predeceased by her son, Tony Terry.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. at Brunson Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. David Deming and directed by Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home of Hampton. Burial will follow in Fairfax Cemetery in Fairfax.

Friends may call at the funeral home in Hampton Friday evening from 7 until 9 p.m. and before 2 p.m. Saturday when the casket will be placed in the church prior to services.

Memorials may be made to Brunson Baptist Church, 63 Manker St., Brunson, SC 29911 or the charity of one’s choice.

Margaret Sadler Copeland
CLINTON — Margaret Sadler Copeland, widow of Carol “Red” Copeland, passed away June 8, 2006, in Clinton, SC, at age 93.

Mrs. Copeland was active in First Presbyterian Church of Clinton and served as a Sunday School teacher and officer of the Women of the Church. She was also a former teacher, basketball and tennis coach. She was active in the YMCA and enjoyed playing golf and tennis.

She is survived by her son, Thomas W. Copeland of Clinton; and two grandchildren, Tommy Copeland of Charleston, SC, and Carol Sadler Copeland of Clinton and Rock Hill, SC; a brother, Milton Sadler of Rock Hill; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a sister, Frances Sadler Poe and a brother, David Hope Sadler.

Graveside services will be held in Rosemont Cemetery in Clinton at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 10th, where the family will greet friends after the service.

Memorials may be made to Presbyterian Home, 801 Musgrove Street, Clinton, SC 29325 or to the charity of one’s choice.

Elsie Norris Davis
FLORENCE — Elsie Norris Davis, 92, of Florence, died Thursday, June 8, 2006, in a Florence hospital after an illness.

Mrs. Davis was born in Florence, a daughter of the late Franklin C. and Melvina Mishoe Norris. She attended Winthrop College after graduating Dillon High School. Mrs. Davis was a homemaker and a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church. She was a Sunday School teacher at First Baptist Church in Dillon for 20 years and also taught at a local Bible College for five years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, W. Thad Davis Sr., who died in 1998; two brothers, Frank C. Norris and Wells Norris; a sister, Kathleen Richardson.

Surviving are a son, Dr. Thad Davis, Jr. and his wife, Jeanette C., of Florence; three grandchildren, Dr. Tripp (Hayley) Davis of N. Myrtle Beach, Dr. Todd Davis of Columbia and Kimberly (Bill) Badder of Florence; three great-grandchildren, Katherine, Cole and Caroline; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, June 11, 2006, at Trinity Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery in Dillon, SC, directed by Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home of Florence.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Saturday, June 10, 2006, at the funeral home and other times at the residence of her son, Dr. Thad Davis, Jr., 409 Cherokee Road, Florence.

Memorials may be made to Trinity Presbyterian Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 3865, Florence, SC 29502.

Daisy Lindsay Lindler
IRMO — Mrs. Daisy Lindsay Lindler, 58, of 7547 Eastview Drive, Irmo, S.C., died Thurday, June 8, 2006, in Lexington Medical Center in West Columbia, S.C.

Born in Newberry County, she was the daughter of Mr. Herman Reeder and the late Daisy Lindsay.

She was a member of Mount Moriah A.M.E. Church in Prosperity, S.C., and also a member of the Women’s Home Aid Society.

She had retired from S.C. Department of Corrections and was formerly employed as Director of Library Services.

Surviving in addition to her father of Newberry, S.C., are her husband, Eddie E. Lindler of the home; four daughters, Darlene Lindler-Govan of Columbia, S.C., Melissa Lindler of Irmo, S.C., Tekisha Lindler, M.D., of Loma Linda, California and Eddie Lindler of Irmo, S.C.; one brother, Willie H. (Marla) Lindsay of East Orange, N.J.; two sisters, Katie M. Lindsay of Newberry, S.C., and Lisa L. Lindsay of Columbia, S.C.; two special nieces, La Toya Lindsay of Columbia, S.C., and Katie (Shane) McCravey of Charleston, S.C.; one uncle, David Lindsay of Newberry, S.C.; two god-children, Andrew Kessler and La Tonya Gibson; one brother-in-law, Roosevelt (Gwen) Lindler; two sisters-in-law, Sarah Towsend and Bessie White; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday at Mount Moriah A.M.E. Church in Prosperity, S.C. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Viewing at the church will begin one hour prior to the service. Arrangements by Wilson Funeral Home of Newberry, S.C.

The family will receive friends on Sunday evening, June 11, 2006, beginning at 6 p.m. at Leevy’s Funeral Home Chapel, 1831 Taylor Street, Columbia, SC.

Richard Leighton Rael
COPE — Richard Leighton Rael, 17, of 823 Snapdragon St., Cope, died Wednesday, June 7, 2006. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 10, 2006, at St. George Baptist Church in the R.O.C. in Orangeburg, officiated by the Rev. Jimmy Hanf and Mr. James Blewett. The casket will placed in the church one hour before the service. Burial will be in Crestlawn Memorial Gardens in Orangeburg. Thompson Funeral Home, Inc., Orangeburg, is in charge. Pallbearers will be Austin Davis, Billy Bell, Lance Fanning, Paul Shipp, Joshua August, Gilbert Rael III, Mike Rael, Gary Swaboda and Mark Rael, Jr.

Mr. Rael was born January 5, 1989, in Orangeburg, a son of Richard T. Rael and Loxie Love Rael. He was a rising senior at Edisto High School and was employed with House of Pizza in Bamberg. He was an active member of the F.F.A., a member of St. George Baptist Church and an active member of the Youth Group. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Charles Love, and by his uncle, Ricky Love.

Survivors include his parents, Richard and Loxie Rael of Cope; one sister, Krysten Rael of Cope; his maternal grandmother, Helen Cooper Love of North Santee; paternal grandfather, Gilbert L. Rael, Jr. of Belen, N.M.; paternal grandmother, Gloria Jean Rael of Belen, N.M., maternal great-grandmother, Eva Cooper of Salley; maternal great-grandmother, Pearl Love of Blackville; paternal great-grandmother, Patricia Rael of Belen, N.M.; aunt and uncle, Debra and Robin Fralix of Lugoff; uncles, Michael Rael, Mark Rael, Jeffrey Rael and Gilbert Rael III, all of Belen, N.M.; a special friend, Nicole Swaboda of Cope; and a number of cousins and many friends.

Friends may call at the residence, 823 Snapdragon Street, Cope, and at the funeral home. Visitation will be held 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Thompson Funeral Home, Inc. in Orangeburg.
