Benjamin “Bennie” Franklin Frazier Jr.
COLUMBIA — Mr. Benjamin “Bennie” Franklin Frazier, Jr., 82, died Tuesday, June 6, 2006. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 13, 2006, at noon at Wesley United Methodist Church, 1725 Gervais Street in Columbia. The body will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Williams Funeral Home, 1808 Washington Street in Columbia, on Monday, 6:00-8:00 p.m., and at other times friends may call at the home, 929 Pine St. Burial will take place in Palmetto Cemetery on Highway 321 in Columbia.

An only son of the late Annie and Benjamin F. Frazier, Sr., Benjamin F. Frazier, Jr. was born February 14, 1925, in Columbia. Attending the public schools, he graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in June 1943, thereafter entering the United States Army in July. He served in Camp Ellis, Illinois, and in England.

In 1953, Bennie Frazier was one of the first African-American firemen to be employed by the Columbia Fire Department, serving there for 12 years. While there, he realized that he had a special talent: doing artwork - painting and lettering. At the fire department, he was assigned to produce signs not related to his job and for which he was not compensated. He decided at this point to use his God-given talent and opened his own business: The Frazier Sign Painting Company in 1965. The Midlands embraced his work, the decorative, colorful, and exacting signs in many, many places across the landscape of Richland and Lexington Counties. Then too, Mr. Frazier donated his artwork to many programs, organizations, and exhibits because of his firm belief that contributions to the community are an inherited responsibility.

Family was also an important endeavor in the life of Bennie Frazier. He married his sweetheart, Delores Bernice Hiller, and to this union seven children (1 daughter, 6 sons) were born. He always found time for family matters: weekends on travel excursions, building and flying model airplanes, riding bicycles, riding go-carts, street skating up and down Pine and Oak Streets. All of this was interspersed with church-going on Sundays.

As the children grew older, Mr. Frazier noted some musical ability among them. He ventured out, buying band equipment, organizing four of his children - along with several of their musical friends, and creating a local band titled “Soul Dimensions.” This band traveled around the State of South Carolina, playing for proms, dances, banquets, weddings, and many other occasions for eight years. In this way, he kept tab not only on his teenage children, but children of others who needed guidance and caring and supervision. All in all, he was a mentor, a role model, a man of integrity, an outstanding citizen, a devoted husband, and a supportive father.

He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Mrs. Delores Hiller Frazier; seven children, Jablonski (Gwen), Cheryl Frazier-Jackson, Maurice, Charles, DeWitt, Christopher (Patricia), Dwaine (Tabthia); 14 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Zenobia Frazier Williams of Jacksonville, Florida; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Alice Hiller Goodrum of Chicago; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, devoted friends, and classmates.

“Oh how beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news.” (NIV). It is written that a thousand years is but a day with the Lord, and on June 7, 2006, one of God’s best entered into the everlasting presence and Kingdom of our Lord and Savior, Jesus the Christ.

Bishop Robert L. Bishop served God diligently with his time and talents in his family, church and surrounding community. Today, we may grieve for this loved one, this faithful servant because he will be missed in the physical and in the natural. But in the spirit, we rejoice and we celebrate because we know that He is in the presence of our Lord. To God be the glory for the wonderful things He has done through his manservant, Bishop Robert L. Bishop.

We knew him as a Bishop, and a man who had such a great heart, such a yearning desire to be a vessel through which he might assist and uplift humanity everyday. Bishop leaves a legacy of church, family, and friendship behind that is a model for all today. He lived this legacy and shared it with his loving wife for over 45 years, Rev. Dr. Azalee C. Bishop. He also shared it with his children, Debra Jones (Leon), Trenton, New Jersey, Angela Bishop, Robin Jefferson, Sylvester Grazier, Roderick Lorance Bishop (Errica), Aaron Robert Elo Bishop (Jennifer), all of Columbia, SC; grandchildren, Christopher Bishop, Joseph Bishop, Danny Bishop, Dannyelle (fiance Ryan) Jones, Noel Jones, Rebekah Bishop, Roderick Eric Bishop, Matrease Grazier; one great-grandchild, Ryelle Jones; one brother, James C. Bishop (Gwen), Newberry, SC; and a host of nephews, nieces, and other loving relatives and friends.

Bishop was preceded in death by a brother, Freddie Lee Bishop; and a sister, Julia Bishop.

His legacy has reached into the hearts of women, men, and children throughout the Eau Claire community, the city of Columbia, and the entire state of South Carolina.

There are no adequate words to describe his faithfulness, his diligence, his pride, and his sacrifice. He was a man after God’s own heart. His life and his legacy are a challenge to us all to live closer to God and to love our family, friends and fellow man more. He has left teachings, words of wisdom, and a wonderful life in obedience to God for everyone who knew him. To God be the glory for the things that He has done. We will always remember the legacy of this elder, our brother, father, leader, and friend.
