Charles B. Jordan
PELION — Memorial services for Charles B. Jordan, 63, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, November 5, 2006, at McLeod United Methodist Church, 11640 Garners Ferry Road, Eastover, SC 29044. Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel, is in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Jordan passed away Friday, November 3, 2006. Born in Wichita, KS, he was the son of the late Clyde Jordan and Thelma Crock Jordan. Mr. Jordan was a steel worker with the steel industry.

Mr. Jordan is survived by his sons, Danny Jordan (Kim) and Randy Jordan, all of Eastover; grandchildren, Amanda, D.J. and David Jordan; and sister, Donna Renecki of Pelion.

Jane Riggin
NEWBERRY — Jane Grimison Riggin, 75, of 2023 Main St., Newberry, died Friday, November 3, 2006, at her residence. Her smile shone on all those around her and brought joy to everyone.

She was born December 18, 1930, in Allentown, PA, and was a daughter of the late Edwin Douglas and Estelle Wissinger Grimson. Jane was a retired first grade teacher with Newberry Academy. She was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, a member of the church choir, a volunteer and volunteer coordinator for the Newberry Opera House. She was a past president of the Newcomer Club, Fine Arts Club and Newberry College Faculty Women’s Club.

Mrs. Riggin is survived by her daughter, Kathleen Ione Riggin of Newberry; two sons, Douglas Staunton Riggin of Buffalo, NY, and Thomas Hancock Riggin of Irmo; three sisters, Cecil Woodman Thompson of Huntington, L.I., NY, Ruth Woodman Czar, Paultney, VT, and Ann Woodman Shoemaker of Indian Springs, AL; three grandchildren, Ryan Riggin, Jeffery Riggin and Sarah Elizabeth Mei Riggin. She was predeceased by her parents, her foster parents, H. Staunton and Cecil Cornwall Woodman, and grandparents, Mrs. and Mrs. Thomas Grimison and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Wissinger. Jane lived life with an immeasurable zest. Her spirit, fight and determination knew no bounds, and her dignity and heart have been an inspiration beyond understanding. She smiled on everyone. The Lord is her Shepherd.

Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Monday at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer. Interment will be in Newberry Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Sunday at Whitaker Funeral Home.

The family suggests memorials be made to Newberry Academy, 2055 Smith Road, Newberry, SC 29108, Newberry Opera House P.O. Box 357, Newberry, SC 29108 or Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, P.O. Box 382, Newberry, SC 29108.

Mary Joe Thorpe
COLUMBIA — Graveside service for Mary Joe Thorpe, 78, of Columbia, will be held 11 o’clock, Monday, November 6, 2006, in Elmwood Cemetery with Rev. Brian Peake officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 o’clock Sunday at Shives Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Eau Claire Presbyterian Church, 629 Wildwood Ave., Columbia, SC 29203.

Mrs. Thorpe died Friday, November 3, 2006. Born in Chester, SC, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Sarah Franklin Wylie. She was a longtime member of Eau Claire Presbyterian Church and retired from the S.C. Employment Commission where she worked as a legal secretary for many years. Mrs.Thorpe was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who devoted her early years to raising her sons before returning to work.

Survivors include her sons, Reverend Jim Thorpe and wife, Mary, of Ridgeway, Joe Thorpe and wife, Andrea, of Columbia, Kevin Thorpe and wife, Melissa, of Gilbert; grandchildren, Steven, Julia, David and Kaylee Thorpe; sisters, Gina Caughman and husband, Bill, of Columbia, Sally Vess of Chester, Nancy Wylie of Lexington. She was predeceased by her husband, Archie S. Thorpe, Jr., and brother, M.F. “Buddy” Wylie.

Adrian Lamont Washington
HOPKINS — Adrian Lamont Washington , 29, of 1100 Motley Road, will be held 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Ladson’s Chapel Missionary Baptist Church with interment to follow in the church cemetery. Mr. Washington will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. Visitation will be held from 4-9 p.m. Monday evening. J.P. Holley Funeral Home, Garners Ferry Road Chapel, is in charge.

Mr. Washington is the son of Deacon Thomas and Bernadette Washington Sumter. He died Wednesday, November 1, 2006. He is survived by his wife; Tamara Renee’ Washington ; parents; sisters, Stacey Boswell, Catherine Sumter; and brothers, Thomas, III and Solomon Sumter.

James Robert Long
LATTA — Mr. James Robert Long, 89, died Friday, November 3, 2006, in McLeod Medical Center of Dillon. Funeral services were Sunday, November 5, 2006, at 3:00 p.m. at Latta Baptist Church with burial in Dothan Cemetery, directed by Kannaday’s Funeral Home of Latta.

Mr. Long was born July 17, 1917, in Latta, a son of the late Alexander Long and Frances Elizabeth O’Brien Jones Long. Mr. Long was a farmer and a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in WWII. He was a member of Latta Baptist Church and the Senior Men’s Bible Class. He was a deacon and past Sunday School director and teacher. He was also a member of the Dalcho Masonic Lodge #160 and a member of the Latta Lion’s Club.

He is survived by his wife, Lillian Stanton Long of the home; sons, Robert Stanton (Darlene) Long of Mill Spring, NC; James Stephen “Steve” (Holly) Long of Columbus, NC; daughter, Elizabeth Renee Long (Frank) Jackson of Florence, SC; son-in-law Jimm Jarrett of Richland, WA; grandchildren, Kristian Gorton, Kelly Jackson, Krista Jordan, James Jarrett, III, Jason Long, Michael Long, Maddy Long and Eli Long; and two great-grandchildren.

Mr. Long was preceded in death by daughter, Nancy Jean Long Jarrett.

Memorials may be made to Latta Baptist Church, 202 N. Marion St., Latta, SC 29565.

Willie Mae Padget
SALUDA — Willie Mae Butler Padget, 86, of 303 Pine Grove Road, died Friday, November 3, 2006, in Self Regional Healthcare.

Born in Saluda County, and a daughter of the late William and Rosa Lee Rambo Butler, she was the wife of Morris Faircloth. She was first married to the late Woodrow Watson Padget. Mrs. Padget was a retired textile employee and was a member of Emory United Methodist Church.

Surviving are her husband, Morris Faircloth; one son, John Padget of Saluda; two brothers, Ben Butler of Bamberg and Jimmy Butler of Greenwood; one sister, Bobbie Herlong of Saluda; two grandchildren, Jessica Salters Smith and Bert Padget; and a great-grandchild, Colby Smith.

Mrs. Padget was preceded in death by a daughter, Bonnie Jean Salters; two sisters, Lee Butler Padgett and Ellen Matthews; and two brothers, Herman Butler and Grover Butler.

Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 7, 2006, at Emory United Methodist Church with Rev. Joyce Murphy officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Monday evening at Ramey Funeral Home.

Anne Whitener
NEWBERRY — Anne Wilson (Annie Ruth) Whitener, widow of Guy Vanderbilt Whitener, Jr., passed away Sunday, November 5, 2006, in Newberry County Memorial Hospital. Visitation for Mrs. Whitener will be Monday, November 6, 2006, at her residence at 2323 Wells Park Drive at 6:00 p.m. Funeral services will be at Central United Methodist Church Tuesday, November 7, 2006, at 3:00 p.m. Interment will follow in Newberry Memorial Gardens. The family will further celebrate Mrs. Whitener’s life at her residence following the burial.

Mrs. Whitener is survived by two daughters, Stuart Whitener Kennemore and her husband, Paul, of Greenwood, SC, and Leslie Ann Whitener of Hilton Head Island, SC; a grandson, Paul Hampton Kennemore, III, DMD and his wife, Kim, of Moore, SC; and a sister-in-law, Billie Wilson of Belton, SC.

Whitaker Funeral Home, Newberry, is assisting the family.

Shirlee Jean Gardinier
COLUMBIA — Sergeant First Class Shirlee Jean Gardinier, U.S. Army, (Ret.), of Spring Valley West, passed peacefully on to her final heavenly posting Thursday 2 November 2006. A joyful celebration of Sergeant Gardinier’s life will be held at the family home in Columbia on 25 November, Thanksgiving weekend. Interment services will be held in Towson, Maryland, at later date.

Sergeant Gardinier spent her early years in Keokuk, Iowa and Indiana. She entered the Woman’s Army Corps (WAC) during the Korean War era and remained for a 20 year career, retiring from the Regular United States Army. Her stellar career included duty at the Leadership School at Ft. Lee, Virginia and as one of the Army’s most successful recruiters with postings in California, New York City, Columbia, SC, New Orleans and in Miami during the Cuban Missile Crisis. She was assigned to SHAPE (NATO) Headquarters in Paris, France, and WAC School, Ft. McClellan, AL. Her final tour was as a First Sergeant in Germany. After her military retirement she worked for the U.S. Postal Service for nine years in Oregon, moving to Honolulu, Hawaii, for several years before retiring in Columbia.

Sergeant Gardinier, beloved daughter of Alfred A. and Beulah McMillan Gardinier, was born 1 June, 1928. She is survived by brother, Harry Dale Gardinier and his wife, Joyce, of Indianapolis, Indiana.

She is also survived by her adopted daughter, CDR Virginia C. Mullen-Gardinier, U.S. Navy (Ret.), of Columbia; cousins, HMC(SS/SW) Gene P. McAvoy, U.S. Navy (Ret.), Lee and Van Wood, Eleanor, Margaret and Mary Matheson; nieces and nephews, Edward, Timothy, Bradley, Virginia, Joseph, Katherine, Charles, Linda McAvoy; and 10 great-nieces and nephews, special family - Barbara Dendle of Wahiawa, Hawaii, Dr. Marilyn Palmer of Portland, OR, Terry and Larry Grendell and children, Marilyn Chidsey and Lynn Bucklee of Huntington Beach, CA, Jim Turner, Steve Szala and the R Gregory, the T Ross, the J Ross, the L Harvel, the E Irby and the Fish/Welch families of Columbia.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her nephew, James McAvoy of Lehi, Utah, and Columbia, SC.

Sergeant Gardinier was a member of the Episcopal Church, the Havelock Society, and many professional and military organizations. She was a graduate of Monterey Community College, Monterey, California.

Remembrances in tribute to a Life Well Lived may be made to Sister Care of Columbia.

John Robert Parris
WEST COLUMBIA — Services for John Robert Parris, 75, will be held 3 p.m. Tuesday, November 7, 2006, at Eau Claire Baptist Church. Officiating will be Rev. Jimmy Goudelock and Rev. Hal Parris, entombment in Celestial Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. The family will receive friends from 6-8 Monday evening at Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington. Serving as pallbearers, John Beasley, Richard Murphy, Fred Parris, Kevin and Keith Parris, and Mike Smith. Honorary pallbearers will be Frank Hildebrand Sunday school class. At the request of the family, in lieu of flowers, please send memorials to Carolina Children’s Home, P.O. Box 4465, Columbia, SC 29240.

Mr. Parris passed away Saturday, November 4, 2006. Born in Inman, he was the son of the late William Henry Parris and Maude Allen Parris. He graduated from Spartanburg Junior College and attended the University of South Carolina. He was a member of Eau Claire Baptist Church and served as an usher, and a member of Eau Claire Masonic Lodge. He served in the U.S. Air Force and as a notary public. He retired after 31 years of loyal service from Lance, Inc. He was a volunteer for Lexington Medical Center for 11 years and employed with LMC for two years, and he worked with the S.C. Commission for the Blind Canteens. He spent his retirement with his loving wife at his mountain home in Cruso, NC, at Riverside Campground. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, and will be dearly missed by his family and his many friends.

Survived by his wife of 50 years, Dorothy Lou Wilson; sons, Jeff Parris and wife, Sherry, of Lyman, Rev. Hal Parris and wife, Ruth, of Greenville; daughters, Julia Parris of West Columbia, Kim Beasley and husband, Bubba, of Irmo; six grandchildren, Kevin Parris and wife, Crystal, of Liberty, Keith Parris of Lyman, Hillary Beasley and John Beasley of Irmo, Wilson Parris and Thomas Parris of Greenville; three great-grandchildren, Christian, Dylan and Cierra Parris of Liberty; brother, Van Parris of Lockhart. Mr. Parris was preceded in death by seven brothers, two sisters, a son, John Kevin Parris, and two grandchildren.

Alexander A. Korda
CAYCE — Family and friends are invited to a celebration of life for Mr. Alexander A. Korda, 92, of Cayce, Sunday, November 12, 2006, from 3 until 5 o’clock at the home of Mary Gregory, 1234 Lafayette Ave., Cayce SC. Memorials may be made to the Lions Eye Bank of S.C., 110 Medical Cr., West Columbia, SC 29169.

Mr. Korda died Saturday, November 4, 2006. Born in Brooklyn, NY, he was the son of the late Harry and Paraskeva Korda. Mr. Korda retired from the U.S. Army after 28 years where he served during WW II. He was a Russian language interpreter and aerial map analyzer. He served as a Boy Scout leader at Mt. Herman Lutheran Church and later established the scouting program at John G. Richards School for Boys. Mr. Korda was the recipient of one of the highest honors in scouting, the Silver Beaver Award.

Survivors include his daughters, Mary Korda Gregory of Cayce, Maria Korda Showers and partner, Stephen Mathis, of Columbia; grandson, Douglas Alexander Gregory and wife, Allison, of Santa Monica, CA; as well as a large extended family that called him “Uncle Al.” He was predeceased by his first wife of 48 years, Mary Elizabeth Leaphart Korda; and his second wife of second years, Nell Whitehead Korda.

His family would like to thank Bernice and David Shumpert, Curtis Turner, Tammy and Amos Pressley for their care and devotion.

William Howell Campbell
COLUMBIA — Service with military honors for William Howell Campbell, 83, will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society. Visitation will be Monday 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. Campbell, husband of the late Sue Hinson Campbell, died Sunday, November 05, 2006. Born in Lykesland, he was a son of the late Beauregard “B.G.” and Mary Magdeline Wallace Campbell. An Army veteran of WW II, he served in Europe and retired from Civil Service at Fort Jackson.

Mr. Campbell was a member of Mt. Elon Baptist Church.

Surviving are son and daughter-in-law, William D. “Bill” and Anne Campbell of Hopkins; daughters and son-in-law, Terri C. and Robert Fowler and Susan Melissa Campbell, all of Columbia; and grandchildren, Casey William Campbell and Jennifer Fowler Austin. He was predeceased by brother, John Edward Campbell; and sisters, Ruth Marsh, Ruby Shirah, Elinor Hendren and Margaret Hartley.

Samuel “Kinney” Boykin
BETHUNE — Funeral services for Samuel McKinnon “Kinney” Boykin, age 60, who died Nov. 5, will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. from Bethune Presbyterian Church. Rev. Jimmy Holley, James Hopkins and Neal Gainey will officiate. Burial will be in Turkey Creek Cemetery, directed by Norton Funeral Home, Hartsville Chapel. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Kinney was born in Bethune, a son of Sarah Ruth McKinnon Boykin and the late Dewey Samuel Boykin. Employed with Almond Forest, he served in the National Guard and was a member of the Pleasant Hill Hunting Club and Bethune Presbyterian Church. He was a devoted husband, father, son, brother and grandfather and had a host of friends.

Surviving are his wife, Dianne Tiller Boykin; mother; son, Jason Samuel Boykin, all of Bethune; daughter and son-in-law, Angelia Boykin and Kevin Todd Rickard, Sumter; brother, Dewey Neil Boykin, Bethune; granddaughter, Baileigh Madison Rickard; grandson; Harrison Todd Rickard, Sumter; special companion, his dog, Nubbie. Memorials may be made to a charity of ones’ choice.

Janie “Nook” Myers
MAYESVILLE — Janie “Nook” McMillan Myers, 77, died Wednesday, November 1, 2006, in Tuomey Health Care System, Sumter. Born December 15, 1928, in Mayesville, she was the daughter of the late James McMillan and Delia Johnson McMillan. She was also the wife of Franklin Myers.

Janie attended the public schools of Lee County. At an early age, she gave her life to Jesus Christ and served Him faithfully until He called her home. She became a member of St. Rest Holiness Church. She was later affiliated with Pentecostal Mission Temple. She was employed by Cover Manufacturer, from which she retired.

Survivors include her husband, Franklin Myers; five daughters, Flossie Gaile of Hampton, VA, Lillie Boatwright of Columbia, Mary (Bruce) Upton of Sweetwater, TN, Janie (Archie) Gregg and Catherine Myers, both of Mayesville; three sons, Willie (Jessie) Myers, Frank Myers of Mayesville, Thomas (Elissa) Myers of Sumter; three sisters, Rosa Lee Jones of Snow Hill, MD, Annie Williams, Ruth Moses of Mayesville; three brothers, Henry (Elaine) McMillan of Sumter, Willie Lee McMillian of Fort Pierce, FL, Johnny McMillan of Mayesville; 30 grandchildren (to include three devoted grandchildren, Ashley Myers, Derrick Wilson and Jacoby Myers); 35 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one aunt, Nettie Johnson of Woodrow; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held noon Monday, November 6, 2006, at St. Rest Holiness Church, Mayesville, with Bishop Tommie L. Doe, pastor, eulogist, assisted by Assistant Pastor Lillie Witherspoon and Minister Thomasina Moses.

Pallbearers were grandsons and great-grandsons.

Floral bearers were granddaughter and great-granddaughters.

Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery, Sumter.
