Dr. Jerry A. Howle

DARLINGTON - A memorial service for Dr. Jerry A. Howle of Reno, Nevada, will be held Thursday, May 20, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, Darlington directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Jerry, 58, died Saturday, May 15, in a plane crash near the Grand Canyon. He had two sons, Glenn Howle of Clemson, who died in the same accident and another son, Graham Howle who lives in Greenville with his wife, Marci and Jerry’s two grandchildren, Gray and Perrin.

Dr. Howle was a forensic psychiatrist and had a practice in Reno for almost 30 years. He earned a MD and PhD from the Medical University of South Carolina. He was a cum laude graduate of Furman University, 1967, and finished St. John’s High School in 1963. He was the son of the
late Glenn and Cleonita Ward Howle of Darlington.

In addition to his son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren, Dr. Howle is survived by two brothers, Kenneth and Philip Howle of Darlington and two sisters Miriam Grover of Effingham and Sally Ritchie of Newport News, VA.

Doris Gainey Ham

05/17/1949 - 5/24/2004

DARLINGTON- Doris Gainey Ham, age 55, died Monday morning, May 24, at her residence. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 Wednesday in Dovesville Church of God with interment following in the church Cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mrs. Ham was born in Darlington County daughter of Kathleen Hall Gainey Parnell and the late Monroe Gainey. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She was a member of Bishopville Church of God.

Surviving in addition to her mother of Dovesville, are her husband, Allen G. Ham of Darlington, a son Gene Ham of Darlington, a daughter Sheila Ham of Darlington, a grandson, Monroe Ham, three brothers; Robert, Charlie, and Wayne Gainey all of Dovesville, three-sisters; Carolyn Odom, Wanda Wilson, and Donna Register all of Dovesville, a step-father, Harvey Parnell, and a step-brother Rex Parnell, and two step sisters, Carolyn Lunsford and Barbara Small.

Joseph Stilton Hagins

02/25/1916 - 6/1/2004

DARLINGTON- Joseph Stilton Hagins, age 88, formerly of Abbeville and Camden, SC died Tuesday, June 1, 2004 at the Presbyterian Home of South Carolina, Florence, SC. Graveside funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday in Grove Hill Cemetery, Darlington, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mr. Hagins was born in Lancaster, SC, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Leslie Hagins, Sr.
He was married to the late Myrtis Holland Hagins.
He served his country with the United States Army during World War II and became an employee of Belk-Simpson Company in 1933 where he became manager after three short years. He later became general manager, vice-president and supervisor of several Belk stores until his retirement in 1978. Mr. Hagins then purchased Mary Rice of Camden . He closed the store in 2000. He served as member of the board of the Belk-Simpson Foundation, member of the Belk Planning Committee, for 14 years he was superintendent of the Sunday School of Main Street Methodist
Church, was a former District Lay Leader and former chairman of the church’s Board of Trustees.

Mr. Hagins was one of the organizers of the Methodist Home of the Aged in Orangeburg and served on the board as vice-chairman for 4 years. He was a member of the local Lions Club,charter member of the Abbeville Rotary Club, member of the board of the Abbeville County Memorial Hospital for 19 years, serving 17 years as chairman, member of the board of the
Abbeville Savings and Loan for more than 20 years, former board member of South Carolina National Bank, member of the Board of Counselors of Erskine College and was a Mason and Shriner. Mr. Hagins was a member of Littleton Street Methodist Church in Camden.

Surviving are one daughter, Rita Hagins Bagwell of Darlington and two grandchildren, James Brian(Melanie)Bagwell, Sr. of Darlington and Allison(Chris) Bagwell Clarke of Florence; also, one great-grandson, James Brian Bagwell, Jr.

Russell "Rusty" Waggoner

05/08/2002 - 5/31/2004

DARLINGTON - Russell “Rusty” Waggoner, age 2, died Sunday, May 31, 2004. Graveside services will be 4:30 p.m. Thursday in Grove Hill Cemetery directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Rusty was born in Florence County, son of Christopher Atkinson of Hartsville and Kristina Waggoner of Darlington. Surviving in addition to his mother and father are a brother, John Dudley, Jr., of the home; grandparents, great-grandparents, aunts and uncles.

The family will receive friends at the home, 832 Oleander Driver, Darlington, Wednesday,6 - 8 p.m.

Annie Mae Bell Thompson

05/02/1933 - 6/2/2004

LAMAR- Annie Mae Bell Thompson, age 71, died Wednesday night, June 2, 2004 at her residence. Graveside Services will be held at 11:00am Saturday in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Lamar directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mrs. Thompson was born in Darlington County, daughter of the late Johnny Spencer and Sizzie Amerson Bell. Mrs. Thompson lived in Sumter for most of her life. She was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are a husband Charles F. Thompson, III and two brothers, Robert W. Bell of Hartsvillle, and Pete Bell of Lamar, also a number of nieces and nephews.

Thelbert O.E. Sarvis

10/08/1930 - 7/18/2005

DARLINGTON - Thelbert O. E. Sarvis, age 74, died Monday, July 18, 2005.
Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home with interment following in Grove Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Sarvis was born in Horry County, son of the late Doc Benjamin and Madge Elizabeth Jones Sarvis. He was married to the late Connie Johnson Sarvis. He was retired from ESAB and enjoyed fishing and cooking. Mr. Sarvis was a member of the First Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Surviving are two sons, Ronnie Mitchell Sarvis of Wilmington, NC and Michael (Donna) Alford of Leeds, AL; two daughters, Dianne (William) Strawn and Jean (Ray) Peele both of Darlington; six grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren; brother, Michael Wayne Sarvis of Thomasville, NC and sisters, Betty Ann Fowler of Tabor City, NC and JoDean Sarvis Causey of High Point, NC.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, 6 - 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Kelvin Caudle

COLUMBIA — Funeral services for Kelvin Byron Caudle, 32, of Columbia will be held at 12 noon on Tuesday, November 9, 2004 at Greenlawn Funeral Home Chapel and interment to follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Upstate, 1835 Rogers Road, Anderson, SC 29621. Greenlawn Funeral Home is in charge.

Mr. Caudle died November 6, 2004. Born in Charlotte, NC he was the son of the late Archie Byron Caudle and Shirley Faye Polson Caudle. He was a member of Laurel Creek Baptist Church.

Surviving are his brothers, Robbie Caudle and his wife, Michelle, of West Columbia, SC, Jeff Caudle and his wife, Deborah of Rutherfordton, NC, and Mike Caudle; his grandfather, Wallace Polson of Rutherfordton, NC; his step-mother, Linda Caudle of Columbia, SC; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Constance Daley

LEXINGTON — Services for Constance (Connie) Daley, 72, will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 9, 2004 at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel with burial to follow at Southland Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Project Pet, PO Box 1777, Columbia, SC 29202.

Ms. Daley died Thursday, November 4, 2004. Born in Tully, NY she was the daughter of the late Ambrose and Grace June Daley.

She is survived by her daughters, Debbi Kennah and Kim Pendrak and her husband Ronnie; brothers, Doug and David Daley; sister Donna Burhans; cousin, Ellie Botts; grandchildren, Jim, Chrissy and Heather Pendrak, Larry Warner, Jim Lacey and Jenny Metcalf; great-grandchildren, Austin, Alissa, Ashlin, Wesley, Dalton and Courtney; and her four cats, Reba, Lullu, Kit Kat and Sadie.

Dr. Daniel Floyd

COLUMBIA — Dr. Daniel Justin Floyd, 78, of 4520 Trenholm Road, Columbia, SC, formerly of Fairmont, NC, died Saturday, November 6, 2004 in Dorn VA Hospital, Columbia, SC.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Monday at Trinity United Methodist Church, Fairmont, NC. Revs. Marc Werner and Rev. Robert Moore will officiate. Burial will be in Floyd Memorial Cemetery, Fairmont.

Survivors: daughters and sons-in-law, Lillian and Danny McCraw, Roanoke Rapids, NC, Meg and Bill Schwartz, Columbia, SC; grandchildren, Maggie Schwartz and Page Schwartz.

Dr. Floyd was preceded in death by a son, Daniel Page Floyd, and his parents, Graddy and Beulah Floyd.

Dr. Floyd practiced Dentistry in Fairmont for 42 years. He was a US Army Veteran of the Korean War; a Civitan, a Shriner, President of the North Carolina Dental Society; and a founding member of the South Robeson Medical Scholarship.

In lieu of flowers: Memorials to Trinity United Methodist Church, 307 Trinity St., Fairmont, NC 28340 or CF Foundation, P.O. Box 96305, Washington , DC 20090-6305.

The family received friends Sunday 5-6:30 PM at the home of Jetter and Carol Lewis, 1523 Magnolia Ave., Fairmont. Arrangements by Floyd Funeral Services of Fairmont, NC.

Leota Haines

WEST COLUMBIA — Services for Leota Curtis Haines, 101, will be conducted at 4:00 p.m. Monday from Nazareth United Methodist Church with the Rev. Joyce Murphy officiating. Burial will follow in Sugar Grove Cemetery of Wilmington, OH with the Smith Reynolds Funeral Home in charge. Barr-Price Funeral Home, Historic B-L Chapel is assisting the family in SC. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Carolina’s Community Hospice, Inc., 3096 Sunset Blvd., West Columbia, SC 29169.

Mrs. Haines died Saturday, November 6, 2004. She was born in Candler, NC a daughter of the late Andrew Julian and Ollie McElrath Curtis and was of the Methodist faith. Mrs. Haines was a former employee of the Biltmore House and was a retired restaurateur and gift shop operator in the Pisgah National Forest.

Surviving are sisters, Patsy McManaway of Batesburg; Jennie Mae Young of Candler, NC. She will be lovingly remembered and missed by 17 nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her first husband, Paul Pless and her second husband, Luther Haines; brothers, Frank and Charles Curtis; sisters, Montez Matheson, Ruth Woodard, Shirley Foster.
