WINNSBORO — Services for Waycaster Alexander are 3 p.m. today at Bethesda AME Zion Church with burial in Oakland Cemetery.

Survivors: wife, Mary L. Alexander, children, Martha A Thomas and Waycaster Alexander Jr., grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Betty Ruth Bennett
COLUMBIA — Memorial services for Betty Ruth Bennett, 74, will be held 2 p.m. Friday, November 10, 2006, at First Baptist Church of West Columbia, officiated by Rev. Dr. Lonnie F. Shull. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. Memorials may be made to SPCA, 121 Humane Lane, Columbia, SC 29209 or to the First Baptist Church of West Columbia, 400 State St., West Columbia, SC 29169.

Thompson Funeral Home of West Columbia is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Bennett died Monday, November 6, 2006. Born in Birmingham, AL, (because she wanted to be close to her mother), she was a daughter of the late Izell Burton Hayes and Ruth H.Taber. She was the granddaughter of Mabel E. Beecham, founder of Best Mattress Company. An area resident for most of her life, she was a graduate of Brookland-Cayce High School and attended Coker College and Columbia Bible College. Mrs. Bennett was a member of First Baptist Church of West Columbia and attended Sunday school. She was a member of the Shag Living Legends. A former administrative assistant, she worked at New York Life Insurance, South Carolina Election Commission and Bennett’s Upholstery Company.

Survivors include: daughter and son-in-law, Kelly Bennett Hight and husband Elonzo of Columbia; son and daughter-in-law, Burton Kirkland “Kirk” Bennett Jr. and wife, Lesley of Raleigh, NC; brother and sister-in-law, William “Billy” Hayes and wife, Barbara, of Pelion, SC; two grandchildren, Connor Madison Bennett and Burton Kirkland “Trex” Bennett III of Raleigh, NC; cousins, Linda Delaney Martin and Raymond H. “Buddy” Delaney Jr. of Columbia, SC.

Cothran Lewis Riddle
LEXINGTON — Services for Cothran Lewis Riddle, 93, will be held 2 p.m. Friday, November 10, 2006, at the chapel of Thompson Funeral Home of West Columbia, officiated by Rev. Steve Justice. Interment will follow in Southland Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. this evening at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Good Hope Baptist Church, 1738 Greenwood Hwy., Saluda, SC 29138 or S.C. Wildlife Federation, 2711 Middleburg Drive, Suite 101, Columbia, SC 29204.

Mr. Riddle died Tuesday, November 7, 2006. Born in Saluda County, SC, he was a son of the late William Alonzo and Arebelle Crouch Riddle. He was a member of Good Hope Baptist Church in Saluda, SC. Mr. Riddle was also a member of the Masonic Lodge, Cayce.

Survivors include: son and daughter-in-law, Cothran “Cotton” and Ann Riddle of Lexington; daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and Danny McClure of West Columbia, Melba and Bill Branch of Cayce and Jewell and Robert Hook of Lexington; sisters, Olene Dozier of Columbia and Reba Bodie of Saluda; brother, Elmer Riddle of Albany, GA; 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Mr. Riddle was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby “Mack” Riddle.

Dorothy F. Baxter
SANTEE — Mrs. Dorothy Fulghum Baxter, 72, of Bradford Village, Santee, died Tuesday, November 7, 2006, in a Columbia hospital.

A memorial service will be held 5 p.m. Saturday, November 18, 2006, at Santee Presbyterian Church with Rev. John Doubles officiating. Burial will be later in Gainesville, Florida.

Mrs. Baxter was born August 7, 1934, in Gainesville, Fla., a daughter of the late Ralph and Helen Fulghum. She earned a Bachelors degree from the University of Georgia in 1954, and a Masters degree in Child Development from the University of Tennessee in 1962. She traveled the country and the globe as a devoted military wife and mother. After retiring she moved to Bradford Village in Santee in 1986, where she was a charter member of Santee Presbyterian Church and served as Chairwoman of the Santee Election Committee for several years.

Surviving are her loving husband of 44 years, Wayne Baxter of the home; son, CDR Dwayne Baxter of Fairfax, VA; daughter, Diane Beard of Wake Forest, NC; sister, Sandra Howland of Oakville, Ontario; and five loving grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Santee Presbyterian Church, PO Box 649, Santee, SC 29142 or the American Heart Association, PO Box 6604, Columbia, SC 29260.

Avinger Funeral Home of Holly Hill is assisting the family.

Mrs. Loretta S. Hill

RIDGEVILLE – Mrs. Loretta Singletary Hill, 82, of the Sandridge Community, widow of Clarence H. Hill, Sr., died Monday, October 1, 2007 in a North Charleston hospital.

A memorial service will be held at 11 o’clock Thursday in the Sandridge Baptist Church with Rev. Danny Meetze officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may call at AVINGER FUNERAL HOME, HOLLY HILL, from 6 to 8 o’clock this Wednesday evening.

Mrs. Hill was born in Berkeley County a daughter of the late James M. Singletary and Blanche Hart Singletary. She was a graduate of Cross High School and a member of Sandridge Baptist Church. Loretta was a devoted wife and mother who spent the happiest days of her life working side by side with her husband on their family farm.

She was preceded in death by brothers, Andrew and James “Buck” Singletary; and a sister, Wilma Smoak.

Surviving are a son, C.H. (Gail) Hill, Jr. of Ridgeville; daughters, Alice (Robert) Myers and Lana (Lew) Conn, both of Ridgeville; sisters, Meverline Robinson of Summerton, June Bletsch and Jewell Varner, both of Ridgeville; grandchildren, Todd C. Hill, Jennifer (Alex) Myers, Chad (Tiffany) Schmidt, Corey Conn, Kelley (Wes) Jones, Dana Myers, and Whitney Myers; and a great-granddaughter, Abigail Elizabeth Jones.

Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Sandridge Baptist Church, 5286 State Road, Holly Hill, SC 29059.

David T. Mills

HOLLY HILL – David Thomas Mills, 27, of Carolina Ave., Holly Hill, died Tuesday, October 9, 2007, in the Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, October 12, in the Avinger Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Cooper Stonestreet, the Rev. Paul Hamilton, and the Rev. Albert Cox officiating. Burial will be in the Holly Hill Cemetery.

David was born in Charleston County, a son of Linda Mills Boillard; he was the adopted son of Robert E. Mills and Polly Jean Hutto Mills. He was a member of the Holly Hill United Methodist Church, a 2000 graduate of Holly Hill-Roberts High School, where he was a member of the Junior ROTC.

Survivors include his birth mother of Summerville; his adopted brother of the home; family members, Donald Boillard, Jennifer Boillard, Donald Boillard Jr., Steve Mills, and Jerry Mills, all of Summerville, Robert E. "Rocky" Mills Jr. and Terry Lynn Mills, both of Holly Hill. A special friend and mentor, Maj. Kenneth Dodd.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. this Thursday.

John E. Pindell

Mr. John E. Pindell
SANTEE, SC – Mr. John E. Pindell, 78, of Santee, SC, husband of Mary Pindell, died Thursday, October 18, 2007.

Services will be private.

Mr. Pindell was born in Baltimore, MD a son of John T. Pindell and Helen King Pindell. He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War, and was a retired supervisor from Eastmet Corporation. Mr. Pindell and his wife resided in Perryhall, MD before retiring to Santee in 1987.

Surviving are his wife of Santee; a daughter, Carol L. Gonzalez of Anniston, AL; and a son, John J. Pindell of Santee; a brother, Kenneth Pindell and a sister, Muriel Sova, both of Essex, MD; grandchildren, Kevin Gonzalez of Anniston, AL and Brittnee R. Hooper of Columbiana, OH; and a great-grandson, Austin T. Hooper of Columbiana, OH.

Memorials may be made to Alzheimer’s Association, 2999 Sunset Blvd-Ste 102, West Columbia, SC 29169.

Jimmy D. Murrow

EUTAWVILLE – QMC Jimmy D. Murrow, US Navy retired, age 70, widower of Margaret Infinger Murrow, died Saturday, October 20, 2007 in a Charleston hospital.

Funeral services will be 2 o’clock Tuesday at the First Baptist Church, Eutawville, with Rev. Mike Thompson, Rev. Donnie Blake and Rev. Tommy Wolpert officiating. Burial with military rites will be in the Eutawville Cemetery.

QMC Murrow was born in Horry County, SC, the son of Barney O. Murrow and Rhodie Capps Murrow. A member of First Baptist Church, Eutawville, he was retired after 32 years from the US Navy having served on the following ships: USS Saipan, USS Saratoga, USS Monrovia, USS Krishna, USS Tallahatchie County, USS Barnstable County, USS Nimitz, and USS Nicholas. He was preceded in death by a son, Wayne Murrow.

Surviving are a son, Danny Ray (Jeanine) Murrow and children, Jeremy, Zachary, Tiffany, Timothy, and Erik, all of Holly Hill; daughters, Sharon Marshall of Charleston, and Tammy (Johnny) Weatherford and children, Kayce, Jantzen, JoJo, and Rebekah, all of Eutawville; two additional grandchildren, Dusty Hyatt and Devan Murrow; and great-grandchildren, Bailey and Coral; brother, W. M. Murrow of Charleston; and sisters, Captola Capps of Black Mountain, NC, and Daisy Matthews of Johnsonville, SC.

Friends may call at Avinger Funeral Home from 6 to 8 pm this Monday evening.

Mrs. Ruth G. Shuler

SANTEE – Mrs. Ruth Griffin Shuler, 75, of the Providence Community, wife of Ted Shuler, died Sunday, October 21, 2007 at the MUSC Hospital in Charleston.

The funeral will be 4 o’clock Tuesday at the Providence United Methodist Church with Rev. Karen E. Starr officiating. Burial will follow in the Island Cemetery.

Mrs. Shuler was born October 23, 1931 in Vance, a daughter of the late Hobson Griffin and Tiny Felkel Griffin. She was a graduate of Providence High School and was co-owner of Elloree Builders Supply. An active member of Providence United Methodist Church, she was a Sunday School Teacher and belonged to the Maria Wightman Circle of the UMW.

Mrs. Shuler was completely dedicated to her family and community, and was an avid supporter of Holly Hill Academy Athletics.

Surviving are her husband of the home; sons, Howard (Gwen) Shuler, Michael (Cindy) Shuler, Otis (Kim) Shuler, and Dahl (Karen) Shuler, all of the Providence Community; a brother, Herman Griffin of Santee; grandchildren, Nicole (Rob) Sheffield of Laurens, Candice (Trey) McGriff, Kristen Shuler, Corey Shuler, Ashley Shuler, Sara Shuler, James Shuler, all of the Providence Community; great-grandchildren, Brian Sheffield and Mason McGriff, and a long-time family friend, Leon Steward.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 o’clock Monday at the Providence United Methodist Church.

Memorials may be made to Holly Hill Academy Athletics, PO Box 757, Holly Hill, SC 29059 or to a charity of choice.

Mr. J. E. Shuler, Jr.

HOLLY HILL – Mr. John Ebbie “J.E.” Shuler, Jr., 74, of the Providence Community, Holly Hill, SC, died Wednesday, October 24, 2007 at The Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg.

The funeral will be 3 o’clock Friday at Providence United Methodist Church with Rev. Karen E. Starr officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Mr. Shuler was born August 10, 1933 a son of the late John Ebbie Shuler and Kathleen Whetsell Shuler. He graduated from Providence High School, an Army veteran, and a member of Providence United Methodist Church. He was a farmer, a former employee of Greenwood Mills, and an avid gardener.

He was predeceased by an aunt, Myrtle Shuler and an uncle Sam Shuler, in whose home he grew up. He was also predeceased by a brother, Rev. Doctor Claude M. Shuler.

Surviving are a brother, James Vernon (Claudia) Shuler of Holly Hill; sisters, Agnes S. (Cyrus) Shealy of Spartanburg and Dorothy S. (Frederick) Dantzler of Holly Hill; sister-in-law, Tommie G. Shuler of West Columbia; cousins, Mary Ann Shuler, Gayle and Leon West, and other cousins, nieces, nephews and many friends.

Friends may call at Avinger Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. this Thursday.
