Roy Lee Martin

EUTAWVILLE – Roy Lee Martin, 47, of Eutawville, died Sunday, January 6, 2008 at The Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at Avinger Funeral Home in Holly Hill with Rev. George “Buck” Reeves officiating. Burial will follow in the Eutawville Cemetery.

Roy was born in Berkeley County a son of Jannie Weatherford Martin and the late Sidney Leon Martin. He was a heating and air conditioning mechanic. Roy enjoyed fishing, music and playing his guitar. He was preceded in death by a sister, Betty M. Mudgett.

Surviving are his mother of Eutawville; sisters, Irene (Jim) Ziegler and Annie (Dickie) Atkinson of Charleston, and Lorene (Donald) Weatherford of Eutawville; brothers, Leon Martin and Walter “Deedle” (Debbie) Martin of Holly Hill, Jimmy (Donna) Martin of Ridgeville, and Levi Martin of Eutawville; an uncle, Julius Weatherford of Eutawville; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the Martin home on Red Bank Road in Eutawville.

Charles V. "Bim" Smith
09/12/1928 - 1/7/2008

HOLLY HILL – Charles Virgil “Bim” Smith, 79, of Holly Hill, died Monday, January 7, 2008 at his home.

Funeral services will be 2 o’clock Thursday at Avinger Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Buddy Locke and Rev. Andy Burk officiating. Burial will follow in the Holly Hill Cemetery.

A native of Holly Hill, Mr. Smith was a son of the late Tommy Hampton Smith and Eliza Stoudemire Smith. He was a graduate of Holly Hill High School, an Army veteran of the Korean War, and a retired farmer. He was a member of Corinth Baptist Church where he was a member of the Men’s Sunday School Class.

Surviving are his wife, Sylvia Collier Smith of the home; a daughter, Susan S. Carnes of Holly Hill; a son, Dennis (Cindy) Smith of Murrells Inlet; a sister, Reba Caparella of West Palm Beach, Fla.; a brother, Jerry D. (Margaret) Smith of Holly Hill; and grandsons, David (Laura Ashley) Carnes of Mount Pleasant and Greg and Grant Smith of Murrells Inlet.

Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. this Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Holly Hill Cemetery Fund, PO Box 203, Holly Hill, SC 29059.

J. Murray Breland, Jr.
09/22/1919 - 1/12/2008

HOLLY HILL – Rev. Jacob Murray Breland, Jr., 88, of Holly Hill, husband of Ellen Knott Breland, died Saturday, January 12, 2008 at his residence.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church in Harleyville with Rev. Terry Hiers officiating. Burial will follow in the Holly Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Thomas Breland, Coleman Breland, David Breland, Walter Dantzler, Jim Russell, and Jerry Gardner.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of The American Legion Post 128, Harleyville.

Rev. Breland was born September 22, 1919 in Holly Hill, a son of the late Jacob Murray Breland and Mary Welch Breland. He was a graduate of Holly Hill High School and an Army veteran of World War II. He was an active member of The American Legion Post 128, Harleyville, and an active member of First Baptist Church in Harleyville.

He served the Lord and his community in various capacities as a former Sunday School Director, Teacher and Deacon of the First Baptist Church in Holly Hill, and as a Boy Scout Leader for many years. Rev. Breland was a retired Southern Baptist Minister, retired rural mail carrier for the US Post Service, and retired owner of Breland’s Small Engine Service. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Christie, and two sisters, Miriam Hildreth of Oak Ridge, TN and Betty Dantzler of Holly Hill.

Surviving are his wife of the home; are two sons, Neil (Barbara) Breland of North Augusta, and Harvey (Roxanne) Breland of Greenville; a daughter, Elaine Breland of Wilmington, DE; six step-children, Jason Allen of Orangeburg, Stephanie Helmick of Columbia, Barbara Siau of Fayetteville, NC, Marie Jackson, Sandra Mills, and Wanda Jackson all of Summerville; two brothers, Dr. Arthur Breece (Joyce) Breland of Charlotte, NC and Glen Marion (Carolyn) Breland of Lancaster; a sister, Vernon B. “Punky” Russell of Holly Hill; and six grandchildren, Marshal Breece, Rollins, Jessica and Sabre Breland, Sherry Freeman, and Ellen Breland.

Friends may call at Avinger Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. this Monday evening.

Carolyn Driggers Allen
BARNWELL — Carolyn Driggers Allen, 72, died Tuesday, November 7, 2006, in The St. Joseph Hospital, Augusta, Ga.

Mrs. Allen, a daughter of the late Winston and Elizabeth Tunstall Driggers, was born in Lake City, SC. She was a member of Mount Olivet Baptist Church.

A homegoing service will be held at Mount Olivet Baptist Church, Highway 300, Barnwell, SC, Friday, November 10, 2006, at 2 p.m. with Rev. George Johnson officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Thursday evening at Mole Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mount Olivet Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 1364, Barnwell, SC.

Mrs. Allen is survived by her husband, Charles Park “C.P.” Allen of the home; daughter, Lisa (Greg) Lydick of Columbia, SC; son, Tommy (Sherry) Allen of Rowesville, SC; grandchildren, Brad, Justin and Summer Allen, Jennifer and Mathew Lydick, Derrick Searson; sisters, Shirley (Alan) Barnett of Simpsonville, SC, Claudia (Bob) Hayes of Aiken, SC, and Stelva (George Lee) Webb of Barnwell, SC.

Frances Rhoad Jennings
BRANCHVILLE — Frances Rhoad Jennings, age 72, of 6960 Farrells Road, Branchville, SC, widow of Leland Henry Jennings Sr., died November 7, 2006, in The Regional Medical Center, Orangeburg, SC.

Born December 3, 1933, to the late Ned Byrd Rhoad and the late Eva Weeks Rhoad, she was a member of Zion United Methodist Church, Branchville, SC. She attended Lander College in Greenwood, SC, where she received her associate degree. She was a secretary for Bamberg High School for many years. She was an administrative assistant for Bamberg Job Corp and the S.C. Correction System until she retired. She also served on the Bamberg County Hospital Board for many years.

She loved cross-stitching and was a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxilliary. She played the piano for Zion United Methodist Church and Hunters Chapel Baptist Church. She also wrote a column for The Advertizer-Herald, ‘The Rhoad Runner,” Community News for Hunters Chapel.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, November 11, 2006, at 11 a.m. at Zion United Methodist Church with Rev. Charles Bradley and Rev. Chris King officiating. Burial to follow in the church cemetery.

Survivors include three sons, Leland H. Jennings Jr. and his wife, Sue, of Branchville, SC, Wilmont B. “Monty” Jennings and wife, Brandy, of Murfreesboro, TN, and Dean Jennings of Hannahan, SC; four grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Friday, November 10, 2006, from 5-7 p.m. at Cooner Funeral Home Chapel. Memorials may be made to Zion United Methodist Church in Care of Richard Rentz, 5939 Farrells Road, Branchville, SC 29432 or to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210.

Cooner Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Terry L. Tuten
CORDESVILLE — Services with burial for Terry Lee Tuten, 47, are 2 p.m. Friday at Pioneer Pentecostal Holiness Church. Visitation 5-7 today at Dial-Murray Funeral Home, Moncks Corner. Born in Moncks Corner to Edgar and Mary Tuten, he died Nov. 6, 2006. Surviving: wife, Eline; son, Terry II; grandson, Travis Dangerfield II; mother; siblings, Thomas, Peggy, Eddie, James, Billy, Kenneth Tuten, Lawanda Nix.

Eloise Simmons
SUMTER — Eloise B. Simmons, 87, widow of Charles Simmons, died Nov. 6, 2006. Born in Winnsboro to James and Alethia Porter Bennett, she was a schoolteacher and principal, retiring from Crosswell School. Surviving is her son, James Simmons. A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Nov. 14, 2006, at The Church of the Holy Comforter, where she was a devoted member. Bullock Funeral Home is in charge.

Maree Sineath Shuler
COLUMBIA — A graveside service for Maree Sineath Shuler, 90, will be held 11 a.m. Friday in Greenlawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family graciously requests memorial contributions be made in her memory to First Baptist Church of Columbia, P.O. Box 1000 Columbia, SC 29202. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.

Mrs. Shuler, wife of the late Glenn Wise Shuler, died Tuesday, November 7, 2006. Born in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Farley Rivers Sineath and Mabel Windham Sineath. A longtime member of First Baptist Church of Columbia, she taught their “Young Marrieds” Sunday School for more than 20 years and was a member of the Mary Martha Sunday School Class. In her youth, Maree was the charter member of the Les Coquettes Club at Columbia High School. She worked for many years as the business manager at Ethan Allen and enjoyed playing bridge.

She is survived by her son, Farley S. Shuler and his wife, Candy Crane Shuler, of Greenville, a granddaughter, Garland Shuler Fisher and her husband, Drew Fisher, of Greenville, two stepgrandsons, Drew Droege of Los Angeles, Calif., and Garrett Droege and his wife, Abbey, of Wrightsville Beach, N.C., four great-grandchildren, Carter Ivester, Rivers Ivester, Britany Fisher and Sydney Fisher as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her son, Glenn Wise “Sonny” Shuler Jr., a daughter-in-law, Lynn Hoots Shuler, a sister, Rosalind Sineath Hough and a brother, Farley Rivers Sineath Jr.

Bill T. Rea Sr.
WEST COLUMBIA — Services for William “Bill” Thomas Rea Sr., 75, will be held 11 a.m. Friday, November 10, 2006, at the chapel of Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington, officiated by Dr. Steve Allen. Interment will follow in Travis Park Cemetery in Saluda, SC. The family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8:30 Thursday, November 9, 2006, at the funeral home.

Mr. Rea died Tuesday, November 7, 2006. Born in Spruce Pine, AL, he was the son of the late Willie A. Rea and Nellie Cofield Rea. Mr. Rea was a veteran of the Korean Conflict where he served as a chaplain’s assistant. He had retired from Galeana Chrysler Co. Mr. Rea played and sang music since the age of nine and was a member of WIS-TV, Snuffy Jenkins and the Hired Hands where he played lead guitar and sang tenor since 1954. In the 70s he played bass guitar for the Saints Quartet. Mr. Rea was a member of the First PHC of Saluda.

Surviving are his wife, Lillie Kitchings Rea of West Columbia; daughter, Felicia Renee Rea Evans of West Columbia; sons, William “Billy” Thomas Rea Jr. of Lexington, James Timothy Rea of Lexington, Lee Tracy Rea of West Columbia; sister, Eunice Wright of West Columbia; brother, Roy G. Rea of Cartersville, GA; six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Thelma Ruth Brown
UNION — Miss Thelma Ruth Brown, 79, died Wednesday, November 8, 2006, in Wallace Thomas Hospital.

Survivors are five sisters, Margaret B. Coward and Mary Lee Parks, both of Union, Augustine B. Crocker of Greenwood, Peggy B. Willard of Gaston and Brenda Brown of Cayce and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, November 10, 2006, at New Life Baptist Church. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. tonight at S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to New Life Baptist Chruch, 502 Meansville Road, Union, SC 29379.

John Langford
SALUDA — John Heber Langford, 81, of 433 N. Main St., died Tuesday, November 7, 2006.

Born in Saluda County, a son of the late Heber Shuler and Oneita Crouch Langford, he was the husband of Ruth Porter Langford. He was a retired merchant marine, having served 23 years, and a member of the National Maritime Union. Mr. Langford was owner and operator of The Saluda Motel & Restaurant. He was a Mason and a member of Travis Masonic Lodge #241, a member of the American Legion Post #65 and a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Ruth Porter Langford, a daughter, Debra Langford Rhoden of Saluda, six grandchildren, Angie Langford Walker, Abby Langford, Andrew Langford, Ashton Langford, Jonathan Pridmore and Michael Pridmore, five great-grandchildren and a brother, Wayne Langford of Batesburg.

A son, John Wayne Langford, a brother, Ralph Langford, and two sisters, Dorothy Herlong and Floride Rhinehart, preceded Mr. Langford in death.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, November 9, 2006, at St. Paul United Methodist Church with Dr. Tom Norrell officiating. Interment will follow in Travis Park Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to St. Paul United Methodist Church, 102 East Butler Ave., Saluda, SC 29138.
