Ex-mayor ‘Bubba’ dies at 78

Former Sumter Mayor W.A. McElveen, known as “Mayor Bubba,” has died. He was 78.

W.A. McElveen died Thursday evening following heart surgery Wednesday, his son Wilson McElveen said.

McElveen presided over the town from 1980 to 1988, and was a City Council member the eight years prior to his election, Wilson McElveen said.

“Sumter was a part of him,” McElveen said about his father. “When you think about Sumter, you think about Bubba McElveen, Sumter’s greatest ambassador.”

McElveen graduated from Sumter High School in 1945 and from The Citadel in 1948. A U.S. Air Force veteran, McElveen served in the Korean War. He was the former owner and operator of McElveen Pontiac GMC.

The former mayor kept in touch with thousands of town residents and acquaintances around the world with a weekly newsletter that originally was written for his son and daughters in college. It was a roundup of what was going on in Sumter, including news about anyone who, as Bubba McElveen put it, “had been promoted to glory.”

He always ended the messages with an inspirational thought and signed them “Love from 208,” a reference to his house number growing up.

Wilson McElveen said his father had not finished Saturday’s edition at the time of his death.

In addition to Wilson McElveen, who lives in Columbia, Bubba McElveen is survived by his wife, Barbara Moore McElveen, and two daughters, Nancy Hanson, and Virginia McFaddin, both of Sumter.

His funeral will be held Sunday at the First Presbyterian Church in Sumter, the Elmore-Hill-MCreight Funeral Home said Friday. Burial will be in the Tirzah Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Dalzell.

Mr. McElveen was a member of First Presbyterian Church where he served as a deacon and an elder. He was a 1945 graduate of Sumter High School and a 1948 graduate of The Citadel. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran and served in the Korean War. He was the former owner and operator of McElveen Pontiac GMC. He was a former president of the Sumter Elks Club, former board member of the YMCA, former board member of The Salvation Army, former board member of the South Carolina State Municipal Association, former board member of the South Carolina State Museum, former member of the Sumter-Shaw Community Council, former member of the Sumter City-County Liaison Board, former member of the Sumter County Development Board, former member of the Tuomey Hospital Board of Trustees, former member of the Safe Federal Credit Union Board, former member of the South Carolina Automobile Dealers Association and former board member of the Sumter County Planning Commission. He was a former member of Sumter City Council for eight years and a former Mayor of Sumter for eight years.

He was currently a member of the Sumter County Museum Board, a member of the Sumter County Genealogical Society, a member of the Sumter Historical Society, a member of the Mount Vernon Coffee Club and the Fortnightly Club. He was a member of American Legion Post #15. Awarded the Silver Crescent by Governor Mark Sanford in 2003, he was recently awarded the Citizen of the Community award by Mayor Joe McElveen. He was the first civilian to be named an honorary U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sergeant. He was the author of two books about Sumter County, the proprietor of Bubba Archives, hosted a local radio program and was a featured history columnist for The Item. “Mayor Bubba” was widely known through his weekly e-mail newsletter, Love From 208, which was received by approximately 2,000 individuals and will be greatly missed by many.

Mr. McElveen was honored by having two blocks of Bartlette Street named in his honor where his former automobile dealership was located.

Surviving are his wife of Sumter; two daughters, Nancy M. Hanson and husband, Bush, Virginia M. McFaddin and husband, Henry, all of Sumter; a son, Wilson A McElveen III and wife, Sharon, of Columbia; six grandchildren, Barbara Reese McFaddin, Caroline Adele McFaddin, Patricia Leigh Hanson, Richard Mallory Hanson, Caroline Aimar McElveen and Peyton Shuman McElveen. Pallbearers will be Dr. Henry Moses, Lathan Roddey, Mike Watson, Dickie Jones, Graham Osteen and Coles Dwight.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Mt. Vernon Coffee Club and the Fortnightly Club and his grandson, Richard Mallory Hanson.
