COLUMBIA — Homegoing Service for Lottie Thompson Javis of Columbia will be held 3 p.m. Saturday at Zion Pilgrim Baptist Church in Richtex with burial to follow in the church cemetery.

Bostick-Tompkins Funeral Home, 2930 Colonial Drive, is in charge.

Mrs. Javis died Jan. 24, 2007. Born in Columbia, she was a daughter of the late Wesley and Cora Cannon Thompson, the widower of Eddie “Coot” Javis and a member of Zion Pilgrim Baptist Church.

Surviving are her daughter, Alice (Theodore) Green; grandchildren, Gail, Sandra, Ramona, Jacqueline, Theodosia, Gerald and Alexis; 22 great-grandchildren; siblings, Henry and Elijah Thompson, Maggie Alleyne and Corine Burke.

Neter Pearl Newton
STUART, Fla. — Services with burialfor Neter Pearl Newton, formerly of Brunson, S.C., are noon Saturday at Greater Cherry Grove Christian Church. Wake: 6-8 p.m. Friday at Riley’s Funeral Home, Hampton, S.C. Mrs. Newton died Jan. 16, 2007. Surviving: children, Raymond, Vannie, Calvin Sr., John Henry, Horace, Alfreda Newton, Glorris Murphy; brother, John Newton; grandchildren; great-grandchildren.

Samuel P. Haddix
LUGOFF — Funeral service for Samuel Paul “Sam” Haddix, 81, will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Powers Funeral Home with burial to follow in Hardshell Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Springdale Health Care Center.

Mr. Haddix died Wednesday, January 24, 2007. Born in Middletown, Ohio, he was the son of the late Kelly and Ethel Cassidy Haddix. He retired from GE as an engineer. An avid golfer, he was a member of Becket Ridge Country Club in West Chester, Ohio. He attended The River Church and enjoyed gardening and cooking.

He is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Paul Brent and Kathy Haddix of Franklin, Tenn., and Michael Allen and Ruth Haddix of Beaver Creek, Ohio; daughter and son-in-law, Laura Michelle and Kenneth Robert Glenn; grandchildren, Kari Neff, Samantha Haddix, Joseph Haddix, Peter Haddix, James Haddix and Kyle Glenn.

John Derren “J.D.” Crumpton
PROSPERITY — John Derren “J.D.” Crumpton, 82, died January 23, 2007. Visitation will be Friday from 6 p.m.-7:30 p.m. at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to Bachman Lutheran Church, 3124 Bachman Chapel Road, Prosperity, SC 29127 or Odyssey Health Care, 200 Center Point Circle, Suite 170, Columbia, SC 29210.

Born in Pomaria, Mr. Crumpton was a son of the late John R. and Ruby Wicker Crumpton. He was a member of Bachman Chapel Lutheran Church where he was a former councilman. In 1994, he was awarded an Honorary Life Membership to the Bachman Chapel Lutheran Men in Mission where he was recognized for his faithful service to God and his church by regular attendance and ringing the church bell every Sunday. He was also a past church treasurer. Mr. Crumpton was a member of the Woodmen of the World and an Army veteran of World War II. He had retired after 29 years from the S.C. Department of Highways where he received Employee of the Year in 1987.

Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Kathleen Kinard Crumpton; daughter, Dianne C. (James Earl) Morris of Prosperity; a son, Richard (Sheila L.) Crumpton of Prosperity; a brother, David (Evelyn) Crumpton of Newberry; a sister, Pauline Koon of Newberry; grandchildren, Michael (Kelly) Morris, Andy (Sally) Crumpton, and Michelle (Mike) Hawkinson; great-grandchildren, Ivy Crumpton, Alexis and Amber Hawkinson, Dillon and Dalton Morris. He was predeceased by a brother and two sisters.

Wilkins L. Broadway
SUMTER — Wilkins Lawrence Broadway, 92, husband of Agnes Broadway, died Wednesday, January 24, 2007, in Tuomey Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.

Born October 19, 1914, in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Benjamin Lewis and Mary Alice “Molly” Bradham Broadway.

Mr. Broadway was a lifelong member of Grace Baptist Church and an avid gardener. He had retired from Korn Industries.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Elsie Broadway; one son, William Broadway; one stepson, Edward Gainey; three brothers, Kizer, Luther and Marion Broadway; three sisters, Leona Broadway, Mary Lou Foster and Thelma Dove; a granddaughter, Kim Allen; and a grandson, Gary Broadway.

Surviving are his wife of Sumter; two sons, James Broadway of Sumter and Robert Broadway of Chino, Calif.; one daughter, Charlotte Hill of Sumter; one stepson, Jimmy Gainey of Sumter; two stepdaughters, Ann McDaniel of Sumter and Kathy Rutledge of Archbald, Pennsylvania ; 15 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at the chapel of Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. James Chandler officiating.

Burial will be in Sumter Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Martin Broadway, Steve Broadway, Zannie Broadway, Ken Coker, Larry Hill and Donald Derrick.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Senior Adult Sunday School Class.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday at Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home, 941 Grimble Court.

Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory, 221 Broad St., Sumter, is in charge of the arrangements.

W. Edward Ogburn
CAMDEN — A service to celebrate the life of Walter Edward Ogburn will be held at First Baptist Church of Camden Friday, January 26, 2007, at 2 p.m. with burial to follow in Quaker Cemetery. Rev. Bruce Hancock will officiate. Memorials may be made to the S.C. Autism Society, 652 Bush River Road, Columbia, SC 29210.

Mr. Ogburn died Wednesday, January 24, 2007. Born September 7, 1923, in Camden, he was the son of the late Will S. and Lottie Hornsby Ogburn He attended the College of Charleston and the University of S.C. Law School. Mr. Ogburn was married for 52 ½ years to the love of his life, Williene West Ogburn. They had one son, W. Edward Ogburn (little Eddie) who died with leukemia when he was 22 months old. He was the father of Henry DuRant and William Nelson DuRant. He had retired as the Kershaw County Clerk of Court after 37 years of service, having been elected to this office as the youngest Clerk of Court at 23 years of age. Mr. Ogburn was a member of First Baptist Church of Camden, having taught Sunday school for a number of years, American Legion Post 17, the VFW, and the Masonic order. He was also a life member of U.S.C. Alumni Association and Kershaw County Historical Society and a former member of the Golden K and Camden Country Club. Ed served in the European Theatre, 2nd World War, having received the Bronze Star and Combat Infantry Badge and two campaign stars. His main purpose in life was helping others. His wife once said that Ed had helped more churches throughout the county erect more steps than any other man. He was a devoted husband and father.

Surviving are his wife, Williene West Ogburn, sons, Henry DuRant and W. Nelson Durant, five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by brothers, W. Douglas Ogburn and Samuel H. Ogburn.

Serving as active pallbearers are Will DuRant, Chas DuRant, Hill DuRant, Brandon Moore, Bill Wooten, Ricky Ogburn and Mike Ogburn. Serving as honorary pallbearers are members of the 40 & 8, VFW, American Legion and the Jerry Toms Sunday School Class.

Kornegay Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

JoAnn George
RUBY — JoAnn George, 58, died Sunday, January 21, 2007. Born in Little River, SC,she was a daughter of the late Harvey and Dessie Matee Elliott Nealy. She was the loving wife and caregiver for her husband of 43 years, Richard George Sr.

Surviving are her husband of Ruby, SC, a son, Richard George Jr. of Ellerbe, NC, daughters, Denise (Dan) Lewis of Clio, SC, Debbie (John Callanhan) Drake of Monroe, NC, sisters, Irene Covington of Hampton Rhodes, VA, Earline (Johnny) Jones of Myrtle Beach, SC, nd nine grandchildren.

The family will receive friends 2 p.m. Friday, January 26, 2007, at Kiser Funeral Home, Cheraw, SC. A service will be held at 3 p.m. following the visitation. Burial will be in Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens.

Ida Graham
LAKE CITY — Services for Ida Sue Graham, 89, widow of Leroy Graham, 2:30 p.m. Saturday: Nettie’s Temple Holiness Church. Burial: Beaverdam Cemetery, Green’s F.H. in charge. Born in Florence Co. to Earl & Annie Graham Lee, she died Jan. 22, 2007. Surviving: siblings, Roland, Eloise Lee; children, Nettie McKinney, Verlie Brown, Verna Nesbitt, Gertrude Reed, Robert, Joseph, Early, Leroy, Sandy Graham.

Jimmy Bullard
MULLINS — Mr. Jimmy Bullard, 63, husband of Carolyn Rogers Bullard, died Wednesday, January 24, 2007, in Marion County Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, January 27, at the chapel of Cox-Collins Funeral Home with the Rev. Ron Bentley and the Rev. Bruce Sayre officiating. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery, directed by Cox-Collins Funeral Home.

Jimmy was born July 16, 1943, in Mullins, a son of the late James Alton Bullard and the late Retha Bell Sanderson Bullard. He attended the Fair Bluff, N.C., schools. He continued his education in the U.S. Air Force, where he received an honorable discharge as a sergeant in 1968. Jimmy was certified for postal work, a certified civil engineer, a certified heavy equipment operator and a certified mine inspector. He was a supervisor for E.P. Pitts Sand Co. in Nichols, the oldest manufacturing company in Horry County until it went out of business. He was a member of the VFW. Jimmy was of the Methodist faith.

Surviving Jimmy in addition to his wife of the home are a son, James Scott Bullard of Mullins; two stepsons, Jack L. Strickland Jr. of Germany and Daniel H. Strickland of Mullins; grandchild, Memphis Ryder Bullard; two stepgrandchildren, James Michael Strickland and Joseph Allen Strickland; four brothers, James R. Bullard and his wife, Edna, of Fair Bluff, N.C., Henry S. Bullard and his wife, Janice, of York, Charles Richard Bullard and his wife, Judy, Nichols and Joseph P. Bullard and his wife, Rachel, of Loris; a special niece, Kathy S. Floyd of Nichols; and several other nieces and nephews.

Jimmy was predeceased by a brother, George L. Bullard and sister, Evelyn B. Stanley.

Memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Visitation will be held Friday evening from 7-9 p.m. at Cox-Collins Funeral Home.

Edgar “Ed” Owens Jr.
SUMTER — Edgar Emory “Ed” Owens Jr., 71, husband of Margaret Adams Owens, died Thursday, January 25, 2007, in Palmetto Health Baptist Hospital in Columbia.

Born in Springfield, MA, he was a son of the late Edgar Emory Owens Sr. and the late Thelma Collette Owens. Mr. Owens worked with the Sumter Assessors Office. He was a member of The Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter, the Sumter County Gamecock Club and the Sumter Lions Club.

Survivors besides his wife include one son, Leverett Adams Owens and his wife, Michele, of New Bern, NC; one daughter, Mary Kathleen Owens of Columbia; two grandchildren, Leverett Owens and Walker Owens; and one sister, Jacqueline Head and her husband, Jack, of Niceville, FL.

Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Friday at The Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter with Rev. Dr. John M. Barr III and Rev. Hamilton Smith officiating.

Burial will be in Sumter Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Gardner Gore, Henry B. Richardson, Hugh Betchman, William “Bill” Noonan, Don Herlong and Lathe Harris.

The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. in Walker Hall at The Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter.

CAMDEN — Services for Jaunita Fowler, 81, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, January 27, 2007, at Red Hill Baptist Church with internment burial in the church cemetery. Cooke Funeral Home is in charge. Born to Charles Bracey and Charlotte Clinton, she passed away January 22, 2007.

Mary E. Sapp Leonard
COLUMBIA — A homegoing service for Mary E. Sapp Leonard is 3 p.m. Saturday at Bostick-Tompkins F.H., Burial: Serenity Memorial Gardens. Born in Georgia to James and Maybelle Curry Sapp, she died Jan. 17, 2007. Surviving are children, Henry Jr., Ricky, Raymond, James, Christopher, Velvet Brown, Barbara Wannamaker, Annie Fanning; stepchildren, Marie, Lois, Johnny, Willie, Charles, Clifford, Napoleon.

Col. Richard M. Lovelace
COLUMBIA — Services with military rites for Colonel Richard M. Lovelace will be held Saturday, February 3, at 11 a.m. at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral with burial in Trinity churchyard. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.

Born September, 1916, in Jacksonville, Fla., he was the son of James Sisson and Martha McCullough Lovelace. Following graduation from Robert E. Lee High School in 1934, he attended the University of Florida from which he received his undergraduate degree in 1938. Concurrently, he was commissioned a 2nd Lt. Army Field Artillery.

Following college graduation, he returned to Jacksonville to teach English and Chemistry at the Duval County Vocational School. He continued graduate studies simultaneously. From 1940 to 1941, he served as Chairman of the General Continuation Education Teachers for the State of Florida.

During World War II, he participated in four campaigns in the European theatre including France, Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany, where he served as a Field Artillery Forward Observer and Battery Commander.

Following World War II, he received a commission in the regular Army. Assignments took him and his family to Japan, Panama Canal Zone, Korea, Oklahoma, Missouri, South Carolina, Kansas, New York and Virginia. Duties ran the gamut of both command and staff assignments. He retired in 1969.

He was awarded the Legion of Merit on three occasions in diverse fields such as technical intelligence, logistics and financial management. For combat operations, he received the Bronze Star for valor in combat operations against German forces in the Battle of Hurtgen Forest.

He was a member of the Society for Mayflower Descendants in the State of South Carolina, serving both as Treasurer and Governor.

He was an active participant in the affairs of the Episcopal Church in the many communities in which he lived. He served as vestryman at St. Andrews Episcopal Church, Albany, N.Y., and Trinity Church, Columbia. While in the Panama Canal Zone, he was appointed by Bishop R. Heber Gooden to the Cathedral Chapter of Ancon Cathedral and served on the Bishop’s Council of Advice. For many years, he was active in the Kiyosoto Experiment Project, an organization of American and Japanese laymen dedicated to the development of church, general educational and agricultural activities in the Central Highlands of Japan. In 1993, Lovelace was designated President Emeritus, Men of Trinity, at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, Columbia.

He was married first to the late Margaret Blackwell Lovelace. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Vardell Lovelace; son, Richard M. Lovelace Jr. of Conway, S.C.; daughter, Harriet Lovelace Dunn of Nashville, Tenn.; and grandchildren: Blake Lovelace of Stamford, Conn., Macon Lovelace of Columbia, Andrew Dunn of Washington , D.C., and Molly Dunn of Nashville.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, 1100 Sumter Street, Columbia, SC 29201 and Tri-County Hospice Care, 166 Stoneridge Drive, Suite 100, Columbia, SC 29210.
