WEST COLUMBIA — Services for E. Inez Williams Cupstid, 85, of West Columbia, will be held at 4 pm Saturday in Laurel Baptist Church, officiated by Rev. Steve Kittrell. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Donald Smith, Jr., James Williams, Jr., Jason Williams, Brian Hinson, Clint Watts, and Timmy Williams. Honorary pallbearers will be James Harrelson, Andy Crider, Randy Oxner, Sr., Christopher Cameron, Randy Oxner, Jr., and Jason Russell. The family will receive friends from 7-9pm Friday at Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington. Memorials may be made to Laurel Baptist Church Building Fund or to Portsbridge Hospice.

Mrs. Cupstid, widow of H.R. Williams, Sr. and John S. Cupstid, died Thursday, June 17, 2004. Born in West Columbia, she was the daughter of the late Henry Mack and Elzada Axson. Mrs. Cupstid was a member of Laurel Baptist Church and Pine Ridge Women’s Club. She was an employee of W.T. Grants for over 20 years prior to its closing.

Surviving are her daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and Charlie Graham and Doris Fletcher, all of West Columbia, Debra and Laverne Brown of Pelion; sons and daughters-in-law, H.R., Jr. and Antha Williams, James H. and Miriam Williams, all of West Columbia, Donald R. and Peggy Williams of Gaston; brother, Pete Axson of Batesburg-Leesville; 13 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; and 2 great-great grandchildren.

Evelyn Eargle

PROSPERITY — Services for Evelyn Virginia Frick Eargle, 71, will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Saturday at Grace Lutheran Church. Interment will follow in Prosperity Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 6:30 until 8:00 PM at the McSwain-Evans Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Grace Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 188, Prosperity, or to Newberry Dialysis Center, 2041 Medical Park Drive, Newberry.

Mrs. Eargle, widow of Perry “Pete” Eargle, died June 17, 2004. Born in Newberry, she was a daughter of the late Enos Marvin and Edna Viola Sligh Frick. She was a retired secretary for Metal Masters, and was a member of Grace Lutheran Church where she was a former Superintendent of Sunday School.

Mrs. Eargle is survived by two sons: Perry M. Eargle of Macon, GA, and Gregg F. Eargle of Tampa, FL; a daughter; Cheryl E. Mills of Saluda, and 5 grandchildren; Brantley Eargle, Julia Eargle, Grant Eargle, K.D. Smith, and De’Tron Smith.

Mildred Long

COLUMBIA — Memorial service for Mildred B. Long, 82, of the Presbyterian Home, will be held Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at the Presbyterian Home with visitation following the service. Burial will be private. Memorials may be made to the Presbyterian Home, 700 Davega Drive, Lexington, S.C. or to the Alzheimer’s Association, Palmetto Chapter, P.O. Box 7044, Columbia, SC 29202. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is in charge.

Mrs. Long, wife of the late Glenn O. Long, died Thursday, June 17, 2004. Born in Waterloo, Illinois, she was a daughter of the late Rev. Gustav and Bertha Brink. A former resident of Stepp Drive and Veterans Road, she was a homemaker and avid bridge player. She was a longtime member of Shandon Presbyterian Church and a charter member of The Cosmopolitan Club of Columbia.

Surviving are son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Lucinda Long of Hixson, Tenn.; daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Jack Culler of Lexington; and grandchildren, Jeff Culler and his wife, Elizabeth, of Atlanta, Ga., Jenny Culler of Athens, Ga., Riley Long and Frazier Long of Hixson Tenn. She was predeceased by her sister, Ruth Thorp and brothers, Fred and David Brink.

Georgia Garey

RIDGEWAY — Services and burial for Georgia R. Garey, son of Willie and Rhoda Belton Robertson, will be held at 6 tonight at Macedonia Baptist Church. Surviving are sons, James Robertson, David Robertson; one grandson, four granddaughters.

Ellen Miller

PORT ROYAL — Services for Ellen Miller, 84, are 11 a.m. Saturday at Union Baptist Church with burial in Beaufort Memorial Gardens, Beaufort; wake services 7-8 tonight at Marshel’s Wright-Donaldson Home for Funerals, Beaufort. Born in Port Royal to Minnie and Smoka Miller, she died June 14, 2004. Surviving: sisters, Lillie Miller, Marguerite Hamilton; adopted children, Henry Robinson, Agnes Myers.

Cellis Gunter

RED BANK — Mr. Cellis Elliott Gunter, 76, entered into rest Wednesday, June 16th, 2004.

Mr. Gunter was born in Wagener. He was the son of the late Kit G. and Mattie Hall Gunter. He was preceded in death by four brothers and four sisters. Mr. Gunter was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in the Korean Conflict.

Mr. Gunter is survived by a sister Susie Cooper of Perry, special friend Eddie Clark of West Columbia and care givers Richard and Tiffany Johnson of Lexington.

Graveside service will be held at 11:00 a. m. Friday, June 18th at the Bethcar Baptist Church Cemetery. Blizzard Funeral Home, 153 South Main St., Wagener (803) 564-5333 is in charge of arrangements.

Francina Johnson

COLUMBIA — Graveside services for Mrs. Francina Robertson Johnson, of 1628 Waverly St., Columbia, S.C., will be held on Friday, June 18, 2004 in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Garners Ferry Rd., Columbia, S.C. at 3:00 P.M. with the Rev. Blakely Scott officiating. Visitation will be graveside one hour prior to the services.

Mrs. Francina Robertson Johnson was born on October 8, 1926 in Columbia, S.C. to the late Hattie Treadwell and Henry Robertson and departed this life on June 16, 2004. She was married to the late Leon Edward Johnson and to this union one daughter and one son were born. She attended the public schools of Columbia, S.C., graduating from Booker T. Washington High School. She did further studies, trained and graduated from the Good Samaritan Waverly School of Nurses, The United States Cadet Nursing Program, The Medical University of Virginia at Richmond an affiliate with the Good Samaritan Waverly School of Nurses. She was a member of First Nazareth Baptist Church, a former Advisor of The Nurses Guild, former President of The Vineyard Workers Club, a member and a Recipient of Medical Area of The National Council of Negro Women, Columbia, S.C. Chapter, and also organized The Yearly Church Christmas Dinner.

She is survived by her loving daughter, Gwendolyn Johnson, Columbia, S.C.; one son, Leon Desmond Johnson, Florida; one sister, Hattie Ruth (Leroy) Porterfield, Columbia, S.C. and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Pearson’s Funeral Home is in charge of these services.

Mary Jones

WALTERBORO — Services for Mary Beverly Jones, 59, are 11 a.m. Saturday at Hendersonville Baptist Church; burial in Varnville Cemetery. Visitation is 6-8 tonight at Brice W. Herndon & Sons Funeral Home. Born in Beaufort to Grover and Elah Nettles Beverly, she died June 16, 2004. Surviving are husband, Thomas Jones Jr.; children, Tisha Broach, Thomas III, Terry Jones; 13 grandchildren; 4 sisters; 1 brother.

C.L. Oates

HARTSVILLE — Funeral services for C.L. Oates, age 85, who died June 17, will be held Saturday at 11:00 from the Chapel Norton Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Philadelphia Southern Methodist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday 6-8 pm at the funeral home.

Mr. Oates was born in Darlington Co. a son of the late Clarence & Lillie Griggs Oates. He was retired from Lawson Farms and was a resident of the Bethea Baptist Home.

Surviving are his wife: Sarah Louise Oates, Darlington; daughter & son-in-law: Dorothy (Robert) May, Durham, N.C.; sons & daughter-in-laws: Franklin (Barbara) Oates, Bishopville, Jeryl (Wendy) Oates, Florence; brothers: Howard Oates, Lamar, Heyward Oates, Camden; 4 grandchild, 7 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren, 2 stepgrandchildren.

Roger Mason

AIKEN — Services for Roger Dale Mason, 60, are 11 a.m. Saturday in Aiken Memorial Garden with full military honors. Visitation is 7-9 tonight at Shellhouse Rivers Funeral Home. Born in Alapaha, Ga., to Dan Mason Sr. and Lucille DuBose Mason Grice, he died June 16, 2004. Surviving: wife, Betty Hutchinson Mason; children, Melissa Wall, Amy Nix, Cary, Brad Mason; brother, James Jr.; grandchild, Kayla Nix.

James Moates

ALLENDALE — James L. “Jim” Moates, 63, of 381 Goodson Street, Allendale, died Thursday, June 17, 2004 at his residence.

Mr. Moates was born in Laurens County on October 26, 1940, a son of the late Marshall L. and Mamie Louise Wallenzine Moates. He was an employee of Mabbett Transport Company, Inc. and a member of Little River-Dominick Presbyterian Church in Kinards, SC. He was a member of the Allendale Masonic Lodge # 109 and member of the S.C. National Guard for 9 years.

Mr. Moates is survived by his wife, Betty Grist Moates of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, James Curtis and Kathy Moates of Hendersonville, NC and Larry Christian and Jana Moates of Summerville; eleven grandchildren.

Graveside services for James L. “Jim” Moates will be conducted at 1:00 P. M. Saturday at Little River-Dominick Presbyterian Church in Kinards, SC by the Rev. Dr. Lawton Daugherty.

Memorials may be made to Little River-Dominick Presbyterian Church Cemetery Fund, 8654 SC 56, Kinards, SC 29355.

Margaret Timberlake

COLUMBIA — Services for Margaret McClendon Timberlake will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Chapel of the Holy Spirit, Still Hopes Episcopal Retirement Community, West Columbia, with burial in the cemetery at St. Francis of Assisi Episcopal Church, Chapin. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is in charge.

Mrs. Timberlake, wife of the late Thomas Howard Timberlake, died Thursday, June 17, 2004. The daughter of the late Samuel Edwin and Margaret Clayton McClendon, she was born September 12, 1916, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and grew up in Thomasville, Georgia. She attended Georgia State College for Women and in 1955 moved to Columbia with her husband and children. For the past eleven years she was a resident of Still Hopes. She had been a member of St. Francis of Assisi Episcopal Church in Chapin, Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, Forest Lake Club, The Columbia Ball, the Holly Garden Club, the American Wine Society and the National Society of Magna Charta Dames.

Surviving are daughters, Margot T. High and Ann S. Timberlake, both of Columbia, and Nancy T. McElveen of Pawley’s Island; grandchildren, Henry L Taylor III of Champaign, Ill.; Edwin M. Taylor of Richmond, Va.; Theodore A. Snyder, Jr. of Madison, Wis.; Elizabeth S. Gregg of Columbia; W. William McElveen, Jr. of Sammamish, Wash.; Carter T. McElveen of Mt. Pleasant; T. Howard Timberlake III and Alexia Ann Timberlake, both of Greenville; and great-grandchildren, Leiding and Henry Taylor IV; S. McClendon Taylor; and Emily and Zachary McElveen. A son, Thomas H. Timberlake, Jr. predeceased her.

Memorials may be made to Still Hopes Episcopal Retirement Community, 1 Still Hopes Drive, West Columbia, SC 29169, Hospice Care of Tri-County, 111 Executive Point Blvd., Columbia, SC 29210 or to a charity of one’s choice.

Jessie Mae Carter

KERSHAW — Services for Jessie Mae Carter, 90, will be held Saturday, June 19, 2004 at 3:00 o’clock pm at the First Baptist Church. Rev. Bryant Fersner and Rev. Dr. Hiram Campbell will officiate. Burial will follow in the Kershaw City Cemetery.

Mrs. Carter, born in Whitmire, SC, died Wednesday, June 16, 2004. She was the daughter of the late John Gurnie and Lyda Lavinia Melton Holder, and married to the late John Lewis “Jake” Carter. Mrs. Carter was the owner/operator of Econo Wash Laundry and a member of First Baptist Church.

Surviving are three daughters; Shirley C. Campbell, and her husband Rev. Dr. Hiram Campbell, Foxworth, Miss., Kathy C. Wilson, and her husband Joey, Kershaw, SC, Deborah C. Kerr, and her husband Rick, Roswell, Ga., one son; John L. “Johnnie” Carter, and his wife Mickey, Kershaw, SC, grandchildren; Dixie Carlisle, Lee Campbell, Jr., Stacy Campbell, Stephanie Bailey, Wendy Reeves, Jim Wilson, John Carter, Elizabeth Bush, Gary Carter, John Kerr, Andrew Kerr, and Jodie Sturkie, 16 great grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren, five sisters; Pearl H. Duncan, Cornith, Miss., Sarah H. “Tina” Holley, Kershaw, SC, Alma Todd, Summerville, SC, Gurnie Jennings, Leesburg, Fla., and Kay Connelly, Indianapolis, In. She was preceded in death by 5 sisters and 1 brother.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, Memorials & Tributes, P.O. Box 5216, Glen Allen, VA, 23058 or the Alzheimer’s Disease & Related Disorders, Mid-State Chapter, P.O. Box 7044, Columbia, S.C. 29202-7044.

The family will receive friends, Friday, June 18, 2004 from 7 to 9 pm at Baker Funeral Home.

James Rhodes

HARTSVILLE — Funeral services for James Colin Rhodes, 86, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 19, 2004 at Prospect United Methodist Church. The Rev. Bud Boatwright will officiate with burial in Magnolia Cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Friday, June 18, 2004 from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. Rhodes, widower of Claudia Johnson Rhodes and Helen Tamburrino Rhodes, died Thursday, June 17, 2004. Born in Chesterfield Co., SC, he was a son of the late Barney M. and Mary Johnson Rhodes. He was a member of Prospect United Methodist Church. He was a veteran of WWII, retired from Sonoco and was a member of the Sonoco Old Timers Club. He was a member of the Hartsville Masonic Lodge #173. He was a loving, giving, caring, husband, father, brother, grandfather, great grandfather.

Surviving are his daughters and sons-in-law, Becky and Heber Watson of Hartsville, SC, Claudia and Dale Robertson of Salisbury, NC; stepson and stepdaughter-in-law, Allen and Nora Tamburrino of Hartsville, SC; brother and sister-in-law, Bryan “JB” and Eunice Rhodes of Hartsville, SC; 9 grandchildren; 3 stepgrandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; 2 stepgreat-grandchildren.

Sandra Shumpert

LEXINGTON — Graveside services for Sandra Elaine Nettles Shumpert, 58, of Lexington, will be held at 3pm Saturday at Shumpert Family Cemetery, officiated by Rev. Pete Lovern. The family will receive friends from 6-8pm Friday at Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington. Memorials may be made to Tri-County Hospice or to Federation Center of the Blind.

Mrs. Shumpert died Tuesday, June 15, 2004. Born in Orangeburg, she was the daughter of the late Herman and Ella Lucille Lovern Griffin. Formerly of Orangeburg, Mrs. Shumpert had been an area resident for the past 17 years. She was retired from Lexington School District One as a bus driver and from Roof Basket Works of Lexington.

Surviving are her husband, Joseph A. Shumpert of Lexington; daughters and sons-in-law, Marsha Flake, Pamela Evans and Shawn Yost, all of Augusta, GA; sons and daughter-in-law, Charles “Chuck” Nettles, Jr., Jeff and Melissa Nettles, all of Orangeburg; step-daughters and sons-in-law, Beverly Jo and Alan Fulop of Virginia Beach, VA, Sandra Jo and Morgan Self of Lawton, OK; sisters and brothers-in-law, Sybil and Willie Pigate of Florence, Brenda Deese of Orangeburg, Betty and Archie Braxton of Rosenville, Loretta and Dan Warner of Orangeburg; brothers and sister-in-law, Walt Griffith, Danny and Betty Griffith, all of Orangeburg; and 19 grandchildren. Mrs. Shumpert was predeceased by her sister, Patsy Braxton; and brothers, Joe Griffin and Emory Griffin.

The family sends a special thank you to the doctors and nurses on the 8th floor of Lexington Medical Center and to Tri-County Hospice for the loving care.
