BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Services for Louis Frazier, 57, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Pilgrim Baptist Church, Bamberg, S.C. Friends may call at 5375 Freedom Road, Rowesville, S.C. The Carroll Mortuary, Bamberg, is in charge. Born in Bamberg to Samuel and Louise LaBoard Frazier, he died June 7, 2004. Surviving are father; siblings, Jerrerson Frazier, Lois Best, Venell Bannister.

Eva Singleton

SUMTER — Services for Eva Singleton, 100, are noon Saturday (viewing 11 a.m.) at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church with burial in Walker Cemetery. Job's Mortuary is in charge. Born in Sumter Co. to Henry and Caroline Kelly Singleton, she died June 15, 2004. Margaret Dean

SUMTER — A graveside service for Margaret Joan Watling Dean, 80, widow of Frederick Dean Sr., noon Saturday in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home is in charge. Born in New Delhi, India, to George and Florence Watling, she died June 17, 2004. Surviving: children, Catherine Stackhouse, Elizabeth Buddo, Frederick, Clark, Alan Dean; sister, Sylvia Houlihan; more.

Stancil Weill

KERSHAW — Services for Stancil Brent “Stan” Weill, 78, will be held Saturday, June 19, 2004 at 11:00 o’clock at Kershaw First United Methodist Church. Rev. Phillip Bostrom and Rev. Bryant Fersner will officiate. Burial will follow in the Kershaw City Cemetery.

Mr. Weill, born in Clio, SC, died Thursday, June 17, 2004. He was the son of the late Max and Katie Jernigan Weill. A graduate of Clemson College with a B.S. in civil engineering graduating with honors. He was a member of Tau Beta Pi and Phi Kappa Phi scholastic fraternities. He was employed with Wallace & Tierman Division of Pennwalt Corp. for 38 years, working in Charlotte, NC, Knoxville, Tenn., and Atlanta, Ga. He also served as branch manager for 10 years prior to his retirement. Mr. Weill was very active in the American Water Works Association and had served as past chairman of the Georgia section. A member of the Georgia Water and Pollution Control Association, where he had served as past president. He was also a member of the Water Environment Federation and the Water Environment Association of SC.

He was a member of Kershaw First United Methodist Church, where he was active in many capacities, and a dedicated member of Kershaw Lion’s Club.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Kershaw First United Methodist Church, 305 West Church Street, Kershaw, SC 29067.

Surviving are his wife, Agnes B. Weill of the home, a sister; Carolyn W. Parker of Powell, Tenn., and a number of nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends, Friday, June 18, 2004 from 6 to 7 pm at Baker Funeral Home.

Baker Funeral Home is serving the family of Mr. Weill.

Thelma Hendrix

ROCK HILL — Services for Thelma Canty Hendrix are 4 p.m. Saturday at Catawba Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Visitation is 5-8 p.m. today at the home, 2020 Indian Trail Road. Greene Funeral Home, Northwest, is in charge. Born to Alonzo Canty and Fannie Harris, she died June 16, 2004. Surviving are sisters, Helen Beck, Frances Wade, Geneva Gunton, Joyce Green, Dianne Petroni.

Betty Jane Marsh

COLUMBIA — Funeral services for Mrs. Betty Jane “B.J.” Marsh, of Columbia, SC and Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, June 19, 2004, at Trenholm Road United Methodist Church led by the Reverend Don Britt. Burial will be family private at Greenlawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be held Friday, June 18, 2004 from 6 to 8 PM at the funeral home. The family has requested in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Trenholm Road United Methodist Church, 3401 Trenholm Road, Columbia, SC 29204 and the American Red Cross Central South Carolina Chapter, 2751 Bull Street, Columbia, SC 29201. Condolences may be sent to www.mem.com. Greenlawn Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Marsh passed away June 16 after an illness with cancer. She was born in 1931 in Greensboro, Georgia, the daughter of Agnes and Hoke Smith Randall. She was a graduate of Covington, Georgia, High School and the University of Georgia where she was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority and on the swim team. She was a schoolteacher in Decatur, Georgia when she met Harry Marsh from Mississippi who was with Southern Bell (Bell South) in Atlanta at the time. They were married in 1955 and moved to Jackson Mississippi where Ray and Beth were born. B.J. was active in church and community affairs everywhere Bell South sent them. She was president of the OptiMrs Club in Jackson, Mississippi. She was president of the Sandy Springs and state of Georgia Junior Woman’s Club. Her family was selected as the outstanding Georgia family of the year in 1969. B.J. was chairman of the American Red Cross Central South Carolina Chapter and on the board of the Jacksonville, Florida chapter. She was Southeastern United States Regional Chairman of the American Red Cross and Co-Chairman of the campaign fundraiser for hurricane Hugo. She was Vice President of the Boy Scouts and leader of the Cub Scout program for South and North Carolina. She earned the Wood Badge and was honored with the Silver Beaver award. She was on the board of the Girl Scouts. She was Advanced Gift Chairman for the United Way of the Midlands. She was active with the BellSouth Pioneers Partners, Daughters of the American Revolution and the Historical Society. B.J. was selected one of the ten outstanding women of the year in Columbia for the year 1988.

Surviving are her husband, Harry Marsh; son, Ray Marsh and his wife Dominique; daughter, Beth McClure and her husband Larry; grandchildren, Kathryn and Marsh McClure, Elizabeth Gavlik and husband John, and David Laverdure; brother, Smitty Randall and his wife Barbara and Donald Randall; brother-in-law, Edgar Marsh and his wife Carol.

Carrie Payne

ALLENDALE — Services for Carrie Williams Payne, 87, widow of Jessie Payne, will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at St. John Holiness Church; burial in Beulah Baptist Church Cemetery. Born to Charles and Rebecca Aldrich Williams, she died June 12, 2004. Surviving: children, Kadie McMillan, Carrie Scott, Henry and Leon Payne; sister, Lucille Wiggins; 28 grandchildren; 74 great-grandchildren.

Lillie Stewart

COLUMBIA — Homegoing Service for Lillie Hatten Stewart of Columbia, will be held 1:00 p.m. Saturday at Temple Zion Baptist Church, with burial to follow in the church cemetery.

Bostick-Tompkins Funeral Home, Columbia, SC is in charge of the service.

Mrs. Stewart died on June 12, 2004. Born in Columbia, she was the daughter of James and Mary Pickett Hatten, and the widow of Adam Stewart. She was an active member of Temple Zion where she served as a Deaconess, a member of the Sunday School Ministry and the Mass Choir. She will be missed by all who loved and knew her.

Surviving are her children, Viola (Horace) Vereen, Mary Perry, Diane (Ruben) Taylor, Sharon (Leo) Maddox and Stanley (Belinda) Haigler; eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren.

Pamela Simmons

ESTILL — Services with burial for Pamela C. Simmons, 25, will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Long Branch Missionary Baptist Church, Gifford. Visitation is 7-8 tonight at Riley's Funeral Home, Hampton. Born to Lottie William Taylor and Jeffery Deas, she died June 13, 2004. Surviving: son, Devonte’ Latham; parents; grandparents, Lillie Mae Simmons, Vera Bing, Reatha Taylor, Freddie Spann; aunts, uncles.

Elsie Wray

CLOVER — Services for Elsie Winders Wray, 75, widow of Jones Wray, are 11 a.m. Saturday at Kings Mountain Chapel UMC, York, with burial in Woodside Cemetery. Visitation is 6-8 tonight at Bratton Funeral Home, York. Born in Clover to Sherman and Bessie Manor Winders, she died June 15, 2004. Surviving are children, Kelly Spivey, Randy Wray, Shirley Miller, Debbie Dover; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren.

Priscilla Brown

HOPKINS — Funeral service for Priscilla Brown of 7726 Cabin Creek Road will be held 2:00 P.M. Friday, June 18, 2004 at Zion Benevolent Baptist Church with Reverend Charles L. Jackson and Reverend Gerald Tucker officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held Thursday, June 17, 2004 , 4-9 P.M. at the funeral home.

Priscilla Brown, a daughter of the late Peter and Caroline Goodwin Brown, was born on February 23, 1927 in Richland County South Carolina. On Monday, June 14, 2004 She peacefully entered into eternal rest.

Priscilla was a member of Zion Benevolent Baptist Church where she served on the musical choir. She retired from the Civil Service (Fort Jackson) after more than 27 years of service.

Those left to mourn her loss are her children, James Brown (Laura) Goodwin, Hoover, AL, Dianne B.G. (Matthew) Howell, Hopkins, SC, Patricia Brown, Gadsden, SC, Theodore Brown, Hopkins, SC, Loretta B. (Anthony) Scott, Hopkins, SC; adopted daughter, Cindy Benjamin; adopted sons, Larry B. (Helen) Brown, Robert (Cynthia) Brown; sisters, Marie Brown, Gadsden, SC, Carrie B. Brown, Gadsden, SC, Grethel (Winston) Ridley, Duquesne, PA; brother, James Brown, Sr., Gadsden, SC; aunt, Reverend Louise S. Goodwin; sisters-in-law, Millie A. Brown, Louise C. Brown, Gadsden, SC; brother-in-law, Johnny Bell, Columbia, SC; fifteen grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; five honorary grandchildren; nieces, nephew and a host of loving relatives and friends.

Mae Anderson

PUYALLUP, Wash. — Services for Mae Anderson, 70, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 19, 2004 at Pilgrim Lutheran Church. Born in Columbia, S.C., to Robert and Hattie Chavis, she died June 15, 2004. She is survived by her husband, Maynard Anderson; daughter, Nell Williams of Gaston, S.C.; son, Robert Humphries of Puyallup, and two grandchildren, Lee and Jennifer Humphries.

Arvel Brindel

MOORESBORO, N.C. — Services for Arvel Denton Brindel, 83, formerly of Columbia, S.C., are 11 a.m. Saturday (visitation 9:30-11) at Stamey Funeral Home, Fallston; burial in Rose Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. Born in Jasper, Ga. to James and Mabel Brindel, he died June 16, 2004. Surviving: wife, Doris Teasley Brindel; children, James Brindel, Troyce Smart-McSwain; 2 brothers; 1 sister; 10 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren.

James Eaddy

HEMINGWAY — Services with burial for James Eaddy, 85, were held at noon Thursday at Jerusalem AME Church. Samuels and Richardson Funeral Home, Lake City, was in charge. Born in Florence Co. to Dave and Annie Singletary Eaddy, he died June 13, 2004. Surviving: wife, Ada J. Eaddy; son, Willie Eaddy; cousin reared as his own, Dorsey Heyward; 2 grandchildren; sister, Mable Davis; other relatives.

Margaret Hinrichs

COLUMBIA — Services for Margaret Louise Goodrich Hinrichs, 87, will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 19, 2004 at Cornerstone Presbyterian Church with interment to follow in Bush River Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. on Friday, June, 18, 2004 at Caughman-Harman Funeral home, Irmo/St. Andrews Chapel. Memorials may be made to the Cornerstone Presbyterian Church Mission fund.

Mrs. Hinrichs, widow of Frank A. Hinrichs, died Tuesday, June 15, 2004. Born in Blue Island, IL, she was the daughter of the late Noah B. Goodrich and Anna Fredricks Goodrich. She was a loving wife, mother, and precious grandmother and great-grandmother. Mrs. Hinrichs was a member of Cornerstone Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Ted Randall of Columbia; son and daughter-in-law, James A. and Donna Hinrichs of Columbia; nine grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.

Marilyn Easler

BEAUFORT — Services for Marilyn Sybil Smith Easler, 56, 11 a.m. Saturday: Gospel Light Christian Ministries; burial: Beaufort Memorial Gardens. Anderson Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Beaufort to Joseph and Bessie Smith, she died June 16, 2004. Surviving: husband, Jack Easler; mother; children, Richard, Christopher, Travis, Micheal Easler, Janice Morales, Nancy Easler-Stovern; 5 siblings; 13 grandchildren.

William Jacques

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Graveside services for William Lee Jacques will be held 3 p.m. Saturday in the Greenlawn Memorial Park. Leevy's Funeral Home, Taylor Street Chapel is in charge. Surviving are his sister, Hattie Sims; sister-in-law, Gladys Jacques; uncle, James Jacques; aunt, Rena Thompson; 5 nephews and 3 nieces.

Marion Holstad

ST. MATTHEWS — Memorial services for Marion Kever Holstad, 76, retired from U.S.C., widow of Delmar Holstad, will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Dukes-Harley Funeral Home, Orangeburg. Born in Dawson, Iowa, to Charles and Ora Hight Kever, she died June 17, 2004. Surviving are children, Elaine Lowder, Steven, Douglas Holstad; sisters, Florence McCrory, Lola Cantraros, Arlene Fries; grandchildren; great-grandchildren.

Roy Wood

FLORENCE — Roy Edward Wood, 53, died Tuesday, June 16, 2004 in Gaston, SC.

Born in Barnwell Co., he was the son of the late Jessie Lee Wood Sr. and Sarah Bell Owens Wood. He was a retired construction foreman with M.B. Kahn Construction Co.

Funeral services will be held 11:00AM Friday, June 18, 2004 in Mole Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Don McCormack officiating. Burial will follow in the Barnwell County Memorial Cemetery. The family received friends from 6-8pm Thursday evening at Mole Funeral Home.

Survivors include: daughters- Alisa Marie Wood of Gaston, Amber Nicole Stacy of Greeley Co.; brothers- Jessie Lee Wood Jr. of Clute, TX, Michael A. Wood of Blackville; sister- Linda Wood Dobson of Barnwell; 2 grandchildren: Landen McDaniel & Andrew Stacy; special friend: Patty H. McKissick of Florence, SC.

Dr. Paul Kattenburg

COLUMBIA — Dr. Paul M. Kattenburg, 81, a Career Diplomat; South East Asian Expert, Distinguished Professor of International Relations, and a former Foreign Service Officer and Professor of International Relations, died of a heart attack on June 12, 2004, while vacationing with his wife, in Moscow, Russia.

Dr. Kattenburg, born in Belgium, was educated at the University of North Carolina (B.S., 1943), George Washington University (M.A., 1946) and Yale University (Ph.D. in International Relations, 1949). He served in the U.S. Army on detail to the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) in 1943-5.

After a year of post-doctoral field research in Indonesia, Dr. Kattenburg joined the Department of State in 1950 as a Research Specialist on Southeast Asia, later entering the U.S. Foreign Service and serving in Saigon, Washington , Manila, and Bonn/Frankfurt as a Political Officer. In 1962-3, he attended the State Department's Senior Seminar in Foreign Policy. Returning to East Asian Affairs, he worked successively on Vietnam, Asian Regional Affairs, on detail to the Policy Planning Council, and as Country Director for the Philippines. In 1966, he was appointed Counselor of Embassy and Charge of the U.S. Mission at Georgetown, Guyana, from which he returned in 1969 to become Deputy Coordinator of Political Studies at the Foreign Service Institute, Department of State.

Since January 1973 and his retirement from the U.S. Foreign Service, Dr. Kattenburg had taught Political Science and International Studies at the University of South Carolina, where he was named the Charles L. Jacobson Professor of Public Affairs in 1980 and Distinguished Professor Emeritus on June 30, 1986. His book, The Vietnam Trauma in American Foreign Policy 1945-75, (Transaction Books, Rutgers University, 1980) has had five paper reprintings, the last in 1992. He is the author as well of numerous book chapters, articles and studies in the fields of international affairs and diplomacy, on topics ranging from international terrorism, human rights, and diplomatic techniques to the current status of US-Indochina and US-Philippine relations, and to views on nuclear strategy and naval deployments in the Indian and Pacific Oceans, as well as on US policies of intervention in Central America and elsewhere.

Dr. Kattenburg is identified in the Pentagon Papers, David Halberstam’s “The Best and the Brightest,” and in several histories of the Vietnam War as an early dissenter within the U.S. Government on aspects of the U.S. Vietnam Policy. In early 1983, he was invited by the Vietnamese Government to revisit Indochina as part of a small group of ex-U.S. diplomats. Dr. Kattenburg served on the national faculty of the University of Pittsburgh’s “Semester at Sea” around the world voyages in the fall of 1984, spring 1988, fall 1991, and again in the spring of 1997. In the fall of 1986, he was Visiting Professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and in spring 1987, Visiting Fellow in International Relations at Australian National University, Canberra. He has also been a resident scholar at the Hoover Institution, Arizona State University, Stanford University and the Bellagio Center of the Rockefeller Foundation.

Dr. Kattenburg is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mary Louise Clark Kattenburg of Columbia, South Carolina; four sons, Clark Kattenburg of Oakton, Virginia, Richard Kattenburg of Martinez, California, and John Kattenburg and Charles Kattenburg of Columbia, South Carolina; a daughter, Jeanne Carlton of Lexington, South Carolina; ten grandchildren and one great-grandson.
