Funeral services will be announced by McDougald Funeral Home, Laurinburg, N.C. Blyth Funeral Home, Greenwood, is in charge locally. Born in Laurinburg to James and Genevia Ivey, he died June 17, 2004. Surviving: wife, Sharon Davis Ivey; daughter, Jessica Stack; 7 siblings.

Lillie Bowman

NEW YORK — Services for Lillie Mae Bowman, 70, daughter of Willie and Ida Canty, 3:30 pm: First AME Zion Church; burial: Calverton National Cemetery. She died June 13, 2004. Surviving: children, Wayne, Israel Jr., Blanche Bowman, Ida Anderson, Jacqueline Mayo, Carol Patten, Kathy Willims, Sherise Wentt; siblings, Willie Jr., Calvin Canty, James Thomas, Hattie Hurd, Mary Duran, Gladys Huse, Elenora Gerald.

Fred Auman Jr.

DARLINGTON — Fred Wilton Auman, Jr. 70, of Darlington died Thursday, June 17, 2004.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 19, 2004 at 11 AM in the Trinity United Methodist Church, conducted by the Reverend Timothy Rogers. Interment will follow at Grove Hill Cemetery directed by Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home.

Mr. Auman was born in Darlington County. He was the son of the late Fred Wilton and Sadie Goodson Auman. Wilton graduated from St. David’s Academy in Society Hill and the University of South Carolina class of 1956. While at Carolina he was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity.

Mr. Auman was the President of Palmetto Furniture in Society Hill. He was recognized on numerous occasions by the Furniture Dealers Association for his many contributions to the industry. He was a member of the Darlington Kiwanis Club and received the Key Club Merit Award for his years of service as the Key Club advisor. He was the former Chairman of the Darlington County Election Commission and former President of the Associated Club of Darlington County. Mr. Auman also served on the Pee Dee Regional Executive Committee for Boy Scouts, the Board of Directors for Carolina Bank and Trust and for over a decade on the Board of Directors for the Billie Hardee Home for Boys.

Mr. Auman was a dedicated and faithful member of Trinity United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Charles Wesley Sunday school class. He served his Church as the Chairman of the Board of Stewards, Chairman of the Finance Committee, and was instrumental in the building of the Sunday school building, the Fellowship Hall, the renovation of the church sanctuary, and most recently the addition of the new Youth Building.

Survivors include his wife, Sarah Burgess Auman of the home; one son, “Chip” (Patsy) Auman of Hartsville; one daughter, “Lib” (Robbie) Foster of Columbia; one sister, Anne (Leon) Johnson of Society Hill; 7 grandchildren, Coleman, Katherine, Burgess, Marjorie Anne, Clay, Holley, and Matt, and one great grandchild. Cameron.

James Motes

ALLENDALE — James L. “Jim” Motes, 63, of 381 Goodson Street, Allendale, died Thursday, June 17, 2004 at his residence.

Mr. Motes was born in Laurens County on October 26, 1940, a son of the late Marshall L. and Mamie Louise Wallenzine Motes. He was an employee of Mabbett Transport Company, Inc. and a member of Little River-Dominick Presbyterian Church in Kinards, SC. He was a member of the Allendale Masonic Lodge # 109 and member of the S.C. National Guard for 9 years.

Mr. Motes is survived by his wife, Betty Grist Motes of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, James Curtis and Kathy Motes of Hendersonville, NC and Larry Christian and Jana Motes of Summerville; eleven grandchildren.

Graveside services for James L. “Jim” Motes will be conducted at 1:00 P. M. Saturday at Little River-Dominick Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Kinards, SC by the Rev. Dr. Lawton Daugherty.

Memorials may be made to Little River-Dominick Presbyterian Church Cemetery Fund, 8654 SC 56, Kinards, SC 29355.

Lester Sweat

LATTA — Services for Lester Lee Sweat will be held 2:00 P.M. Sunday in Cooper Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Magnolia Cemetery. Visitation will be held 7-9 P.M. Saturday in the funeral home.

Mr. Sweat, 48, died Thursday, June 17, 2004 in St. Eugene Medical Center.

Born in Dillon County, October 8, 1955, he was the son of James Franklin Sweat and the late Carrie Caulder Sweat.

Survivors include his wife, Jeannie Sweat of Latta; father, James Franklin Sweat of Latta; sons, Christopher Lee Sweat of Conway, Richard Thomas Sweat, Danny Ray Sweat and Lester Skyler Sweat, all of Latta; brother, James Franklin Sweat, Jr. of Texas ; 3 grandchildren.

Margaret Fender

BRANCHVILLE — Mrs. Margaret Anne Holliday Fender, age 78, of 10986 Hunters Chapel Road, Branchville, SC died peacefully at home on June 16, 2004. Mrs. Fender was born on Jan. 2, 1926 in Paducah, KY and was the daughter of the late John H. Holliday and Irene Etzold Holliday. She was a long time member of Hunters Chapel Baptist Church and served faithfully in many capacities for over 50 years. Most notably she served as organist and choir director.

Mrs. Fender had a successful career spanning thirty-eight years with the Dupont Company at the Savannah River Site in Aiken, SC.

Educated in the public schools in Phillipsburg, Kansas, she was an accomplished musician excelling in piano and flute performance. One of her many legacies will be the imparting of her love of music to numerous young family members and youth in the community through her music lessons and church music activities.

An avid reader, she was active in support of the Bamberg County Library, various book clubs and literacy organizations.

The funeral will be Monday, June 21, 2004, at 11:00 a.m. at Hunters Chapel Baptist Church. Burial will follow at the cemetery. Officiating will be Rev. Charles Bradley and Rev. Donnie Delk.

Mrs. Fender was predeceased in death by her husband, W.C. “Bill” Fender, one son, John Mark Fender, one daughter, Donna Marie Fender Ferguson, one grandson, Timothy Charles Fender and one brother John Neal Holliday.

Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Gloria Fender of Greenville, SC, eight grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.

Tommy Grant

NORTH CHARLESTON — Entered into eternal rest on June 19, 2004, Larry “Tommy” Thomas Grant, Jr. Residence, North Charleston, SC. The relatives and friends are invited to attend his graveside funeral services in Elmwood Cemetery, Columbia, SC, Sunday June 20, 2004 at Two O’clock. Friends may call at J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., West Ashley Chapel Saturday from Five until Seven O’clock.

Tommy was born in Columbia, SC, November 10, 1963, the son of Larry Thomas Grant, Sr., and Nancy Riggins Smith. He was a former member of Pierpont Baptist Church and a graduate of Middleton High School, where he was a member of the choir. He also attended the College of Charleston and was active in JV and Varsity Football and also active in Dixie Youth Baseball at St. Andrews Parks and Playgrounds.

Surviving are his mother and step father - Mr. and Mrs. Russell George Smith of Walterboro, SC; his father Larry Thomas Grant, Sr. of Mt. Pleasant, SC; his maternal grandparents - Margie Lee Ogburn and John Ogburn of Charleston, SC; his sister - Kathy Evans of Charleston, SC; his brother - Kyle Grant of Mt. Pleasant, SC; 3 nieces - Taylor Evans, Savannah Evans, and Emily Evans all of Charleston, SC; his uncle - Garrett Riggins of Charleston, SC.

Carolyn Chandler

HICKORY GROVE — Services for Carolyn Wilkerson Chandler, 87, widow of Marion Chandler, are 3:30 p.m. today at Mt. Vernon UMC; burial in Hickory Grove Cemetery. Bratton Funeral Home, York, is in charge. Born in Hickory Grove to William Sr. and Ola Inman Wilkerson, she died June 17, 2004. Surviving: sons, John, Marion Chandler; siblings, Roy Wilkerson, Jenelle Rhodes, Virginia Allen; 2 grandchildren.

Maxcy Dickson

WAYNE, Pa. — A memorial service for Maxcy R. Dickson, 49, is 11 a.m. Saturday at Donohue Funeral Home, Wayne, Pa. Born in Marion, S.C., to John and Helen O. Dickson, he died June 15, 2004. A restorer of his 1894 Queen Anne Victorian House, he was also a master of mustard-based Southern barbeque. Surviving: wife, Nancy; children, Sarah, Wesley; siblings, Helen, John Dickson, Ann Hollerbach.

Anna Campbell

LEXINGTON — A memorial service for Anna Bridges Campbell, 89, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Presbyterian Home of South Carolina, Lexington, with a private burial to follow in Rock Hill. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel is in charge. Mrs. Campbell, wife of the late Col. William Marr Campbell, died Friday, June 18, 2004. Born in Rock Hill, she was a daughter of the late Richard and Essie Means Bridges. A homemaker, she was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are her sons, William M. Campbell, Jr. and his wife, Patricia of Greenville, and Charles Campbell and John Campbell both of Columbia; a sister, Carolyn Drennan of Lexington; and 3 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a daughter, Carolyn Campbell.

Irene Frederick

NORTH AUGUSTA — A Mass of Christian Burial for Irene W. Frederick, 82, widow of Frank Frederick, will be held in Springville, N.Y. Rowland Funeral Home is in charge. She died June 18, 2004. She was a member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church. Surviving: daughter, Patricia Harris; son, Thomas Conrad; stepdaughter, Karen Fox. Memorials: St. Joseph Hospice, Augusta, or the American Cancer Society, Augusta.

Melba Sosna

DARLINGTON — Melba Schultz Sosna, 83, died Friday morning in a local hospital. Graveside funeral services will be held at 4 Sunday, June 20 in Darlington Memory Gardens, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mrs. Sosna was born in Harvey, Ill., a daughter of the late Walter and Alma Schultz. Mrs. Sosna had retired from Perfection American and was a member of Darlington Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Toni and Van Lloyd of Darlington; three grandchildren, Tim Miller, Matt Miller and Bobby Ayers; a number of great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Sheryl Williamson; three spouses, Anton Peters, Fred Parker and George Sosna.

The family will receive friends 6-8 Saturday night at the funeral home.

Henry Scott

COLUMBIA — Services for Henry L. Scott, 49, will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Second Union Baptist Church with burial in Lincoln Cemetery. Leevy’s Funeral Home, Taylor Street Chapel is in charge. Surviving are sisters, Idell Belle, Kay Scott, and Shani Scott; brothers, John W. Scott and Larry Carter.

SUMTER — Services for Mary Meldon Longaker, 79, registered nurse, will be held later. Bullock Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Erie, Pa., to James and Evelyn Morrison Meldon, she died June 17, 2004. She loved to play golf and was very caring. Surviving are children, Timothy Longaker, Mary Cain, Paulette Corbin; brothers, Gene, Thomas Meldon; twin sisters, Evelyn Colvin, Sister Mary Meldon; grandchildren.
