SUMTER — Services and burial for John Earl Abrams Jr., 58, will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Ebenezer Presbyterian Church, Dalzell. Williams Funeral Home is in charge. Born to John Sr. and Frances Tucker Abrams, he died June 17, 2004. Surviving are wife, Iris Singleton Abrams; children, Deborah Burr, Karen, Darrin Dinkins, Janice, Joyce, John III, Eric, Euricho Abrams; four siblings; 14 grandchildren.

Dennis Cox Sr.

WEST COLUMBIA — Services for Dennis O. Cox Sr., 74, will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, June 22, 2004, at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel. Burial with full military honors will follow in Woodridge Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday, June 21, 2004, at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association.

Mr. Cox died Saturday, June 19, 2004. Born in Georgetown, he was a son of the late Bennie W. and Janie Smith Cox. He retired from the United States Army as Chief Warrant Officer-4 after 28 and a half years of service and was a member of the Georgetown Masonic Lodge.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Geraldine (Gerry) Grier Cox of West Columbia; daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Richard H. Gehling Sr. of Lexington; son and daughter-in-law, Dennis O. and Sandy Cox Jr. of Atlanta; grandsons, Richard H. Gehling Jr. and Joshua B. Gehling of Lexington; sister, Janice Frye of Georgetown and brother, Alton Cox of Georgetown. Mr. Cox was preceded in death by brothers, Bennie Cox Jr., Bright Cox, Clyde Cox and Kenneth Cox.

Nancy Nelson

CAMDEN — Nancy Mickle Nelson was born February 7, 1917, in Cheraw, the oldest surviving child of Jessie Smith and Joseph Mickle Nelson. The family lived in Wilmington, N.C. and Bennettsville before moving to the Nelson family home at 1301 Broad St. in the spring of 1932. Miss Nelson graduated from Camden High School and attended Montreat College before working for the County Home Economic Department in Camden. She then worked as a secretary with the Santee Cooper River Project in Monks Corner.

In 1944, Miss Nelson joined the Women’s Marine Corps, serving at Camp Lejeune, N.C., Washington , D.C., San Diego, and Hawaii. After the war, she worked for the State Education Department in Columbia, and was one of Dupont’s first employees at its newly-opened May Plant, where she worked until her retirement in 1982.

A devoted daughter, niece, sister and aunt, Miss Nelson cared for her mother and aunts through many years of declining health, and loved to visit relatives and receive them in her home. Her lifetime of care for others was rewarded in her own advanced age, as her many friends, neighbors and relatives visited and cared for her often. Miss Nelson was a proud and longtime member of Bethesda Presbyterian Church. She was a former member of the Junior League of Camden, and a devoted Atlanta Braves fan.

Miss Nelson was predeceased by a sister, Caroline Nelson O’Brien of Portland, Maine, and is survived by a brother, Joseph Mickle Nelson of Titusville, Fla. and eight nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Nancy Mickle Nelson, 87, of Camden will be held Wednesday, June 23, 2004, at 11 a.m. at Bethesda Presbyterian Church with burial to follow in Quaker Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Bethesda Presbyterian Church, 502 DeKalb St., Camden, SC 29020. The Rev. Dr. William F. Summers will officiate.

Kornegay Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

John Roth

NEESES — Mr. John H. Roth, age 91, died Friday, June 18, 2004.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 23, 2004, at Neeses United Methodist Church with the Rev. Kara Matthews and the Rev. Kermit Shrawder officiating. Burial will be in Neeses Cemetery. The casket will be placed in the church at 10 a.m.

Mr. Roth was born in Greencastle, Pa., a son of the late Noah and Annie Bowers Roth. He was retired from the U.S. Post Office, was an Army veteran of World War II, a member of Neeses United Methodist Church and the Columbia Chapter of Retired Postal Employees.

Survivors include daughters, Barbara R. Chambers of Columbia and Jane R. Witt of Neeses; brother, Wilson B. Roth of Newport Richey, Fla.; six grandchildren; one great-grandson.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Culler-McAlhany Funeral Home, North.

Memorials may be made to Neeses United Methodist Church.

George Anne Thomas

GEORGETOWN — Services for George Anne “Georgie” Thomas, 67, widow of James Thomas Sr., are 11 a.m. today at Saints Delight Pentecostal Holiness Church with burial in Sandridge Cemetery. Graham Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Georgetown to Joseph Kennedy Sr. and Margaret Marie Lambert, she died June 19, 2004. Surviving: three sons; four daughters; two halfbrothers; 19 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.

Frances Ouzts

GREENWOOD — A memorial service for Frances Ouzts, 82, widow of J. Paul Ouzts, is 11 a.m. Saturday at Greenwood Memorial Gardens Chapel Mausoleum with visitation following. Harley Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Laurens to Albert and Bessie Davenport Kernells, she died June 18, 2004. Surviving: son, Larry Ouzts; sister, Sarah Ezell; grandchildren, Brad Ouzts, Kelly Hall, Jana Smith, Ashley Wright.

Elizabeth Geiger

BEAUFORT — Services for Elizabeth Ann Gill Sloan Farr Geiger, 62, member of VFW and Eastern Star, 9 a.m. Thursday in Shiloh Cemetery, Blackshear, Ga. Visitation is 6-8 tonight at Anderson Funeral Home. Born in Blackshear to Joseph and Annie Dixon Gill, she died June 21, 2004. Surviving are husband, Aaron; children, Roy Sloan, Rebecca Donahue; siblings, Marin Gill, Betty Norman; grandchildren.

Wilma Ponik

NORTH AUGUSTA — Services for Wilma O. Ponik, 83, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church; entombment Saturday in Brookfield, Wis; Prayer Vigil 6 p.m. Wednesday at Rowland Funeral Home; visitation following. Born in Clinton, Ind., she died June 20, 2004. Surviving are son, Randall Ponik; half brother, Richard Klopcic; grandchildren, Brent, Christy; great-grandson, Dylan.

Carolyn Everett

WEST COLUMBIA — Services for Carolyn Shiflett Everett, 60, of West Columbia, will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel of Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington, officiated by Pastor Charles Clinton. The family will receive friends at the residence following the service. Memorials may be made to the Pulmonary Hypertension Association or the American Heart Association.

Ms. Everett died Friday, June 18, 2004. Born in Charlottesville, Va., she was the daughter of the late Heber Allen Murphy and the late Martha Ethel Crumpler Shiflett.

Surviving are her daughter, Suzanne Ash of West Columbia; son, William Daniel Everett of Columbia; daughter-in-law, Patricia Eason of Bradenton, Fla.; brothers, Danny Crumpler of Norfolk, Va., Warren Murphy of Raleigh, NC; granddaughter, Marley Ash. Ms. Everett was predeceased by her son, Brian Everett.

Allen Elmore

ORANGEBURG — Funeral service for Allen Maurice Elmore of 571 Sunnyside Street will be held 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, June 23, 2004, at Ebenezer A.M.E. Church, St. Matthews. Interment will follow in the church Cemetery, Visitation will be held Tuesday, June 22, 2004, 4-9 P.M. at the funeral home.

Holley Funeral Home, Inc., St. Matthews is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Elmore died Friday, June 18, 2004. Born in Orangeburg he was the son of Nathan Caldwell and Carrie Elmore. He was employed as a production assistant with Electrolux Company.

He is survived by his wife, Leslie Elmore; sons, Jamal Goodwin, Allen Maurice Elmore, Jr.; daughters, Malasia Howell; brothers, Napleon Elmore, Anthony Elmore, Michael J. Elmore and Dwayne Caldwell; sister, Temika M. Elmore, Shanique Caldwell and Ke’Shaunda Caldwell.

Betty Givens

WILLISTON — Services for Betty Alice Page Givens, age 61, will be held 4:00 P.M. Thursday, June 24, 2004 at the Williston United Methodist Church with burial in Barnwell Memory Gardens on Reynolds Road. Reverends Floyd Dukes and Tom Summers, officiating. Visitation 7 to 9 P.M. Wednesday at Folk Funeral Home in Williston. Memorials may be made to Edisto Baptist Church Building Fund, c/o Rev. Dukes, 12838 Main Street, Williston SC 29853. Mrs. Givens, wife of Otis Allen Givens, Jr., died Monday. Born in White Pond, she was a daughter of the late Cole Livingston Page Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Moseley Page. She retired after 35 years of teaching middle school students in the Aiken, Orangeburg and Williston Public School Districts. A member of Edisto Baptist Church and the American Legion Auxiliary Unit #75. She was the organist at the Williston United Methodist Church for 20 years, Choir Director and the church secretary.

Survivors include her husband; daughter and son-in-law, Renee Givens and John McHenry, III; sons and daughter-in-law, Otis Allen “Len” and Lee-Ann Givens, III; Thomas “Buddy” Brady and William E. “Billy” Brady all of Williston; brothers, Dr. Samuel William Page of Geneva, Switzerland, Cole L. Page, Jr. of Williston; grandson, Conner Allen Givens.

Lawrence Riley

TRENTON — Mr. Lawrence Coley Riley, 86, of West Wise St., died Monday 6-21-04 at the Edgefield Health Care Center.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday 6-23-04 at 11 a.m. at Ebenezer Cemetery in Trenton.

Mr. Riley was a native of Edgefield County and a retired forrester of 30 years. He was a former mayor of Trenton and a veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Isabell Lybrand Riley of the home; daughter, Ann and David Barnhill of Lexington; sons, Larry and Sandra Riley, North Augusta, Danny and Vickie Riley of Edgefield; brother, Austin and Ethel Riley of Aiken; 7 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren.

The family is at the home and will receive friends Tuesday 6-22-04 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Edgefield Mercantile Funeral Home.

Hugh Taylor

LANCASTER — Services for Hugh Wilson Taylor, 78, WWII veteran, 2 p.m. Wednesday at First UMC, where he was a member; burial: Lancaster Memorial Park. Born in Bennettsville to Charles and Mae Cook Taylor, he died June 20, 2004. He retired from the US Postal Service and was a member of A.L. #31. Surviving: wife, Mildred Crenshaw Taylor; children, Mark Taylor, Lisa Dixon, Janice Ketchum; 5 grandchildren.

Elsa Bouronich

CHARLESTON — Entered into eternal rest on the evening of June 20, 2004, Elsa Reenstjerna Bouronich, widow of Vincent James Bouronich. Residence, Charleston, SC. The relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral services Wednesday, June 23, 2004 at one o’clock in St. John’s Lutheran Church. Interment, Magnolia Cemetery. Friends may call at J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Downtown Chapel Tuesday between five and seven o’clock.

Mrs. Bouronich was born December 26, 1911 in Summerville, South Carolina, the daughter of Otto F. Reenstjerna and Beulah Mueller Reenstjerna. She was a graduate of Memminger High School and a lifelong faithful member of St. John’s Lutheran Church.

She is survived by one son: Vincent J. Bouronich, Jr. and his wife Sharon of Lexington, SC; three daughters: Elza B. Dennis of Charleston, SC, Kathryn B. Tolley and her husband Jim of Charleston, SC, and Gloria B. Ferris and her husband Bob of Round O, SC; eight grandchildren: Tamberlyn B. Trail, Kyle V. Bouronich, Chad R. Dennis, Jennifer L. Dennis, Hank Tolley, Ryan Tolley, Angela M. Ferris, and Matt Ferris; two great grandchildren: Tessa and Daniel Trail. She was loving and devoted Mother; Grandmother, and Great-Grandmother.

Memorials may be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church, 5 Clifford Street, Charleston, SC 29401 or to Lutheran Hospice of Charleston, 735 Johnnie Dodds Blvd., Mt. Pleasant, 29464.

Jay Clegg Jr.

LEESVILLE — Services for John Richard “Jay” Clegg Jr., 33, of Leesville, will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Red Bank Baptist Church, officiated by Rev. Butch Powell. Burial will follow in Gibson Cemetery. Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington is handling arrangements. Memorials may be made to Epworth Children’s Home or to the charity of one’s choice. The family will receive friends at the home of Rick and Judy Clegg, 861 Old Orangeburg Road, Lexington, as well as at the home of Robert and Diane Craig, 212 Sherwood Drive, Lexington.

Mr. Clegg died Saturday, June 19, 2004. Born in Lexington, he was the son of John R. Clegg Sr. and Judith Gantt Clegg. A lifetime area resident, he was a member of Red Bank Baptist Church and attended First Calvary Baptist Church. Mr. Clegg was employed by Stanley Technology, Inc. and was a master electrician.

Surviving, in addition to his parents and in-laws of Lexington, are his wife of thirteen years, Tracie Craig Clegg of Leesville; daughter, Danielle Clegg and son, Kyle Clegg, both of the home; sisters, Mandi Maner of Lexington, Kathy Jones of Elkins Park, Pa.; maternal grandmother, Dorothy L. Gantt of Lexington; paternal grandfather, E.C. Clegg Jr. of West Columbia; special uncle and aunt, Chuck and Mary Gantt of Lexington. Mr. Clegg was predeceased by his maternal grandfather, Charles L. Gantt Sr. and paternal grandmother, Jettie L. Clegg.

Anthony Brooks

PELION — Graveside services for Anthony L. Brooks, 41, son of Watson and Helen Pleasant Brooks, will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Laurel Baptist Church Cemetery. Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington is in charge. He died June 19, 2004. Surviving are his mother; wife, Rachel Tidwell Brooks; son, Seth Brooks; brothers, James, Michael Brooks; uncles, Donald, David, Richard, James Stone.
