Mr. Nord was born August 22, 1919 in Amherst, Ohio, the youngest of three children of Walter and Virginal Nord. From an early age Evan was exposed to the world of design and manufacturing, working with his father and his brother, Eric in the family enterprises, The American Specialty Company and U.S. Automatic Corporation.

Mr. Nord was educated in the Amherst public schools and received his degree in engineering in 1941 from Case School of Applied Sciences. In 1944 Evan and his brother-in-law Joe Ignat enlisted together in the U.S. Navy. Evan served as an officer for two years on ships in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters. Upon his return from World War II Evan rejoined his father and his brother, Eric in the workplace at U.S. Automatic. Evan focused his talents throughout his business career on manufacturing processes, facility planning and employee relations.

In 1954 Evan, along with his father and brother, founded Nordson Corporation and were soon embarked on developing Nordson into the world’s premier manufacturer of equipment to apply coatings and adhesives.

Evan Nord and Cynthia Whitehead Tinker were married May 28, 1966. Their five children, Eric, Bruce, Kathleen, Ethan and Allyson, were raised in the Oberlin community and, after Evan retired in 1978 as an officer of Nordson, in their second community of choice, Columbia, S.C.

Evan Nord had a love parallel to his family and Nordson. Evan was deeply committed to improving the communities in which they lived and particularly the lives of those who are disadvantaged. In 1967 Evan became President of Nordson Foundation, another family initiative. Working through the foundation where appropriate, but also applying his own resources and unstinting effort, Evan played a crucial leadership role in creating the Oberlin Early Childhood Center, the Community Foundation of Lorain County, the Oberlin Community Center and The W.G. Nord Mental Health Center. Evan’s leadership in preservation and adaptive reuse is abundantly evident in the Amherst Freight Station, the Oberlin Depot, the New Union Center for the arts in Oberlin, the Amherst Historical Society’s Sandstone Center, the new headquarters in Amherst for The Nord Family Foundation and the Oberlin Historical and Improvement Organization’s Oberlin Heritage Center, particularly the Jewitt, Monroe and King Houses.

Mr. Nord carried his leadership in philanthropy to South Carolina. He was a key participant in developing the Central Carolina Community Foundation. Evan supported The Nurturing Center which his wife Cindy founded in 1989. His service in the Columbia community also included the South Carolina State Museum Foundation, New Morning, Heathwood Hall and the South Carolina Children’s Home. Evan and Cindy were honored in 1995 as the Humanitarians of the Year by the Palmetto Society of the United Way of the Midlands.
