AIKEN — Services for M. Shelton Quattlebaum, 79, WWII veteran, widower of Lucille Hartley Quattlebaum, 3 p.m. Sunday at Millbrook Baptist Church; burial in Bethany Cemetery; visitation 6-8 tonight at Shellhouse-Rivers Funeral Home. Born in Aiken to James and Cora Rouis Quattlebaum, he died August 5, 2004. Surviving are son, Danny; siblings, Elise Watson, W. Ray Quattlebaum; grandchildren,; great-grandchildren.

Ethel Adair

SPARTANBURG — Ethel Irene Derrick Adair, 93, of 4684 Schirra Court, formerly of Columbia, died Friday, August 6, 2004, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Born February 20, 1911, in Lexington County and reared in the Dutch Fork community, she was the daughter of the late John Wingard and Mary Irene Weed Derrick and the widow of Thomas Cecil Adair, Sr. She was a member of Reformation Lutheran Church in Columbia.

Survivors include a son, Thomas Cecil Adair, Jr. and his wife Teressa of Greenville; a daughter, Celia Lane Adair of Spartanburg; a sister, Alice Derrick Hite of West Columbia; and a granddaughter, Elizabeth Ingra Adair. She was predeceased by a grandson, John Thomas Adair; a sister, Elberta Derrick Myers Sutherland; and six brothers, B. O’Merle Derrick, Sr., William Graydon Derrick, Wilbur Lee Derrick, Robert Ellis Derrick, John Madison Derrick, and Bennie Herman Derrick.

Visitation will be 2-2:45 p.m. Sunday, August 8, 2004, in the Fellowship Hall of Reformation Lutheran Church in Columbia, Funeral services will follow at 3:00 p.m. in the Church conducted by the Rev. W. Osborne Herlong. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery, Columbia. Nephews will serve as Pallbearers.

Memorials may be made to Reformation Lutheran Church, 1118 Union Street, Columbia, SC 29201.

The family is at the home.

Timothy Bramlett

SUMTER — Services for Timothy Allen Bramlett, 43, employed by Metokote Corp., 3 p.m. Sunday in Bethany Baptist Church Cemetery. Born in Sumter to Edward Bramlett and Nettie Ardis Nobles, he died August 6, 2004. Surviving are mother; father; stepmother, Jeanette Bramlett; son, Timothy; half brothers, Richard, Gregory Ferst, O’Neil Robinson; half sisters, Faye Williamson, Teresa Pierson.

Robert Flitter

WEST COLUMBIA — Services for Robert Marion Flitter, 64, of West Columbia, will be held at 2pm Sunday in Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church, conducted by Rev. Paul Aebischer and Rev. Ginny Aebischer, with burial to follow at the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church or the American Cancer Society. Pallbearers will be Michael Flitter, Billy Hayes, Mike Burrell, Jerod Howard, Ray Cobia, and Henry Meetze. The family will receive friends from 5-7pm Saturday at Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington.

Mr. Flitter died Thursday, August 5, 2004. Born in Columbia, he was the son of Mary M. Flitter and the late Marion Eugene Flitter. He was a lifetime area resident and was self-employed. Mr. Flitter was a member of Mt. Tabor Lutheran and also a member of GWRRA.

He is survived by his loving mother, Mary M. Flitter of West Columbia; sons and daughters-in-law, Robert Michael and Stephanie Flitter of Comer, GA. and Glen and Angie Flitter of Gilbert; brother and sister-in-law, John Wesley and Cathy Flitter of West Columbia; four grandchildren, Christopher Michael, Jessica Cameron, Kayley Rebekah, and Owen Thomas; and loving friend, Donna Flitter.

Mattie Ashmore

COLUMBIA — Services for Mattie Ruth Ashmore will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Bostick-Tompkins Funeral Home with burial in Serenity Cemetery. Born in Barnwell to Quincy and Nettie Staley Ashmore, she died August 4, 2004. Surviving are children, Leon, Ronnie, Sadie, Daisy, Mattie, Marion and Gladys; grandchildren.

Myrtle Dove

DILLON — A graveside service for Myrtle S. Dove, 96, will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday in Greenlawn Cemetery. Visitation is 7-9 tonight at Cooper Funeral Home. She died Aug. 6, 2004. Surviving are children, Lois Dove, Gail Pope, Kenneth Dove, Mervin Dove, Vernon Dove, James Dove; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren.

Carrie Alston

HARTSVILLE — Services with burial for Carrie Emmalou Alston, 89, widow of John Alston, will be 1 p.m. today at Kingsville United Methodist Church. Hines Funeral Home is in charge. She was born in Lee Co. to Paul and Annie Smalls Cooks. Surviving: children, Annie Ceaser, Christine Hooks, John Alston; siblings, Lillie Pooler, Annie Graham, James Cooks; 23 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren.

Alberta Brown

WINNSBORO — Services with burial for Alberta Brown, 83, are 1 p.m. Thursday at Friendship AME Church; visitation 1-9 tonight at Glover's Memorial Chapel. Born to John and Essie J. Green, she died Aug. 6, 2004. Surviving: children, Benjamin Brown III, Mary Dubose, Martha Saunders; siblings, John, James, Isiah, Moses Green, Alvelder Mynatt, Ollie Wall, Lillie Crew; aunts; grandchildren; great-grandchildren.

Helen Avant

GEORGETOWN — Services for Helen Avant, 86, 2 p.m. today at First Baptist Church; burial in Center Baptist Churchyard. Graham Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Georgetown Co. to John and Hattie W. Miller, she died Aug. 9, 2004. Surviving: husband, Remar Avant; children, Kerry Avant, Brenda Thomas; grandchildren, Phillip Jr., William Thomas, Stephen II, Elizabeth Avant, James IV, Ann Wilkinson; 1 great-grandchild.

Jack Henderson

HAMPTON — Mr. Jack Miles Henderson, 71, of 501 Ann Street in Hampton, died Tuesday morning in the Harper Nursing Center after an extended illness.

Born Nov. 16, 1932 in Darien, GA, he was the son of Janie Woods Canterino of Savannah and the late I.D. Henderson. He was an Air Force veteran and had retired after 24 years as a Tech Sgt. from the Georgia Air Guard 165th Air Lift Group. He had also been a parts manager with Epps Motor Company and Lybrand Motor Company in Hampton as well as Tison Motor Company in Estill. He attended West End Baptist Church in Hampton.

He is survived by his mother of Savannah; his wife, Betty Crosby Henderson of the home; 2 sons and daughters-in-law, Patrick and Marlene Henderson of Brunson and Glenn and Nancy Henderson of Helena Montana. There are 4 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 3 PM in the chapel of Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home in Hampton, conducted by Rev. Charles Moore. Burial will follow in Hampton Cemetery.

Friends may call at the chapel on Wednesday evening from 6 until 8 PM and until the hour of the services on Thursday.

Judy McConnell

PELION — Memorial services for Mrs. Judy Lewis McConnell will be held Thursday, August 12, 2004 at 3 PM at Suburban Baptist Church, Holland St., West Columbia, SC. The family will receive friends from 1 PM until the time of the service at the church on Thursday.

Mrs. McConnell, 46, of Pelion, SC, wife of the late David Earl McConnell, died Monday afternoon, August 9, 2004, after a battle with cancer.

Born in Pageland, SC, she was a daughter of the late Steve and Alice Gardener Lewis, Cayce, SC.

A daughter, Angela McConnell Spires, and her husband, Kelvin, Pelion, SC; son, Dylan Hutto, Gaston, SC; grandchildren, Dalton Helms and Kayla Spires, Pelion, SC; and several brothers and sisters that she found later in life survive.

The family has asked that flowers be omitted and that memorials in memory of Judy be made to Angela McConnell Spires, 195 George Brown Rd., Pelion, SC 29123.

Ruth Law

BISHOPVILLE — Ruth Muller Law, 88, widow of Robert Wolling Law, Jr., died Tuesday, August 10, 2004.

Born in Blythewood, she was the daughter of the late Lee Muller and the late Lottie Coyner Muller.

She was a 1938 graduate of the University of South Carolina and taught in the Elliott, Hartsville, and Bishopville public schools for many years. She was a member of Mt. Zion Presbyterian Church and a former member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Blythewood.

Survivors include two sons, Robert Wolling Law, III and his wife, Jerry of Bishopville, and John Muller Law of Columbia; a daughter, Anne Law Finch of Durham, NC; a sister, Wilhelmina Unkefer of Winter Park, FL; four grandchildren, Jennifer Law Dahmen of Wake Forest, NC, Nelson Fox Law of Louisburg, NC, Kathryn Marley Finch of Raleigh, NC, and Suzanne Muller Finch of Durham, NC; two great-grandchildren, Nicholas Law Dahmen and Sarah Christine Dahmen; as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Lee Muller and Fred Muller, and six sisters, Mary Lou Muller, Lucy Smith, Virginia Powers, Emma Heins, Rachel Kempson, and Laura Thomas.

Graveside services will be held at 3 P.M. Thursday in the St. Luke Cemetery near Wisacky with Rev. Robert Chastain officiating.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the home, 200 S. Main St., Bishopville.

The family wishes to express their appreciation to the staff of McCoy Nursing Home for the loving care and attention given to their mother.

Joseph Medlock

LAURENS — Joseph Bramlett Medlock, 82, of Martha Franks Baptist Retirement Center, died Monday, August 9, 2004.

Born in Laurens County, he was the son of the late Oscar and Maude Bramlett Medlock, and the husband of the late Frances (Doll) Mills Medlock. He served in the US Army during World War II, infantry Div. #85 and was Post Commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars #3354, member of the Disabled American Veterans, and the American Legion Post #23 in Laurens.

He was extremely active in his community and state, serving as Mayor of Laurens 1950-1958. At that time, the office was for 2 years. He was the first elected mayor to serve 4 terms and, at the age of 27, he was also the youngest mayor in SC. In 1991-1992, he was President of SCARE-SC Assoc. of Registered Elected Officials, and a member of the Laurens City Election Commission. In 1977 he was appointed by the Governor to serve on the Rural Water Advisory Board, a first-ever appointment from Laurens County. He received honorable mention as a Jefferson Award Nominee. He served Laurens County as Chief Bailiff in Criminal Court for 42 years. He was a member of the Adah Chapter #6 of the Eastern Star for 50+ years. Long active as a Mason, he was Worshipful Master of the Palmetto Lodge #19; served as High Priest of the Rising Sun Chapter #6, and member of the SC Council #20 Knights Mason. In 1984 he received the Certificate of Merit-2nd highest award in Masonry. As member of the York Rite, he was Past Commander, Past Illustrious Master, and Past High Priest-receiving the highest honor bestowed on a York Rite Member-(KYCH) Knight of the York Cross of Honor. As a Shriner, and member of the Laurens County Shrine Club, he had served as President, and in 1976 elected Potentate of the Hejaz Temple. In 1987 the Laurens Exchange Club honored him with the “Book of Golden Deeds.” The Laurens Jaycees recognized him as “Young Man of the Year” in 1985; and in 1988 the Woodmen of the World awarded him the honor of “Top Citizen.” For many years, he was a baseball umpire and auctioneer. He was a lifelong member of Second Baptist Church and served as Trustee for many years.

Mr. Medlock was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He is survived by one sister-in-law, Mrs. Carl (Lucille) Medlock of Laurens; and brother/sister-in-law, “Freddie” and William H. Mills, Jr. of Newberry; other nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Graveside services will be 11:00 AM Wednesday, August 11, 2004 at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Officiating will be Rev. J.D. Shiflet, Pastor of Second Baptist Church and Dr. Russell Dean of Martha Franks Baptist Retirement Center. Masonic Rites will follow by Palmetto Masonic Lodge #19. Visitation will be after the graveside service.

Honorary Escort will be Past Potentates of the Hejaz Temple, members of Laurens County Shrine Club, and the Knights of the King Sunday School Class of Second Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Second Baptist Church, 416 Fleming Street, Laurens, SC 29360 or the Shriners Hospital, 950 W. Faris Road, Greenville, SC 29605.
