Margaret Hicks will officiate with burial in Bethlehem United Methodist Church Cemetery. Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is serving the family. The family will receive friends Thursday, July 1, 2010 from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Tracy died Wednesday, June 30, 2010. Born in Darlington Co., SC, she was a daughter of John Lorrain and Jearldine Gainey Tolson. She was a member of North Hartsville Baptist Church and the Trendsetters Sunday School Class. She graduated from Calvary Christian School. Surviving are her father and mother of Hartsville, SC; brother and sister-in-law, Ray and Crystal Splawn of Rutherfordton, NC; aunts and spouses, Zelda and David Connell, Evelyn and Wilson Steen, Audria Tolson, Emily and Neil Ritter, Josephine Tolson, Christine Tolson, all of Hartsville, SC; uncles and spouse, Mike and Jan Gainey of Greenville, SC, Leon Tolson of Hartsville, SC.

Mike Smith

February 16th, 1957 - June 30th, 2010

Graveside services for George Michael “Mike” Smith, 53, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 2, 2010 at McBee Cemetery. The Rev. Gary Compton will officiate and Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is serving the family. The family will receive friends Friday, July 2, 2010 following the service at the graveside. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice. Mr. Smith died Wednesday, June 30, 2010. Born in Hartsville, SC, he was a son of Gloria Ingram Calder and the late Jack W. Smith. He was retired from the U.S. Postal Service. He was a loving son, father, and poppy. Surviving are his daughter, Jennifer Smith Lucas of McBee, SC; mother, of McBee, SC; brother, Jack W. Smith, Jr. of McBee, SC; grandson, Trevor Ray Lucas of McBee, SC.

Robert Bass

February 11th, 1959 - June 30th, 2010

Graveside services for Robert King Bass, Jr., 51, will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 3, 2010 at Magnolia Cemetery. The family will receive friends following the service. Robert was born in Hartsville, SC, the son of the late Robert K. and Hylda Inabinet Bass. He was survived by his sister, Elizabeth “Beth” Bass of Atlanta, GA. Jose Luis Melo

Funeral services for infant Jose Luis Melo, who died Friday, July 2, 2010, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, July 5, 2010 at the Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Eliseo Itehua will officiate with burial in Damascus Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Surviving are his parents, Betty Lewis Marroquin and Joel Melo Vazquez of Hartsville, SC; sisters, Brittany Kilgore, Selena Gutierrez, Leticia Perez, Breana Marroquin all of Princeton, KY, Alicia Ramirez, Mariana Valezquez, Angelica Valezquez all of Owensboro, KY; paternal grandparents, Eligio Melo Hernandez of Bishopville, SC and Teodora Vazquez Tavera of Mexico; maternal grandmother, Barbara Prowell of Princeton, KY; aunts, Edna Wilson, Melissa Prowell, April Wilson all of Princeton, KY, Vianet Melo Vazquez, Sarai Melo Vazquez, Alicia Melo Vazquez, Tavita Melo Vazquez all of Mexico.

Virginia Josey McIntosh

August 16th, 1916 - July 5th, 2010

Virginia Josey McIntosh, 93 years, affectionately known by her family as “Gee”, died peacefully July 5, 2010. She was the daughter of the late James Arthur and Annie Virginia Josey. She played basketball and graduated from the Lee County school system. She was the bookkeeper for J.L. Coker and Company until 1951 when she married John Charles McIntosh. She worked as bookkeeper for Quality Hardware until the 1980’s. She was an officer and member of the American Legion and Hartsville Civinettes for many years and helped with the Halloween carnival when it was held at the old Hartsville Armory. She was a member of Hartsville First Baptist Church for over fifty years where she was active as a Sunday School teacher. Although Gee bore no children of her own, she made all children feel like they belonged to her. Nieces and nephews loved to stay with her at her home, often calling it “Camp Gee”, because she made everything fun. She had a definite love for white cats and will be greatly missed by her loving “Buffy”. She is survived by a beloved sister, Mary Munn of Spartanburg, SC; a sister-in-law, Retha McIntosh Chapman (Raymond) who was like a sister to her; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, John Charles McIntosh; sister, Lorena Johnson; and brother, Harry Josey. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 5-7 p.m. at the home of Pam and Mac Chapman, 1745 Antioch Rd. The service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 7, 2010, at First Baptist Church with burial at Magnolia Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to First Baptist Church, 104 E. Home Ave., Hartsville, SC 29550 or the John Hart Cottage, Box 212, Hartsville, SC. Brown-Pennington-Atkins is serving the family.

Helen Tye Burns

August 29th, 1925 - July 6th, 2010

The funeral service for Helen Irene Tye Burns, 84, will be held at 11:00AM on Thursday, July 8th , 2010 at First Presbyterian Church in Hartsville, SC. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Greensboro, NC on Friday, July 9th, 2010 at 1:00 PM The family will receive guests from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM on Wednesday, July 7th, 2010 at Brown Pennington Atkins Funeral Home in Hartsville. She died on Tuesday, July 6th, 2010. Mrs. Burns was born on August 29th, 1925 to John Pierson and Juanita Massey Tye in Haskell, OK where she grew up and graduated from Haskell High School. She then relocated with her family to Muskogee, OK and resided there while working for the Veterans Administration during WWII. On June 29th, 1946, she married D.C. Burns of Greensboro, NC where they lived for their 53 years of marriage and until his death in 2000. During those years she was employed by Blue Bell/Wrangler Corporation until her retirement. They were charter members and actively involved in the life of Presbyterian Church of the Cross. In 2001, Mrs. Burns moved to Hartsville, SC. She was warmly received into the fellowship of First Presbyterian Church of Hartsville. For the past three years she has been a resident of Presbyterian Communities of SC in Florence where she made many new friends and received consistently excellent care. Surviving are her son, Mark P. Burns (Melissa) of Hartsville, SC; grandsons, Mark P Burns II (April) of Elgin, SC, Matthew C. Burns (Emily) of Columbia, SC, Myles T. Burns (Olivia) of Columbia, SC; and 7 great-grandchildren, Trey, Jada, Brooke, Parker, Madison, Thomas and Virginia Burns. Also surviving are brothers and sisters, John Robert Tye (Ginny), Jerry Tye (Flo), Ann Roe(Bob), all of Muskogee, OK and Norma Jo Cutler (Don) of Arlington, TX, as well as many loving nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Gene Tye (Millie) of Bakersfield, CA and Harold Tye (Marie) of Tulsa, OK. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Billie Hardee Home for Boys, PO Box 617, Darlington, SC 29540.

Loren Michael Mankin, Sr., 64, died Wednesday, July 7, 2010. Born in Flint, MI, he was a son of the late Eugene and Ruby Mankin. Surviving are his sons, Loren M.”Mike” Mankin, Jr of Hartsville, SC, Eugene B. Mankin of Ash, NC; grandchildren, Caison M. Mankin of Southport, NC, Benjamin G. Mankin of Ash, NC, Gavin E. Mankin of Ash, NC, Lauren A. Mankin of Shallotte, NC. Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home of Hartsville, SC is serving the family.

Joseph L. Harvin

March 25th, 1943 - July 12th, 2010

Funeral services for Joseph “Joe” Lucas Harvin, 67, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 14, 2010 at Wesley United Methodist Church. The Rev. The family will receive friends Tuesday, July 13, 2010 from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Wesley United Methodist Church, 145 E. College Ave., Hartsville, SC 29550 or The American Cancer Society, Lung Cancer Research, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210. Mr. Harvin died Monday, July 12, 2010. Born in Hartsville, SC, he was a son of the late J. B. and Miriam Watford Harvin. He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church and was previously employed with Sonoco and Nucor-Vulcraft. He loved his children, his life-long friends, and his co-workers. He also loved to fish, work in his garden and watch his grandsons play baseball. Surviving are his son and daughter-in-law, Jody and Elizabeth Harvin of Florence, SC; daughters and sons-in-law, Tara Harvin of Hartsville, SC, Tammie and Tim Wilson of Mt. Olive, NC, Tiffany and Harry Wilfong of Hartsville, SC, Traci and Robert Thompson of Kissimmee, FL; brother and sister-in-law, Richard "Dick" and Tattin Harvin of Houston, TX; 13 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren.

Tom Strickland

December 22nd, 1932 - July 12th, 2010

Graveside services for Cecil “Tom” Strickland, 77, will be held at 12:00 p.m. Thursday, July 15, 2010 at Mt. Elon Baptist Church Cemetery. The Rev. Margaret Hicks & the Rev. Rob Brazell will officiate and Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is serving the family. The family will receive friends Wednesday, July 14, 2010 from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home. Mr. Strickland, widower of Mary Watkins Strickland, died Monday, July 12, 2010. Born in Darlington Co., SC, he was a son of the late Marion Stafford and Annie Register Strickland. He was a member of Mt. Elon Baptist Church and attended Solid Rock Mission for Christ in the evenings. He served in the United States Air Force and was retired from Byerly Hospital. Surviving are his sister and brother-in-law, Miriam and Sambo Hall of Hartsville, SC; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Viola Strickland Cook.

Phyllis Knab Petersen

July 21st, 1926 - July 13th, 2010

Funeral services for Phyllis Knab Petersen, 83, will be held at 12:00 p.m. Saturday, July 17, 2010 at the Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Mrs. Petersen, widow of Paul V. Petersen, died Tuesday, July 13, 2010. Born in New York, NY, she was a daughter of the late Phillip and Margaret Primrose Knab. Surviving are her daughters and sons-in-law, Sue and Sam Ingram of Hartsville, SC, Laura and Srini Mahabhashyam of Hartsville, SC; grandchildren, Srini Mahabhashyam, Jr., Anand Mahabhashyam. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Lillian Schielke and Margaret Wilczynski.

Richard Harry McInvaill, Jr.

April 11th, 1920 - July 17th, 2010

Graveside services for Richard Harry McInvaill, Jr., 90, will be held at 11:00 p.m. Monday, July 19, 2010 at Magnolia Cemetery. The Rev. Fran Elrod will officiate with burial in Magnolia Cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Sunday, July 18, 2010 from 4-6 p.m. at the residence, 1529 Ousleydale Rd. Memorials may be made to the Wesley UMC Soup Kitchen, 145 E. College Ave., Hartsville, SC 29550 or Hartsville Interfaith Ministries Food Bank, 210 Swift Creek Rd., Hartsville, SC 29550. Mr. McInvaill died Saturday, July 17, 2010. Born in Darlington Co., SC, he was a son of the late Richard Harry and Maude Gandy McInvaill. He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church and previously was the Sunday School Superintendent. He served in World War II in the Army Medical Corps and was in the Pacific area on a hospital ship platoon. He received his B.A. and M.Ed at the University of South Carolina. He was a retired school teacher with 34 years of service, 18 of those were teaching geography and history and being a guidance counselor at the Hartsville Junior High School. He also taught at Winthrop University, Davidson College, University of North Carolina, Columbia College and Coker College. Surviving are his wife, Helen Godfrey McInvaill of Hartsville, SC; son, Rick McInvaill of Hartsville, SC.

Ethel Elgin Vance

April 18th, 1922 - July 17th, 2010

Ethel Elgin Vance, 88, passed away Saturday, July 17, 2010 at her home. Mrs. Vance was born April 18, 1922 in Winston Salem, NC to the late John and Tula King Elgin. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 20, 2010 at Westview Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Ed Griggs officiating. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, July 17, 2010 at Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Wesley United Methodist Church, 145 E. College Ave. Hartsville, SC 29550 or to a charity of one’s choice. Ethel grew up in Bynum, NC and attended Pittsboro High School. With her husband, Colwell “Carley” Vance, they lived in Ashboro, NC, Laurinburg, NC, and Hartsville, SC. She was active in the Rosa Lee Circle of Wesley United Methodist Church and worked in Coker’s Department Store for many years. Mrs. Vance is survived by her husband of 65 years, Carley Vance of Hartsville, SC; son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Ray Vance of Hasrtville, SC; grandchildren, Micheal (Amber) Vance, M. T. Vance; great grandson; Jackson Vance; sisters, Mary Fairrington, Edna Whitt; niece, Debbie Johnson. She was preceded in death by her brother, James Tula Elgin.
