Allan Groth

SUMTER — Allan R. Groth, 68, husband of Judith Laidler Groth, died Monday, November 8, 2004 in Tuomey Healthcare System.

Born in Enderlin, North Dakota, he was the son of the late Alfred Groth and the late Estella Berland Groth.

Mr. Groth was a retired Major with the U.S. Air Force with 26 years of service. He was a recipient of the Silver Star, Distinguished Flying Cross with 8 Oak Leaf Clusters, The Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal with 24 Oak Leaf Clusters, Vietnam Service Medal with 3 Bronze stars, the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Device with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters. Mr. Groth was a member of the Special Operations Association, Delta Force, The Sumter Camera Club, Sumter Amateur Radio Association and an avid sail plane pilot. He had a believers baptism at Westside Baptist Church, in December 2003, where he attended.

Surviving are his wife of Sumter; two sons, Jeff Groth and his wife Linda of Raleigh, NC and Kevin Groth and his wife Maria of Saginaw, TX; a daughter, Laura Mossell and her husband Mark of Sumter; a sister, Berniece Grubb of Seattle, Washington ; 5 grandchildren, Justin Groth, Bradley Groth, Matthew Mossell, Jacob Mossell and Mary Katheryn Mossell. He was predeceased in death by two sisters, Barbara Ford and Anne Groth.

Funeral Services will be held at 2 PM Thursday at Westside Baptist Church with the Rev. Mark Bourdeaux officiating.

Burial will follow in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with full military honors.

Honorary Pallbearers will be members of the Special Forces Project Delta, Dr. Billy Clowney and Dr. Thomas Hawkey.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Wednesday at the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home, 599 Covington Drive.

Memorials may be made to the Special Forces, Chester Howard- Delta Memorial Fund, 1430 Billings, Houston, TX, 77055 or a charity of one’s choice.

Norma H. Forbes

1919-2003

Paxville, S. C.

Norma Halvorsen Forbes, 84, widow of James Le Roy Forbes, died Tuesday, July 15, 2003 at her home.

Born in Lily, South Dakota, she was the daughter of the late Gustave Halvorsen and the late Anna Sannes Halvorsen.

She was a member of Paxville United Methodist Church.

Norma Forbes life was a gift to her family, friends, and anyone who knew her. She had a special talent for creating a warm and loving home in any part of the world–from Panama to Newfoundland. A graduate from Nettleton Business College, Norma was more than a proficient secretary as she put her whole self into helping not only her employers, but all those she encountered, both old and young, working as a World War II military, medical, church, and Headstart secretary.

Norma instinctively put her family’s and friends’ needs before her own and recognized even the smallest kindness with sincere gratitude. She will be remembered for her loving heart, her ability to see the good in everyone, and her gift of finding humor in any situation. Norma’s caring and generous spirit has always been and will continue to be a model and cohesive bond for her children and grandchildren.

Surviving are three sons, James Roger Forbes and wife Claudia of Oneonta, New York, Raymond Lawrence Forbes and wife Traci of Manning, S.C., Mark Allen Forbes and wife Lynn of Columbia, S.C.; two daughters, Linda Laine Lee of Anchorage, Alaska, and Roberta Jewell Jackson and husband Dr. Raymond Jackson of Richmond, Kentucky; a daughter-in-law, Lorrene Forbes of Kenai, Alaska; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, David Wayne Forbes; a daughter, Janyce Leanna Forbes Brannum; and eight brothers and sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday in the Chapel of the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Dick Broomall officiating.

Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be her sons, grandsons, James Owen Forbes, Liam Owen Forbes, Duncan Ross Forbes, Bryan Douglas Lee, Christopher Adam Jackson, Spencer Hamilton Jackson, Ethan Thomas Forbes, Adam James Forbes, Raymond Marcus Forbes, and great-grandsons, Christopher Parker Jackson and Patrick Logan Jackson.

Norma’s family also recognizes with special thanks those friends who have given our mother such love, joy and faithfulness through out her life.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. Sunday at the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home and other times in the family home.

Woodrow Wallace

1926-2003

Mayesville, S.C.

Woodrow Wallace 77, husband of Margaret Atkinson Wallace, died Tuesday, July 15, 2003 at the Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Chesterfield County, he was a son of the late Jim Wallace and the late Della Mae Caughman Wallace.

Mr. Wallace was a member of Ashwood Nazarene Church and retired from Santee Print Works.

Surviving are his wife of Bishopville; two sons, Willie L. Poole of Sumter and Albert Eugene Poole of Bishopville; three daughters, Margaret Paris of Bishopville, Faye Wright of Lamar and Carolyn Allen of Sumter and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Lloyd Wallace and Floyd Wallace.

Funeral services will be held at 2 P.M. Thursday in the Chapel of the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with Rev. T. W. Mitchell officiating.

Burial will be in Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Ashwood Nazarene Church, 2145 Green Lane, Bishopville, S. C. 29010.

Olin S. Avin

1919-2003

Olin Sanders Avin, 84, died Tuesday, July 15, 2003 at a local nursing center.

Born in Pinewood, he was the son of the late Lucious E. Avin and the late Rosa Griffin Avin.

Mr. Avin was a member of Bethel Baptist Church and was a retired, self-employed farmer. He served in the United States Army, 329th Harbor Craft Company during World War II.

Surviving are two sisters, Louise A. Ward and Mary Camilla Carson, both of Sumter; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Perry M. Avin, James R. Avin, Eddie M. Avin, and Orrie T. Avin; and a sister, Myrtle Broach.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday in the Chapel of the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Laverne Hancock officiating.

Burial will be in Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery.

Nephews will serve as pallbearers

The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home, and other times at the home of his sister, 1801 Wardland Road.

Memorials may be made to Bethel Baptist Church, 2401 Bethel Church Road, Sumter, S.C. 29150.

Caroline Cecelia Yates

1957-2003

C. Cecelia Yates, 46, died Tuesday, July 22, 2003 at the Orangeburg Nursing Home in Orangeburg, S.C. after a lengthy illness.

Born in Sumter, she was the daughter of Colleen Holland Yates and the late Ansley “Bubba” Lee Yates.

She was a member of St. Anne Catholic Church and attended Winthrop College. She was a graduate of Florence-Darlington Nursing School.

Surviving are her mother of Sumter; her maternal grandmother, Eileen Holland of Sumter; a brother, Ernest F. Yates of Sumter; a sister, Cricket Yates Stewart and her husband Craig of Alexandria, Virginia; two nieces, Ansley Stewart and Lee Stewart; and three nephews, Craig Stewart, Patrick Yates, and Andrew Yates.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Ansley Yates.

Memorial services will be held at 4:00 P.M. Friday in the Chapel of the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home.

Private graveside services will be held at St. Lawrence Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the home of her mother.
