Born in Glouster, N.J., to Stanley Sr. and Mae Miller, he died August 9, 2004. Surviving: wife, Alice Miller; children, Nancy Boling, Gloria Smith, Butch Miller; grandchildren, Kim, Kenny, Kullen, Seth, Drew, Lindsey, Justin, Jarrett; great-grandchildren.

Helen Roberson

LAURINBURG, N.C. — Services for Helen Lockey Roberson, 57, formerly of McColl, S.C., will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday (visitation 6-8 tonight) at Eastside Baptist Church, McColl, with burial in Beaver Dam Cemetery. Richard Boles Funeral Service, Laurinburg, is in charge. She died August 9, 2004. Surviving are children, Dave Hodge, Tammy Dean; sisters, Sara McCoy, Peggy Jackson; six grandchildren.

Timothy Merritt

DILLON — Services for Timothy Ray Merritt, 44, will be 5 p.m. today at Trinity Holiness Church, where he was a member, with burial in Greenlawn Cemetery. Born in Mullins to David and Dorothy Cox Merritt, he died August 8, 2004. Surviving: mother; siblings, Jackie Hunt, Susie Campbell, Becky Mincey, Mitchell, Allan, Johnny Merritt; special nephews, Alex Merritt, Eric Campbell; aunt, Reatha Herring.

Julia Williams

HOPKINS — Funeral service for Mrs. Julia “Cook” Mckenzie Williams of 141 Railside Rd., Hopkins, S.C. will be held Thursday, August 12, 2004 at St. John Baptist Church, Hopkins with Interment in Church Cemetery. Visitation will be held Wednesday, August 11, 2004 at JP Holley Funeral Home Garners Ferry Rd. Chapel.

Julia “Cook” Mckenzie Williams was born on December 13, 1960, to Charles Mckenzie Sr., and Julie Coles Mckenzie. On Saturday, August 7, 2004, our dearly beloved “Cook” quietly and peacefully answered God’s beckoning call to come home.

At an early age Julia was baptized and joined Zion Damascus #2 Baptist Church of Hopkins, South Carolina, and later joined St. John Baptist Church, Hopkins, South Carolina, where she served faithfully until her health began to fail.

Julia was a graduate of Lower Richland High School, Class of 1978. She was employed with Benedict College as a Financial Aid Counselor. For many years, Julia was a devoted employee of T.J. Maxx as a Sales Associate- a job she dearly loved.

Julia was a kind and loving person to everyone that came in contact with her. Even through her extended illness, there was always that beautiful smile that was serene and represented the presence of the Lord.

Julia leaves to cherish loving memories: parents of the home; son, Robert A. Williams of Hopkins, SC; granddaughter, Trinity Alexis Williams of Columbia, SC; sister, Deborah A. Mckenzie of Columbia, SC; brother, Charles B. Mckenzie of Hopkins, SC; adopted brother, Fred Coles of Columbia, SC; two adopted sisters, Brenda L. (Pelham) Myers and Suzette (Stanlely) Cheeseboro of Hopkins, SC; two uncles, David (Gladys) Coles of Bridgeport, CT and Lewis (Mary) Coles of Paterson, NJ; five aunts, Mattie Mathis, Lottie Coles, Eliza (James) Buggs, and Mary L. Dixon, all of Paterson, NJ; and Annie L. Mckenzie of Hopkins, SC; a host of nieces, nephews, friends and other sorrowing relatives whom will miss her dearly.

Kenny Dick Sr.

FORT MILL — Services for Kenneth Lee “Kenny” Dick Sr., 50, are 2 p.m. Thursday (visitation 6-8 tonight) at Riverview Presbyterian Church. Wolfe Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Stanley Co., N.C., to Truett and Betty M. Dick, he died August 9, 2004. Surviving: wife, Cindy B. Dick; father; children, Kenley Dick Jr., Jennifer Biggers, Joy Jarrett; sisters, Diane Carter, Sandi Ruch; grandchildren, Makayla Biggers, Matthew Jarrett.

Anna Hayes

CHARLESTON — Services for Anna Elizabeth Mitchell Hayes, 81, widow of John Hayes, are 11 am Thursday: Wesley UMC; burial: Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Charleston; viewing: noon-2 p.m. today at Marshel’s Wright-Donaldson Home for Funerals, Beaufort, and 4 p.m.-hour of service at Dorothy’s Home for Funerals. Born in Charleston to Ezekiel and Daisy Mitchell, she died August 8, 2004.

Mildred Hayes

FLORENCE — Mildred Strickland Hayes, 65, died Monday, August 9, 2004, at her residence after an illness.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, August 12, 2004, at Waters-Powell Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Florence Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

She was born in Marion, SC, a daughter of the late Sprunt and Gertrude Landrum Strickland. She was predeceased by her first husband, A.J. Foust.

Mrs. Hayes was a floor supervisor for Electro-Motive and was also employed by Phillips 66. She was a member of Hoffmeyer Road Baptist Church and the Young at Heart Sunday School Class.

Survivors include three sons, Terry C. (Christine) Foust of N. Augusta, SC, Mickey Lee Foust and Phillip D. Foust, both of Florence; a sister, Hazel T. Northcutt of Columbia; three grandsons, Brad Christopher Foust, David Jason Foust, and Patrick Jess Foust Rogers; four granddaughters, Crystal Lynne Foust, Kimberly Lee Foust, Jessica Lee Foust, and Mindy Marie Foust.

She was predeceased by a brother, Jimmy Lee Strickland.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 950 48th Ave., N, Suite 101, Myrtle Beach, SC 29577.

ROCK HILL — Services for Mary Lou Gregory Baker, 90, widow of Ross Baker, 3 p.m. Thursday at Park Baptist Church; burial in Laurelwood Cemetery; visitation 7-8:30 tonight at Greene Funeral Home, Northwest. Born in Rock Hill to James and Essie Ferguson Gregory, she died August 10, 2004. Surviving are children, James Baker, Bobbie Faulkner; brother, Earle Gregory; grandchildren; great-grandchildren.

Charlie Belton

COLUMBIA — Services for Charlie “CB” Belton, 75, veteran, will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at St. Mark Baptist Church; burial in church cemetery. Russell-McCutchen Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Fairfield Co. to Willie and Fannie Belton Johnson, he died August 7, 2004. Surviving are his son, Kenith Belton.

CORDOVA — Annie Adelle Summers Edwards, 92, died Monday. Funeral is 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, August 11, 2004 at Cattle Creek United Methodist Church near Rowesville with burial in the church Cemetery, directed by Thompson Funeral Home in Orangeburg.

GLOVERVILLE — Services for Adelle Knowles Hall, beautician, widow of Ernest Knowles and Henry Hall, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Hatcher Funeral Home (visitation 6-8 p.m. Thursday) with burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Born in Wadley, Ala., to John and Cora Smith Thrift, she died Aug. 10, 2004. Surviving are children, William Knowles, Geneva Van Buren, Barbara Eubanks, Evelyn Sasnett.

William Hopkins Sr.

COLUMBIA — Services for William Earl Hopkins Sr., of 610 Blanding Street, 1 p.m. Thursday at Zion Baptist Church, 801 Washington Street with burial in Palmetto Cemetery. Born in Columbia, he was the son of the late Jesse and Lillian William Hopkins.

He was a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School, Class of 1937, and a World War II veteran. He worked as a master brick mason for over 70 years.

Surviving are his wife, Benzina Hopkins; son, William (Jonell) Hopkins Jr.; daughters, Lillian Hopkins and Vivian (Lonzie) Reese; brother, James Williams; five grands and five great-grandchildren.

James Hallingquest Sr.

BARNWELL — Services for James Hallingquest Sr., widower of Juanita Hallingquest, will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Bethany Baptist Church, Blackville with burial in Hope Memorial Park, Inc. Visitation is 7-8 tonight at Lebby Funeral Home. Born in Barnwell Co. to Preston Sr. and Rosa Nelson Hallingquest, he died August 8, 2004. Surviving are six sons; two daughters; one brother; other relatives.

Eoline Werts

SILVERSTREET — Eoline S. Werts, 96, formerly of Silverstreet, died Monday, August 9, 2004 at White Oak Manor.

Miss Werts was born on February 16, 1908 in Newberry County, a daughter of the late Arthur P. and Mamie B. Schumpert. She was a graduate of Winthrop College and was a retired public school teacher. She was a member of New Chapel United Methodist Church and the U.M.W. and she was a former Sunday School teacher.

Miss Werts is survived by a sister, Lilly W. Palmer of Columbia; and two nephews, Arthur P. Werts, III and R. Daniel Werts.

Funeral services for Eoline Werts will be conducted at 3:00 P.M. Thursday at the Whitaker Funeral Home by the Rev. Hugh Bickley. Interment will be in Rosemont Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to New Chapel United Methodist Church, c/o Julie Lake, 162 Pine Meadow Road, Newberry SC 29108.

Whitaker Funeral Home, 1704 College Street, Newberry, is assisting the family.
