Martha Lark

GREENWOOD — Services for Martha Lark, 62, 2 p.m. Wednesday (visitation 6-8 tonight) at Harley Funeral Home; burial: Oakbrook Memorial Park. Born in Laurens to Woodrow and Ruby Bagwell, she died Aug. 16, 2004. Surviving: husband, Colon; daughters, Sherry King, Susan Sampson; siblings, Shirley Shealy, Mavis Barger, Carol Moore, Dotsy Davis, Judy McClain, Libby Price, Steve Madden; grandchildren.

James McKeown Sr.

CHESTER — The funeral for James Greer “Jim” McKeown, Sr. of 108 Pine St., a retired newspaper publisher, will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, Aug. 18, from the First Baptist Church of Chester with his pastor, the Rev. Clay Waldrip, officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Mr. McKeown, 74, died early Monday, Aug. 16, 2004, at his home after a period of declining health.

Born in Chester on Jan. 31, 1930, he was a son of the late Col. Dewey Miller McKeown, Sr. and the late Mrs. Sarah Fleming McKeown. He was the husband of Mrs. Irene Jourdan McKeown.

Educated at Chester High School, the University of South Carolina, and Palmetto Military Academy, he was a retired officer in the South Carolina Army National Guard and a former Commanding Officer of Company B, 4th Battalion, 118th Infantry unit in Chester. He retired from the 4th Battalion Staff as a major in 1970 with a 20-year service record.

Mr. McKeown spent 43 years in the newspaper business, first with the former Chester Reporter and then with the Chester News & Reporter. He served initially as advertising manager of The Chester Reporter and was instrumental in merging The Reporter with the former Chester News to form the present day News & Reporter in 1971. He was general manager of the combined publication until he was named publisher. He retired on April 1, 1995.

He was responsible for much of the growth in the paper and its many state press awards over the years. He was formerly active in the South Carolina Press Association, which he served several terms on its board of directors.

Mr. McKeown was a member of the First Baptist Church of Chester and was formerly active in the Chester Jaycees.

In addition to his wife, Irene, he is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Ruth M. White and her husband, Francis White, of Newberry; three sons, James G. (Jim) McKeown, Jr. and his wife, Pam McDow McKeown, of Kershaw, Joseph Frazer (Joe) McKeown and his wife, Mary Ann McKeown of Chester, and Jason Lee Yarborough and his wife, Joy Smith Yarborough, also of Chester; five grandchildren, Sara McKeown, Morgan Yarborough, Jason Yarborough, Greer McKeown and Josh Sloan; a sister, Miss Betty Jean McKeown of Chester; and three brothers, Harold A. (Mac) McKeown of Pendleton, William Ross (Bill) McKeown of Charlotte and L. Don McKeown of Chester.

It is suggested that memorials be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 518, Chester, SC 29706.

The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 Tuesday evening at Barron Funeral Home.

Jonathan McKown

GAFFNEY — The Honorable Jonathan Zachariah McKown, 86, of 502 S. Petty St., died August 14, 2004 in Spartanburg Hospital for Restorative Care. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. August 18, 2004 at Limestone Presbyterian Church officiated by the Rev. Dan Youngblood. Family will receive friends in the church parlor Wednesday after the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Limestone Presbyterian Church, 101 E. Jefferies St., Gaffney, SC 29340. Shuford-Hatcher Funeral Home is in charge.

Judge McKown was a life-long resident of Cherokee County. He graduated from the University of South Carolina where he also received his law degree in 1941. He served in the Army Air Corps in World War II and was stationed in Burma. In 1947, he earned a master’s in Law from Duke University Law School. He practiced law for 34 years in Gaffney before being elected Circuit Court Judge by the S.C. General Assembly in 1981. During his private practice of law, he served as Cherokee County Attorney and as attorney for the City of Gaffney. For three years starting in 1951, he stepped out of his field to serve as the Superintendent of Education for Cherokee County. He also served on the S.C. State Highway Commission.

He was a longtime member of Limestone Presbyterian Church and for years, taught the Men’s Bible Class.

Survivors: wife, Patricia C. McKown of the home; daughter, Judge Ann Elizabeth McKown and husband, Daniel C. Hudgins of Durham, N.C.; sons: Jonathan Zachariah McKown, Jr., New York City, Mark Albert McKown and wife, Sonja, Salt Lake City, Utah; sister: Olive E. McKown, Gaffney; stepchildren: Angela Winesett Watkins, Ginny Winesett Callum, Patricia Jo Winesett Collins, Garrett Winesett; grandchildren: Zachariah James McKown and Kallie Ann McKown; step-grandchildren: Rosa Garrett, Eli, Luke, Joe and Greene.

Preceded in death by brothers: George W., Guy L. and Edward L. McKown also sisters: Ruth McKown Snuggs and French McKown Spear.

Seanie Ray

COLUMBIA — Visitation for Seanie Martin Ray, 75, will be held from 4 to 9 o’clock Wednesday, August 18, 2004 at the home of her son, William H. Ray, III of 160 Glenshannon Drive.

Mrs. Ray died Saturday, August 14, 2004. Born in Kanapolis, NC, she was a daughter of the late Jesse Hall Martin and Dorothy M. Scott. She was a graduate of Olympia High School and attended Asheville-Buncombe Tech. Mrs. Ray was employed for several years with the J.C. Penney Department stores of Columbia. She was of the Lutheran faith.

Surviving are her sons; William H. Ray, III, and wife Brenda, Geoffery O. Ray and wife, Priscilla all of Columbia. Also surviving are her grandchildren; William H. Ray, IV and Stanley Bryce Blair of Pickens and a great-grandchild, Lillian Elizabeth Ray of Columbia.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to The Columbia Marionette Theatre, 401 Laurel Street, Columbia, SC 29201. Shives Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Doris Morgan

COWARD — Services for Doris Smith Morgan, 78, widow of James Morgan, are 11 a.m. Wednesday at Sand Hill Free Will Baptist Church; burial in Mossy Grove Cemetery. Visitation is 7-9 tonight at Brockington Funeral Home, Lake City. Born in Coward to Charlie Smith and Ilah Smith McGee, she died Aug. 15, 2004. Surviving: children, Cheryl, Charles Morgan; grandchildren, Renee Mitchell, Brittany, Darren Morgan.

Mable Rembert

CASSATT — Services with burial for Mable C. Rembert, 74, 2 p.m. Wednesday at Canty Hill Baptist Church. Haile’s Funeral Home, Camden, is in charge. Born to Joseph Sr. and Minnie Charles, she died Aug. 14, 2004. Surviving: husband, Mitchell Rembert; daughters, Shirley Salmond, Minnie James, Maggie Lee; grandchildren, Darrell, Dale, J’von, Kendra, Walter III, Lacey, Kenneth Jr., Tonya; 11 great-grandchildren.

Alice Martin

CONWAY — Alice Cribb Martin, age 75, wife of the late Harry P. Martin, died August 15, 2004, at her residence following an illness.

Mrs. Martin was born in Conway, a daughter of the late Richard and Girtha Green Cribb. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Conway where she was a member of the John McCutcheon Class and the Stilley Walsh Circle. She was also a member of the Eastern Star. The family is thankful for the special love and care provided by so many caregivers and friends.

Mrs. Martin is survived by two sons, Paul and Craig Martin both of Conway, two daughters, Patricia Lee and Nancy McCord, both of Conway, two sisters, Violet Grainger of Bucksport, Helen Floyd of Galivants Ferry, three sister-in-laws, Ethel Cribb of Conway Margaret Flowers of Conway, Ruby Cribb of Columbia, four grandsons, Charles Dorman, Shawn Dorman, Bryce McCord, Luke Jordan all of Conway, and four granddaughters, Julie Martin, Jesalyn Martin, Alyson McCord, Mary Chelsey McCord, all of Conway.

Funeral service will be held 2:30 PM Wednesday, August 18, 2004 at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ben Barnett, Rev. David Rickert, and Rev. Carl Harris officiating. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 PM Tuesday at the funeral home. In memory of their mothers love for God and the fellowman, the family wishes that memorials be made to one of the following, Mercy Hospice of Horry County, PO Box 50640 Myrtle Beach, SC 29579 or to the First United Methodist Church of Conway’s Hut Bible Class, P.O. Ada Johnson

RIDGEWAY — Funeral services for Ada Fay Rowe Johnson will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday, August 18, 2004, at the Winnsboro Church of God conducted by Bishop D.L. Sellers. Burial will follow in Columbia Memorial Garden. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Pope Funeral Home of Winnsboro.

Mrs. Johnson, 72, was called home to be with the Lord on Sunday, August 15, 2004.

Born in Blythewood, May 1, 1932, she was a daughter of the late Herbert Rowe and Sola Bell Marthers Rowe.

She was a loving wife to Jimmy Johnson of the home and mother to Christian Nolff Sr. of Dearborn, Michigan and Alba Fay Owens and Patricia Truesdale, both of Blythewood and step-son, Kenneth Johnson of Winnsboro; grandmother to Christian, Jr., Rodney, Susan and Matthew Nolff, Tracy Owens Neese, Nicole and Kristin Owens, Jessica and Breanna Truesdale, Ryan and Keegan Johnson; five great-grandchildren; sister of Carl Rowe of Ridgeway, Joe Rowe of Nashville, TN, James Rowe of Tampa, FL and Doris Fulmer of Chapin; and a special daughter in Christ, Judy Ragin of Blythewood.

Johnnie Mae Hudson

WINNSBORO — Funeral services for Johnnie Mae Neely Hudson will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 18, 2004, at the Stephen Greene Baptist Church conducted by Rev. James P. Blackwelder. Burial will follow in Royal Pines Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Pope Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Stephen Greene Baptist Church, Winnsboro, SC 29180 or to St. Francis Hospice, 414 Pettigru St., Greenville, SC 29601-9887.

Mrs. Hudson, 86, died Sunday, August 15, 2004.

Born in Blythewood, May 7, 1918, she was the daughter of the late John Thomas and Hattie Broome Neeley and the widow of Curtis G. Hudson.

She had worked at Fairfield Manufacturing Company and was a long-standing member of Stephen Greene Baptist Church and the Lucille Mixon Sunday School class.

Surviving are sons, James G. Hudson, of Taylors, S.C. and Thomas M. Hudson of Jacksonville, Florida; four grandchildren, James A. Hudson of Lawrenceville, Georgia, John C. Hudson of Boiling Springs, S.C., Thomas M. Hudson, Jr. of Jacksonville, Florida and Kristen H. Esker of Mount Pleasant, S.C. and three great-grandchildren, James Coleman Hudson, Matthew Charles Hudson and Sarah Elizabeth Esker.

Richard Forrest

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Richard C. Forrest, 60, of Jacksonville, FL, formerly of Columbia, SC, died Friday, Aug. 6, 2004, at his home. A native of South Carolina, he was born September 10, 1943, son of the late Thomas Clyde Forrest and the late Sybil Snyder Shaffer. He was a graduate of Camden Military Academy and attended Old Dominion University and the University of South Carolina. He had retired from a family business.

Surviving are one son, Richard Thomas Forrest and wife, Sally Forrest, of Lexington, SC; one daughter, Susan Forrest Gaubert and husband, Cliff Gaubert, of Spartanburg, SC; two granddaughters, Cameron and Evan Gaubert; three grandsons, Alex and Stephen Forrest, and Davis Gaubert. He also leaves behind his former wife of 33 years, Donna Forrest.

Visitation will be Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2004, at 6:00 PM, at Seven Oaks Presbyterian Church, Columbia, SC. A memorial service will follow at 6:30 PM, officiated by Dr. L. Franklin Fant. Burial will be private at Bush River Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, 520 Gervais St., Columbia, SC 29201, or the Carolina Children’s Home, 3201 Trenholm Rd., Columbia, SC 29204. Arrangements entrusted to: A.B. Carleton Whittaker

ROCK HILL — A graveside service for Carleton Lyle Whittaker, 88, will be held at 2 p.m. today in Forest Hills Cemetery. Greene Funeral Home, Northwest, is in charge. Born in Easton, Maine, to Burt and Ethel Hatch Whittaker, he died Aug. 14, 2004. He was a Methodist. Surviving are sons, Dennis, Gary Whittaker; grandchildren, Pam Rector, Scott Whittaker; great-grandchildren, Megan, Will Rector, Laci Whittaker.

Edna Turnipseed

WEST COLUMBIA — Service for Edna Thornton Turnipseed, 87, will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Gervais Street Chapel, Columbia, with burial in Elmwood Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to Greene Street United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Turnipseed, wife of the late Edward Holly Turnipseed, died Sunday, August 15, 2004. Born in Columbia, she was the daughter of the late Charlie and Suzanna Rabon Thornton.

Surviving are daughter, Mary Elizabeth Turnipseed of West Columbia; and many nieces and nephews.

Sarah Smith

NORTH AUGUSTA — Services for Sarah Jean Smith are 10 a.m. today at Hatcher Funeral Home; burial at 1 p.m. in Magnolia Baptist Church Cemetery, Gibson, Ga. Hatcher Funeral Home, Langley, is in charge. Born in Jefferson Co., Ga., to Rogers and Agnes A. Johnson, she died Aug. 14, 2004. Surviving: husband, Bill Smith Sr.; children, Toni Fennell, Terri Lyons, Tina Kuhn, Billy Jr.; 2 sisters; 2 brothers; 9 grandchildren.

Ruth Baxter

CHESTERFIELD, Va. — Graveside services for Ruth Pedings Baxter, 45, of Chesterfield, VA, formerly of West Columbia, will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 18, 2004, at Woodridge Memorial Park, officiated by Rev. Sandra Stevens Poirel. The family will receive friends at the home of Patsy S. Pedings. Memorials may be made to Providence Presbyterian Church, 1112 Hummingbird Dr., West Columbia, SC 29169 or to the charity of one’s choice.

Mrs. Baxter died August 15, 2004. Born in Columbia, she was the daughter of Patsy Stuck Pedings, of West Columbia, and the late James W. Pedings. Mrs. Baxter graduated from Erskine College and was recognized in Who's Who Among American Colleges and Universities in 1981.

Surviving, along with her mother, are her husband, Larry E. Baxter, of Chesterfield, VA; daughter, Samantha R. Baxter; and son, Wade E. Baxter, both of the home; brother, Paul R. Pedings of Cayce; and grandfather, Charles B. Stuck, of West Columbia.
