Theda Bennett

VARNVILLE — Mrs. Theda Cook Bennett, 83, of 72 Lightsey St. in Varnville, died Sunday evening in the Hampton Regional Medical Center after an extended illness.

Born May 25, 1921 in Hampton County, she was the daughter of the late Alfred Cook and Annie Dubois Cook. She was a homemaker, a member of the Hampton Church of God and was the widow of Cecil Marlowe Benett, Sr.

She is survived by 2 sons: Cecil M. Bennett, Jr. of Ehrhardt and Marvin T. Bennett of Varnville; 2 daughters: Geraldine Sauls White and Juanita Polk, both of Varnville; 2 sisters: Geneva Sullivan of Fairfax and Betty Kneece of Summerville. There are 12 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 3 PM in the chapel of Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home in Hampton, conducted by Rev. Tim Latham and Rev. David Schaffer. Burial will follow in the Varnville Cemetery.

Friends may call at the chapel from 6 until 9 PM on Tuesday evening and until the hour of services on Wednesday. The family will be at 181 Chanel Drive in Varnville.

Charles Boykin Jr.

CHARLESTON — Charles Valk Boykin, Jr., of Charleston, S.C. died Sunday August 15, 2004 at Bishop Gadsden Retirement Community. He was 88 years old. Born in Charleston, SC, to Charles Valk Boykin and Sadie Allen Boykin, June 22, 1916. The senior Boykin became President of the Charleston Shipbuilding and Dry-dock Company on the Cooper River waterfront, where young Charlie learned to sail and dreamed of building ships.

Mr. Boykin, Jr. attended the College of Charleston for one year and the University of SC for two years. After his father’s death he sold “The Teal,” his Regatta winning sailboat, to pay his tuition to University of Michigan. He worked three jobs and graduated in 1939 with a degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. He was employed by the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company from 1939 thru 1969, attaining top management of the sheetmetal division with 7000 men under his supervision. During W.W.II, many large ships were built there. The Battleship: Indiana: aircraft carriers: Ranger Enterprise and the Yorktown in Charleston Harbor and luxury liners: The United States and The America; the Nuclear submarine U.S.S. John C. Calhoun and many more

He later built huge barges for FMC Corporation in Portland, Oregon. In 1979 he accepted an offer from Sea-Land Services Company to be their top representatives during construction of four container vessels in Mitsubishi Shipyard in Nagasaki, Japan.

Mr. Boykin was a man of integrity and deep loyalties. He was active in the communities and churches where he lived. He was Vestryman at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Hampton, VA and St. Philip’s Episcopal Church in Charleston. He gave generously to The Boykin Scholarships at the College of Charleston and The University of Michigan which have benefited students interested in Marine Architecture and Engineering yearly since 1987. His memberships have included The Huguenot Society, The St. Cecilia Society, The Carolina Yacht Club and The Supper Club, and The Country Club of Charleston.

He is survived by his wife Esther Davis Taliaferro Boykin, formerly of Columbia; nephews; Arthur Ravenel of Mt. Pleasant, SC and Edward Ravenel of Hollywood, SC; nieces Elizabeth Harrigan (Mrs. Anthony) of Arlington, VA and Rosamond Bee (Mrs. S.S.) of Rockville, SC, his sister-in-law, Mrs. George S. King of Columbia, SC.

Mr. Boykin was preceded in death by his first wife, Vivian Currier: two sisters, Mary Allen Ravenel (Mrs. Arthur) and Ann Elizabeth Crist (Mrs. James F.).

The relatives and friends of Mr. Boykin are invited to attend the graveside services in Magnolia Cemetery, Wednesday, August 18, 2004 at two o’clock.

Julia Beckham

LANCASTER — Services for Julia Pride Beckham, 97, retired teacher, will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Douglas Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Visitation is 7-9 tonight at Mahaffey Funeral Home. Born in Lancaster Co. to Halcot and Mary Gooch Beckham, she died Aug. 16, 2004. Surviving are sister, Gladys Moffatt; nephews, Henry Beckham, Jimmy Culp; nieces, Emily McLane, Carolyn Ireland, Jan Duke.

Kathleen Whitaker

SWANSEA — Kathleen E. Whitaker, 76, of Swansea, died Sunday, August 15, 2004.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 18, 2004, at Calvary United Methodist Church with Rev. Bruce Rucker and Rev. Diane Morehead officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The casket will be placed in the church at 10 a.m.

Mrs. Whitaker was born in Newberry County, SC, a daughter of the late Harry and Gladys Scarborough Price. She was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church. She was a retired seamstress.

Survivors include her husband, Harmon H. Whitaker of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Robbie Hall of Livingston; sons and daughters-in-law, James H. and Kathy Whitaker of Lexington, Wayne H. and Ola Enlow of Georgetown, FL; grandchildren, Erika Lambright, Sean Enlow, Casey Bolin, Audrey Whitaker, Brady Hall; great-grandchildren, Jacob Bolin and Bayley Enlow.

The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at Culler-McAlhany Funeral Home in North and other times at the home of Rev. and Mrs. Robbie Hall, 1342 Silver Springs Road, Livingston.

Memorials may be made to Calvary United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund.

William Braxton

ALLENDALE — Mr. William Braxton, the husband of the late Barbra Ann Braxton, died Saturday morning at Mattie C. Hall Nursing Center in Aiken after an extended illness. He was 66.

Mr. Braxton was born June 11, 1938 the son of the late Jack Braxton. He was a veteran in the National Guard and a retired auto mechanic.

Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Maybell Braxton of Hampton; 2 sons, Billy Braxton Jr. and wife Bonnie of Old Bridge, NJ, and Boyd Braxton of Fort Lauderdale, FL; 3 sisters, Delores Reynolds and husband Richard of Allendale, Gloria McDanial and husband Jack of Allendale and Pat Godley and husband Syril of Hampton; 3 brothers, Ronald Braxton of Hampton, Albert Braxton and wife Gail of Chattanooga, TN and Frank Braxton of Varnville. He was predeceased by a brother, Norman Braxton. There are 3 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday morning at 11:00 a.m. at the chapel of Smith-Rhoden Funeral Home with burial following at Swallow Savannah Cemetery. Visitation was held Monday night from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home. Smith-Rhoden Funeral Home of Allendale is charge of arrangements.

Syrion Tyler

COLUMBIA — A graveside service for Syrion Leymond Tyler will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in St. John Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation is 4-9 p.m. today at J.P. Holley Funeral Home. Born in Columbia to Leroy and Deborah Tyler, he died August 15, 2004. Surviving are his siblings, Brandon, Demetri, Xaiver, Verneice, Auvenette Tyler; niece, Asiana Tyler.

Janice Smith

WEST COLUMBIA — Services for Janice Trammell Smith, 61, of West Columbia, will be held at 11am Wednesday in Broadacres Baptist Church, officiated by Rev. Kevin Phillips. Burial will follow at Southland Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6-8pm Tuesday at Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington. Memorials may be made to Tri-County Hospice or to Broadacres Baptist Church, 2350 Taylor Rd., Cayce, SC 29033.

Mrs. Smith died Monday, August 16, 2004. Born in Newberry, she was the daughter of Mary Baker Trammell and the late William Mack Trammell. Mrs. Smith was a member of Broadacres Baptist Church and was retired from the University of South Carolina. Additionally, she was a member of Women of the Moose, Cayce Chapter.

Janice was a loving wife, mother, and daughter. Surviving, in addition to her mother of Newberry, are her husband, Roger Lee Smith of West Columbia; son and daughter-in-law, Roger Michael and Katie Fort Smith of Cayce; brothers, Roger Dale Trammell and Charles Dean Trammell, both of Newberry.

Miriam Thompson

WALTERBORO — Services for Miriam Beth “Beatrice” Thompson are 4:30 p.m. today at Parker-Rhoden Funeral Home with burial in Live Oak Cemetery. Born in Colleton Co. to Gary Sr. and Corinne Jones Thompson, she died August 8, 2004. She was a member of Living Word Ministries and attended Columbia College. Surviving: mother; siblings, Patricia Eaton, Gary Jr., William Thompson; nieces; nephews.

Betty Rives

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH — Betty Day Rives, 74, of North Myrtle Beach, died Friday, August 13, 2004 at her home.

She was born on May 23, 1930 in Centerpost, Ga., a daughter of the late Henry and Bertie Kilgore Day.

Loving and caring for her husband and family was the most important thing in her life. She was a member of Ocean Drive Presbyterian Church and very active with committees of the church. She was an avid tennis player.

Mrs. Rives is survived by her husband, Robert F. “Bob” Rives, Jr. of North Myrtle Beach; son, Scott Rives of Lexington; daughter, Victoria R. Coughlin of Charlotte, NC; sisters, Frankie Davis and Shirley Day, both of Chattanooga, TN; four grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Robert F. Rives III.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at Petersen Presbyterian Church, 8131 Brookfield Road, Columbia. Inurnment will be in Greenlawn Cemetery in Columbia.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 21 at Ocean Drive Presbyterian Church, North Myrtle Beach.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Ocean Drive Presbyterian Church, 410 Sixth Avenue South, North Myrtle Beach, SC 29582.

Lee Funeral Home and Crematory of Little River/North Myrtle Beach is serving the family.

Jack Russell

MCBEE — Funeral services for Jack Leland Russell, 40, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 17, 2004 at Union United Methodist Church. The Rev. Roger Dodds will officiate with burial in the church cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Monday, August 16, 2004 from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. Russell died Saturday, August 14, 2004. Born in Tacoma, WA, he was a son of Joel Nathaniel and Shelby Jean Selph Russell. He was a loving husband, father and brother.

Surviving are his wife, Nancy Johnson Russell of McBee, SC; daughter, Amber Russell of McBee, SC; sisters, Joanne Hopkins of Manning, SC, Jill Russell of Columbia, SC, Sandy Noonan of Columbia, SC; brothers, Billy Russell of McBee, SC, Joel N. Russell, Jr. of Columbia, SC; 26 nieces and nephews; three great-nieces and two great-nephews.

Rev. James Richardson

LUGOFF — Services and burial for Rev. James T. Richardson, 75 2 p.m. Thursday: Unity UMC. Hailes’ Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Lugoff to Spencer and Elizabeth Richardson, he died Aug. 13, 2004. Surviving: wife, Almarie; children, James, Jerromye Richardson, Debra Canty, Myrtle Grant, Shirley Usher, RavShanne Thompson; sisters, Maybelle Hollis, Louise Williams, Brenda Register, Helen Dillard.

James Pressly Jr.

GREENVILLE — James Boyce Pressly, Jr., attorney with Haynsworth, Sinkler, Boyd, P.A., of Greenville, Columbia, Charleston, and Florence, died Sunday, August 15, 2004, in Greenville, South Carolina. Born in Birmingham, Alabama in 1946, he was the son of Dr. and Mrs. James Boyce Pressly.

Mr. Pressly graduated from Christ School, Arden, North Carolina in 1964. He then received his B.A. from Vanderbilt University in 1968, and his J.D. from the University of South Carolina Law School in 1971. After serving as clerk to the Hon. Clement F. Haynsworth, Jr., Chief Judge, 4th Circuit Court of Appeals, 1971-72, he began his practice with the law firm of Haynsworth, Marion, McKay and Guerard, now Haynsworth Sinkler Boyd, P.A., where he was still in practice. He practiced in the U.S. District Court for the District of South Carolina, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit, and the courts of South Carolina. Mr. Pressly was a member of the SC Bar, Greenville County Bar, and SC Defense Trial Lawyers Association. He was also a Fellow, American College of Trial Lawyers; Member, Fellows of the American Bar Foundation; Member, South Carolina Supreme Court, Board of Commissioners on Grievances and Discipline; Member, Client Security Fund of the South Carolina Bar; and Member, American Board of Trial Advocates, positions reserved for those attorneys who have distinguished themselves in the litigation field and are dedicated to maintaining and improving standards of trial practice and the ethics of the profession.

Having practiced in the area of toxic tort and products liability for over 30 years, Mr. Pressly was a recognized leader in the field. In addition to representing various defendants in asbestos litigation, he also served as the national coordinating counsel for a large construction company in over 1,000 cases nationwide dealing with alleged exposure to asbestos. In this role, he headed the team which coordinated various aspects of the litigation nationwide. He tried toxic tort cases in state and federal courts in ten states and the Virgin Islands. In addition, he was a frequent lecturer on toxic tort issues for Defense Research Institute and other national groups.

Mr. Pressly was actively involved in various community, religious, and educational organizations. He served as Special Gifts Chairman while on the board of the United Way of Greenville. In addition, he served the community as a member of the Board of Directors of the following organizations: Greenville Chamber of Commerce, Metropolitan Arts Council, YMCA Metropolitan, Goodwill Industries, Theatre on the Green, Roper Mountain Science Center, Family Counseling, and Opportunity Greenville. He was recently appointed to the Foundation Board of the South Carolina Governor’s School and was incoming vice-president of The Cotillion Club of Greenville.

A life long Episcopalian, he was not only an active parishioner of Christ Church, but also was greatly involved in the development of Christ Church Episcopal School. He served terms on the vestry at Christ Church and also was a past chairman of the school board of CCES. At the time of his death, he was a member of the CCES School Board of Visitors.

Governor Riley appointed Mr. Pressly to serve on the Teacher Incentive Pay Advisory Committee and Governor Campbell appointed him to be a member of the Committee of Education Improvement. Mr. Pressly also served as a member of the board of Directors of the Alliance for Quality Education in South Carolina.

Mr. Pressly is survived by his daughter, Mary Earle Pressly, MD, and his son, James Boyce Pressly, III; his mother, Florence Gillem Pressly; his brother, Jennings Gillem Pressly, MD, and wife Anna Dunson Pressly; sisters Adele Pressly Snyder and Susan Pressly Lephart, PhD, and their spouses Howard Snyder, MD and Scott Lephart, PhD, as well as by nieces Anna Truitt Pressly Helms, Catherine Cummings Pressly, Elizabeth Jennings Pressly, and Florence Adele Snyder, and nephews, Jennings Hudnell Snyder, Robert Welles Snyder, and Boyce Pressly Snyder.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, August 17, 2004 at 1 P.M. at Christ Church Episcopal, Greenville. Private interment will follow.

Memorials may be made to Christ Church Episcopal or to Christ Church Episcopal School, Greenville, SC.
