Laly Jeannette Watts

1933-2003

Laly Jeannette Hartin Watts, 70, wife of William Gerald Watts, died Wednesday, July 23, 2003 at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Spartanburg, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Dempsey Hartin and the late Estelle Loyde Hartin.

Mrs. Watts was of the Baptist faith and was a retired seamstress with Pioneer Dress Company.

Surviving are her husband of Oswego, S.C.; two sons, Frederick C. Arrington of Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Ernest D. Arrington of Sumter; and four grandchildren, David Arrington, Kimberly Arrington, April Arrington, and Chrystal Arrington.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Friday in the Chapel of the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Michael Henderson officiating.

Burial will be in the Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery in Oswego, S.C.

Nephews will serve as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home and other times at the home of her sister-in-law, Mozelle London, 1059 Marion Lane.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 950 48th Avenue North, Suite 101, Myrtle Beach, S.C. 29577 or to Bethel United Methodist Church, 5575 Lodebar Road, Sumter, S.C. 29153.

Velma Blanton Goings Kerns

1913-2003

Velma Blanton Goings Kerns, 89, twice married, first to the late Otis L. Goings and then to the late Harley Kerns, died Monday, July 28, 2003 at a local nursing center.

Born in Stanly County, North Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Ernest Ervin Blanton and the late Nancy Ann Hathcock Blanton.

Mrs. Kerns was a member of Bethesda Church of God and was a former member of Tremont Church of God in Greenville, S.C. She was a former resident of Covenant Place and Solomon’s Home.

Surviving are five half-sisters, Margaret Thompson of Mint Hill, N.C., Bonnie Carter of Ft. Lawn, S.C., Deloris Watts, Nellie Montgomery, and Barbara Henry, all of Lancaster, S.C.; two nieces Nancy Gardner of Sumter and Diane Evans of York, S.C.; and numerous other nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Thursday at Evergreen Burial Park in Mint Hill, N.C. with the Rev. Albert H. Sims officiating.

The family will receive friends at the home of her niece, Nancy Gardner, 2295 W. Brewington Road.

Memorials may be made to Bethesda Church of God Building Fund, 1402 Camden Hwy, Sumter, S.C. 29153.

Carrie Green Johnson

1909-2003

Carrie Green Johnson, 94, widow of J. T. Johnson, died Monday, July 28, 2003 at a local nursing center.

Born in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Cornelius Vanderbilt Green and Susan Emmaline Tomlinson Green.

Mrs. Johnson was a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church.

Surviving are a son, J. T. Johnson, Jr. and wife Frances of Sumter; two daughters, Mary J. Hobbs of Lynchburg and Emily J. Thomas and husband Parkin of Sumter; a brother, Barron H. Green of Lynchburg; eight grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; and a very dear friend, Mary Lou Riles of Sumter.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 P.M. Thursday at Shiloh United Methodist Church with the Rev. Preston Grimsley officiating.

Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be grandsons, Curtis Hobbs, Mark Hobbs, Frank Thomas, John Lee Thomas, John Johnson, and Roy Johnson.

Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Philip H. Brandt and Joe F. Dean, Jr.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 9:00 P.M. Wednesday at the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home, and other times at the home.

Memorials may be made to Shiloh United Methodist Church, 6005 Mt. Sinai Church Road, Lynchburg, S.C. 29080, or to a charity of one’s choice.

Iva Nell Welch Bradham

1941-2003

Iva Nell Welch Bradham, 62, wife of John D. Bradham, Jr., died Tuesday, July 29, 2003 at her home.

Born in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late John Howard Welch and the late Eva Nesbitt Welch.

Mrs. Bradham was a member of First Pentecostal Holiness Church and was retired from Becton-Dickinson.

Surviving are two sons, Luke Miles and Greg Bradham both of Sumter; a daughter, Joye LaNell Miles of Sumter; a brother, John Robert Welch of Santee; two sisters, Joan Hedrick and Ruby Watts both of Sumter; and 6 grandchildren, Hailey Miles, Mason Miles, Madelyn Miles, Ethan Bradham, Hannah Bradham and Jessie Bradham.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, James Howard Welch and Charles Elbert Welch; and two sisters, Lillie Mae Felder and Orie Elizabeth Welch.

Funeral services will be held at 2 P.M. Friday in the Chapel of the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with Rev. Larry Christopher and Rev. Reese Miles officiating.

Burial will be in Wells Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Lynn Felder, Steve Felder, Marion Huggins, Johnny Turner, Dennie Somheil, and Todd Welch.

The family will receive friends form 6 to 8 P.M. Thursday at the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home, 801 Holiday Drive.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Pentecostal Holiness Church, 2609 McCrays Mill Road, Sumter, S. C. 29154 or to a charity of one’s choice.

Eliza Atkinson Tolson

1922-2003

Eliza Atkinson Tolson, 80, widow of Frank Tolson, died Tuesday, July 29, 2003.

Born in Lee County, she was the daughter of the late Purdy Atkinson and the late Lula Logan Atkinson.

Mrs. Tolson was a member of Faith Baptist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star.

Surviving are a daughter, Shelby Mitchum Vaughan of Sumter; four sisters, Evelyn Stokes and husband Stanley of Bishopville, Ila A. Herrington, Ruth Weatherford and husband Marion, and Thelma Elmore all of Sumter; two brothers, James P. Atkinson and wife Kathryn and Hubert Atkinson and wife Lorena, all of Sumter; three grandchildren, Jerry McLeod of Sumter, Ellen Cassity and husband Eric, and Allen McLeod and wife Jessica all of Columbia; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Ola Wilson.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday in the Chapel of the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Vic VanRas officiating.

Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Friday at the funeral home and other times at the home, 2199 Beckwood Road.

Caro Leigh Jackson McElveen, 94, died Friday, August 1, 2003 at Covenant Place.

Born in Davis Station, S. C., she was a daughter of the late Elwin Morgan Watt and the late Gertrude Ridgill Watt.

Mrs. McElveen was twice married, first to the late Beecher Bryant Jackson and later to the late Edward McElveen.

Surviving are a son, Kirby B. Jackson of Anniston, Alabama; a daughter, Rose Ellen Davies of Austin, Texas ; three brothers, John Allen Watt, Thomas D. Watt and E. M. Watt all of Sumter; six sisters, Vera Stokes Bradham, Edna Touchberry, Gertrude Benbow, Marguerite Huggins, Roberta Singleton and Tona Chandler all of Sumter; a step-sister, Iris Mills of Mayesville; three step-brothers, William Singleton of Sumter, Frank Singleton of Chapin, and Bobby Singleton of Kentucky; 4 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Clyde Watt Hook and Wylma Watt Ridgeway.

Graveside services will be held at 11 A.M. Monday at the Sumter Cemetery with Rev. Jack Whitehead officiating.

The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 A.M. Monday at the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Bible Fellowship Church, 227 Broad Street, Sumter, S. C. 29150.
