Clyde Williams

CAMDEN — Funeral services for Clyde Irwin Williams, 90, of Camden will be held Friday, August 27, 2004 at 3:00 PM in Bethesda Presbyterian Church with burial to follow in Quaker Cemetery. Family will receive friends following the committal in the John Knox Hall. Memorials may be made to Bethesda Presbyterian Church, 502 Dekalb St., Camden, SC 29020 or UNC Endowment, P.O. Box 309, Chapel Hill, NC 27514.

Mr. Williams died Tuesday, August 24, 2004. Born in Alamance County, NC. on June 30, 1914, he was the son of the late Arthur Page and Eula Nicholson Williams. He retired from DuPont after 40 years of service. He was a graduate of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC. a member of Chancellors Club and Rams Club. Mr. Williams served with US Army Signal Corps as Staff Sergeant in the Radar Unit attached to the Air Force in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. He was a resident of Camden since 1950, was President of Springdale Land Co. which developed Kirkover Hills. Mr. Williams was a member of Bethesda Presbyterian Church where he served as deacon, elder, member of Building Committee and other committees. His community service includes Camden Christian Ministries, Triad Group, Ambassador of the Chamber of Commerce, Camden High School Bulldog Club and American Legion Post 17.

Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Betty Lou McMahan Williams, a son, Clyde I. Williams, Jr. of Camden, a daughter, Sarah W. Jowers and her husband Victor of Camden, grandsons: Eddie Deese and his wife, Lori of Lugoff, Andrew Deese and his wife, Mary Kay, of Spartanburg; granddaughter; Robyn Wilcox and her husband, Henry of Greenville, great-grandchildren: Matheson and Davis Deese of Lugoff, Hannah Deese of Spartanburg, Jack and Lance Wilcox of Greenville, sister, Evelyn W. Foster of Thomasville, NC., brother-in-law, E.O. McMahan of St. George, SC., a number of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister Adele Leonard.

Louie Hufstetler

WEST COLUMBIA — Memorial services for Louie A. Hufstetler, 81, will be held at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, August 25, 2004 at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel. Officiating will be Pastor David Day. A special mass will be held at Corpus Christi Catholic Church at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 26, 2004 In lieu of flowers, the family requests that honorariums be donated to the Alzheimer’s Association, Trinity United Methodist Church Building Fund, 1132 Gunters Circle, West Columbia, SC 29169 or Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 2350 Augusta Hwy, Lexington, SC 29072 in his honor.

Mr. Hufstetler died Monday, August 23, 2004. Born in Sumner, GA he was the son of the late Robert Scott Hufstetler and Laura McCook Hufstetler. He was a graduate of Sumner High School and attended Federal Aviation Administration Academy, (FAA). He was veteran of the Unites States Army. Mr. Hufstetler was employed by the the Department of Transportation Federal Aviation Administration where he worked in Meridian, MS, San Juan, Puerto Rico and Columbia, SC and then retired January 7, 1983. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and attended Corpus Christi Catholic Church

He is survived by his wife, Sylvia O. Hufstetler; son and daughter-in-law, Leslie L. and Lisset Gonzales Hufstetler and their children, Alejandro Gabriel and Margo Isabel Hufstetler of Guaynabo, Puerto Rico; son and daughter-in-law, Edward M. and Tonya Morgan Johnston, their children, Jessica L, Monica L, and S. Anjelica Johnston of West Columbia; brothers and sisters-in-law, Wilson and Doris Berry Hufstetler of Dade City, FL, Sylvan and Reba Maddox Hufstetler of Tyty, GA; sister-in-law, Ilone Aultman Hufstetler and a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. Hufstetler is predeceased by brothers, Henry, Victor Hufstetler and sister, Edwina Hamberg.

Helen Jollie

IRMO — Services for Helen Dansby Jollie are 1 p.m. Thursday at Greater Hopewell AME Church, where she was a member; burial in church cemetery. Bostick-Tompkins Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Richland Co. to Smith and Florence Dansby, she died Aug. 22, 2004. Surviving: sister, Ethel Trapp; nieces and nephew, Pearleen, Cathy, Viola, Murtis, Bertha, Martha, Dorothy, Ida, Siretha, Sandra and Odell.

Rae Hulst

WEST COLUMBIA — Funeral service for Rae Nubert Hulst, 85, of West Columbia, will be held 2 o’clock, Thursday, August 26, 2004 at New Heights Baptist Church. Officiating will be Reverend Harry Bauknight. Interment will follow in Crescent Hill Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 o’clock this (Wednesday) evening at Shives Funeral Home.

Mrs. Hulst died Monday, August 23, 2004. Born in Kershaw County, she was a daughter of Joseph Earl Thornton and Susie Watson. She was a long time member of Colonial Heights Baptist Church and later a member of New Heights Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for many years. Mrs. Hulst retired from Tapp’s Department Store after 25 years of service where she worked in the Men’s Department.

Survivors include her sons, Timothy E. Hulst and wife, Anna of West Columbia, her son David H. Hulst of Key West FL; two grandchildren, Matthew Hulst and Kaitlyn Hulst. Also surviving are sisters, Mary Mangum of Blythewood and Doris Paul of Gilbert, SC. Mrs. Hulst was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Warden Hulst and her brothers, Hubert Thornton, Wallace Thornton, Donald Thornton and a sister, Sally Satcher.

Joseph Williams

AIKEN — Graveside service for Joseph Daniel Williams, 82, of Aiken, will be held 1 o’clock, Thursday, August 26, 2004 Greenlawn Memorial Park. Officiating will be Mr. Bobby Giles. The family will receive friends following the graveside service. Shives Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Williams died Monday, August 23, 2004. Born in Columbia, SC, he was a son of Kirby Daniel Williams and Minnie Linda Johnson. He was a dedicated member of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Columbia Second Ward. He worked for the City of Columbia as a building supervisor. Mr. Williams proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was also a member of the Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 13.

Survivors include a son, Joseph “Danny” Williams, Jr. and wife, Kathy of Aiken, a daughter, Brenda Hite and husband, Jerry of West Columbia, nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Windsor Lake Ward, 2350 White Pine Road, Columbia, SC 29223.

Johnny Wilson

EASTOVER — Services for Mr. Johnny Lee “Teeny Man” Wilson, 39, will be held 1 p.m. Thursday (viewing at 12 noon) at True Gospel Church in Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ with burial in the church cemetery. Leevy’s Funeral Home, Lower Richland Chapel is in charge. Surviving are his mother, Ravenell Wilson Anderson; sister, Nicole Stokes; brothers, Clifford, Dexter, Reginald, and Conrad Anderson.

Olivia Shanabarger

RIDGEWAY — Services for Mrs. Olivia Mary Cassemere Shanabarger, 60, are 1 p.m. Thursday at Leevy's Funeral Home, Taylor Street Chapel. Surviving are her daughters, Angel Houston, Debretta Roberts, Haneefah McNair, Renetta Brown, and Bernadette Morrison; sons, Reginald Roberts, Dawud Tarleyb, and Joshua Shanabarger; mother, Etta Cassemere; sisters, Vera Cassemere and Sahar Abdullah-Wasi.

Chryl Pehowic

LEXINGTON — Chryl Darlene Pehowic, 56, of Lexington, died Saturday, August 21, 2004.

Memorial services will be held at 11 am, Wednesday, August 25, 2004, at Trinity Baptist Tabernacle in Sandy Run with Rev. Dale Mechling officiating.

Mrs. Pehowic was born in Kershaw County, a daughter of the late Samuel Dewey and Mary Bleeka Knight Livingston.

Survivors include two sons: Bryan Allen Pehowic of Columbus, OH; Wardlaw Livingston Fulmer of Swansea; three sisters: Brenda Jordan of St. Clair, MO; Mildred Wallace of Columbia; Doris Baker of Surfside Beach, SC; a brother: Samuel Dewey Livingston, Jr. of Lexington; a grandson: Wolfe Allen Pehowic; special friends: Roger and Cindy Mechling and family; and a number of nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Wednesday at the church after the memorial service.

Culler-McAlhany Funeral Home in North is in charge.

Lessie Mae Sharpe

GASTON — Services for Lessie Mae Sharpe, 86, of Gaston, will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, August 26, 2004 in Harmony Baptist Church, officiated by Rev. Gary Farmer and Rev. Raymond Owens. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Thompson Funeral Home of West Columbia. Memorials may be made to Harmony Baptist Church or Easter Seals.

Mrs. Sharpe, widow of Ralph S. Sharpe, died August 23, 2004. Born in Lexington, she was a daughter of the late John and Frances Sharpe Spires. Mrs. Sharpe was a homemaker, and devoted mother and grandmother. She was an excellent historian of the Sharpe’s Hill community and a dedicated member of Harmony Baptist Church. Mrs. Sharpe had placed her faith in Jesus as a young girl and was a loving Christian example to her family and all who knew her. She thoroughly enjoyed studying God’s word and teaching Sunday School as long as she was able. Church was a way of life for her, and being able to give of herself to others brought her great joy. Now Mrs. Sharpe is experiencing all the joys and splendor of heaven. Our loss is heaven’s gain. She will be missed greatly, until we meet her there.

Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Dale and Richard Starnes of Gaston; sons and daughters-in-law, Ralph “Jack” and Ellen Sharpe of Prosperity, Donald R. and Judy Sharpe of Gaston; sister, Ruth Fallaw of West Columbia; brother and sister-in-law, Rhoden and Jesse Mae Spires of Gaston; grandchildren, Kenny Sharpe, Belinda Corley, Dondra Sharpe-Craft, Tony Wise, Marci Starnes; and great-grandchildren, John Corley, Tommy Corley, Garrett Sharpe, Grant Sharpe and Whitney Craft.

Violet Setzer

LEXINGTON — Graveside services for Violet “Louise” Setzer, 72, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 26, 2004 at Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm on Wednesday, August 25, 2004 at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel.

Mrs. Setzer, widow of Carl J. Setzer, died Monday, August 23, 2004. Born in High Point, NC she was the daughter of the late Adam and Sadie Earhart Wall. She was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church.

She is survived by her grandson, Richey Setzer of Lexington; granddaughter, Stephanie Bryant of Greenville and a number of nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three brothers and three sisters.

Loring Baker

SUMTER — Loring K. Baker, of Sumter, died peacefully in his sleep, August 16 in Alpharetta, Georgia at the age of 77. He was a world leader in Olympic Boxing. He was the first president of USA Boxing, producing the 1984 Los Angles Olympic boxing team that won 9 golds, widely considered the best Olympic boxing team in history. He was also boxings’ International Secretary General, making him the 2nd highest ranking person in the world for Olympic Boxing. A member of 4 Boxing Halls of Fame, he served on the Georgia Boxing Commission, and held board seats for numerous organizations and scholarship funds. Married to the late Beulah McCoy Baker of Sumter, he is survived by son William L. Baker of Sumter, daughter Patricia Baker Maloney of Philadelphia and two grandchildren.

A Memorial Service will be held at 1205 Mayfield Road, Alpharetta, GA. 30004 (Atlanta) on September 11 at 2:00 pm. The Loring Keels Baker Memorial Fund has been established to help underprivileged athletes. Contributions can be mailed to the same address.

Charles Letorneau

CONWAY — Charles H. Letorneau, 73, of Conway, SC, died Friday, August 27, 2004 in Charleston, SC. He was born July 3, 1931 in Cranston, RI, a son of the late Charles J. and Cecile Hebert Letorneau. He was preceded in death by a brother, Conrad. Charles was an Electrical Engineer with Pratt & Whitney Aircraft from 1962-1987. He is a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in the Korean Conflict where he was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Stars and United Nations Service Medal. He was a member of the loyal Order of Moose, B.P.O.E., V.F.W., and American Legion. He is survived by his loving wife, Palmyre; a son, Charles Letorneau of Lexington, SC; a daughter, Janet Levett of West Haven, CT; a brother, Donald Letorneau of Murrells Inlet, SC; 8 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchild-ren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and dear friends. Services will be at the convenience of the family. The Letorneau family is being served by the Palmetto Cremation Society, Charleston, SC.

Bernice Reeves

St. GEORGE — Bernice Harbeson Reeves, 80 of 5539 Memorial Blvd. St. George died Friday in Trident Medical Center, North Charleston.

Funeral Services will be held 11 a.m. Monday in the St. George United Methodist Church with Dr. Wash Belangia officiating. Burial will follow in the Murray Cemetery, Grover, SC. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Bryant Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Donnie Byrd, Eddie Willis, Randy Harbeson, Kyle Clements, Rick Hegwood, and Ned Willis.

Mrs. Reeves was born March 22, 1924 near Grover a daughter of the late Leon Murray Harbeson and Angie Weeks Harbeson. She was a graduate of Art's Beauty College in Charleston and was the Owner of Bernice's Beauty Shop. She was a member of St. George United Methodist Church and the Mary Bailey Circle. The widow of George Edwin (Ed) Reeves she was pre-deceased by brothers; Virdie Harbeson, Earnest Harbeson, Albert Harbeson, Loyless Harbeson and a sister Laura H. Byrd.

Surviving: sons; Sammie L. (Martha) Reeves and Hughey E. (Sheryl) Reeves, a brother, Furman (Ruth) Harbeson, all of St. George, a sister, Laverne (Johnny) Reeves, Charleston. Grandchildren; Christi and Randy Patrick and their children, Caleb and Seth Patrick; Angie and Donald Thames and their children, Kristopher Matthews, Alexis and Brooks Thames; Susan and Travis Almers; Brian George Reeves; Shelley Anne Reeves; Kaitlin Marie Reeves, and Ali Kristina Reeves all of St. George.

Memorials may be made to St. George United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 506, St. George, SC 29477.

Mattie Merritt

BATESBURG — Hattie Bell Merritt, 85, widow of James “Sugar Boy” Merritt, of 893 Old 96 Indian Trail, died Wednesday, August 25, 2004 at Lexington Medical Center.

Services for Mrs. Merritt will be held at 3:00 P.M. Monday (Viewing 2:00 P.M.) at Caledonia Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery. Born in Lexington County, she was a daughter of the late Sam and Hattie Porter Quattlebaum. She was a member of Caledonia Baptist Church.

Survivors include five sons James, Jackie, Jean Ray, Jerry and Jerome Merritt; three daughters Ethel M. Simpkins, Juanita Jordan and Esqueen Smith; four grandchildren she raised in the home, Jimmie L., JoAnn, Jerri and Jerry. Two sisters Martha Matthews and Naomi Friday; 53 grandchildren; 101 great-grandchildren and 18 great-great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Visitation is Sunday from 2:30-8:30 P.M. at J.H. Robinson Funeral Home, Wagener, SC.

Hazel Traynham

GREENWOOD — Services for Hazel Dickerson Traynham, 94. widow of Walter Traynham, are 3 p.m. (visitation 2-3 p.m.) Monday at Blyth Funeral Home; burial in Greenwood Memorial Gardens. Born in Surry Co., N.C. to S. Everett and Chana Dickerson, she died Aug. 27, 2004. Surviving are grandchildren, William, Kenneth Traynham, Terri Mayfield, Tracy Hughes, Marie Dixon; sister, Elsie Traynham; 11 great-grandchildren.
