Mary Anderson

COLUMBIA — Memorial service and inurnment for Mary “Ginny” Anderson, 60, of Columbia, will be held 12 o’clock, Wednesday, October 20, 2004 in Greenlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel.

Mrs. Anderson died Thursday, October 14, 2004. Born in Greenwood, SC, she was a daughter of the late James F. and Mary Ellen Hafner Hatchell. She was a social worker for the Dept. of Social Services in Lexington and Richland Counties for 27 years.

Survivors are her daughter, Catherine L. Meetze of Columbia; son, William R. Anderson of California; sister, Jane Rumsey of Woodstock, GA; brother, James F. Hatchell, Jr. of Raleigh, NC; two grandchildren

Charles Berry Sr.

COLUMBIA — Funeral Service for Charles Elias Berry, Sr. of Columbia, will be held 3:00 p.m. Wednesday at Bostick-Tompkins Funeral Home, with burial to follow.

Bostick-Tompkins Funeral Home, 2930 Colonial Drive is in charge.

Mr. Berry died on October 13. Born in Columbia, he was the son of Hansford and Candis Flowers Berry.

Surviving are his children, Idell Gavin, Carlas Jones; Charles Jr., Timothy, Candis and Sonja Berry; sister, Elizabeth Summerville, a host of grandchildren.

Lee Arnold

COLUMBIA — Funeral Services for MSgt. Lee Arnold of Columbia will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday, October 20, 2004, with full military rites and entombment to follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park and Mausoleum. The family will receive friends at 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday evening at the funeral home. Memorial may be made to Vietnam Veterans of America. Condolences may be sent to www.mem.com. Greenlawn Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Arnold died Monday, October 18, 2004. Born in Corienth, Miss., he was the son of the late Chester Frank Arnold and Margie Pauline Timmons. He was a member of Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints, Windsor Lake Ward and has been a resident of Columbia since 1967. Mr. Arnold retired from the U.S. Army after 32 years of dedicated service as Master Sergeant and in which he served in WWII, Korean Conflict and Vietnam War.

Surviving are his loving and devoted wife of 55 years, Betty L. Chamness Arnold of the home; daughters, Sandra Galloway and her husband Steve of West Columbia, SC and Connie Moody and her husband Jim of Lexington, SC; sons John Arnold of Neeses, SC, Allen Arnold of Columbia, SC and Michael Arnold of West Columbia, SC; a daughter in law, Suzanne Arnold of Hopkins, SC; sisters, Julie Burr, Shirley McCook and Diane Quintero all of Oklahoma City, OK; one brother, Billy Mack Arnold of Tyler, Texas ; 8 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.

Marjorie Brigman

BENNETTSVILLE — Services for Marjorie Faye Walters Brigman, 82, widow of Burdine Brigman, are 3 p.m. today at Second Baptist Church; burial: Sunset Memorial Park. Whitner-Evans Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Marlboro Co. to Nathan and Bessie Hendrix Walters, she died Oct. 17, 2004. Surviving: granddaughter, Mica Thomas; great granddaughter, April Roller, nieces, nephews.

Morgan Cox

RIDGE SPRING — Morgan Cox, 15, of Simpsonville, died Sunday, October 17, 2004. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, October 21, 2004, at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church with interment in church cemetery with Rev. Charles Yoho officiating.

Mr. Cox was born in West Columbia the son of Mitcel and Christle Fulmer Watson. He was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church. He was a student at Mauldin High School and was a member of the J.V. football team and F.C.A.

Surviving are his father of Simpsonville and mother of Monetta; sisters, Chistale Nicole Cox; Kelsey Faith Cox; both of Monetta; step-sisters, Amanda and Ashley Watson both of Aiken; step-father, Terry Watson of Monetta; grandparents, I.C. and Linda Fulmer of Ridge Spring; Ross and Connie Cox of Bryan, OH; Lottie Cumbee of Ridge Spring; Eilene Cox of Payne, OH.

Family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, October 20, 2004, at Milton Shealy Funeral Home, other times at the home of his mother and step-father, in Monetta.

Lewis DeLoach

ESTILL — Mr. Lewis Edward DeLoach, 57, of 535 Lewis Road, Estill, SC, and the husband of Diane Mixson DeLoach, died Sunday at the Beaufort Memorial Hospital after an extended illness.

Born March 27, 1947 in Hampton County, he was the son of Tillie DeLoach Herndon and the late Leonard Herndon. He was a member of Steep Bottom Baptist Church.

Surviving besides his wife and mother are two sons: Lewis E. DeLoach, Jr. and Charles Lee DeLoach of Estill; one brother Tommy Herndon of Ridgeland; one sister Beverly Simmons of Beaufort; one grandson; two aunts Emma Jean Brunson and Dorothy DeLoach of Estill.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2:00 PM in the Chapel of Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home in Hampton. Burial will follow in the DeLoach Cemetery, Hampton, SC.

Friends may call at the chapel in Hampton Tuesday evening from 6 until 8 PM and until the hour of services on Wednesday.

Claude Ellis

KERSHAW — Services with burial for Claude Byars Ellis, 78, U.S. Army veteran and a retired teacher, will be 11 a.m. Wednesday (visitation 10 a.m. prior) at Bethune Baptist Church. Baker Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Gaffney to Walton and Connie Byars Ellis, he died October 17, 2004. Mr. Ellis was a Mason and enjoyed playing bridge. Surviving: brothers, Robert and Harold Ellis; nieces and nephews.

Sara Hardiman

GREENWOOD — Graveside services for Sara Virginia “Nanny” Knawhaw Hardiman, 97, widow of G.Q. Knawhaw and John Hardiman, 2 p.m. Wednesday in Greenwood Memorial Gardens; visitation 7-9 tonight at Blyth Funeral Home. Born in Clear Creek, Ala., to Henry Wood and Rhoda Millican McCrickard, she died Oct. 18, 2004. Surviving: son, Sidney Knawhaw; grandchild, great, great-great-grandchildren.

Wayne Worthy

COLUMBIA — Services for Wayne Worthy will be held 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Leevy’s Funeral Home, Taylor Street Chapel with burial in Lincoln Cemetery. Wake services will be held 6:00 p.m. this evening.

Born June 7, 1948 in Columbia, South Carolina, he was the son of the late Allen Worthy, Sr. and Janie Bell Rush, and grandson of the late Hughy and Carrie Worthy.

Surviving are his daughter, Betty (Isaiah) Gray, son, Rodney Miller; sisters, Maria (Roderick) Gaines, Dana Worthy and Sharon Worthy; brothers, Allen (Shirley) Worthy, Jr., Herbert Worthy of Freeport, New York, Lorenzo (Showan) Worthy, Torrence (Deszere) Worthy, of Kansas City, Kansas; nieces, Alicia, Michelle, Christina, Brittany and April; nephews, Allen Worthy, III, Lorenzo Worthy, Jr. and Roderick Gaines; 8 aunts; 3 uncles; a special caring aunt, Ethel Worthy; and a host of cousins, relatives and friends.

Edna Williams

WALTERBORO — Services for Edna R. Williams, 90, widow of W.A. Harbiston Jr. and Ervin Williams, 11 a.m. Wednesday in Ackerman Cemetery, Cottageville. Visitation is 6-8 tonight at Brice W. Herndon & Sons Funeral Home. Born in Cottageville to Will and Margaret Youmans Rushton, she died Oct. 17, 2004. She loved flowers, cooking and her family. Surviving are daughters, Emily Ackerman, Evelyn Phillips; more.

Elmarene Thing

BEAUFORT — Elmarene Fuller Thing, 89, widow of Wilbur Wentworth Thing, died Saturday, October 16, 2004, in Florence, South Carolina.

The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6 until 8 PM at Copeland Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 2:00 PM at the E. C. Copeland Memorial Chapel with interment at The Baptist Church of Beaufort Churchyard.

Mrs. Thing was born September 8, 1915, in Zebulon, North Carolina, a daughter of Lewis William Fuller and Lula Maude Bunn Fuller.

She received her registered nurse degree from the Oglethorpe Private Infirmary, Macon, Georgia, and was a registered nurse for over 25 years at the Biltmore Orthopedic Hospital, Asheville, North Carolina, and the Asheville Orthopedic Hospital.

She was a member of The Baptist Church of Beaufort where she belonged to the Faith Sunday School Class, the Oasis Senior Group and the Golden Voices Choir.

She was predeceased by her husband and three sisters, Ruby Bennett, Hazel Perritt and Sally Chamblee.

Surviving are two daughters, Patricia Thing Bearden and her husband, Edward Bearden of Columbia, South Carolina, and Jean Thing York and her husband, Michael York of Florence, South Carolina; and four grandchildren, Laura Anne Bearden, Kristen Bearden Nagorniak and her husband, David Nagorniak, all of Columbia, South Carolina, and Jean Michele York, and John Michael York and his fiancee, Beth B. Harris, all of Florence, South Carolina.

Copeland Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Charles Sims Sr.

SPARTANBURG — Charles Lee Sims, Sr., age 66, of 107 Allen Court, Boiling Springs, died Sunday, Oct. 17th in Spartanburg Regional Healthcare.

He was born in Whitmire and was a son of Lougenia Sims McCarley of Columbia and the late Lee Blackburn Sims and step-father, Alec McCarley.

He was retired from Lucent Technologies; a former member of the Jaycees of Whitmire; was of the Methodist faith and a U.S. Army veteran.

Surviving are his wife, Shelby Watkins Sims of the home, two sons, Charles Lee Sims, Jr. of Whitmire and Edgar Allen Sims of Suffolk, VA; one daughter, Sandra Sims Crayne of Simpsonville, three sisters, Joyce Hunnicutt and Betty Bragg both of Whitmire and Linda Hurt of Columbia, six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and companion and best friend, “Josie.”

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, Oct. 20th at 3:00 p.m. in the Gray Funeral Home Chapel of Whitmire with burial in the Whitmire Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at Gray Funeral Home Whitmire.

The family is at 107 Allen Court, Boiling Springs, SC.

Louise Simmons

CHERAW — Services for Louise Moore Simmons, 91, will be held at noon Wednesday at Pleasant Grove AME Zion Church with burial in the church cemetery. Wake will be held from 7-8 tonight at Morris Funeral Cottage Chapel. She died October 15, 2004. Surviving are a nephew, nieces and other relatives.

Curtis Sharpe

WEST COLUMBIA — Services for Curtis Sharpe, 83, of West Columbia, will be held at 2pm Wednesday in Green Hill Baptist Church, officiated by Rev. Mark Hathcox. Burial and military rites will follow at Southland Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends and family from 6-8pm Tuesday at Thompson Funeral Home of West Columbia.

Mr. Sharpe, widower of Clara Sharpe, died Sunday, October 17, 2004. Born in Red Bank, he was the son of the late Talmadge and Alma Sharpe. Mr. Sharpe was a United States Army veteran of World War II. He served in the 84th Division and was a recipient of the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. In 2002, he was awarded the French Jubilee Medal for his participation in the Invasion of Normandy. Mr. Sharpe attended Green Hill Baptist Church and was retired from Ft. Jackson Barber Shop.

Surviving are his sons and daughters-in-law, John and Pat Sharpe of Cayce, Ronald and Sharon Sharpe of West Columbia; sister-in-law, Patricia Turner of Columbia; grandchildren, John Sharpe, Jr., Ronald Sharpe, Jr., and Christine Sharpe.

Lynda Rister-Clay

COLUMBIA — Services for Lynda Rister-Clay, 62, of Columbia, will be held at 5pm Wednesday in Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, officiated by Rev. Junior Roland. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8pm Tuesday at Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or to Palmetto Health Hospice.

Ms. Rister-Clay died Monday, October 18, 2004. Born in Bennetsville, NC, she was the daughter of the late Junius N. and Lucille J. Sewell Northcutt. She was a member of Glory Baptist Church and was retired from the Department of the Army.

Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Clyde Thomas Rister, Jr. and Mandy Rister; granddaughter, Jennifer Bright; and a number of aunts and uncles. Ms. Rister-Clay was predeceased by her son, Chad Nelson Rister.
