COLUMBIA — Service for William A. “Sonny” Phillips, 53, will be held Thursday at 3 p.m. at Columbia Original Freewill Baptist Church with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be Wednesday 6-8 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel.

Mr. Phillips died Sunday, October 17, 2004. Born in Lancaster, he was a son of the late Charles Woodrow and Pearl Cullens Carter Phillips. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps.

Surviving are his wife, Mattie Jean Stewart Phillips; daughters, Penny Diane Phillips of Centerville, Ga. and Teresa Trantham of Redding, Calif.; grandson, Brett Allen Phillips, who was raised in the home; brother, Mark Phillips of Swansea; sisters, Becky Watkins of South Carolina, Gayle Unsworth of Pelion and Gwen Curvin of Columbia; grandchildren, Bruce, Brandon, Audie and A.J.; nephews and nieces, Chad, Matthew, Allen, Stephanie, Ann, Wayne, Michael and Joe.

Ferry Parker

DARLINGTON — Services for Ferry Junior “Preacher” Parker, 72, retired from PDRTA, 4 p.m. Wednesday (visitation 7-9 tonight) at Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home; burial: Parker Family Cemetery. Born in Williamsburg Co. to Isaac and Jenny Feagin Parker, he died Oct. 16, 2004. Surviving: children, Mark, Danny Parker, Cyndy Gaines; siblings, Johnny, Allard Parker, Francis McDonald; grandchildren; great-grandchildren.

James Millhouse

COLUMBIA — Services for James Samuel Millhouse 1 p.m. Wednesday at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church; burial in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Bostick-Tompkins Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Orangeburg to Ernest Jr. and Anna Hart Millhouse, he died October 16, 2004. Surviving: wife, Doris D. Millhouse; children, Samuel, Elijah, Glenda, Mary, Kathy, Tracy and Justine; 3 brothers; 2 sisters.

Maude McKenzie

ANDREWS — Maude Moore McKenzie, 86, died Sunday, October 17, 2004, at Georgetown Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. McKenzie was born in the Earle’s community of Williamsburg Co. near Andrews on May 4, 1918, a daughter of the late Charlie Zinnerman Moore and Annie Powell Moore. She was a graduate of Andrews High School and a former employee of Oneita Industries. Mrs. McKenzie was a member of The Christian Fortress and had served her church as a Sunday School teacher and church pianist.

Surviving are her husband, David W. McKenzie of Andrews; two sons, Elbert L. McKenzie and his wife Patricia and Winston L. McKenzie and his wife, Eunice, both of Andrews; a sister, Mildred M. Duncan of Andrews; five grandchildren; Jeffery McKenzie and Tina M. Bratcher, both of Andrews, Karen M. Toney of Florence; and Cindy M. Chavis and Scott McKenzie, both of Georgetown; and six great-grandchildren.

Mrs. McKenzie was predeceased by a son, D. Z. McKenzie.

Funeral services will be four o’clock Tuesday afternoon, October 19, 2004, at The Christian Fortress. Officiating will be the Rev. Geraldine Bednego and the Rev. Daniel M. Cooper. Entombment will follow in Pennyroyal Memorial Gardens Mausoleum in Georgetown.

The Andrews Chapel of Mayer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

John Ellinger

COLUMBIA — Funeral service for John Ellinger, 72, will be held at 4:00 p.m. Saturday at Columbia Original Freewill Baptist Church with burial to follow in Crescent Hill Memorial Gardens. Rev. Carroll Alexander will officiate the service. Pallbearers will be Johnny Spotts, Don Spotts, Bobby McNeil, Sexton Buff, Joey Logan, Joey Sharpe, J. Warren Buress, and Larry Griner. The family will receive friends Friday 6-8 p.m at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, 520 Gervais Street, Suite 300, Columbia, SC 29204.

Mr. Ellinger died Wednesday, October 20, 2004. Born in Blythewood, he was the son of the late Cromer A. and Mary B. Rimer Ellinger. He worked for Stanick Roofing and Sheet Metal. Mr. Ellinger was an avid Clemson fan and a member of Columbia Freewill Baptist Church. A devoted and loving husband and father, he will be greatly missed.

Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Beverly Ann Ellinger; daughters, Linda E. Manor of Forest Acres, and Bonnie Rabon and her husband Ricky of Columbia; son, John C. Ellinger, Jr. and his wife Windy of Columbia; daughter, Pam Rodgers of Columbia; sister, Mary E. Griner of Columbia; and 8 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a granddaughter, Danelle Marie Richardson.

Florence Cusick

PAWLEY’S ISLAND — Florence Mottram Cusick, 79, died Wednesday, October 20, 2004.

Memorial services will be one o’clock Saturday afternoon, October 23, 2004 at Old All Saints Church, Waccamaw at Pawley’s Island.

The family will receive friends Friday evening, October 22, 2004, from six until eight at the residence, 709 Crooked Oak Drive, Pawley’s Island.

Memorials may be made to National Emphysema Foundation, 15 Belden Ave., Norwalk, CT 06850 or All Saints Parish Waccamaw, P.O. Box 4750, Pawley’s Island, SC 29585.

Eldred Goff

COLUMBIA — Funeral service for Eldred Rudolph Goff, Sr., 75, will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Crescent Hill Baptist Church with burial to follow in Crescent Hill Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Friday at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Crescent Hill Baptist Church.

After a long and courageous battle with cancer, Mr. Goff died Thursday, October 21, 2004, with his family at the home of his daughter. Born in Blaney, he was the son of the late John Arthur Goff and Charlotte Ross Goff. He retired in 1983 from Southern Bell Telephone Company after 36 years of service. As a faithful member of Crescent Hill Baptist Church, he served on the board of deacons, was an R.A. leader, Sunday School teacher, and held various offices as a class member. Mr. Goff touched the lives of many he met during his journey through life as a wonderful brother, husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He was a 3rd degree Master Mason and 32nd degree Mason with Scottish Rite. All who knew and loved him will truly miss him.

Surviving are his beloved wife of 55 years, Jean Kelly Goff; daughter, Marcie Ann Speer and her husband John Michael Speer of Columbia; son, Eldred Rudolph Goff, Jr of Columbia; sister, Nancy Goff Durst of Aiken; and grandchildren, Kelly Conoly and Stephanie Speer, both of Columbia, Alexander Goff and William Goff, both of Charleston.

C.V. Talbert

HARTSVILLE — Funeral services for Cordy Verene “C.V.” Talbert, Jr., 74, will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, October 23, 2004 at Brown Pennington Atkins Funeral Home. The Rev. Jim Beck will officiate with burial in Darlington Memory Gardens, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Friday, October 22, 2004 from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Carolina’s Hospice, 121 East Cedar Street, Florence SC 29501.

Mr. Talbert died Thursday, October 21, 2004. Born in Chesterfield County, SC, he was a son of the late Cordy Verene and Estelle Easterling Talbert. He was a member of South Hartsville Baptist Church. He was retired from DuPont with 34 years of service and was owner and operator of Talbert Demolition and Renovation for over 40 years.

Surviving are his wife, Judith Byrd Talbert of Hartsville, SC; daughter and son-in-law, Elaine and Jim Stewart of Hartsville, SC; sons and daughters-in-law, Ricky and Brenda Talbert of Dillon, SC, Mitch Talbert of Hartsville, SC, Todd and Pam Talbert of Hartsville, SC; stepsons and spouses, Mark and Lisa Bedenbaugh of Hartsville, SC, Brian and Carol Bedenbaugh of Hartsville, SC, Scott and Natalie Bedenbaugh of Hartsville, SC; 18 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first spouse, Gloria Malphus Talbert.

Joseph Benson Sr.

COLUMBIA — Funeral service for Joseph “Joe” Benson, Sr. of Columbia, will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday at Antioch Baptist Church with entombment to follow in Greenlawn Mausoleum and Gardens.

Bostick-Tompkins Funeral Home, 2930 Colonial Drive is in charge.

Mr. Benson died on Oct. 19. He was the son of Sylvia G. Weston and the late James Benson and the step-son of the late Cyrus Weston, Sr. He was retired employee of The State News Paper Company, a veteran of the US Army, and a member of Antioch Baptist Church.

Mr. Benson was also preceded in death by a brother, Isaac Weston and a special aunt, Sara Goings.

Surviving are his loving wife, Willie Mae Benson; children, John (Maple) Kimble, Joseph Benson, Jr., Vivian (Kenneth) Corbin, Margie (James) McKenzie, Jacqueline Benson, Darlene (John) Jones; his loving mother; brothers, Willie Lee (Amber), John (Mary), Cyrus (Dorothy) and John (Mary) Weston; sister, Sally (Allen) Roberts; and a host of grandchildren and other loving relatives and friends, all of whom will miss him dearly.

Ted Carnes

LANCASTER — Services for Ted Johnny Carnes, 63, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Bethlehem Baptist Church, where he was a member; burial with Masonic Rites in the church cemetery. Visitation is 6-8 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home. Born in Lancaster to John and Lola McManus Carnes, he died Oct. 21, 2004. Surviving are sons, Sherrill, Ted Carnes; siblings, Billy, Ned Carnes, Hattie Duncan; 5 grandchildren.

Jackie Carter

ROCK HILL — A memorial service for Jackie Tipton Carter, 62, 11:30 a.m. at Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church, where she was a member; burial 10:45 a.m. in Forest Hills Cemetery; visitation 7-8:30 tonight at Greene Funeral Home, Northwest. Born in Rock Hill to Walter and June B. Tipton, she died Oct. 21, 2004. Surviving: husband, Herschel Carter; daughters, Cheryl Sanders, Virginia Burgess; 4 sisters; 5 grandchildren.

Corine Conyers

SUMMERTON — Services for Corine Robinson Conyers, 76, will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery. Summerton Funeral Services is in charge. She died Oct. 19, 2004. Surviving are siblings, Mable Russell, Shirley Robinson, Richard Robinson, Vernon Robinson; one aunt; two uncles.

Elizabeth Carson

ORANGEBURG — Elizabeth M. “Pete” Carson, 88 died Thursday, Oct. 21, 2004.

Funeral is 11 A.M. Saturday, Octoer 23, 2004 at St. Paul United Methodist Church with burial at West End Cemetery in St. Matthews directed by Thompson Funeral Home in Orangeburg. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to the Stain Glass Restoration Fund or the Building Fund of St. Paul United Methodist Church; 1808 Bridge St. East, St. Matthews, SC 29135 or to a charity of one’s choice.

Survivors: daughter and son-in-law, Sara and Norman Fairey of St. Matthews; granddaughter, Elizabeth Fairey of Takoma Park, MD; grandson, Gregory Fairey of Hattiesburg, Miss.; great-grandsons, Hampton and Walker Fairey.

Aurele Bourque

EDGEMOOR — A graveside service for Aurele “Lucky” Donald Joseph Bourque, 43, U.S. Army veteran, is 11 a.m. Saturday in Harmony Baptist Churchyard. Bass-Cauthen Funeral Home, Rock Hill, is in charge. Born in Augusta, Maine, to Marcel Bourque and Gabrielle Cutting, he died Oct. 13, 2004. Mr. Bourque worked at P. Kaufmann and was of the Catholic faith. He was predeceased by brother, Ludger Bourque.

Born in Millen, Ga., to Boise and Addie Chance, she died Oct. 19, 2004. Surviving: children, Suzette Burgess, Mary, Edward, Melvin, Crawford Dinkins, Carey White.

Born in Sumter to May and Willie Mae B. Coleman, he died Oct. 16, 2004. Surviving are sister-in-law, Ona Everall; nieces, Debbie Hodge, Laura Everall, Ellen Bierhoist; nephew, Howard Usher.
